Microsoft takes our commitment to the environment seriously. We’re continually working to reduce the impact of both our operations and our products on our planet. In 2008, we set a company goal to reduce our carbon emissions per unit of revenue by at least 30% by 2012. Steps we’ll take to achieve this include improving energy efficiency in our buildings and operations, reducing air travel and increasing our use of renewable energies like solar and hydropower. However, we believe we can have the greatest impact by helping our 1 billion customers become more energy efficient.
Energy efficiency was a guiding principle in the design of Windows 7. With Windows 7, we’ve made it easy for you to reduce your power use, save money and conserve battery life. Take a look at this guide and optimize your PC today.
For IT Pros, it’s easier than ever to manage power use in their business. For example, they can now deploy power management policies to automatically power off displays or put machines to sleep after a period of inactivity. Other power management features of Windows 7 include Idle Power Management, Active Power Management, new diagnostics and improved remote management.
We’ve also taken measures to reduce waste in our product packaging. If you go into a store and pick up a copy of Windows 7, the package you’re holding is 37% lighter than a Windows Vista package. This and other improvements, including different types of material and more environmentally-friendly ink, saw the Windows 7 package’s econometrics score jump by more than 50% over its Windows Vista counterpart.
Round 3 of the Windows Recession Sweepstakes is now open! Until 8:00am tomorrow (July 21), leave a comment and let us know if you’d like to hear more from us at the Windows Experience Blog about environmental issues and how you can use technology to do your part to help out the planet.
Remember to follow me, Brandon, Ben and the Windows Blog on Twitter to find out more and hear about future rounds of the sweepstakes. If you’re interested in Green IT issues, also don’t forget to follow Microsoft_Green to stay up to speed on Microsoft’s work.
Because the contest has been so popular, we’ve extended it until August 31. There will still only be ten contests total (this is the third). Full Terms & Conditions of the sweepstakes are here.
Good luck!
Of course we ALL would like to hear more about how to use technology to help out our planet Earth! Captain Planet would thank you also! =)
Yes I'd love to hear more, while I have concern for the environment I also love anything that lets me lower overall engery costs. That way not only does the planet win but so does my budget.
@rakul_nitescar
While I'm not generally into the whole "green" thing, I would be interested in hearing about ways to reduce energy usage, and how emerging technologies would make that an easier goal to reach!
@CaneDrew
The good thing to come out of the BP disaster is that people have become more aware of environmental issues. I think the blog should try to get more people to shut down their computers when they're away, or at the very least set them to stand-by. How about a short tutorial on how to set the computer to shut down / stand-by automatically after 15 minutes of inactivity?
@noroom2
I'm curious to hear you ideas! I always love seeing new stories on the news about people using technology or just coming up with fantastic new ideas to help the environment with our modern skills :)
Twitter: @keklar
yes, its always good to hear the issues which could help understand that we can and show make an effort to help the planet earth.
well, with technology growing so fast, which i love, we can do all sort of stuff today. i think i could use energy saving gadgets, and always keep it up-to-date as new technology is aiming to use less energy, be more reliable. just like buy a car which more economical and with less CO2 emissions, these are just some of the way we can help our planet with technology...
thanks
vander_09@hotmail.co.uk
Yes, absolutely, Technology companies looking to do something other than filling up landfills is very important.
I'm not as interested in this topic, but I'll read anything you guys post. This site is great. :)
@MasterDevwi
Reducing energy usage - yes
Going "green" - no
Not that I don't care for the environment, but I don't like to mix my tech news with environmental stuff. I rather hear the environmental stuff on my environmental RSS subscriptions (leave tech with tech).
@luischinea
Most definitely would like to know about tech-related environmental issues from the Windows Experience Blog.
As for doing our bit to help the planet, I think reducing energy consumption and packaging like you've done is a great way to start. I saw the article on this very blog (back when I hadn't yet hit the "Join" link in the top right corner) in June or July of last year regarding how you've cut down on packaging and made the Windows 7 retail box look simple yet attractive at the same time.
I also love the fact that you guys have included the ability to generate an "energy report" (in a matter of speaking) using the powercfg /energy option. I do it a lot on Windows 7 and I can see how the power I'm using is certainly more when I leave apps running on my PC. That does make me want to shut it down or hibernate the machine when I'm not using it.
And when it comes to playing our part in using tech to help the planet, I guess a simple way is to think about whether we really need all that power hungry hardware and graphics cards and such, and atleast consider some green thoughts before deciding on a system configuration.
@grajasekar on twitter.
Good luck everyone.
I'd prefer to have green efforts/issues a separate blog where I could read up if I so desired, but not necessarily have it piped in via the same channel as this.
@theprawn
The only people who would not like to receive information about how to help the planet would be BP executives, of which I am not, so count me in for more info.
I would like to see more or hear more about Microsoft Hohm other than what's mentioned www.microsoft.com/.../hohm.aspx being able to see examples of it and other green Microsoft technology in action.
I'm all about saving "green"
@CO_GG
I'm afraid I really subscribe to this blog's RSS feed to hear about the OS itself rather than the environment. Though some of the bits in this post are interesting and I wouldn't mind hearing more from time to time I guess. Just don't overdo it or you'll end up making the blog background color black trying to save electricity on users' computers. ;)
@mzzt
Yes, more stuff on being greener would be good.
@MarP1980
I would love to hear more as well, from both a software perspective (as noted) but also from a perspective of hardware manufacturers also being interested in using more green-friendly processes and materials. I know that is not always within Microsoft's hands, but have you all begun taking steps to discuss such facets with manufacturers?
@Cosmosis
@Darth_Icarus (because I'm not good at following directions)
Sure, would love to hear more energy savings tips from a tech perspective.
@dewh70
Yes I want some quality articles which can educate me to help make world a better place to live in.
@Shishant
Sure I'd want to know. I make it a point to unplug all my gaming systems and TVs when I'm not playing them.
@thundR51
I'd love to hear more about environmental issues and ways to be green with technology.
Twitter: Rickcon
I would be interested in hearing about ways to reduce energy usage and how one could utilize emerging technologies to do so.
@_KYA
Nope, don't care one bit about going green. You can keep those posts out of the blog.
Thanks.
Of course we need to hear more about saving energy.
@m_rosenberg
I think everyone would say we need to take better care of the planet especially after the BP disaster in the Gulf. Going "green" is an easy way to help save the planet - it takes very little effort & can actually save you money.
Twitter: @ilRadd
Yes! Especially the issue of maintaining a high-powered rig (or any powerful tech, really) without negligent use of irresponsible amounts of energy.
Glad you linked to the guide. As a power professional, I'd be very interested to hear what consumers can do to lower power consumption. @aaronmash
If it is tech related sure! @peaceful
It's interesting how companies can do simple things like power management policies and significantly reduce their energy usage.
@duditz
After spending some time with Microsoft's Hohm service, I'd be interested to learn more about ways to reduce my family's energy consumption.
@ekaschyk
lets hear more!
Yes, I'd like to hear more about environmental issues and how technology can be used for these purposes here. I'm @alee67 on Twitter.
Please focus on technology :-)
@georgeqi
I do like hearing about how technology can benefit the environment, its neat to see the advancements that better mother Earth!
@jordanfritzsche
I would like to learn more. In particular, I'd like to know if Windows 7 power management is smart enough to recognize that a background process (like an antivirus scan or third-party backup) is running and to not put the computer to sleep until after the process completes? @DeveloperInfra
I think it is great that you are taking practical measures to make changes in your operations that will help reduce the negative effects on the Earth. Thank you for continually striving for improvment in your products and practices.
@AdamWisden
I've seen some others mention a separate blog for this type of stuff and I would concur.
@JayKimble
As someone who leaves on his desktop PC and laptop on over night, I'd like to know more about energy efficiency and usage in regards to computer technology.
@Asrialys
Yes - Green is good. @rimtorch
I an interested in any way I can help the planet for now and the future. @markm0828
I'd like to hear more about green tech, although it may be more to do with reducing my power bill than saving the environment.
I'd like to hear the latter part on how you can use technology to do our part to save the planet. Thanks!
@apham79
Yes I would like to hear more. But I would like to keep it practical. Of course we would all save energy if we stopped using our electronics, but that isn't going to happen.
deiler at hotmail dot com
I would like to hear more about the computers consumption compared with other electronics.
I'd love to hear more, our kids will inherit this planet when we are gone so we need to preserve it as much as possible. Ult1040@gmail.com
More about recycling computers and cell phones @Bill_Curtis_42 at twitter
I'm up for topics on keeping systems cooler and performing better. If going green helps in those aspects then I'd say go for it!
I want to hear more about how I can use tech to help the planet!
Yes I would love to read more on your blog about environmental issues and ways to reduce waste. @Mr_Je11yman
I'd like to hear your take on the modern "paperless" office. It seems we missed the target pretty badly there. What can we do to get back where we were trying to go?
@melgrubb
Sure, I'd like to hear more about energy efficiency. How about something about Windows 7 home automation apps? @mrdrmuffin
yes it would be awesome to know how to reduce power consumption to both save battery power and electricity. my dell battery is on its last cells, and only lasts 20 minutes at best,
@APAzero7
Glad to see Microsoft reducing waste. The new features in Win7 have helped me not only reduce electricity but with Active Power Mgmt the battery-life in my notebook is even better! I'd love to hear what other steps and tweaks I could do to adjust my power usage.
@georgebabey
I think that saving energy is not as interesting as some other things that I would like to see on this site. A separate blog for "green" issues would be good.
I've done a few things to improve energy efficiency such as replace all my incandescent ligh bulbs with CFL's and upgrading the air contitioning unit in my home office to a Energy Star compliant model. But, if there is more that technology can help me do, let's hear it.
email: @w3zj.com
I would like to hear more of these enviromental issues. As an IT admin for a non profit here in the San Diego area, we are always looking for ways to be more eco friendly.
Yeah of course. I know the Company I work for is making strides as well towards the green.
Yes information on environmental green efforts would be appreciated.
Crap forgot my twitter.... so yes @my_leisure
Green is Good.
More about build-in power management, and how to tweak the settings, would be good.
As a graduate student who is concerned about the environment yet constantly using technology/electricity/power for research, I would love to hear more about Green IT issues and how I can better treat the planet!! @NYCityMuse
Since I care about both technology & the planet I'm open to hearing ways to use one to help the other.
@Tia_Stef
Absolutely!
I realize that I am in a small minority on this, but I feel that nuclear power can be some of the cleanest, most efficient energy that there is. For example, here in Chicago, we get a yearly letter from the energy company lying out the statistics for energy use. 32% of supplied electricity was done through coal-fired power, which resulted in 703.19 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions. 62% of supplied electricity was through nuclear power, which resulted in .006 lbs of high-level nuclear waste.
@candlesayshi
oops, forgot my twitter, not trying to enter twice: @realmiket
I would love to hear any ideas to help reduce energy costs. May I suggest you stop shipping actual physical discs for Windows and Office and provide download access for any future upgrades / purchases? Or at the very least provide a simple thin recycled container that you see a lot of physical CDs in. The large plastic box is quite unnecessary and a lot of other large software vendors have already moved in this direction (Autodesk for example).
@Chadwick17
I'm not a treehugger by any means, but reduction in waste (be it energy or otherwise) is always a good topic for discussion. I'd love to see some info along those lines.
@riceboyler
Lowering my power bill yes
Yes I would like to hear more about current and emerging technologies can be used to reduce energy usage.
I especially want to hear how software can be used to reduce energy usage and extend the life of my system.
@mottmike
I would definitely like to hear more about environmental issues and how technology can be used to improve the environment.
We only have one Earth, we need to do our best to keep it in good condition!
@Det_Conan_Kudo
I am all about cost savings. Green is nice.. but cheaper always wins in my mind. So how green is cheaper would be an excellent article.
@barryschuler
People are too overly concerned about "going green" so to speak. Our carbon footprint is not as large as people make it out to be. Its just a way to generate revenue, cooked up by the wealthy behind closed doors. I leave my computer on 24/7, however I have my monitors turn off and such and try to not use energy (like leaving all the lights on in the house when they arent in use) when I can
@shiarua
Sure, but only if it's somehow related to Windows.
Environmental impact of microsoft products
secretplace36@hotmail.com
Yes, definitely, I would very much like to hear more about how I can use technology to help make a better environment. Because if we have all these environmental issues, what else will save us from total destruction? :P Only technology of course! Please fill me in!
@eric1018
I'd absolutely love to hear more. This is sort of a no-brainer, really... even if I can't do much immediately, knowing what will work can help planning a roadmap.
Yes, it would be nice to see some Microsoft Research project work in this arena. There was a demo of independent wireless sensors a while ago at one of the MS Research events, never really saw any follow up.
@kurt711
Dudes heck yeah! Go planet earth. Captain Planet!
I'm unemployed and my energy bill is too high!
@nihilmatters
Software engineering yes, social engineering no. I work for a company who have joined the "people won't like us if we don't flaunt green." Many customers comment about how they don't enjoy the subtle message of, "if you don't buy from us, you're a planet hater."
Love my Windows, can't wait for the Win 7 phone and listen to my Zune every day. Please do what you individually and corporately need to do to be good earth stewards, but don't broadcast it for public kudos; the adage about tooting your own horn applies. @pecanpralines
As this is primarily a blog about Windows, it should concentrate on Windows. However, as environmental and green issues are important, perhaps a 'Green Tip' could be included at the bottom of occasional posts with a link to a dedicated 'Green' blog.
Besides saving the planet, being green also has the convenient side effect of helping save money on my energy bill. So of course I'd like to hear more about green topics on the blog! One tip I use often is plugging my equipment that doesn't necessarily need "sleep" mode into a surge protector, and then using the switch to turn them all off completely when I'm not using them. @pistonhjr
I'm a little interested, but really want to know more about using the technology to get our jobs done. Now if it comes in with some real cost/savings analysis I may pay attention, but in general, I want more focus on technology over "green" issues. For example, it's great to know that MS has redesigned packaging to be smaller and a little better, but I wouldn't want a whole blog post about that. Mention it in passing, but that's about it.
Now tips on how we can do this with our servers, that might be useful. But it really has to contain some form of cost analysis. If I spend 4 weeks to gain maybe $200/year, that's not a great ROI. However, if I can spend one week to get that and it continues over several years, that may be worthwhile.
I might be interested in something that discusses the tradeoffs in various power schemes. (I'd also love to see the "prompt me" option come back for the power button.)
Would like to know more about Windows-compatible energy saving hardware. @DirtJeans
Sure. I'm already aware of and make use of existing power saving capabilities of my computers and have read article after article for ideas for my house, car, etc. However if there's anything new or off the wall, then that would be great to hear about.
theotherbuzzy (at) live.com
I'm pretty big on being and staying green, so I'd love to see more posts like this.
Jacob Gross
@jacobmgross
I'd love to know more about the environment and how we (as nerds) can integrate modern technology to help clean up some of the messes left by previous generations, and how we can improve power efficiency in simple ways.
I like that Windows 7 has customizable power-saving options that are easy to alter.
sure
@cyric
I'd like to know how Microsoft is planning to allow for applications such as Windows Media Center that need to be able to record or download on a schedule run while the computer is in hibernation. My TV comptuer has to stay on all the time to be able to record TV shows, and I'd like to change that.
alexchristensen@mac.com
Of course! The worlds resources will not last forever and we need to continue to explore new ways to exploit renewable resources, I'd love to hear more information!
Let me know of some ways I can recycle my old PC and electronics!
Absolutely, yes talk more about some how saving the environment. Its nice to know you've reduced the packaging, should of done this long time ago but its done now and its all that matters. To help out my part of the planet, my laptop has a power saver feature which wont use the battery that much thus not using alot of electricity, I can also dim out the laptop screen too... so yeah saving electricity is not only good for me but the planet as well. Another thing i could do is when this laptop dies out i will defiantly take it to the E-Waste and not like some people do which they throw it on the garbage which is not the proper was to dispose of a laptop.
@YellowKidd7
Email: Lemuel_bac@yahoo.com
Yes, new ideas for taking care of the environment are always welcome.
@mvdavid7
Really who wouldn't want to hear more about sustainability and lowering our carbon footprint as a species and as individuals. @acampy
In an effort to save money, I'd like to hear more about reducing energy use.
@bdewong
Of course there should be more "green" discussion; it saves us all money, energy, and our planet.
@imalbert
Perhaps a small weekly column would suffice. You could even linkback to www.takepart.com as they often have articles regarding environmental awareness, as well as other issues (they're @TakePart on twitter).
I'm @darius_roberti on twitter.
Windows 7 is the best OS i have ever seen. Microsoft have came a long way in OS development.
@karthike
@jesgear
I would love to hear more from you about environmental issues and how we can use technology to do our part to help the environment.
I think we would all like to do our part to reduce out carbon footprint. However, we rely on our governments and industry to make it easy for us. Only green infrastructure will make it a natural way of being. So show us the money, Microsoft!
Talking about environmental issues would greatly benefit those who don't know what they can do to save energy and other precious resources, so it doesn't hurt to talk about those, and many would greatly appreciate it. I know I don't know all the ways to save energy and play my part, so any advice is always appreciated! Feel free to talk about saving the planet anytime!
Twitter : @ashrua
Of course. Being a father of 2 young kids I hope wwe can improve this planet for them and not ruin it!!
Orf course with 2 daughter I want to leave them a nice planet not a ruined one
@maglore1968
Learnign about innovative new green tech and ways to conserve resourses is always welcome information!
@jortega41
I would love to hear if Microsoft is using Bloom boxes, I know Google is testing them out as well as some other companies.
icuponq2[atsign]hotmail[period]com
Definitely keep writing about your environmental efforts, I'd love to see whats the next big step for Windows is. As for my part, I help the planet by using technology/computers for all my reading material. I think it isn't a bad thing that print media is being phased out; it was too much of a strain on the environment.
technology is awesome, it would be more awesome if it could fix environmental issues.
burkholder.1986@gmail.com
More interested in how we can use technology to reduce energy use. @BillB4
Yes, I enjoy learning about ways to reduce energy usage. I think the best and most interesting way to approach the topic is through a cost perspective. How much money can I save by doing X? What are the worst culprits of energy consumption?
mike@farinha.us
Yes, please tell me how can i help the environment using tech.
Anything that can help save money and the planted is a win win, lets see some more.
@thadeousC
renewable energy is great! i work for a copmany that builds control systems for Windfarms, but the whole green thing to me is BS. i just want to save money! @heathmcse on twitter
I'd be interested in a tool to asses PC energy consumption and compare between PC models and configurations.
Thomas.Bezak (at) live.com
I require actual amounts saved. Percent imparts little meaning to environmental effectiveness. ie:cost per unit saved.
I'm fine with leaving the green out of the tech news. There are plenty of resources to go to for "green" news and sorry, but I've got enough of that in the last few years. If it's news about how to make money by using the word "green" and people's naivete, then sure...
greator1 at hotmail dot com
Of course, you give me valid ROI that will allow my company to say "we're "GREEN"" and I'd probably take a gander.
Twitter: @greeneyebob
Absolutely, in our tough economic times IT needs to lead the way in cuting cost and doing things cheaper, cleaner, and more ecologically sound. Please help us to do that.
I feel that it is important to inform the public about how your corporation is trying the help the environment. Naturally telling others how they can help is a must.
Yes, please do. The environment affects all of us. A company the size of Microsoft has the potential to really make the world a better place to live in.
@BradfordJ
I would definately like to hear more about how we Windows users can help save the environment and our wallets. =)
Love reading your articles. Keeps me up to date on all new technology and where it applies to my field. Keep up the communication
Although I loved the Vista's package more than of 7's, it certainly wasn't environment-friendly. It is always great to read environmental issues and how we can help, so yes, please continue a moderate environmental advices :)
@astroX
I'd like to hear about how the power settings have chnaged over the last years or it power consumption is still the same basic scheme it's always been (turn off monitor, turn off hard drives, etc.)
@tsrblke
I'm all for reduced energy usage, but the "going green" (even though I'm sure it isn't meant to be) sounds like PR.
I love learning more about how technology can help our environment. In the past it seems like new technology has only damaged out planet and it's nice learning about how it can help fix our mistakes. I say you should post more for sure.
@iwantarangelife
Sure, why not? :)
Twitter: @JBLenfestey

@rexchoi
Go Green-no
Save Green-yes
Any energy savings will help.
One of my favorite uses of technology to cut back on energy consumption is power friendly PC components. Much like the Nvidia "Green" cards and of course the power supply manufacturers such as Antec, and dont forget AMD and Intel! All of these manufacturers are trying to cut back on our footprint in the earth while still allowing us to do the things we love!
I'd would really like to hear more about environmental issues. Technology consumes an immense amount of power, and I think that people need to be educated on how they can limit their use of the power. I'd also like to hear how Microsoft is limiting its environmental impact. I find the news of the smaller OS boxes interesting. Back in the 90's, I noticed that software boxes were quite huge. All that was contained in the box was usually a software manual and the software media. Today, I'm excited to walk into a store (Staples, BestBuy, etc) and see smaller software boxes on the shelves.
It would be nice if Windows didn't constantly access the HD - I set it to sleep, and it rarely ever does so.
Sorry, I forgot to leave my email:

I'd love to hear how Microsoft is reducing waste and their environmental footprint. I'd also love more tips on how we can help as users.
I think explaining some non-obvious things like how battery life can be extended (not runtime, but time until you have to buy a new one and dispose of the old one) and how the OS can give cues around that would be helpful. - @mikebaz
I always like to see a variety in posts. It changes things up a bit.
Please inform us of the enviromentally friendly options for IT support
forgot my @corwinamber in my previous post!!! LOL!!!
Who wouldn't??? I know that Thosiba's Eco Utility keeps my computer running at their perceived goodness of Eco friendly Windows running. I think that as we use more computers daily, we need to learn to SHUT OFF COMPUTERS. I can't tell you enough how many peoples' perceived notion of prolonging a PCs life is keeping it on all the time.
BKcomputerpad@live.com
i would like to hear more from you about environmental issues and how you can use technology to do your part to help out the planet.
My twitter name is LADY_PUG_LOVER
Anyone can agree that reducing your carbon footprint is never a bad thing. Reduced packaging and material also reduces cost and saves the Earth. We all know Mr. Gates is pushing to save the planet. Bravo MS save the Earth, hack the Planet.
I'd not only like to hear more about what we are able to do, but what we can tell clients that they can do to help as well.
Hearing more about the little things I can do to help contribute to this global cause would be awesome.
christopher.glover9@gmail.com
I would welcome articles or how-to's on cutting power consumption on my pc's running Windows. But other green articles for devices that go beyond the Windows OS (still Microsoft related) would be better served elsewhere. After years of disabling Sleep/Hibernation on my home devices I have left it enabled in Windows 7 and even configured it to suit my needs.
zeke009@hotmail.com
It would indeed be interesting to hear more about Microsoft's green initiatives.
More often than not, advances in the area go unrecognized (or misunderstood) by the general public. For example package changes for environmental concerns could be misconstrued as feeling like they were made cheaper to save money, when in reality there is a more noble purpose!
@ghaleon
Every once in a while, it should be ok to hear about the "green" and all the environmental issues. I would not like to see the issue approached often enough to become annoying.
I like the new Windows 7 package but I'd like to see a thinner retail plastic box or maybe a biodegradeable plastic box in the future. Keep up the good work and let us know more about Windows 7 and helping out the planet. twitter: patonyc

Sure. How does MS promote Green concepts but keep us on an OS/Hardware that requires we consume so much power and energy and leave a carbon footprint. Is there a future where we don't have a powerhouse PC under our desk, and maybe not even a laptop that consumes even that much power?
Sure, why not hear about it.
@amitairos
I'd love to hear more about Windows 8 power management when you can talk about it. Instant off and on will really help making PCs more green.
Without a doubt! Its important to see just what steps the general population take to stem back the apocolyptic holocaust being unleashed on a daily basis! I for my purposes have ceased all paper billing as much as I have been able...
I would like to see more on how to set the various power settings in Win7.
I'm not super enthusiastic about reading about green technology but if you blog about it that would make the information accessible to anyone who wants to read it. I'd be more curious about the behind the scenes work, upcoming features, etc. Battery life articles would be helpful.

Tell us more about the environment and how we can use windows to help! @faststinkface
I'm not as interested in hearing about the latest and greatest green technologies, mostly because they're often impractical and prohibitively expensive. But I do believe in smartly stewarding the resources that we have.

xzchinxzx@yahoo.com
I like learning how to save energy, but please, none of that green stuff.
I would like to see more things like folding@home but geared more towards the environment. I think using computers like that while they aren't really in use by the owner is really beneficial, although the power consumption might not be...
I would like to see a blog from the Microsoft hohm team! I am in the process of building a new home and would love to have devices that would support the hohm software and interface!
@WanderingHands
Would I? Would I? You bet I would!
tesreau@live.com
I was impressed with Win7's ability to put a normal desktop PC to sleep and it wake up. Something previous versions said they could do but didn't smoothly (or at all). So YES, tell us more!
I conserve energy by sitting on my rear as much as possible. :-)
Seriously, I'd be interested in seeing what products might be available for us to manager our home energy consumption right from our Windows 7 PCs; for example, programming thermostats, turning lights on and off automatically, and the like.
I would love to hear more, controlling the house to energy cost would be a great topic.
Yes I would like to hear more about environmental issues and how to use technology to help out our planet . It needs all the help we can give it.
Of course I would love to hear more. As an environmentalist, I also love to hear about how companies are reducing their carbon footprint.
megaultraryanmon@live.com
I'm all about taking care of this wonderful planet of ours in any and every way possible. Where would we be without it?
Of course! I would like to hear about everything happening at Microsoft. Energy is a great way to boost sales. Have you noticed that the new Office 2010 licence keys now come on a card instead of CD's in a box. Great!
Twitter ID: @keverdy13
Yes. I would like to hear more about environmental issues, but more importantly I would like to know about the work thats being done to optimize the OS to be more efficient and how we can get longer battery life on our mobile devices.
I would like to know more about how we can use technology to help our planet. Tech has help us harm it for to long, now it is time to repair what we have done. @kt970
We need a whole lot of energy savers, keep up the good work Windows!!
Environment-Friendly. The greenest Windows ever.
The best way to use technology to help out planet Earth is to TURN IT OFF!!!
computers and internet have lead to wireless billing and wireless bill pay... wireless alerts from your bank for alerts about your account. Less paper usage!
Green is good, bring it on!
I'd like to hear about options to improve power management and consumption. Please keep sharing.
@gsyoungblood
I'd like to hear more on what Microsoft and it's business partners are doing to reduce our e-waste. My point being the impact Moore's law has had on our environment. 30 years ago most people kept there phones, TVs, and even stereos for much longer then we do today.
In today's world if we don't have the latest PC with upgraded graphic cards, processing power, RAM etc or the latest phone we are left in the dust unable to communicate with those who have upgraded. This precipitates our need to purchase new products and throw away our old PC's and gadgets (or recycle). These devices contain lead and other not so eco-friendly materials.
Case in point how many PC's and cell phones have each of you gone through in the past 10 years compared to 20 years ago?
So what really interests me is what are you all doing to address this?
Just looking at my closet full of old unused electronics makes me feel guilty. So if I win save yourself a disk at let me download the software! But please send the actual Zune HD :)
@JosiahMelendez
I know I would. I actually wish I knew how much power my computer was consuming.....I wonder if there is a widget for that!
I would like to hear more about green tech issues. I built my home server with Western Digital Green hard drives and a low power CPU. Every little bit helps.
Been tracking my energy use through the PG&E Smartmeter program.
Also Downgraded to low-power systems to use less electricity. That and sleep/hibernation have lowered my bill $100 a month.
Not only do we need to hear more about how Windows is helping to save energy, we need to be hearing more about how Microsoft products are being manufactured in an environmentally-conscious and human rights-conscious way. Hopefully new cloud technologies will make the industry's strain on natural resources a little lighter.
@VarvidVideo
I'd love to hear more discussion of recycling and repurposing efforts!
Maybe implementing renewable energy in manufacturing, too.
Yes, I think a lot of people here would like to hear about what you/Microsoft/Windows had to say about this enviromental "crisis" and situation that is plaguing our planet because your company is such a fundamental part of the world and energy and how it moves , it's the little things that matter and if you can distribute something energy efficient from the top maybe it can trickle down to the bottom and affect the whole hierarchy that is the world .
@abouttandoutt
I would love to hear more from the Windows Experience Blog about environmental issues and how you can use technology to do your part to help out the planet!
Forgot to include my Twitter handle with the blog post, it's @techinitiatives (Rich Schumacher).
Yes, Id like to hear more from you about environmental issues and how I can use technology to help out the planet.
@omarali
I don't see a reason to blog about going "green". It's nice to know that we are saving energy with new low power state options but who really sits down and looks at the numbers whether they're saving or not? I know my company don't. Other companies that I worked for in the past don't. It's more of a marketing campaign in my opinion when you see how a new blade server can save you 60% on energy cost. That only makes the manufacture look good because they are selling it. It's always good to save on energy cost but either way, we are going to buy it because we need it.
@shanfont
Yeah! I would love to hear more about enviromental issues. Its a great topic to discuss.
@trhodes93
trhodes93@live.com
Yes, I'd like to hear more - Windows 7, by using fewer system resources, makes it easier for me to have multiple windows open during a meeting. That means I'm using "soft copies" of papers instead of printing out a lot of wasted paper.
Though I'm not huge into the whole "green" thing, I do think it is important that everyone does their part to keep our home clean. And clean technology is always a good idea!
@superlinkx
Yea!
You could always slow down the CPU to just above sleep mode when the computer is idle.
@eliranek
Interested in innovative ways to reduce power consumption with or through Microsoft Technology...
I would love to know more green solutions in regards to window series and in relation to hardware like best energy efficient laptops and desktop etc
Twitter: @davinci4life
I like the idea of large companies going green and making a difference. I great to see companies setting examples and reducing their carbon footprint.
@jpang1
I would be interested in hearing about ways to reduce energy usage, and how emerging technologies would make that an easier goal to reach!
Would like to hear more, mostly about energy saving and improving battery life.
@theebladeograss
That's great to hear. Does this initiative also apply to all of the Microsoft Divisions? I was wondering about XBOX packaging and game packaging, whether this initiative also affects those areas. @smartglo1
That would be really cool. I like see how all companies are doing their best to have less of an impact.
That would be really cool. I like see how all companies are doing their best to have less of an impact. @lexwhoward
Microsoft being eco-friendly? Hmm this could be interesting. LETS TAKE DOWN APPLE WHILE WE AT IT!=] Yes, new technology that could be easier on the planet and environment could be very interesting. Tell me all about it!!
@Moealza
Of course I would like to hear more about conserving energy! Its always nice to see big businesses try and be a little more green
Email: friendsamongfish@hotmail.com
would definately love to hear more about environmental issues and how I can use technology to do my part to help out the planet
@funkymunkyoutle
would love to hear more about environmental issues within the company. When Sunchips started tackling environmental issues i gained a lot of respect for them, and the same goes for you.
Twitter-jesushlynn
This is the thing, for all of us to go to completely green it would take a massive social movement. I am totally for this kind of movement. Blog's like this one can help in that kind of Social movement. Thats what i would like this blog to do.
Twitter: @Swards31
I would love to hear more about environmental issues and how I can use technology to do my part to help out the planet.
@17ShortFuse
This is awesome! I think that its great that large companies are able to recognize that there are a lot of enviromental issues and they are willing to work to reduce these issues! I would live to hear more form Windows Blog because that means the company is listening to their customers! That means better products! I can use technology to help reuse older technology by upgrading and cleaning the components instead of throwing it all out at one time.
Yes. I would love to hear more about environmental issues & technology. We have to do more to preserve our planet.
@Wicked_1
No thanks, I get enough of that type of thing from other sources.
@ZuneGeek
Yes! And I think selecting any sort of digital distribution option for software I purchase, when available, is a great way for me and many other users to save plastic, paper, and often, money! @awesomeplant
Yeah that would be great to hear more anything to help the environment is great
twitter: @un1
I would definitely want to hear more about what Microsoft is doing to be environmentally friendly.
I really want to hear about how we could configure hardware and software with Windows 7 to save more power or any trick/tool for that purpose as well as anything that about green tech.
Yes, anything that helps.
@Rewire0
The easiest way I can think of is virtualization. With Hyper-V coming along so fast and its ability to run multiple systems on one physical box, you eliminate the need for additional hardware. This can go a long way in consolidating your inventory. Being an IT Admin, we just finished consolidating our cabinets at a data center. We went from 2 cabinets and 60 servers to 1 cabinet and 45 servers. This was due exclusively to our ability to host servers in a virtual environment without impacting productivity. Eliminating physical hardware can drastically decrease power consumption. Less=more
In my own honest opinion, I think it would be somewhat interesting to hear a few things here and there about environmental tips. I do have to admit that I am aware of the need to use tech better to help the planet, but don't really do much... Of course, I still do what I can, when I can. @Alertness
Good deal, I like Windows 7's way of making power saving easy. I let my laptop sleep most of the time I'm not using it, and I use hibernate a lot when I need to shut down without losing all my open windows.
I wouldn't mind hearing about how we can use technology to help the planet occassionally.
as long as you can make the article interesting to read, I am all for it. Technology that conserves energy, is always preferred when I buy a product. Its nice to see Microsoft is making a good effort to do this as well.

You guys rock! Send me some env info.
@westweet
I would love to hear more about environmental impact of technology, actually I wonder what MS is doing about that. Also, saving power sort of saves me cash.
@afreegoat
Indeed!
I don't really care about the whole green thing, but if you want to send me free stuff I'd love to start living a more green lifestyle. Also I own a zune, windows, xbox, I'm a member of xbox live, I use Windows Live Messenger, so pick me because I like your sausage.
jaaoneil@yahoo.com
I'd love to hear more on environmental issues and information on how we can act to help solve these issues with technology, especially since it'd be coming from a leading innovator in technology, Microsoft .
I'd like to hear more about your hosted apps and how that can reduce a family and a companies carbon footprint. Another topic is why packaging hasn't shrunk down to a DVD case for most of your offerings.
I'm all about taking care of this wonderful planet of ours in any and every way possible. Where would we be without it? @chrissycrue100
Environmental issues should be a consideration for all companies and the more windows can help the Earth the better! Keep the info coming :)
Here at our house we implemented an aggresive sleep mode on all the PC's in order to not have them on all the time. Sleep mode in Windows 7 is superb and works so well. To have your PC start up that fast and still help with the environment is a win-win situation.
Yes send me information on saving energy being a family of 5 computers I would luv to know!
jlprosser@ gmail @jlp4u3 twitter.
I definitely want to see more discussion on how to use technology to help with environmental issues.
@thundermh
I have found myself ordering more and more software online for download, rather than purchasing it in retail outlets, because I would rather burn the software to my own disks, and store than in my own filing system than deal with all of the extra packaging waste that comes from retail software.
I have also moved away from incandescent bulbs where-ever I could in my home (they tend to not work so well in the bathroom, because of steam from the shower), not for the savings on my electrical bill, but to reduce the emissions from our local power-plant, which burns natural gas, and is backed up with coal.
Ultimately, when the technology is better, I want to convert my house to solar and wind power, so that I am not taking from the grid, but giving back to it some much needed green energy. Also, when the price of LED bulbs comes down, I plan to use those in my home as well.
That is how I have been using technology (so far) to reduce my energy consumption and reduce some of the greenhouse emissions from my local power plant. It might not be much, but every little bit counts.
Now, for non-technology, I find myself walking more, rather than driving. (never did learn how to ride a bike! LOL!)
Twitter: dkmccue
Personally, I use two power strips that have individual switches for all outlets. I love them. Not sure how much power I'm actually saving, but to know that there is no current going to anything when they are fully off is nice to know.
Has Edison made it to Win7 yet?
Thank you for not just being Green, but also inspiring all of your clients to go in that direction.
@AnthonyK2
Absolutely! I think this is a very important topic given how much technology we use in our daily lives and the general concerns about impacting our planet. The greener the better!
I currently write software (on Windows) at a manufacturing company that automates procedures which currently involve mountains of paperwork. Less paper used = less trees cut down for paper = healthier environment.
As far as environmental topics on this blog, I think what you're currently doing is good enough.
I'd love to here more about environmental issues. Especially how we can be more efficient with electronics.
@Danni001
Only if it doesn't reduce the power of computers, because the typical response to reduce the power of the system. I want here how i can still have my 6 core computer 16GB of ram 10TB of hard drive space, 2 2GB video cards and 3 monitors. I want here real solutions not one that penalize those of us who have high end computers. Real solutions like more nuclear power plants to replace or dependency on coal
@nanoreaper
Yes, I think it is good to learn about methods of reducing our environmental impact in our everyday jobs. Thanks @pa_dahl
Yes, hearing about green tech would be great and hopefully would influence more companies to do so.
I would like to hear more on how technology can help us go green! Wooo! Technology Wooo!
oops forgot to put my twitter name it's @matt_247
It's great to see a big company like Microsoft acting responsible with our enviornment! Thank you!
@kellyb77
I would love to hear more, as long as it doesn't involve BP!
I'd love to hear more about how we can use technology to make a better planet. I work for a community that is constantly trying to develop new green and health technology, so I'd like all the information I can get. Thanks.
Its always good to know about how technology can help our planet.
@JuniorSoto
Good to hear about green movements from y'all. I've noticed more manufacturers have created bamboo cases for their computers! It's light and strong but most of all it's renewable. Not to mention it looks really good.
Given that I have a server I leave running almost 24/7, I always appreciate hearing ways I can reduce its power footprint!
@thain1982
Hearing more about technology being used to help the environment is always a good thing indeed!, especially being that the technology of today is the result of years and years of toxic industrialism, I love talking and hearing about power management and waste reduction!
venarleceridious@live.com
I think it's been said much better than I can, but certainly it's great to hear about things that can help the environment and help save us money as well.
We can use solar, wind, and water power!
I would like to hear the more technology side of the environmental issues, such as how you stated the Windows 7 cases were 50% more economical than the Vista cases. Further examples would be great, even with the upcoming IE9 how Microsoft incorporated features that are less power consuming. Maybe also put up some tutorials for those that don't know about the Windows 7 features that can help save energy (and in the long run even some money for you). I think these would all be great additions to the blog, and would help people know more about green technology.
@RichieB07
I mean We can use solar, wind, and water power!
@ReviewTouchApps
I like energy saving ideas, but what I REALLY like are child friendly websites that teach children cool stuff. Like a fun game where you would go around a house and click on things that you can turn off to save energy.
Yeah that would be sweet! @JoshC_09
yes I would like to hear more about it. Especially since that it's technology that's going to lead to a greener future
I personally would LOVE to know more about enviromental issues and how technology can help the planet. I'm always interested on getting new ideas on how to help the ecosystem.

I would like to know about technology that can help preserve our planet. We need some kind of technology that will get rid of our insane dependency on oil. The Nissan Leaf is a step in the right direction, but $32,000, really? I mean do they want to make a difference or allow the wealthy to do it on their own. I'd like a leaf with nothing in it, make it as basic as possible, then make it affordable and all electric, instead of the price of a sports car. Wireless electronics are nice too!
@bigvincec
I am very interested in the environmental aspects of your products, be it software or hardware. Please be free to integrate that information into your posts. Nice to hear that Microsoft is being a very eco-friendly and environmentally responsible corporation. As a responsible citizen, I try too to be eco-friendly as much as possible and introduce these habits into my daily life, such as re-using, recycling, going green, protecting and respecting natural resources. I also teach others on these topics through my non-profit work. I am very happy to use the products created and made by Microsoft, who is environmentally responsible. Please keep being so and do even more for our planet, and we are going to support you!
@vasilcenco
Help reducing dependence on foreign energy is always a plus. More nuclear plants and clean coal plants are the way to go.
i would not just like to hear about things being done, i would like to finally see some green initiative measures that actually affect each of our lives in a positive way, first hand.
i dream of a greener world, but that world was pillaged by humankind.
coexisting with nature is far out of the question, it's way to late for that, but it's nice that we try to push the collapse of our planet's ecosystems and resources back as far as we can to prolong our destruction, from fear of colony collapse. haha
just my personal beliefs i suppose.
JeremiahFrost zune social member
short answer: NO. most "waste reduction" results in a waste of energy and resources that is more harmful than the original methods. i would, howevver, like to hear about energy management and reduction of resources used, as that is not only interesting in an economic way but also an efficient way to conserve the environment
dannyp077@ufl.edu
I am interested in hearing more about environmental issues, and would like to do my part in increasing energy efficiency.
Yeah I would love to hear how MS is handling environmental issues. I would also like to see you guys put windows on a solar laptop. lol
nunes.cody@gmail.com
Yeah, I can see how PCs and servers can account for a sizeable percentage of power consumption. If we could speed boot-up times, I for one would definitely start shutting down when walking away. But when your computer takes anywhere from 2-5 minutes to boot to a usable state, the prevalent mode of thinking is to just blank the screen.
@Jimbo_Sims
I like technological advances, and I like Green.
Having BOTH while not losing performance... fantastic!
@DJIslandBoy
I love the environment and all things that help it through its troubled existence
@craazyville
I'd love to hear more about how you're going to add some Home Theater (Media Center) capabilities to Home Server so that I can save some electricity by using a single device to both store -and- play music, display photos, watch local and streamed video (e.g. Netflix).
Tweet: licensed_user
I really like to see companies taking steps to increase efficiency without government prodding. You should definitely increase awareness of the built in power-saving features of Windows 7.
I would like to hear about how Microsoft reduces the use of power as a multi-billion dollar company. Ive also learned how and try to take advantage of technology by going to the settings of most electronics and just putting most things on low power use in order to save more energy.
Saving energy means saving money as well as having maximum efficiency, and that is something everybody should be concerned with, because if yo have more money, you can spend or save more money. So I definitely say talk more on saving energy.

I'd like to hear more about how I can use Windows technology to reduce energy usage across my home network.
Richard Smeltzer
@rsmeltzer91
Environmental issues as they pertain to Windows is definitely something I'd like to see.
keep us informed!!! savin energy is great, especially when you don't have to do anything special.
Yes I would love to hear more about Green IT through the Windows Blog. I especially would like to hear more about environmentally friendly ways I can dispose of old electronics and computers.
Yes, with the need of energy will be more and more in the future, it is nice to hear how Windows will be better help in conserving power consumption.
Yes I would like to see more Green talk with suggestions on how I can help.
Thanks
Although I do like to read about ways to go green, I think that this may not be the blog I want to read it on. Like someone else here said I don't like to mix my environmental RSS feed with my tech RSS feed. I think that a few tidbits here and there about reducing energy costs might be okay though. Twitter:@dropfbombs
Sure, the number of computer used everyday is enormous, so it'd be awesome to hear how you guys are helping
Twitter Israel09
I'd love to hear more - - I'm especially looking to lower energy costs, as well as doing what I can to "go green".
@randiek1
You know how when you change your oil or tires and the business who provided the product or service will collect and safely recycle? Perhaps that'd be a good thing to do with computers, since they are outdated faster than either my oil or tires. Best Buy, WalMart, Microsoft, Apple, Ultimate Electronics, Circuit City (are those still around?), all those places should work together to safely recycle and reuse the landfill and harmful components of computers to not only be more green, but save future costs on future generations, and perhaps even streamline computer, and maybe electronic devices in general, production.
Green packaging doesn't really turn my crank. What I want to here is the ways Windows7 is able to conserve energy.
I am really interested in hearing more on environmental problems caused due to technology and improve it in a great way...It would be really nice if the technology that we have can be made more environment frendly ...for eaxmaple..a monitor of comp switches of if user moves out n stores this energy for later use...
sure knowing more to help the world is great, not only me but I think the whole world should know what you guys are doing to change the world into a cleaner invironment.

Integrating tech talk with environmental talk sounds good to me, especially if you can pass along tech tips that help boost energy efficiency ...
i have been researching the use of solar and wind power alternatives in my area i would love to hear more about this
(sorry forgot to leave my twitter) hebeach89
personally i would love to see more on green tech, did you consider making a separate blog just about that?
Environmental responsibility is important to us. It'd be very helpful to hear what we can do to participate with technology.
I would love to hear how i can use technologies to check my energy usage over a period of time.

I want to hear about how to make an easier way to remotely turn computers on&off. Wake on LAN/WAN is so hard to use and setup, especially when you don't have a complete control over every network you use. Well, it's hard even if you do. Please make something that any average person can use.
@hypermax
i like that microsoft i seeing a flaw and correcting it in order to become a better company, although i would like to see more creative solutions like using solar panels on your roofs in order to generate heat ...etc
Personally i only really care to hear about energy saving windows features. Dont bring "enviromental issues" or global warming talk into the mix.
Besides power savings, how does IT go green? Virtualization helps as does recycling gadgets, but the requirement of electricity and precious metals makes it hard to see how "green" IT can go. Your thoughts on the matter? Or is this simply a case of optimizing each piece so that the whole is better than the parts?
In the end, My PC wont help me be more environmentally friendly. unless you can make my laptop battery last more than an hour. changing software wont help at all. slight changes are not the answer, the only changes to any technology that will make a big enough impact are drastic changes. like sextuplet times the battery life, or electric cars then banning gas ones. oh sure, your package may be 37% lighter, but that doesn't equate to much, it's still plastic. why cant you use biodegradable cardboard like everyone else? stop thinking small.
I would like to hear more about energy efficent divices i am not a huge "green" fan but it would be cool to hear about new things that could help save energy.
please give us more information on this as this is very useful :)

I'm curious to learn more about the data centers around the world that Microsoft has and how they are becoming greener!
@danz32
I definitely want to hear more about environmental issues! As the technology I use continues to reinvent itself in greener and more sustainable ways, I find that I use it more often to be more green myself - monitoring my household's energy consumption, finding new ways to recycle, and leading an overall greener life. Thanks for doing your part, Microsoft!

Microsoft is doing a very good job to help the environment and promote how they are helping the environment as well. I work for a company that's top priority is greening the environment and you are one of the few that is doing it as well. Companies should follow in your footsteps and people will know that they are helping the environment by purchasing a Microsoft product.

Yes in this day and age, being grren is not only important but should be ingrained into our daily activities. Trust being online, using computers etc is a huge part of our daily activities, so YES Microsoft send green tips our way!
Honestly... No I wouldn't. I appreciate you having a separate twitter stream for green issues.
Good job. Keep it up.
Captain Planet, thats funny dude. I think him & his group of eco-tards are rediculous. Honestly, short of nuking and doing a literal poison that makes all water undrinkable, the entire history of the human race has had less of an environmental impact than one day of the icelandic volcano.
@renfeld
Yes, please do - I want to be green, so anything to facilitate that (e.g., how-to posts on this blog) would be greatly appreciated. @interdigital

Using Google Earth like technology, people can more easily spot effects of illegal activity on their land, such as illegal mines, poluting rivers, virgin forest being slashed and burned by illegal farming, and deforestation from prohibited logging.
I believe I already use Windows' power saving features and my mobile devices' power saving features quite aggressively :-) so I'd like to hear what can be done to improve my use of technology. Btw a few things I'd really like to make sure the Windows 7 team takes notice of so they can possibly address them in the next release of Windows:
- Windows 7 does not show a Power icon or allow users to show one when he/she is using a desktop PC. I think that should change as even desktops may need switching power plans. Also, Windows 7 only shows 2 power plans, one of which, the Balanced plan is fixed. This is a gross misstep (all three or even more power plans should be shown) and no plan should be "pinned". I should be able to switch between "Power saver" plan and "High performance".
- USB devices like flash drives remain powered on in Windows 7 even after doing "Safely Remove". While this feature is by design I'm told to be useful for USB devices that require charging, it takes up laptop power unnecessarily for devices like flash drives and USB hard disks.
Hope my feedback goes somewhere.
Energy conservation is a good thought...Implementing is for a good action and Microsoft has already implemented....

I am really excited on learning these facts and also the goal to 30% by 2012...CooL Rocking Microsoft GREEN !!

Why I'd love to hear, but it has to be something practical....
@dnickb
Definitely. It would not hurt to know more if anything can be improved in our use of technology to save our planet. Every version of WIndows has always been more and more power efficient (it's amazing really given the new features continually packed into the product). It also amazes me how big companies like Microsoft use solar panels (which are very expensive) to power their campuses. Companies for example use video conferencing now-a-days to hold meetings instead of meeting in person. This not only saves the time and expense of traveling but also less air travel means less fuel used per person and less pollution.

For me a big concern are the viability of safely disposing of electronics without poisoning people.
@kerama
I am already a regular reader of MSN Green (http://green.in.msn.com/), http://blogs.msdn.com/b/see/ and blog.microsoft-hohm.com/news.aspx. Given the massive resources and "energy" Microsoft puts into green use of technology, I think I am aware and well-versed with what needs to be done. The WIndows team blog is not the place for this topic. Mail: xpclient and domain is live.com.
Almost all the light bulbs in my home are spiral fluorescent; every scrap of paper, glass jars, recyclable plastics go to recycling; food scraps get composted; etc....Of course I'm interested environmental issues!
Thanks so much for the tips on saving energy on my computers:o)
You betcha. It ain't easy being green, especially if one owns a computer. Anything that can be shared that would ameliorate the energy consumption of the computer and its toxic consequences upon disposal would be greatly appreciated.
Technology can be use to prevent a lot of disasters such as the BP oil slip, they can use this computer to simulate worst case scenarios, and helpping create methods to prevent and solve.
Well, I submitted my email when I signed on but my Twitter account is @BoulderBill - Help us become greener
I'd like to hear more. I try to be as green as possible when it comes to transportation, and because I could be greener, I'm all about learning how technology can help the planet.
Gotta love ways to save money. More, please. :D
@thesammon
Does Microsoft have a solution to the global e-waste issue which is the single most large problem affecting the environment due to the use of technological gadgets? There's the reburbished PC program but nearly every version of Windows requires a faster, more powerful processor so I *honestly* don't believe that's "green" by any stretch of the imagination. Each new version of Windows should always be designed to run on current hardware and require only marginally more computing power. The engineering of Windows needs to change so every version doesn't need a faster computer (Windows 7 is solid progress in this aspect as it has the same requirements as its precedessor, Vista but I believe that may not be the case again with Windows 8 unless MS surprises us with the system requirements ;). I'd like to hear more about green use of technology and your thoughts on this particularly.
P.S. I appreciate the other green efforts in your company btw.

I'm down with environmentalism, but when it comes to tech I'm concerned with efficiency first and foremost with environmental sustainability as a positive externality. The power management policies for business is interesting though, it always bothers me that my office's computers are always on even when the building is empty, and even if we shut them off, they automatically restart by default.
@ibzrg1570
I would love to learn new ways to use Microsoft Products to make my Computing, and teaching, more energy efficient! What are some of the environmental issues we are facing?
Thanks Windows!
Now a full redesign of windows that is not a resource hog and can do the same thing on a low cost - low energy CPU, not needing tons of RAM and multi core CPU's for being a bit responsive.
Now *that* would save energy !!
I'd like to hear more. Especially if what I heard included eradicating the stupid, painful, and wasteful blister packs from everything you do. This would make me a very happy camper.

i thing it would to hear more about environmental tech issues and if people would care about the environment that they would atleast put there computers to sleep and get a better computer that saves more power than an older on
lefevrepreston@yahoo.com
Of course I wanna hear more from windows experience blog about environmental issues plus i think i cam help out the planet using technology by employing some power efficient tools from computers to use on cars eg power off if the vehicle is idle for a few minutes.
atuwei@live.com
I'm pretty into environmental issues, and I think it would be interesting to hear about how Microsoft is working to reduce it's environmental impact. However, not too many posts; maybe once every few months.
Also, I think solutions such as the Microsft Hohm product could prove to be very useful. I only wish they had more partners.

Sure, keep going. IT based polution is one of the upcoming problems in our world.
@obiwan007
It would be great to hear about environmental issues and how you are planning on addressing them in future products (e.g. Windows 8, Windows Phone).
@yosefgold
Absolutely, I'd love any info on reducing energy usage and (of course) saving some money! After being unemployed for a year and now working as a temp, I'm all about pinching as many pennies as I can.

Of course, everybody would like to know more about saving energy and our planet!
Yes. Environmental issues are critically important, and are widely ignored by those in power (government, corporations, and media). Your environmental commentary should, of course, be limited to tech contexts--but that leaves lots of room.
Uh-oh. I'm now wasting electrons by remembering to append my twitter handle in a separate message.
@carlsiec
I'd like to see how Microsoft is working to make future versions of Windows more power efficient and how they're working with hardware manufacturers to make their products more power efficient while extending battery life. Why can't Windows powered laptops have the battery life of a Mac?

Yes I would love to hear from you and help out in this environment campaign. Everytime I see a tree being cut my heart pains in sorrow at how this leads to destroying the natural ecosystem of Mother Earth
@coolrjm
Evvironmental is cool, maybe they could put a Microsolft Hohm app on window 7, that allows us to see info about our houses. The usage is cool, I started getting some of my stuff digitally through games for windows live, the windows 7 box is a good idea.

Always love hearing more.

Like many others here, I'm not much of a "greenie", but I live in an area (Midwest) where energy costs are extremely cheap. That said, I manage a number of large customer networks with hundreds of PCs. Managing energy costs through power management policies for these customers may contribute to thousands of dollars saved ever year, which always helps me sell products and helps to contribute to a greener environment.

No, no thank you.
My biggest suggestion would be in the retail space. There is so much stuff that comes with products that just gets thrown away when the product comes in. At Microsoft that could be going strictly digital with downloads. I've seen this happening with new versions of Office which is nice. For products like smartphones you don't need to ship a product or instruction manual. People smart enough to use a smartphone (no pun intended) should be able to use a given link to get a downloadable version of the manuals. The less you actually ship in packaging the less will end up in landfills eventually.
We would all like to hear how to help out. @KC7ISD
It would be interesting to read but I think that should be a separate blog.
@kohenkatz
would like to hear more on reducing the physical media and encouraging customers to download and install.. great deal of green stuff in this area

Honestly, no, except as it specifically relates to Windows. Power management for your PC is within the scope of this blog. Not so sure about kindness to the planet. There are plenty of places to go for that information, and duplicating it here is unnecessary. In general, focusing on core competencies is the way to go. Give us Windows Experience!
Sorry, but I have to duplicate to append my e mail address:
