Hi everyone. I know some of you are eager for Samsung Omnia 7 and Focus news.
Today we restarted updating Omnia 7 phones. The restart is happening in phases. Go to the Zune software and manually check for an update. If you don’t see one today, look again next Tuesday when we plan to deliver updates to additional Omnia 7 customers. Operators being targeted in later phases include Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and SFR.
What will be in the update? If you haven’t already received the March “copy and paste” update, you’ll receive one update that includes both “copy and paste” and 7392. If you installed copy and paste before we halted updates to Omnia 7s, you’ll just get 7392. You can learn more about our updates and how to install them from Update Central.
We don’t yet have an update readied for the Focus variant, but we are making solid progress. Mike or I will jump online when we have it definitively scheduled for you.
One final important note. A small number of people who’ve already installed the March “copy and paste” update on their Omnia 7 might have trouble installing 7392, but Samsung today published a new tool designed to fix this. If you get stuck during installation, please see this support article, which contains troubleshooting steps and a link to the new Samsung tool.
Eric Hautala, GM, Customer Experience Engineering
Thank you very much!
So to be clear, we use the new Samsung tool ONLY IF we encounter a problem yes?
I don't know what to say.....What about are you kidding us?! Next phase after another week?! We waiting for Pre-Nodo & Nodo from 22.3.2011. When I bought my Omnia MS said that updates will be availeble for all at the same time...this is laughable :)
@Imperial Dynamics: Yes. According to Samsung, this should impact a fairly small number of folks. According to the support article, you'll know if it impacts you because you're phone will get hung up during step 6 of the install and keep rebooting. If that doesn't happen, you're probably fine and don't need it.
Ok, so I have already installed the samsung patch today as not heard much about uk based install.
Bought phone as soon as came out at t-mobile, uk.
Still on 7004. No nodo, or pre nodo update, or that security patch.
Where does that leave me? I continue to wait patiently.
There are currently 2 problems for Users with the Samsung-Patch:
There is a version of the Bootloader (4.10.1.9) which does not allow to acces the Download Mode unless you use some USB Jig to force it, which makes it impossible for them to install this Update.
The other Problem is with the MacOS Users as Samsung only provides a Windows Version of it's update.
What is Microsoft's idea on how to solve this problem? The later can be kind of averted by using a friends pc but still this isn't looking too good.
@Pault: Your device has most likely a T-Mobile branding and therefore will be part of the second wave starting next week on tuesday (May 24th). At least that's how I understand the article.
@Pault. Thank you for your patience. T-Mobile UK isn't being targeted in this week's wave.
@StevieBallz: Thanks. My boot loader is sitting on 4.10.1.2 so maybe all is shortly to be good.
Happy for all this to just get sorted, so this blog does not continue to grow with more angry comments from other users in my position.
Thanks Michael for the info. Hope the samsung headaches go away from now on.
Great news - a very long time coming but great news all the same. Many thanks :-)
I quote "Operators being targeted in later phases include Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and SFR."
I'm on Orange in the UK, anybody know when these "Later Phases" with commence?
The situation is just crazy. Still waiting and waiting. Are you sure i get update next week?
Help! I have an Omnia 7 and after the update, it hangs. The Samsung tool doesn't work, it just says "wait the device" and my fingers are sore from holding the buttons. My phone is dead! What do I do?
My unlocked Omnia 7 has been updated (NoDo and 7392) THANK YOU, WINDOWS PHONE TEAM.
Now we are waiting for Mango update :-)
Just plugged my Omnia 7 into Zune and the update is showing up.
I am on Orange using an unbranded & unlocked Omnia 7.
Will re-post if all goes well.
@rcbapb: Please call the Samsung Support Center. Not sure where you're located, but there's a number listed in the support article linked above in Eric's post.
@Simon Blackburn: Awesome! Since your phone is unbranded, that makes sense. "Open market" phones were targeted today. Branded Orange phones won't see an update just yet, per Eric' post. Just to set expectations for anybody else reading and wondering.
It took quite some time to FINALLY get the update but still I'm convinced there could have been better ways of keeping the customers informed...
But still, finally it's on my Omnia :)
Hi Eric, my Omnia 7 is still stuck on 7004 and tells me its up to date, will this update it?
Omnia 7 - T-Mobile UK (aka Deutsche Telekom). Thanks for outlining that it will be next week. I'll just be glad to get the update. I sincerely hope Mango is smoother than this (as i'm sure you are). Your proposed update process was the precise reason why I didn't go for an Android device. At the moment though, you guys are doing the right things and keeping my faith.
@Alansonit: Thanks for the comment. Everyone here is acutely aware of what you guys are expecting from us for the Mango update. It's top of mind for everyone.
@danielfarah: Have you plugged into Zune and checked for an update? Who's your operator? If you're not seeing one today, your phone probably isn't being targeted in this week's wave.
Yaaaay. Finally got the update. Now hurry up with Mango! Thanks @Michael Stroh for ur updates on this update.
Got the update aswell, proof MS is and can control the update release/process.
To bad that the Zune client doesn't do an autolookup for the errorcode which i encountered at first: 801812DD
Was able to find the solution via the Help and Support part with clear instructions. Shouldn't be hard to implement, since in this case it was up for grabs. Did provide this suggestion as feedback and confirmed that the provided solution works. Hopefully it's used to provide better service in future.
@OrhanA: Great to hear--and great suggestion. It's on our radar.
@Michael Stroh, wow fast response, positively surprised. Glad to read it's appreciated, i'm full of good ideas :)
well this sounds great... but I am unable to enter the download mode on my Omnia 7 as described in the KB article - the Samsung tool is USELESS! This is so sad :( please give us a Nokia with WP7 - these Samsung devices suck badly when they should be updated!
Can someone explain why there is stll a holdup on the Focus? A different brand of memory really creates that big of a problem?
@myan strange, never heard of an Omnia7 not being able to enter download mode. You sure about the procedure ?
Check if the phone is capable of getting into the ‘download mode’. To do this: Turn off the phone (or remove > replace battery), then turn it back on by pressing the power/camera/VolumeUP buttons simultaneously. When the phone turns on, release the power button. If the phone shows the yellow triangle with exclamation and a “download mode” message, your phone is capable of getting into the ‘download mode’.
Btw, you do have that error for which you need the Samsung tool ? If not, you don't, or better yet shouldn't install it.
@OrhanA thanks for the help - nevertheless I am not able to enter the download mode... your description is the exact same as shown on the Samsung tool.... and that is what I am trying to do.... without success
When I start the phone with this method above to enter the download mode my phone hangs in the "samsung omnia 7" boot screen - I then have to remove the battery to start the phone again
Woo! Update successful on my Omnia7 with Optus. Thanks guys for taking the time to get this update right. Time for some Copy/Paste madness!
@myan: I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. Call the Samsung Support Center per the support article above.
@:jburch: I understand what you're saying. Although subtle, the difference was enough to require the creation and testing of a new update for that population of phones. Hence the delay. I'm sorry you're having to wait, but the team is working hard to get those back on track.
updated my Omnia 7 on Optus, Thanks to all WP7 Team, Great work Guys!!
I have had an issue that has been on again off again. When I try to send a text message , after I type what I want, I am unable to hit the send button at the bottom of the screen if the keyboard is up still. It does not detect any touch at the bottom of the screen. If I hide the keyboard I am unable to hit send. This issue is in email as weel as some other programs I believe. Also It says I have one update for an app, but when I go to marketplace I am unable to click on the "1 update" at bottom of the screen. I had this issues months ago and it went away. It is back now, has anyone else heard of this and is there any remedy for it?
As for the above I have a Samsung phone, I have updated twice to get copy and paste
To all the Omnia 7 users with Download Mode problem:
If you have Boot loader version (4.10.1.9) or a BRICKED PHONE, you need a USB jig. It is about $7.99 on EBAY, just search for “USB JIG Omnia 7” I had the same problem and USB JIG saved my bricked phone. TRY IT, IT WORKS.
Good to see! I'm not too worried about the 7392 update, I would just like everyone out there to have the 7390 update. Enjoying my phone a lot more since that update, and appreciate you all working with Chris Walsh to resolve that update issue as well. Even with all the missing features, NoDo is much more useable.
I'm also enjoying the articles providing some insight about the keyboard, and copy and paste. Good Stuff! Keep heading in that direction, you aren't there yet, but at least you've begun turning the train around, many of us can see that.
POST MY ATTENTION TO ENGLISH TRANSLATE (IS A SOLUTION FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO WAIT)

Adios.
Thank you, looking forward to Mango and beyond!
Flawless update process for my Omnia, thank you! Already looking forward to Mango...
" Operators being targeted in later phases include Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and SFR." this means...not in wave 2 next week, are you serious?
How many waves do you plan?
Have you any plans when the update will deliver to EVERYONE (will this happen ever?)?
Thank you sooooo much !!! MS you are awesome for not leaving us omnia and focus owners behind !!!! Very cool, thanks to everybody who helped fixing this issue !
Will ever Telefonica from Spain release any update?? It is the only mobile operator in the world which hasn't yet released any update for it's WP7 devices. Will this one arrive before WP7 gets fully obsolete?? Please MS press this mobile operator !!!
Thank you for the updatepost and being clear about the two phases of Omnia 7 update releases.
I'll look forward to Tues 24th May for Feb pre-update (7008) and then a combined March NoDo + May Security (7392) set of updates on my T-Mobile UK Samsung Omnia 7.
One thing you could have done clearer in this post and on the 'Where's my Update' international page is that 'Deutsche Telekom' is the parent company, whereas the consumer branding and mobile company is only known to the majority of people in most of Europe outside Germany as 'T-Mobile'. Took me a while to find that out when T-Mobile was 'missing' from your international page and you can see from the comments even here on this blog post it's still causing confusion for people.
If you check Wikipedia you'll clearly see that it is a 'T-Mobile [Country]' brand that people are aware of by default in Europe - en.wikipedia.org/.../T-Mobile
I suggest therefore that from now on it would be clearer and simpler if you just said 'T-Mobile (non-US)' when you want to specify all the non-US European operators.
Thanks!
Thank you guys, hope next updates will be there in time, anyway Good Job
But why so much time for these update... now I have to wait another week for my Omnia 7 T-Mobile...
Thank you Michael for being here for all of us, now Awesomely (If thats a word) i got the notification for a new update directly to my phone but at the end of the update (Through Zune), it doesnt have the problem that the samsung support tool suggests but i get the error code 80180048. Now I'll be honest, i did "walsh" my phone, but used the official tool to get it back on track, but nonetheless i'll try the samsung tool anyway and report back
Thanks Michael, Eric And Microsoft!
yipeee!!! It was a wonderful surprise when i checked my Omnia 7 today morning wherein there was a notification for an update and i immediately connected my phone & successfully updated...Everything works smoothly...I really appreciate the effort you guys at MS have put in sorting the update issue for Omnia 7 & now the wait is over..Thanks guys and special thanks to @Eric Hautala for regularly updating on this...Cheers
Thanks all for your works, and special thanks to Michael Stroh to be the first to tell us that the update was stopped.
hmm. ok, it didnt update the phone at all, just kept it at 7390
Well NoDo, sure, but I still haven't received the February update either. Will I get that too?
wow. Atlast a definite date. I'd have to wait for another week, but that's ok. Thanks for the update, Eric Hautala
All went smooth. Patience is a virtue. Thanks from a happy customer :)
Hi,
I have an unlocked unbranded Omnia 7 (Developer phone) on the three network in the UK, I had the NoDo update a while ago but checking after this it says my phone is up to date on (7390) is the 7392 update not yet available to UK Omnia 7's?
Thanks,
Jas
I'm stuck with an Omnia 7 having bootloader version 4.10.1.9, unable to install the Samung patch and the 7392 update. Can somebody tell me if samsung is working on a fix, as it seems ridiculous I'd need to buy a USB jig to get my device into download mode.
Awesome, Thanks guys - deployed to my partner and soon to my sister's Omnia 7.
Cheers. Roll on Mango!!
@ andreabarbera I am wondering the same.. but can't see how a fix can be applied without using download mode to update the bootloader. Just a tip if you don't have a usb jig and are handy with a soldering iron I believe you can make one with a simple 301k resisitor and a micro USB plug for next to nothing. Although whether you should have to go to this trouble on a new phone is open to opinion.
@sirrusty @andreabarbera damn this is soooo ridiculoius.... I have done nothing bad or unofficial to this phone... and now I have to order a jig to repair it wow... what has caused the damage that even a factory reset does not help.... sirrusty can you provide some further information for such a self made jig? I think I will try to build one by my own...
I wont go into too much detail myself as I don't want the blame if anyone does it wrong.... but type 301k resistor trick into bing or google . other samsung phones have had the same problem not just the omnia 7. people will have to judge their DIY ability and access to the components.. some will find it easier to order a ready built jig, some people may find it easier to get the components to build one depending on location.
Eric, I'm having a problem with updating my Omnia 7. After using the Samsung Tool and then trying to update to 7392. Zune gets stuck on step 6 and the phone keeps getting stuck at the "Samsung Omnia 7" boot screen and it keeps restarting and restarting but still stuck at "Samsung Omnia 7" bootscreen.
If I pull out the cable, sometimes the phone gets bricked but when I try to update using the Samsung tool again to fix the phone, I can boot up fine but the phone is stuck at 7390.
My samsung omnia 7 just updated to 7392 and is Oputs branded so that's good news for others who want to know. My question is though, why when Nodo was first updated it took 2 months for Optus and other telcos to test and update and release but now the day MS re-release it we get it straight away?? Surely the new update that works on Samsung would had have to go through the same "rigorous" testing it did before so make sure all is ok? Or is this a sign that from now telcos won't need to be involved in the update process??
Still on 7390 (bootloader 4.10.1.9). Stuck in reboot, download-modus not starting.
Like @ andreabarbera says; it seems ridiculous I'd need to buy a USB jig to get my device into download mode.
Any ideas (other then buying a non samsung wp7)
@ SaaMocin unfortunetly the only other options seem to be as Michael says above contact a samsung service centre who will do the jig trick for you (they may also update the phone so you dont have the same problem in the future, thats pure speculation). The Jig seems to be the only fix that does not involve sending your phone away or getting a new one if you have insurance.
I'd love to know the story about the problem: what caused it, how it was found, what was needed to solve it.
Okay, maybe I'm just dense and didn't see this elsewhere, but did all updates to the Focus stop because of the issue with 1.4 versions of the phone? Mine is a 1.3 version and it's already updated to NoDo, but I've seen no activity on the 7392 update yet. I guess I just don't understand enough about exactly how the "phasing" works with update deployment (e.g., what is the control mechanism).
Why has the "Where's my phone update" page NOT been updated this 5-3-2011? It does not reflect the 7392 update (I am an AT&T customer with a Samsung Focus)
another week, I am ok with that, at least we know when we will get the update
Just to be clear: If get myself the USB jig and install the Samsung patch and the 7392 update, will my phone then still require the USB jig each time I have to install an update, or will the Samsung patch resolve the download mode impossibility? I'm not sending my phone away for servicing, that could take three to four weeks probably. For the record: I did not do anything to the phone besides installing the official updates through the Zune client.
To go to download mode: press Volume Up and Camera
just two buttons. Make sure you press Volume Up not "Somewhere there" button.
I updated mine yesterday - was the first one on "Dude WIMU"
@ andreabarbera
The problem is the version of the bootloader (4.10.1.9), can you check if, after the Samsung fix, the version is still the same?
Anyway you can try to go in download mode without JIG...
I have applied Samsung fix (and 7.0.7392) - Bootloader version is 4.11.0.3
Just to add, I'm still stuck at rebooting cycle. Bootloader version is 4.11.0.3
I'm having BootLoader v 4.10.1.9, I'm about to send back my phone in the hopes that Samsung will update the phone.
I'm wondering if buying a jig would really fix it, AND if it would allow to update the phone afterwards like any other "normal" Omnia 7... above that, I wonder that if I buy the jig, and update the USB Driver (which is what the Samsung update tool does), that I will still have that crappy BootLoader version which makes my phone hang when the battery is dead and I recharge it (this alway happens now).
to Zulhardy: sure you restarted Zune and reconnected phone after Samsung fix, didn't you?
Please repost your problem here with your bootloader version at this link.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php
@Oleg Yes tried more than 6 times already. Still stuck at rebooting.
@ Michael Stroh, thank you for the add'l info on Focus variant 1.4. It's encouraging to see the Omnia 7 back up and running - just hope the efforts on the Focus were running in parallel with the Omnia efforts. Will keep checking back, but again would like to throw out the request that some news be delivered in a week's time - even if the fix isn't fully prepared - just to keep us informed.
I'm a big fan of WP7 thus far - so much so that I got you guys two new converts over the weekend, so keep it up.
Right, so when i have been asking on this blog for weeks and weeks "am i going to have problems with my phone after officialy updating to NoDo when prompted by my carrier" and you completely ignorned me and others. The answer was in fact, yes you are going to have problems and we are then going to tell you to call a number for support from samsung that isn't even freephone.
I have the 4.10.1.9 bootloader. To be told this makes me pretty angry, i have been such a strong supporter of MS over the years. I've bought pretty much every release of windows, i've had both XBox consoles and windows mobile now windows phone devices. Way to reward loyalty... call this number.
What are they going to tell me to do? Some info would be nice.
@ andreabarbera I believe from what I can work out you would need the jig in the future if you require to get back into download mode as I dont think the patch does anything with the bootloader... don't quote me on that yet though...
using it in the future shouldnt cause any issues appart from remembering where you store it, the loader itself is just missing the 3 key combination to access download mode and the USB jig thing is just replicating what samsung use.
Well, I managed to update my phone with bootloader 4.10.1.9, but nog before spending € 1 to buy three resistors at my local electronics store and follow the instructions in this video: www.youtube.com/watch . I managed to get the phone in download mode, install the Samsung patch, and the 7392 update without problems after that. The bootloader version after that is still 4.10.1.9, but I suspect the Samsung patch fixed the download mode problem as the phone rebooted without a problem during installation of the 7392 update and managed to install the error without error.
There are lots of problems reported so far.
My: Bootloader ver. 4.10.1.9
1. If using Samsung update tool – Cant get the phone in DL mode.
- On the phone: rebooting process stack on “Samsung Omnia 7” white color msg.
2. Via Zune - reported that update is available .
- I started the update but process stack on “rebooting the phone” page. ( page 6 of 10 )
- The update zune error code is because I have to disconnect the USB cable – reboot and connect again.
More info here at XDA :
I just tested my phone, still running bootloader 4.10.1.9 but updated with the Samsung patch and 7392, and now it seems to react when powering up holding the camera button + volume up buttons. The phone now displays the "connect to computer" picture, whereas before it would just show the Samsung Omnia 7 logo. It doesn't show the "Download mode" message with the yellow triangle though.
"Operators being targeted in later phases include Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and SFR". Hey, don't rush guys. I'm sure there are lots of other phones that need updating as well. Oh wait, no there isn't. Oh well, what's another week on top of the 13 or so I've waited so far.
Failed! I had not problem until now. Samsung Omnia 7 unbranded. Update hangs at step 6 - reboot.
Got the device update support tool. It won't connect. Samsung don't want to know Where do I go...
@andreabarbera 3 resistors? I take it you used 300K (3 X 100k) with them wired in series instead of 301k. If so thats good news.. will be even easier for people to get hold of the right values.
So what's the USB jig? Samsung (called the UK as there is no contact number for Switzerland) say all problems are Microsofts. They suggest a factory reset. But I don't want to loose all the stuff I cna't backup...
@Michael Stroh: you've been posting a lot of replies on this thread (thanks for that), but still no answer regarding the mysterious 7392 update. Is it being distributed for AT&T Focus users (who already have NoDo -- I'm not referring to those unlucky 1.4 users who haven't even gotten NoDo yet), or not?
When it was first released, there seemed to be a flurry of people getting it, but nothing since.
So have you stopped distributing 7392 to AT&T Focus users? Please, tell us what's going on. It doesn't seem like that's too much to ask.
A USB Jig is just a really simple device to get your phone into download mode if it wont in the usual way.. it works on several samsung phones that have certin issues... if you can get into download mode you dont need it...
@andreabarbera I love the sticky tape solution in that video link you posted... forget what I said about soldering!! unless you want a permanant one for next time.
Well I keep on reading but think I'm at a dead end : bootloader 4.10.1.9 ! Perhaps MS needs to manage the firmware as well as the software...
This sucks big time. I have a Samsung Omnia with boot loader 4.10.1.9 and I am not able to update. MS say call Samsung support. Samsung say this is MS fault. Nice to know they care about their customers
@Carol Chisholm
I've got the same issue also located in Switzerland. Do you have any news about this issue?
I've got an unbranded Samsung Omnia 7 bought from brack mägenwil with booloader 4.10.1.9 which is not upgradeable to 7392 because of the missing download mode.
Where did you bought your phone?
Wow, how on earth can Samsung say the bootloader issue is a Microsoft problem? SAMSUNG deviated from the approved spec, not Microsoft! Man, I hate companies that try to pull that garbage.
@ Carol Chisholm I will try and help you decide if you need a Jig... There are very few dead ends.. just pesky little problems that stop one thing working.. lets see if i can help you through them..
you have the bootloader that cant boot to download mode (some lucky ones can.. but most with that number cant).. without access to the download mode you cant apply the samsung fix and it wont connect to the device.. A USB Jig (either homemade for about £1/$1/1Euro, or purchased from ebay or somewhere if you dont want to do it your self (trust me its easy)) should solve your problem as you will then be able to connect to install the samsung patch after plugging the jig in. hope thathelps... or am I reading your issue wrong?
I think the support issue does need sorting though.. for people who do not feel comfortable with such fixes someone should take responsibilty and sort them.
@ Michael Stroh - Would you be able to confirm or deny (or find out) if carriers determine what keyboard language package is installed on our WP7? I have an HTC Arrive and it ONLY shows the US English package. I read that some owners with different phones and carriers have multiple keyboard language packages AND if Sprint is the one limiting me to only US English (I am multilingual) THEN I will have to deal with them (or them with me) directly.
@ Everyone else with an HTC Arrive – Have any of you already received the 7392 update?
Hi. I have bought a Samsung Omnia 7 from Germany. I bought it for its wonderful display. It is a T-mobile device, that is officially unlocked. My bootloader is 4.10.1.9. When I first bought it it came with 7004. I debranded (my phone is developer unlocked) it and I managed this way to get the February update to 7008. After that and at least till Monday Zune did n't gave me a newer update. Since I wanted to test Nodo -regardless the risk of bricking my device - I followed the following guide.
1. Start Zune
2. Turn off Data connection and Wifi on the Phone
3. Connect the Phone with the PC (USB)
4. Start the update search in Zune
5. About 3 seconds later, disconnect your PC from the internet (Turn WLAN off or just unplug your Ethernet cable).
6. Zune finds NoDo-Update. Press OK.
7. Connect to the internet again and install the update.
Everything worked as described except step 6, which gave an immediate update to 7392. The installation was flawless but I am not sure if this was luck or the way it should be. I don't know if any pf these helps but you should be aware that anything beside the official method is at your own risk and that you should n't blame anyone if you came out with a bricked phone.
@pergrill: I'm sorry that you're getting the runaround--that's always frustrating. I mentioned your case to our support team and they've reached out to their counterparts at Samsung. Anyone on this thread encountering a problem after trying the Samsung tool or with their Omnia's bootloader should contact the Samsung Support Center. It's possible that a few of their support staffers might not have gotten the memo. That can happen despite good intentions or preparation.
This is sooooo sad.... it feels harder and harder to defend win phones from day to day - I know guys that told white lies to others that asked about the update procedure.... just to keep a good impression for the phone!!!
Tomorrow I will try to force my omnia into download mode with a self-made jig...
I will then post some results here... hope this helps
i'm scared to get my phone swapped out (ive got insurance so i dont have to wait for repair) so i'll stick to my already replaced one that the bluetooth actually works perfectly on but has a dodgy but Jigable bootloader thanks! best of two evils. my Samsung TV works great, my Samsung camera is amazing, my Samsung TFT monitor is brilliant... so why so many issues with the phones?
Hi, First of all; many thanks for all the updated information!
Secondly; I have a T-Mobile Uk, UNLOCKED Omnia 7 and i live in Malta .. Im on bootloader 4.10.1.9 and version 7004.. Zune is telling me that my phone is up to date when obviously this is not the case. When will i be receiving my update as i live in malta, have a fully unlocked phone yet its branded to t-mobile... ??? .. many thanks in advance!
I think it is important to say thanks where thanks is due.
Thanks to all the MS team. I imagine it is very diffciult to deal with all of us pressuring you to get it right.
With some resevations which i am getting used to not having, (considering i loved Win Mo first) I do love the WP7 concept. Well done from the begining and for your ongoing work.
Cheers
Michael is there any word for those where the tool does not work??? I'm still stuck at with the rebooting issue. And Samsung says to call you guys. Frankly I'm getting a little tired of being a tennis ball.

Yes indeed, as I have a branded AT& T Focus (Rev 1.3), that updated flawlessly to v7390 NoDo, but still am not getting any updates through Zune for v7392 SSL update....(May 3rd update)...As I still see some of my fellow AT&T Focus (Rev 1.3) colleagues are still experiencing too...
i'm gonna call up samsung in the UK and see if they are better prepared today... cant believe they are sending people back to MS for the bootloader... its a problem on non ms phones too and has been for quite some time. back soon with a score out of 10.
HAHAHA I just tried to call samsung and it says "we are currently experiencing telecom dificulties, we appologise for any inconvienience this may cause, if you are having problams please go to our website... or call back later!!"
right so far the guy i'm now talking to has not heard of the bootloader problem as is asking his boss.
just got cut off... try again.
To all you that have the wrong bootloader version (4.10.1.9), I got a confirmation from @SamsungMobileNL that they (Samsung) are working on a tool to fix the problem.
In case you can't wait for that : go buy 3 resistors (100K Ohm) bind them together, wrap them in tape and force your Omnia7 into "download mode" by poking on the right side of the usb jack... search on youtube for "Unbrick your Samsung Captivate or Galaxy S device for only", it will lead you to a video where they explain how to do it... I heard it worked fine for at least 1 user (@jeroentje_com) and he got the spot right from the very first time (not like in the video).
The second person I spoke to said she had not heard of it either and went away to check... came back with advice to take my phone 20 miles away to a service centre but still blamed it on the software.. its an answer i guess... 5/10 because they at least acknowledged it now.
Just called my local service center who said they didnt know if they could replace the bootloader with a different version that wouldn't have ther same problem in the future and they would need to be left the phone and may need to send it away.... jolly nice chaps though.
right... i need to get on with some real work... spent far too much time investigating phone problems recently folks. Good luck all people with the dodgy bootloader, whether you jig or visit a service centre or get a replacement on your insurance... Thankyou microsoft for your work behind the scenes on the problems and for what is basically a great OS.
@gahbmwm5, I'm in the same boat. Sitting pretty with NoDo, but not a peep on the 7392 front. I really do suspect, now, that nobody else with a Focus is getting that update until the fix for the 1.4 ver devices is released.
"Operators being targeted in later phases include Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and SFR."
Wait, what?! You can't say "later phases" but show "Delivering update" here:
www.microsoft.com/.../update-schedule-world.aspx
That page should reflect accurate and current information so please change to "Scheduling" or you make that page even more useless than it already is!!
I think the smartest thing Samsung could do is to ship a USB jig to every user running bootloader 4.10.1.9 , that would cost them like almost nothing and would solve the problem in a matter of seconds for everyone. I fixed two Omnia 7's using the "three resistors" trick, worked like a charm.
Yeap, just to echo some of the others on here... I used the patch tool regardless of whether the update would have worked fine or not. Then, after trying to apply the 7392 update, it went into the loop. A seemingly clueless Samsung representative also told me to contact Microsoft since it has nothing to do with them (which is a blatant lie). Currently I'm just waiting on further info to come out regarding this... Hopefully it doesn't matter too much that I used the patch regardless.
@florinr08 ring samsung again nicely tell them Microsoft advised you to call, tell them about this page and that others have been advised they can get their handets fixed at local service centres if they wish (which I don't) it took a bit of me explaining the situation to them earlier and people going away to speak to bosses... but they do get it in the end if you say the right things.
@sirrusty I must have explained my situation and the problem like three times to the lady! :P She gave me a reference number to give if I call back, but what would they do if they do get it? I don't want to send my phone in either. :/
@florinr08 can you confirm the boot loader version on your phone? if its the dodgy one that cant get to download mode there are easy ways of getting it sorted without sending it back... if you managed to intall the samsung patch before you may have another problem.
hopefully someone from Microsoft will be on here shortly to say they have been on Samsungs case again about the lack of support... I don't mind trying to help people if I can... its in my nature.. but really it shouldnt be down to customers of two of the worlds biggest companies in the world to support each other...
has anyone on here apart from me had a positive reaction when they called samsung or has everyone who has tried ended up being told to contact Microsoft?
I am on Orange in the UK... what exactly does later phases and I note plural mean? You guys will have a plan set out why not just release it? When the iPhone gets an update they all get it at the same time irrespective of operator. I can't wait until a Nokia Windows Phone comes out as we all know it will get the updates perfectly!
@sirrusty they told me to hard reset my phone lol.... I have done that a several times before... what a ridiculous advice - they should know that this does not fix a broken bootloader.
I have T-Mobile UK unlocked Omnia 7 and I'm still on 7004. Zune does not show even pre-NoDo update (7008). Is this normal? I didn't use any unlocking tool, nor Samsung patch, phone is new, and it just can't detect any updates through Zune.
@sirrusty - Cheers for the info dude, i've been abroad and not had a chance to really look into this. Your updates are greatly appreciated!
Out of interest what network in the UK are you on?
@mcoulter785 I am on T-Mobile(Deutsche Telekom) and i think we are getting update next Tuesday (24th of May). At least i understood it so.
@Freypal no worries... I've never seen myself as some kind of consumer avenger before! I guess having past experience in IT support is just haunting me... I can't help it!! I hope i'm not getting anyones backs up at MS or people trying to read the other comments... is there a propper forum set up for WP7 users?
I'm on Orange in the UK so havent had the updates yet... i'm not bothered about that one bit, couldnt really care if i never got it (i'm holding out for mango to make a massive difference, copy and paste don't really turn me on) but do/did have the bootloader download issue.
@sirrusty - I don't think you will get any backs up it's really useful advice! With regards to forums i'm not sure. I use the XDA Developers forums where there is an Omnia 7 and WP7 section that is full of people with the bootloader issue.
I haven't been prompted for the update yet as I am also on Orange - I was "unlucky" enough to have updated mine to NoDo when prompted before it got pulled. I find it deeply ironic that MS told people not to Walsh their phones to get NoDo as it would "put them in a state where they are unable to receive future updates". Exactly the situation we are now in by using the official channels.
I also have insurance through Orange so was going to give them a call. I assume this kind of thing is covered so i won't need to send it into a service center.
@myan you should have asked them if thats before or after putting it in a toaster... both have the same chance of fixing the bootloader.
I really want to call Samsung now and see what advice i'm given. I'll give them a call tomorrow and report back!
@Freypal yes, when I talked to my local service centre earlier I said i wouldnt be bringing my phone in to be sent away (40 mile round trip X2), I told him I had insurance if needed and he confirmed that was the better way to go so you dont loose the phone for days/weeks.. as I mentioned above be careful about swapping your phone if you have one that bluetooth works on... a lot don't and i doubt orange know which ones have which bootloader so you may just end up with another. you may be better off sticking with a dodgy bootlader for now and using the jig as lets be honest.. how often are we actually going to need download mode.
@sirrusty - True - My bluetooth does work however it has just developed a rather annoying fault with HD video recording not working properly any more! I am going to wait and see what happens when this is officialy pushed to Orange customers - Some have reported that they have been able to install the update with the 4.10.1.9 bootlaoder on XDA.
You are right too - I don't really care if i can access download mode or not. I just want to be able to receive mango properly when it arrives. The prospect of jigging my phone is worrying though.
@Freypal I believe both the purchased Jigs and the homemade copies using either 3 X 100K resistors or one 301k resistor are just coppies themselves of part of what samsung engineers and production lines have... pins 4&5 on the usb port do download mode, combinations of different pins do different things (i'm not trying to find others I dont want to blow my phone up! neither should anyone else) all it does is the same as pressing the buttons on a working one... its just a hangover from manufacture and (ahem) support. i had a little chat with the guy at the local support centre today about them and he didnt tell me not to use one.
Infact he told me one of the other things you can do with them.
@sirrusty lol yeah thats true; as sad it is...
Well, the one and only thing I would like to see is success - success for Windows Phone 7 - my favourite mobile platform.
Therefore I would like to have a competitive phone in my pocket that is ready for the newest version called Mango later this year... because I think Mango will make WP7 even superior! I have a WP7 from day one and I really love it - to be honest I never thought that MS is able to design such a great system - very stable, fast and beautiful - I guess Metro design is the best thing out there... I love to see it on tablets (Win8)!
As I abhor bashing in this blog I (and we?) only try to report problems to help making WP7 better - sorry Windows Phone team if this should discourage you sometimes. I really like the way of your participation in this blog - I think this is a prime example for such a huge company.
Everyday I am trying to motivate people to use my Windows Phone 7 as I like them to convince to buy a WP7 too... the platform needs users!
As a developer and strong supporter of most Microsoft products I would like to see:
- Microsoft being as strong as in its old days...
- I would like to see it as a mayor player in the mobile space equally successful as in the desktop area
- I would like to see that Gartner is right when market leadership is prognosticated for 2013, as incredible it may sound. The possiblities with the Nokia partnership and the Skype deal are incredible - please make the best of it!
AND:
(this may sound pathetic)
- as for the day Ballmer steps down as CEO of this great company I would like to see one of you Windows Phone team guys to be the new CEO - your performance has been great so far - nevertheless let's face the new adventures!
There is one last thought: Please never forget the folks outside the U.S: there are strong supporters all over the world for this platform - please make use of them by providing a better international appearance in the future ;)
the safer way to make a jig... instead of just holding the resister/s into the plug like the linked video above, get a spare micro USB cable... take/cut the plastic off so you can get to the back of the pins and solder the resistor/s onto the pins making sure you dont have short and you have done the right pins and usec the right values before plugging it into your phone.
@sirrusty yeah I will do it that way ... here is some help for people to locate the correct pins on a USB cable: img44.imageshack.us/.../i900.jpg
so pins 4&5 have to be connected by the use of the 301k resistor...
@myan cool statement... I love the vibe of this thread. everyone friendly and trying to help each other instead of the bickering (that yes i admit i took part in... sorry) last week. nobody throwing their toys out of their pushchairs because they can't get to download mode and talking about fixes instead of saying WP7 sucks... 1000% improvement.
@sirrusty - Thanks again, really useful info. I'm gonna call Samsung in a bit when their lines open and will post here what response I get.
I understand this is a difficult position for Microsoft and they are leaving themselves open to flak by even having this blog here for which I applaud them. Samsung are being pretty faceless in all of this and for that reason I am more angry with them. I really love WP7 and I am just angry that Samsung are ruining the experience of it for me and many others. The Nokia merger cannot come soon enough.
First and last Samsung device i buy. I will however continue with WP7 as it is a great bit of software.
Samsung should put a blog or a kb site themselves online dealing with this issue, right?
@ Chris Richner they should... But there are much more than WP7 samsungs affected by this and I dont think they want to publicly offer reparirs for the download mode problem.
as @ andreabarbera said above.. i think tyey sould offer a USB jig to anyone who doesnt want to make or buy one to avoid having to sent phones away.
have I been stopped posting? ive tried to appologise for my bad spelling about 5 times and it's not showing?
Just got off the phone to Samsung support and they deny any knowledge/responsibility of/for the problem. Apparently it is Microsoft software ergo Microsoft's problem.
I pointed out that this is also a known problem on Android handsets manufactured by Samsung and an issue that only affects Samsung models. This was apparently irrelevant and it is for Microsoft to sort out.
This is pretty frustrting.
@ Freypal so i'm still the only one who they have offered to fix the problem for... must have been because i was documenting the phone calls here!
@sirrusty - It seems so! I offered to give the woman on the phone the address for the MS support page stating the problem but apparently this wasn't enough.
I may call back again and see if someone else is aware. The woman said she went and checked with her supervisor regarding the problem so it seems the lack of knowledge is fairly high up.
@ Freypal Early on in my IT career I worked on a service desk for a while after helping set it up.. what some of my colleagues knew about what they were supposed to be supporting could be written on this full stop .
@ Freypal two hints for getting what you want to hear. Dont let them give you a refference number and end the call till you have what you want... It hurts their stats to have calls lasting too long. accidentaly drop really small hints that you may be investigating on behalf of others after complaints... but never spell it out in as many words and deny it if they ask who for.
Hahaha! Wow, I am surprised at the serious lack of knowledge on Samsung's part... -.- Anyway, @sirrusty I never had the faulty bootloader, I'm on 4.11.0.3 after NoDo updated it from 4.9.2.9 in March. I also applied the Samsung patch twice thinking it might somehow reverse what it did the first time, but it just always says my phone needs the patch regardless.
I'm getting tired of Samsung and feel rather sorry for Microsoft for taking some people's rants that it's all their fault... Samsung is a big player and they can't just leave them out of the game but their support is really atrocious!
Did I read somewhere yesterday that Samsung was working on yet another fix or am I just imagining?
@florinr08 someone mentioned a fix for the bootloader, I may be wrong but don't see how they can fix the bootloader download mode without being able to get into download mode. The only thing of any use I can offer with your problem is that something may be stopping the update like an installed app or something. you could if you havent (i reluctantly say this because it is usually totally unnessasary and a pain in the arse to reinstall your stuff again) try a hard reset and run the update to the 7392 on a clean phone with no other gubbins on it... if you try that and it doesnt work... sorry, its only me guessing.
This is NOT working. The phone never enteres download mode. I'm starting to ge really really feed up now. I'm ready to throw windows phone in the bin and get something else. Why the bloody hell make such a complicated update procedure in the first place?
@sirrusty hmmm well I really don't want to lose some unrecoverable things like text messages (for the most part), I don't mind reinstalling all the apps again, but will it make a difference if I said the Zune reports 226 MB of free space while the phone says 1.10 GB? And Zune also says that 4.37 GB is "reserved space and content from other computers (if any)". That part, I don't get... But maybe I should try free up some space somehow, I do have quite a few trials installed and should I maybe try delete cache data and stuff? If only we could back up and restore our text messages..... I feel so attached to them! :P
@Dark jedi do you mean doesnt enter download mode using the three buttons? or the USB Jig? never heard of the USB Jig trick not working.
@florinr08 i think thats your best try... remove what you can as I guess the update probably needs a certain abount of space to unpack itself. anyone else know if this is the case?
@sirrusty, I have used the official procedure. I'm a ordinary user of a phone and I'm not really prepared to play around with what appears to be home made hardware on my phone.
I'm in the same boat as florinr08. Same 4.11.0.3 bootloader but still stuck at looping boot issue even with Samsung fix applied.
@sirrusty fair enough... its not an MS problem though, other samsung phones cant get to download mode either... good luck with their support though... so far i'm the only person on here who has been offered a fix albeit one i'm not going to take and it took a bit of persuading them nicely to admit they should fix it (samsung)
haha i just addressed myself! i'm a looser.
its like blaming microsoft if you have a PC that wont enter BIOS setup or boot to CD.
@sirrusty yeah exactly!
@Zulhardy let me know if you come across a solution... I will too. Btw, how much free space have you got? How much does Zune say and how much does the phone say?
@florinr08
Phone has about 2.2GB and Zune says I have 1.1GB due to reserved space (Zune on home PC and laptop at work). Phone has a lot of stuff in there that I just don't feel like restoring my backup. Sigh.
And not to mention that over the 20 times I tried to use the Samsung tool and trying to get Zune to update the phone pass step 6, it would not get pass the Samsung Omnia 7 screen even after disconnecting the cable. I thought I bricked my phone for good.
I used the Samsung tool a few times to bring the phone back to life (seems its only good at that) and decided that I didn't want to risk bricking the phone permanently..
@Zulhardy if you simply take the battery out for a couple of seconds it should boot up fine. I think even holding the power button to turn it off and then turning it back on after like 10 seconds should work too. I just hope we're not left with having to hard-reset our phones to get to this update and/or future ones.
@sirrusty. Yes you could say that but i think it's making it a bit too easy. Microsoft should have tested the update procedures on the rather few handsets that where out there at the beginning. The update procedure should really be robust. It's Microsoft that designed this update procedure where you have to connect to the Zune software.
It's probably pointless to go into a long debate over who's fault it is.
Bottom line is that I have bought a Windows Phone 7 and so far my sync with my SkyDrive photo albums have stopped working, I cannot buy from the marketplace since my country was set to US (I'm an international civil servant so it's not that strange that it was set to US but I do not have a US credit card) on the account and I can not change it due to the way Microsoft deesigned the software and I cannot change the account without resetting the phone reinstalling everything and now I can not update the bloody thing so I am a very unhappy customer of Windows Phone 7 and I am considering to choose something else in the (near?) future...
I have always been somewhat of a Micrsoft fan but right now I am very very unhappy with my Microsoft Phone...full stop.
@Zulhardy @florinr08 to rule out a space issue we need to ask somewhere (here or XDA) whats the lowest amount of free non reserved space available that people have had when sucsessfully instaling 7392.
@Dark jedi i got sucked into an argument about fault berore... it wont happen again trust me. I'm just here trying to help people not get frustrated and try and help create an environment where people talk about and sort issues rather than fight about them as in the past. I want people with technical ability to try help people who are confused by the issues with their phones... i'm not happy 100% with my phone.. 1st one went back with dodgy bluetooth, then to find out samsung have issued phones that have faulty a faulty bootloader does annoy me.. but thats how it is, dealing with it is far more of a pleasure than kicking off about it. Good luck with however you choose to to get your phone sorted.
@sirrusty Thanks for your reply. I admire your attitude. Got my phone from MediaMarkt in Geneva. Will harrass them about it since they have a service desk where I can actually go and talk to someone. I certainly hope they will manage to fix it (and are willing to do so) otherwise I will get...well...somewhat upset about the entire thing.
Have a nice weekend !
I think basically people with 4.10.1.9 bootloader have two options.
A) Jig the phone either using something off ebay or use the resistor trick to enter download mode and apply the Samsung patch.
or
B) Wait for some more official info - It's pretty clear that at the moment Samsung are not accepting any responsibility.
Frustrating - But really Samsung are being very poor. I do have sympathy for MS in this instance.
I got it down to Zune saying 3.12 GB free and the phone saying 4.00 GB but the update still does the exact same thing with the boot looping over and over. I'm still not convinced this hasn't anything to do with Samsung...
Is it my eyes or is there a line in the Samsungs own tool that says "if you're having problem in using this tool or making the device enter download mode, please contact the service center." ... yeah nice one samsung!
@ florinr08 the bootloader one is samsungs in my eyes. the 7392 actual update one you have is still unknown but seems related to some samsung hardware.. whether its samsungs or microsofts bad is still up for grabs on that one.
@sirrusty yeap, it does say that in Samsung's tool even though when you do contact them, they deny all responsibility.
I just hope someone comes out with a news update on what's happening with this bug. Samsung should, I would think, but maybe Microsoft will take their cover...
@florinr08 as your phone is doing what the tool was supposed to fix i'm guessing there is a slightly different hardware version that is not covered by the tool... thats just me putting 1&1 together though.. no evidence yet. expect a version 1.3 of the tool soonish! not sure what happened to versions 1.0 and 1.2... i think we may have found the reason for the delay in getting the updates re-released!
@sirrusty yeah, I hope that's the reason and that they're on it! :P But what do you mean about the updates being re-released? I thought the ones for the Omnia 7 were already resumed and that's why my phone keeps bugging me to update... :P
@florinr08 sorry i was joking about the time between them being pulled the first time and then restarting.. there was lots of speculation about the delay, i was just imagining samsung taking ages to get the tool right while microsoft took all the flack.
i'm starting to sound like a samsung 'hater'! believe me i'm not.. see above I have quite a few samsung products and this is the first to give me any grief.
@sirrusty oh right, yeah I don't think I was fully on track when that happened so that's why I wasn't sure what you were on about haha :P
Bootloader problem is a known issue of Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Captivate and Omnia 7 phones. Upgrading firmware is the only way to fix these phones forever. I mangaed to upgrade my Omnia 7's firmware, the most stable and official firmware for Samsung Omnia 7 is " I8700BSEJK1 ". If you search the web, you can find a lot of info about the firmware.
If you have Bootloader (4.10.1.9) or a bricked phone, you must have USB JIG in order to upgrade your phone's firmware.
@VictorWPB I think mine is I8700XXJK1 - is that similar to what you have?
Or how about CSC: I8700H3GJK1? I'm assuming the H3G is the operator, Hutchinson 3G.
@VictorWPB Thanks for that.. just a quick note folks... flashing firmware and going further than starting download mode with a Jig may get you in warrentee trouble. i'm not an expert on this so do your own checking if you dont want to void it.
@ florinr08 I8700H3GJK1 and I8700BSEJK1 are the same firmware, but I8700BSEJK1 is fully unbranded and unlocked. I have it on my phone and I'm very happy with it.
I8700BSEJK1 is the first one that receives the MS updates. I have tried different firmware but this one is the best.
Don't flash your firmware. You will lose everything on your phone. I'm just going to wait for MS and Samsung to release another tool for us 4.11.03 bootloader.
@VictorWPB oh right, thanks. I once unbranded it via the registry to cheat my way into getting NoDo faster but then I placed the original key back. Now I got the notification for this update along with when the "open-market" phones got it too. I mean, I don't mind being unbranded if I am, but if in the future I play around with flashing custom firmware on my phone, I'll most probably install a completely unbranded one since I like being freeeee! :P
@sirrusty and @Zulhardy yeah I know if I flash custom firmware I will break the warranty and lose everything on the phone, I've had flashing experience so I would know what I'd be doing if I were to go ahead and flash it but for the moment I too will be waiting for an updated tool from either companies. :)
As none of us are being either thanked or spanked for posting fixes/workarounds Involving Resistors Jigs and Firmware flashes I guess there is no problem in us talking about them.. Just be aware there are fine lines between what they officialy have to tell you to do (contact service centres), probably don't mind us talking about too much as its not altering the phones (Jigs) and things they would probably like left to sites like XDA(Firmware). as was said by someone above microsoft are probably leaving themselves open for a kicking just by the blog comments being left here (which I also admire).. its nice to be un-moderated.
@Zulhardy @florinr08 i'm gonna give samsung a call and try and report that the tool isnt working for some so they have one more request to investigate to see if a new version of the tool is needed if they don't have enough already (i'm sure they do, but lets be fair, the service centres probably wont have passed on your problems if they don't understand them or just log them as microsofts fault.).. unless they are reading this blog, in which case stop reading this and go fix some phones!
I have an Omina 7 from Movistar (Spain). I haven't received any updates yet (I'm still using 7004 firmware). What would happen if I use Windows Phone Support Tools if I haven't received any update error? Would it update my phone? I'm not talking about 'walshing' my phone or something, just using a MS official tool.
Finally got my Omnia7 in update mode, by using an USB jig. After running the Samsung device update support tool, Zune updated my phone perfectly. I’m ready to eat some mango’s now.
Shame Samsung Netherlands claimed not to have any information regarding the update issue. It’s ridiculous I had to buy the USB jig to get it working.
@sergio31 Running the tool will not help you get updates faster.. Its only for use on some phones if one of the updates 7392 fails.
@sirrusty Thank you so much. I'm from Singapore by the way and the Samsung contact in that KB article is in the UK so I'm very thankful for your help.
@sirrusty did you manage to give them a call? Anything new other than their accusations to Microsoft? :P
@florinr08 I havent yet.. sorry. i'm just catching up with some work and figured it wouldnt make much difference as its a weekend so even if they listen it wont get escelated till monday... also less people of power are usually available to ask to get put though to or for them to go ask what to do. I will do though and keep you posted. I bet microsoft wish they had just released an xbox phone and handled the hardware themselves... the Xphone.. theres an idea.
It's ok Sirrusty. I just hope that at the end of this entire saga, I will not have to send my phone to some service center. It this was the Mango update, I'd be so angry at Samsung.
@Zulhardy yeah you are right.. if this had not come to light till Mango there would be lots of people going nuts as it promisses to be a major step forward. I know i'll probably get flamed for saying this but In some ways its good the problems are showing themselves now. Remember faults are faults.. no one would have meant to cause problems, its how they deal with them that they will be judged by next time we all upgrade.
@sirrusty Yeah that's fine, just wondering. :P And yeah, I would have liked a Windows Phone made by them too but they're more of a software company, right? But then again, they made the Surface and all the things at Microsoft Hardware so a phone would have been nice.. But I do remember some saying they're getting other manufacturers do the phones for them because they wanted their OS publicised faster.
Samsung won't get the better of me next time, even if it means switching network providers (*sigh*) to get away from them.
hey friends; i just read that the Omnia 7 firmware + Nodo has been leaked... http://tinyurl.com/3jmadr8
Do we need to access the broken download mode to flash this firmware?
I don't know if this will solve any of the known issues here but I think that carrier branded phones that might have problems when updating could find this useful (???)
Futher I have know idea if that does change your current bootloader versions...
For those who try out this firmware: please post some results here...
Try it for your own risk - I am not responsible for damage related to this post...
I hope that this will bring back some fun - at least for some of us... :)
@myan hey mate, read notes above quickly before you decide to flash.. its entirely up to you obviously but you may be harming your chance of support(?) in the future if any other little issues show up or if the firmware has any issues on your particular network. as long as you don't mind that go for it.
and yes you do need access to download mode.
@sirrusty yeah thanks for your statement... this seems to be very risky... but since I do not have a working download mode I can not use it anyway... :(
So please do it only if you are 100% sure about the risks as sirrusty said.
I would be so happy if I could provide any better help here sorry :(
Cheers, it's kind of a weird one for me, I've flashed stuff in the past... Its just here there is a real mix of casual phone users and more experienced folk and its a site run by MS who will stop unmoderated posts if things get out of hand.
Yeah I would suggest leaving stuff like this to XDA or similar sites...
I would flash my phone if I was 100% certain everything I have on the phone remained intact. But sadly, all flashing operations will wipe the target device clean.
When is 7392 expected to be released for the Samsung Focus on AT&T? I'm on 7390 (obtained through the official mechanism instead of hacks). I know it's simply a security fix for a few certificates, so I'm confused by why it hasn't shown up yet. I sync through Windows Phone Connector for Mac, if it makes a difference.
The 7392 release isn't on the 'where is my update' page, so I don't know how close or far away the update will be. It's a bit sad when a security update takes several weeks to be released -- what is going on?
I won't be flashing mine as I am carrier tied and have insurance through them so do not want to do anything that may invalidate it.
If I am left with no other option I will get it replaced under warranty/insurance through my carrier. At the end of the day if i get sent another device with problems i will just keep returning them until i get another good one!
@sirrusty I'm having the same problem as @florinr08 and @Zulhardy. I was stucked at step 6. Then install the Update tool without problems. Then tried again to update but still in a loop at step 6.
Regarding the focus updates are on hold due to Samsung using different memory in some phones.. Shouldn't be long now, its been known about for a while now. There's a bit in the top about it.
@sarasera I will speak to samsung about this over the weekend or monday when the people who know will be there... I don't have that problem myself but seem the only person who has got anywhere with them (from here anyway)... I don't know if thats just fluke or knowing how to deal with service centres. i'm sure they know about it by now and are working on a new fix.
@sarasera although please log a call with them yourself if you havent.. I know it can be frustrating when they won't listen but when enough people call the penny may drop.
I've Flashed my Omnia 7. Firmware: (I8700XXKC1_XXKB2)
Details:
Firmware version is now: 2424.11.3.1
Radio Software version : 2424.11.2.2
Bootloader: 5.3.0.4
Improvments:
1) The capacitive buttons are now disabled while an application/game is running (no longer accidentally exist an app/game while playing)
2) GSM and WiFi seem to be improved with this new radio software
3) Faster web content downloding
Victor, I'm looking at the ROM files now and I'm seeing 3 ROM files, bin(Phone Image), eb0(PDA Boot Image) and nb0(PDA Image). Is it possible to just flash the PDA boot Image to upgrade the bootloader but leave the rest alone?
Well after this evenings phone disasters I may just follow you! Frequent dropped calls after which all audio stops till reboot, trying to video sons playing.. Complete lockup needing reboot, audio dropouts playing music needing reboot.. If that's my reward for trying to keep offical then balls to the warranty! I was gonna just replace the bootloader but if theese issues don't pack their bags by tomorrow....
You can replace bootloader and radio without changing the os yes. Side effects unknown at this time. Read one report of worse signal.
@Zulhardy -----------Yes it is possible, leave the CSC blank. Radio (GSM & WiFi) Software and Bootloader will be updated. You do not lose any data.
Update!
imageshack.us/.../newbootloader.jpg
I've managed to update ONLY the bootloader shown here, I did not flash the firmware and my stuff is still intact. And the phone STILL cannot update pass step 6 and Samsung tool doesn't fix it. I'm convinced that it's the NODO update that's causing it now.
My phone specs are as shown.
OS Ver: 7.0.7390.0
Firmware HW Rev No: 2424.10.11.1
Hardware Rev No: 3.15.04
Radio Hardware Version: 0.0.0.800
Bootloader Version: 5.3.0.4
Chip SOC Ver: 0.36.2.0
@Zulhardy What is Available Storage on your device?
Victor. Phone shows 2.25GB free.
@Zulhardy
Does your PC have enough space for phone’s backups (you need at least 5GB of free space)?
If you have enough space on your PC, try to remove some of your files from the phone (my available storage on the phone is usually 4.5GB) then try to update the phone by ZUNE.
If the update stops in stage 6, backup your phone and then reset your phone (Hard Reset). Also you can flash your phone by the new firmware. The CSC file is missing, you can use your old CSC file from I8700XXJK1 package.
My PC has more definitely more than 5GB space and I managed to free my phone's space to 4.75GB by deleting all my games. It's still stuck at step 6 even after using the Samsung tool.
Thanks Victor for your help but I won't flash my firmware and lose everything.
I was never confident enough to flash ROMs back on my WM6.1 so I don't feel confident to do it on this with all the problems floating around.
Hopefuly someone from MS is going to respond here on monday.
@Zulhardy I know what you are thinking by susspecting nodo itself.. but don't forget its OK on most devices and the same problems you have were the ones supposed to be addressed in that samsung fix. my money is still on a slight hardare difference.. whether the nodo & 7392 update process could have been written to be more inclusive and hardware inspecific only Microsoft know at this time.
@Freypal you are right to be cautious, if something goes wrong while doing it you are one your own with no basis for complaint.
I've discovered Orange was probably less that honest to me about my replacement phone, when It was replaced before, as it was under 28 days old they promissed I would get a new one not a recon or return. Ive now discovered through a bit of poking round I believe I may have been sent a customer return in the box to make it look new and am suffering the problems they probably sent it back for... I'm so tempted to try and solve these problems with a flash.. my one reservation is some kind cheveron style anouncement like "we are rolling mango out now, customers who have previously changed their firmware may experience difficulties...etc,etc..." then again I could just buy a new phone if that happens I suppose. Insurance or self fix... its a dificult one.
What the hell? I can't get to download mode. I have 4.11.0.3 bootloader and JK1. What should I do? This whole update procedure is a complete MESS.
@sirrusty. It makes no sense to hold back the security update for the Samsung Focus where people already have the 7390 update and they are not affected by the flash memory problem.
It has been 19 days since the 7392 update was announced on May 3rd -- which is supposed to only be a fix with a few security updates. In fact, it's only supposed to revoke a few problematic certificates. If this is all the update is, why is it not released?
I'm not really too worried about the certificates and 7392 update... but what this says is that Microsoft has not fixed the updating process. I'm not optimistic that Mango will be improved.
@turtlebreath I agree fully.. its odd, I guess they know lots of people aint impressed and not to improve it and minimise the chance of this happening again would be suicide especialy among die hard early addopters who want to recomend it to friends but don't feel like they can at the moment... its a newish platform and relationships between manufacturers and MS are being explored, people fairly expect better next time. As michael says much much further up this thing... They know what is expected for mango. I believe them.
I'd love to se an article on the update process behind the scenes on this blog before mango comes out so we could understand the complexities and methods.
Oh yeah, that would be an interesting read!
Just rang up again. The guy who I spoke to again went off to ask about the problem and came back to me and asked me to describe the problem. He said he understood and gave me the address of a local Samsung service centre where they would re-flash it under warranty.
And then i've called my service centre who reckon a couple of days for them to flash it. I don't know whether to go down that route or warranty through my carrier :s
@Freypal well done mate... you have become the second person go get a fix offered.. I fixed mine myself in the end as my phone was awful reliabilty wise but didnt want to risk another from orange with other problems, at least all mine were software/firmware related.. have to say its spot on now.
Aaaaand Orange refuse to do anything about it. They say it's Microsoft's fault for distributing faulty software. Fantastic.
makes you wonder why some of us are loyal to certain brands and carriers don't it.
Did you buy your phone directly from Orange?
I received a Samsung Focus 1.4 for Mother's Day. Should I take it back to At&T and ask for a Rev 1.3? I don't mind waiting for the update, but I fear this delay will happen for each and every update.
@bgetreu I can't speak for them.. but I would have thought that now its on the Radar shouldnt be a problem in the future, they will know to make updates to accomodate both types.
@sirrusty does being given the address to a repair centre nearby count as being offered a fix? :P And also why did you flash yours again? Did you have the faulty bootloader? And if not, what did you flash it to/with (versions) and did that enable you to get the 7392 update? I'm not asking for procedural steps, just interested to know how far you mean that "it's spot on now"? :)
I got my phone on contract through Orange yes. I was pretty annoyed at their response. They were peddaling some rubbish about the update being nothing to do with Orange. When i pointed out that the update went through a carrier testing phase from Orange she said that they had nothing to do with it and it came staight from MS.
I did point out this wasn't true but it's like banging your head against a brick wall. They flat out refused to do anything about it. My only option then is to try and jig it myself or take it into this carphone warehouse centre and let them jig it.
I've been with Orange for years and this is the first bad experience i've had and it's seriously annoyed me.
@florinr08 I guess getting an address or phone number of the local service center counts... its more than most have been given! did they give you a call refference number too?
yes I did have the faulty bootloader, but more than that I found my phone to be unusable due to freezez and dropped calls, although the bluetooth worked great so i didnt want to get it swapped and their was no guarentee from orange that I wouldnt keep getting sent ones with the same problems... although orange had told me I would get a new replacement phone its firmware, radio etc were all quite early versions so I put the troubles down to that.
The straw that broke the cammels back was hearing that the capacitive buttons are disabled when playing games in new firmware (i often play phone games with my young kids and they were constantly quitting the games by hitting the buttons). I was fully aware things could have gone wrong but had just had enough of my phone freezing that day and was prepared to throw it in the bin had the worst happened.
I give the following info as info to compare, not an advert to go do it yourseves! as I said I was prepared to junk my phone and switch to a different model had it not worked.
obviously I never had nodo or 7392 before so i dont know what is down to that and what is down to firmware update but the phone is a lot more responsive now. i've lost the bootloader problem, calls are not dropped (although slightly quieter now, i know this can be fixed if needed in diagnostics mode), orange bloatware gone (except orange maps navigation.. i put that back) and everything on the phone still works (MMS, paying for apps via orange bill etc)
On a different note i've just found that my friend & manager at the service center I worked at many moons ago now works for Samsung!
@Freypal as the problem has been acknowledged with the bootloader here, the updates are official and its less than 12 months old technicaly don't the retailer have to deal with any issues by law? i'm not too hot on that kind of stuff but I thought that was standard.
by the way my resistors for my homemade JIG cost 48p from a maplins store. One 300k (could have just used that.. then it would have been 24p) but also added a 1K to get the resistance to the recommended 301K total.
@sirrusty they gave a reference number too, yes, but I actually got rid of it and didn't save the details a day or two ago. :/ If this goes on without any updates on the issue and I get confident enough to lose my texts, I will do the flash. I'm on Three btw.
I heard Steve is going to announce more than 500 nre features tommorw. @ERIC all of us here are really frustrated on the way you people handle the updates. How do u expect us to wait years for a small update?? each time you say we learned our lessons from our past experience. the fact is that you havent learn anything and you are making the people who support you at your initial stage even more frustrated.
please pass my message to steve that it is better he announce 1 new feature and provide the update on time
Any word yet on the Focus v1.4 updates? Or is the plan to roll them all into the Mango update for the Focus v1.4?
-waiting semi-patiently...
@sirrusty - I would have thought so. I'm going to call again as i was unhappy with what I was told and couldn't really escalate it whilst at work. The fact she told me the updates weren't approved by Orange was an out and out lie.
I dont think it matters if the updates were approved by anyone... if a manufacturer or software provider has an issue and its nowt to do with orange.. they still sold you the phone and as such have a responsibility as your first point of contact? thats how I read it.
@Freypal lets take another example... you buy a DVD player from tesco, someting the manufacturer says you should be able to do doesn't work... within the first year you take it back to tesco not the manufacturer?
Frankly getting a little tired from the lack of official response here. I'm just about ready to throw this piece of junk into the trash and go back to my tried and tested Nokia 2700 Classic..
My Omnia7 hangs on the reboot step. I tried running the Samsung tool, but when trying to boot into the "fix-mode" it also hangs there. Unfortunately this is a European phone and I'm located in the US, so I don't have an option of returning it :(
@Sirrusty - Yeh I guess that's true. I'm really not sure what to do now. I don't really want to have to drive all the way to a service centre and leave my phone there then have to drive back. When you jigged yours was it fairly simple? I see there is now a good guide on XDA for the Omnia 7. I'm guessing just being resistors over the usb port that there shouldn't be any danger of shorting something out and damaging the phone.
Did you just get it into download mode and then apply the samsung patch and go to 7392 or go ahead and flash completely new firmware?
Aaaaalllsoo.... Since Orange are supposed to be pushing the 7392 update today I'm not expecting it to work due to my bad bootloader however a couple of guys on XDA said they updated with 4.10.1.9 so i guess it's at least worth trying.
My question is if i try and install and it gets stuck in the reboot loop, what is the correct procedure to abort the update?
Disconnect the cable then pull the battery and reboot? Just pull the battery?
And will i need to recover it at all via zune or will the update just fail and when i reboot the phone it will be ok?
Thanks! lots of questions there!
It is May 24 now and where is the promised t-mobile Omnia 7 update?????
Samsung Omnia 7 ... T-Mobile UK ... today is the "next day" ... but still no update ... stuck on 7.0 (7004) ...
um... prehaps at least give them till some kind of human hour in the US...
@Freypal i've got a really busy day today so probably wont be on here much.. will be tuning into the Mango press conference though in the background. I can answer all your questions but may be easier to do via email as the reply may be too long for here.. My email address is sirrusty@hotmail.com but please give me at least a few letters of your email address here so I know the mail is from you.
@Sirrusty No worries hehe. I'll drop a mail - Mine is as per my logon here freypal @ hotmail.com
I appreciate the assistance!
@Freypal i've replied but it may go to your hotmail junk box... yours did.
still no updates today... its 24th May right? Would you mind to advise me when will the updates come?
Indeed; no update for me either (T-Mobile UK). I'm assuming (hoping?) it's just a timezone thing and they'll roll in as the West coast wakes up.
Omnia 7 uk orange, walshed and then fixed, no may update.
Same here, T-Mobile branded Omnia 7 (O2 Germany net), still no update available. Let's really hope it's a Time-zone issue
WHERE"S IS THE UPDATE MICROSOFT? IM EXTREMELY ANGRY WITH THIS RIDICULOUS SITUATION
Mines Tmobile from Germany too and no update
I just received it!!!!!!!!! Patience everyone. You will get it TODAY !
Yes... updates just appeared. As promised.
Good work all at MS fixing up the initial Omnia 7 problems.
Resistor jig worked for me. 301k Ohms. Download mode accessed and Samsung patch applied - Just awaiting the notification for 7392 update now.
thanks for heads up installing them now
Still no update for me on Orange :-( starting to get fed up now.
@mcoulter785: i know exactly how you feel. I had a feeling that us Orange users would still end up waiting
Installed 7008 downloading 7392.. Omnia 7 T-mobile CZ(Deutsche Telekom brand).. Thanks MS BUT next time early please :))
T mobile Omnia 7 UK got the updates now.
This is the last time I buy a Windows Phone. I have a T Mobile HU Omnia 7 and still stuck with 7004. No updates ever, no support, no one to speak to. Samsung blames Microsoft, Microsoft does not release timely updates, but when I remember paying 600 EUR for a mobile phone it feels like being cheated.
I am filing a complaint with Consumer Protection as I have been waiting for an update for the past 3 months and still nothing.
I am going back to Iphone, at least there I know that there is an update available for everyone and not for selected operators, selected handsets and so on... shame on both: Microsoft and Samsung. Not to speak about T-Mobile.
Your phone "SAMSUNG OMNIA7" is up to date.
Current Version: 07.00.07004.03
I love how my comments aren't being shown as quickly as I'd have liked, which only gives me the feeling that your moderating all the comments. Which probably leads to me now thinking, there are many more annoyed customers out there.
I think it's disgusting that we've waited three months for a flipping update, I can't imagine how long it'll take for the Mango update to get to us. It's absurd, STOP TALKING TO US LIKE WERE CHILDREN. & give us some answers. I find your company your lack of communication and your form of communication absolutely dispicable. Here's a news flash Microsoft, we pay you to sit on your back sides. For 500 pounds a handset, I atleast deserve a better form of communication. Venting my anger out on a simple wall post, I think you've lost many customers. 3 months for a bl**** update. FIX UP MICROSOFT FIX THE ***** UP.
Now I put my question forward, as you've promised on various occassions that we would get our update, this is the second week I've still not got an update. Where is the update? & DO NOT tell me to look at the link you've told everyone else to look at, you and me both know that's not correct for ****. I do hope we can come to some sort of arrangement, otherwise I'm returning this handset, and I'm going to advise all my 4500 FACEBOOK friends on how NOT to get a WINDOWS PHONE 7.
GOOD DAY.
To all of you WP7 owners –especially those with an HTC Arrive from Sprint, I finally got the 7392 update and installed it without any issues in about 20 minutes. I still feel sorry though for those of you who are still waiting for pre-NoDo and NoDo updates. I guess I am not going to get excited about Mango –and MS should feel the same way, until all and everyone finally have the latest updates on our phones.
To those having boot loop issues when attempting the 7392 update from 7390: according to this article support.microsoft.com/.../2530409 we should be able to get to the "Connect to PC" screen when holding the camera down button during boot-up. I can't get this to work on mine. Might this be the cause of the issue for the boot loop?
support.microsoft.com/.../en-uk solution for Samsung Omnia 7 reboot loop issue when updating phone from 7390 to 7392 in Windows Phone 7
@wlhj28 I have tried this multiple times since the tool's release with no difference...
Finally updated my Omnia 7 (on T-mobile HR). Just hope that for Mango we woudn't heve to wait so much time.
On Orange in the UK here, still on (7008). No update... so what now, wait for the next phase?
I'm another disgruntled Orange UK Omnia 7 user. I would be less disgruntled if someone could tell us when the NoDo update is coming our way, and perhaps why there is the delay now that the problem has been solved.
Please let us know - Eric's post of 17 May suggested that we would get it yesterday.
Thanks in advance, Tom
@wlhj28 been there, done that, but stil stuck in the reboot loop :(
Yaay, got the updates for my Omnia 7 UK t-mobile atlast. Thanks for keeping you word, Microsoft.
the method was suggested by Samsung when I spent 5 pounds called customer service.. For me its work.. If it cannot work, I have no idea what can do more.
www.samsung.com/.../supportPrdDetail.do choose software.. There is an update for the tool yesterday. Do you want to try it again?
@wljh28 yes it does seem like there was an update on the tool yesterday but hash checkers confirm that this is EXACTLY the same file! Who're they trying to fool?!
I love how no one from Microsoft hasn't been on to advise us on what's going in with the update for Samsung Omnia 7 Orange customers. Has anyone else got their NoDo update on Orange?
Its quite likely that Orange is adding some custom software to the update like ATnT's address book function. I know Tmobile update comes with a new firmware upgrade for the Omnia 7 that fixes accidental capacitive button touch when playing games or surfing web.
However this firmware upgrade did not make it to the rest of Omnia 7 users around the world.
Got my Omnia 7 unto download mode using a jig and used the Samgung tool, 7392 is now loaded BUT my bootloader is still 4.10.1.9, and the phone still won't go into download mode when booted with the magic buttons (vol up, camera and power). I guess I need to hang on to the jig,
Interesting note: on the first reconnectg after Jig / Samsung tool / 7392 Zune briefly showed the phone as being called GT-i7800, not Samsung Omnia 7. Then if corrected itself...
I purchased the Samsung Focus 2 weeks ago and was eager for the recent update that includes copy/paste. I have spent hours trying to figure out how to get this update. Is the update process completely random? I called ATT and they don't have answers. Considering returning. Does anyone have suggestions?
@cgcrunner Samsung focus updades are on hold I believe while a new update package/procedure is finalised to work with two different twpes of memory samsung used in the phones. Hope that helps.
Got my Samsung T-Mobile updated and ready. =)
But I have a problem with MMS. Since I have an unlocked T-Mobile Samsung phone I am unable to send an recieve MMS messages. Does anyone else have this problem and is there a solution?
Anyone an explanation for the fact that the WPSupportTool.exe does seem to connect and update my phone and the samsung tool does not. If the cause is the bootloader, cant the WPSupportTool fix this?
3 hours after i wrote this: spontaneously there are updates available when i connect my phone to my pc.
smooth update in 15 minutes.
@sirrusty ... thanks for the response and update.
