In a companion post on the Windows Phone Blog, we have unveiled the highly anticipated Windows Phone 7 Series. For the first time ever, we are bringing together Xbox LIVE games and the Zune music and video experience to phones. Developers are already speculating about the app platform and tools. All I can tell you is that we are going big at MIX10, March 15-17.
I will proudly say that we are about to launch a very compelling mobile development platform – arguably the best in our history. Even if you can’t join us at MIX this year be sure to follow Charlie Kindel, @ckindel for regular updates on the developer story for Windows Phone.

Given that Microsoft has aggressively chased non-North American users and developers away from the Zune, is it going to turn around and make the Zune Marketplace open to the world at large where this phone is marketed?
Or is it going to be like the earlier experience with Microsoft mobile devices where the ROW gets a broken subset of the US experience?
There is no clear message on what the experience is going to be for international users.

I wish Microsoft would make a statement about backwards compatibility. I'm developing a very, very large app for WM 6/6.5 and I'm starting to freak out that all effort is about to be wasted. The complete lack of mentioning a simple line like, "oh and all your existing apps will work too" as got me thinking my work has all been for naught. And this after Microsoft has really really pushed Windows Phone development and Marketplace and so on...
I understand some things are priveleged, but can you offer any comments on the "freak-out" rumors I have heard below that affect developers?
1. Will there be any backwards compatibility with 6.5? I understand that some/many apps may not work without some changes any time any new OS comes out, but what can we expect? Is it like making changes like when we went from XP to Vista, or is this a complete paradigm shift with a completely new development model? Is it all managed code now? All native code? GDI? WPF?
2. Will there be multitasking? This is a question that shouldn't even have to be asked, but Apple has set the bar that multitasking is not necessary on mobile devices. I could not disagree more! However, I've seen plenty of rumors on the rumor mill that Windows Phone 7 will be following the 1980s "one app at a time" model too. I hope it's not true. Will we be able to develop applications that do work in the background? Is there any sort of "services" model?
3. I've read rumors that installation via non-services (such as Marketplace) will not be possible. As a power user, I like writing and getting free hobby tools that are only distributed as CABs. I don't care if it's a CAB, an EXE, or a MSI. Can we still install the apps we want without requiring Marketplace? Don't get me wrong. I love Marketplace, but there are some things (mostly open source or free apps) that that don't belong there.
I hope you can lay to rest some of these rumors very soon...
Thanks for the feedback. Developer story TBA @ MIX10. That's really all I can say.
Todd Brix announced the value the Marketplace brings to developers, along with the Race to Market Challenge winners and upcoming Marketplace enhancements. More details are available at windowsteamblog.com/.../marketplace-momentum.aspx
