Dell just announced the brand-new XPS 15z. It’s the thinnest 15” PC in the world. Ever.
Even though its crazy thin (under 25mm), the XPS 15z is a powerhouse; you can get one with up to a second-gen Core i7 processor, a backlit keyboard, high-end NVIDIA GPUs, Intel WiDi 2.0 and a new full HD display that Dell says is up to 50% brighter than standard displays. And it gets up to 8 hours of battery life.
Dell hooked me up with a preview of the XPS 15z a few days ago, and while I didn’t get a chance to really test performance or battery life, I did get to explore the new design. It’s an interesting evolution of the chassis that Dell uses on its Inspiron and XPS lines, but it works; the centralized hinge is elegant and smooth, and the profile is beveled in such a way that it appears even thinner than it actually is, which is saying something given that it’s already the thinnest 15” PC on the market! The entire body is made from brushed aluminum, even the undercarriage, which makes the XPS 15z feel sturdy and solid. The case is hefty at about 5.5lbs, but it’s well balanced and distributed.
Overall, the XPS 15z is a nice PC that looks great and pushes the boundaries for what we thought was possible design-wise for a laptop of this size. You can get yours starting today from Dell.com.
Damn... I was really hoping for a numeric keypad =| I'm itching to by a 15" for school this fall... so far the only Dell that seems to fit my needs is the Latitude 6520. I really wish it had a gaming GPU option, though... I don't need Quadro graphics.
How is it the world's thinnest 15 inch PC when Apple's 15 in MacBook Pro is 0.02 inches thinner?
@Rosyna.. a Mac isn't a PC in this case.. btw.. this thing totally looks like a mac pro.. I'm not a fan of the design.. and somebody please tell these people that whoever came up with the glossy screen idea on a laptop is a complete tool.
@GBK: Glossy screens are great for movies and video. I personally prefer a matte screen for my work PCs though.
@GBK, actually the previous Adamo line and this XPS 15z is "inspired" directly by the 15 inch MacBook Pro. To do that and then claim it is thinner than the MBP when it is, in fact, 0.02 inches thicker seems… odd.
My main issue with it is the glossy screen the weird keyboard.. maybe it feels better for typing on than it looks..
I'm sure Dell will do just fine with it.. I'm not gonna get all upset over the 0.02" that could just be 'tempeature' effect the the caliper tool :)
@Ben Rudolph . i wish there'd give us a choice when you config the thing.. I prefer a versatile matte screen laptop rather than something that is pretty much unusable in a bright room :) At least you can get decent resolution (1920x1080) on it.. unlike so many other laptops.
Since when is a Mac not a PC? PC still means 'Personal Computer' doesn't it?
Forget the 'I'm a PC' marketing campaign from Microsoft, that is just designed to make people associate 'PC' with Windows. This machine can run Linux too and it's still a PC.
@Tommyinoz not according to apple.. otherwise the Mac vs PC ads they ran for years were just arguments between apples and well i guess apples :)
Believe me 1080p on a 15 inch screen does no one favors... I have 1080p on my HP Envy and at standard 96 dpi the text is almost unreadable. It is definitely an eye strain. So the solution oems have is bump dpi up and that makes all the icons blurry and nasty. Horrible idea.

back in 2003 I had a dell with 1920x1200 on a 15" and ever since then i'm been stuck with inferior glossy low res low dpi displays.. Back then I ran it at 96dpi just with zero issues would have ran it at 120 dpi but XP is such a horrible OS that it was utterly unwatchable.. now with Win 7 and high dpi everything works and looks hundreds of times better.
