This is an exciting week for Windows Phone 7.5 developers. Yesterday, we started rolling out the update to customer handsets and shared lots of developer goodness and started rolling out RTM updates to dev devices; today, I’m pleased to announce that the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 RTW release is now available on the Microsoft Download Center for immediate download and update.
The existing SDK has allowed developer to create and publish apps optimized for Windows Phone 7.5 since August. The Release to Web (RTW) release consists of seven additional release languages, final finishing touches to the tooling experience, a handful of bug fixes, and additional upgrade logic to provide a better installation process for users coming from earlier tools. In total, the RTW release is available in the following nine languages:
With this release, we recommend/ask that Windows Phone developers do the following three things…
The Windows Phone SDK 7.1 and the corresponding developer platform underlying Windows Phone 7.5 is the result of a ton of great feedback from developers over the past year. Of all these updates and changes, I would like to highlight my favorite five things that have resulted from your feedback:
This release represents the final step in a journey we started on in April at MIX11, with two betas (Beta 1, Beta 2, and the Refresh) and an RC release. Given that almost everything in the RTW tools has already been discussed here and on many other blogs, I’d like to take a few paragraphs to reflect a bit on the last six months since MIX11; what’s in the tools; and all the great input and feedback that has come from the Windows Phone developer community.
All of that being said, I would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to everyone that participated in the ‘Mango’ OS Pre-Release, and to everyone that have evaluated the pre-release tools. Thank you for helping to test the update process, yielding a better experience for our customers; and thank you for getting your apps built and tested in time for our Windows Phone 7.5 roll-out. It’s been great having you on board for the road to Windows Phone 7.5!
Most of all – thank you for being a Windows Phone developer, and collectively supporting our platform.
Thanks for the update. One note though: I notice that you say: "updating either your WPDT 7.0 RTW or WPSDK 7.1 pre-release installations", but the download page and the Release Notes both say that we must uninstall pre-release versions of 7.1 SDK before installing. Maybe I was reading into the word updating, but can we just install RTW over RC, or muct we uninstall as the docs say?
Thank you for all of the hard work that the windows phone team has put into making this an awesome release for the platform. I'm very excited to see where we can go with this.
@techSage I had to uninstall the RC first.
@techSage - sorry, that is a bit confusing. The WPSDK supports in-place upgrade from 7.0; updating from prior pre-releases does, unfortunately, require a uninstall/install to keep things tidy and well-oiled
hehehe I like the last part of Cliff's post - "to keep things tidy and well-oiled". Awesome stuff!! Oh by the way Just had a crunch out of that tasty Mango mmm yum yum
Thanks for the AWESOME deploy of Mango and the tools, Cliff! I think I speak for everybody that participated when I say: When do we get the Apollo dev bits? :-D
Great stuff! When i registerd as a developer with my Live ID, marketplace wasn't available in Sweden so i registered with my American credit card and address. Now it seems impossible to change country with my Live ID (And Zune Accout/Zune Pass). Am I forever doomed to be an American developer? :-)
The RTW requires a client Windows Vista or Windows 7 OS install. It will not install on Windows Server 2008 R2.
Smooth upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1, awesome :)
Hm. my win7 ult x86 at work uninstalled the RC dev tools and installed these w/o issue. However my home computer win7 ult x64 won't install these even after uninstalling all the RC dev tools (including x64 emulator). Anybody had this issue yet?
@bc3tech - does home machine have anything still hanging around (I've seen one or two components persist through an uninstall sometimes)? VB add-on or other items? What's the error message when you try to install?
@kyanha - Correct; only client OSs are supported by the installer.
@Bagoose - Unfortunately, that Live ID is locked as a US Live ID. You'll need to try to work with the Windows Live services team to see if they can do something on the backend, but my understanding is that it isn't changable. :(
@McKnyte - :-)
BTW - I made a small tweak/update to the post above, adding a contextual install link for the WebPI.
Is there any info on when the advertisement kit will expand to other countries, Denmark in particular?
I was really disappointed when I realised devs in Denmark could not use the ad kit :(
Thank for all .,
but how to download *.iso file of Windows Phone SDK 7.1....?
Is there any word on whether or not the SDK will work with the Windows Developer Preview (Win8)?
