If you haven’t noticed, I blog. A lot. I know a lot of you do too, and like me, you’re always trying to make your blog look its best. For me, there’s no easier way to do that than using Windows Live EssentialsIt’s a standard software load on all of my many PCs, and I use it all day, every day to manage my photos and videos, and the posts that in which I’m using them.
My main weapon of choice is Windows Live Writer, which I use to compose and post all of my posts. Why Live Writer (Microsoft connection aside, of course)? Unfortunately, with most blogging sites like WordPress, BloggerLiveJournal you need to have an online connection while you blog or you have to create the content offline in a separate program and then reformat once you’re ready to post. Sometimes I find the inspiration to write but don’t have easy access to an online connection, like when I stole my mother-in-law’s HP G62 for a review.
Windows Live Writer is different. Not only is it a free desktop application, but it offers the ability to work fully-functional offline so you can write whenever the mood strikes you. Like right now, when I’m writing offline because the stupid wireless network in the Hilton isn’t working.
Aside from working offline, it’s super-familiar to use and looks and feels a lot like Word With Live Writer, you can edit offline with inline spell checking, and easily insert, resize and format individual photos and videos, or entire photos albums, and have them automatically published with the blog entry. The best part is that you can complete all of these tasks while seeing exactly what your blog posts will look like before you publish it! Windows Live Writer is compatible with the top blogging platforms and allows for quick preview before posting which is very handy for gut-checking a post before hitting “publish.”
I always try to include as much rich content (nerd for “photos and videos”) as possible to spice things up. For that, I use Windows Live Photo Galleryand Windows Live Movie Maker which are closely integrated into the Writer experience. The new versions of these apps, which are currently in beta, have a pile of new features that make working photos and videos a breeze. For example, I use the new “retouch” feature all the time, because it lets me edit out scratches in the PCs I review. Careless co-worked smashed up that shiny new gaming rig? No problem! I just highlight the damaged section hit the “retouch” button, and voila – the PC looks like it came right out of the box.
And of course, you’ve probably already read about Photo Fuse and how it can seamlessly blend multiple photos into one perfect shot. For example, using Photo Fuse I turned these:
This looks like we shot it at one time, but we actually blended it together from three different shots. It’s basically a pro-grade editing feature for free: BTW, we shot this for a soon-to-be-disclosed ULTRA MEGA AWESOME event that we’re doing. Stay tuned on that for more…
For videos, I love how easy it is to edit a movie in Windows Live Movie Maker. I use this for a lot of my short shoot-‘em-in-my-office videos of PCs, and it gives me all that I need to make an otherwise mediocre video look professional. For example, the video Ash and I shot of Windows Live Sync was edited completely in Moviemaker:
There’s a lot more inside all of these programs than I can cover here, so I highly recommend that you go get the beta right now and try them out for yourself. And if you’re attending BlogHer make sure to sign up for the "Bring Your Blog To Life with Windows Live” session in our Windows suite (#4331).
Good luck and happy blogging!

Aweosme post Ben!
I don't leave comments often, for lack of time, but just wanted to say "Thanks" to everyone on the Windows Blog, esp. Ben, for keeping us updated on everything and making sure we get the most out of the Windows "Experience"
:) Thanks guys!

I by chance started using the windows live writer!
But soon i relaized, i do't need to go online always to write to my blogs, save drafts. I can see previews and much more.........I can manage all these activities on machine it self.
You will not believe now i post more entries on my blog using live writer :)
My most favourite feature is to add "my videos" from youtube and web. I also like creating instant photo ablum and publishing it as a part of my blog entry.
Definitely, will recommend this tool!
More pictures of the girl! ;-)
Oh my goodness thank you for sharing! I have used the movie maker. I don't realize when it was updated, but i'm glad it was because now i'm not having freezing problems nearly as bad as I was. Matter of fact only once. I am aware of the live writer, but never really used it. As a blogger also you've convinced me to give it a try. The photo fuse I hadn't heard of, but I can see this quickly becoming a favorite. I'm going to see if I can find it. ♥ it! Thanks for these reviews!
Tears of joy I think I found it....i'll know shortly. Download in progress (explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-beta)
Thanks for the post, Ben!
I'm always looking forward to use the last software and betas and I must say that I love how the Windows Live Essentials Beta works... But I could not test Writer a lot as I have no blog I want to use yet.
I would use the Windows Live Space I have if I could find a way to integrate it to a personal website I'm developing in ASP.NET 4. The point is that I would really like to have my blog on my website, but having it connected to my Windows Live ID and friends.
Is there any suggestion for me, so I can find a bloggin' system to integrate on my website, and which I could share through Windows Live and post within Writer? What I'm doing right now is trying to develop my own bloggin' system within my site, but I'm sure there must be a solution for me somewhere in the wild.
@Bruno, head over to the Windows Live Developers blog...they've got all kinds of stuff on implementing Windows Live into websites, apps, etc. windowsteamblog.com/.../developer
I had the opportunity to me you and other members of the Windows team at BlogHer10 and got instruction on the Win Live Essentials Beta. All I could think of was how I couldn't wait to get home to use. After being on the road all day I sat awake till almost 2am playing with Live Writer, photo gallery and movie maker. You people just made blogging 1000 % easier and a lot more fun!
Ben and all the other Windows Team Bloggers,
Thanks for all your insightful and useful information you provide on the various blogs. Your dedication to keeping the global Windows user community informed is just (And important) way Microsoft absolutely trumps Apple in pre and post-sale support and community interaction. Your community engagement, interaction and of course this very well put together blog network really justify how not only Windows 7 is the best operating system Microsoft has ever created, but also probably the best supported operating system Microsoft has ever created.
You are a real credit to Microsoft, and I hope one of your executives comes across this post when they check up on what you've been doing :)
Live Writer is a great program, but it's missing a few things that keep me from using it: 1. Better Live Journal support. It may not be as popular as it once was, but LJ is still the father of the modern blogosphere. Live Writer needs to support LJ tags natively (as in actual tags, not the word "Tags" followed by links posted in the journal post) and moods. 2. Myspace support. It doesn't support LJ at all. 3. Support for site-specific things, such as "what I'm reading" or "what I'm listening to" that some blogs support. For now, I'm just composing in Word, and then copy-and-pasting into my blogs.
Windows Live Writer is a fantastic offline blogging tool with a WYSIWYG editor. It interfaces with just about any blog service [Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, WordPress, etc.] If you're a blogger you'll find this tool incredibly helpful- and it's free from Microsoft.
Not to forget about the plug-ins!!

I hope you have a nice day!
