When Windows 7 does come out, will we have an exhaustive list of changes vs. Windows Vista, in the style of Apple's "300 new features" bits that claim that a new key combo is a feature? My bet is that a list like this would have features in the thousands if done right.

Ah, to be one of the favored few. Where is his comment, anyway?

I want to light a candle next to his. It's the little things, so hopelessly buried in detail, with little hope of ever being changed (back) that depress me.

"documents"-location should point to an actual documents folder, not a library, simply due to the fact that many applications and games use the default documents folder to save many files and settings, and can amount to a few gigabytes. A small relatively pristine system partition with data and apps relegated to a larger partition or separate drive can be easier to maintain. Common document/music/pictures folders are nice as well. Separate actual folders for each user can be (um) a nightmare (ok thats too strong) inconvenient.

 But I know I'm just blowing air in the forest....congrats, Rajeev, wherever you are.

Bydia, in Windows 7 you should be able to drag any folder you want from Windows Explorer to the Favorites section of the Navigation Pane. Also: if you right click on Favorites in Windows Explorer you can add current location. You most certainly add folders to the Favorites section of Windows Explorer in the Navigation Pane.

chitbill, not sure I follow you. The Documents Library *does* point to a actual physical folder in your profile (the physical default documents folder in the Windows 7 Beta is called "My Documents"). The Documents Library can be configured to consist of a single folder such as the already mentioned My Documents folder in your profile or any other folders you choose. You can also configure the default placement of files for a specific Library - this means when you add a file to a Library you can choose which physical folder within that Library the file is added to. Libraries are meant as a way to organize all your "stuff" on your PC for quick access and sharing. The default folders for applications and games installed on your PC running Windows 7 are still there and the common document/music/pictures/videos folders are also still there. I also disagree with you on seperate folders for each user. I don't want my girlfriend's stuff mixed in with my stuff in my profile. I want hers to be within her profile and for it to stay there. I would bet most users would feel the same way. I will talk more about Libraries here in a few weeks.

@Brandon, After designating a single folder as a documents-location folder and making it the default save location, A particular App I  use daily chooses to use c:\users\yournamehere\my documents, as opposed to Vista where it uses the folder I have designated as the primary documents-location.

"documents" can/ could have subfolders, one for each member of your circle, with each subfolder owned /controlled by that member. But that's all theory, what I maybe meant to suggest was that personalized/common settings would be a selection box away for an administrator ("use [this setting] for all users"). If After that explanation you still disagree, I'm glad, because you read what I said, thanks.

are unaffected by my choice of a documents-location, and remain "c:\users\etc\etc" except for "favorites".. I don't happen to believe that my version of windows 7 has a physical "documents-location" folder pointer but a pointer to a library that contains a pointer to one or more folders.

I welcome Libraries  but insist extant programs unaware of them need to have the physical locations

Actually, if the software is developed along proper Windows development guidelines, all paths to the user folders are included within the API. If application hardcoded a specific path to c:\documents and settings\username\my documents, it was affected by the change just to Windows Vista. Now in Win7, the API path is really dependent upon the user's chosen default library documents folder.

In defense of libraries, I believe that the user interface suffices to answer your concern. Regardless of which folder the document is stored it, all folders in the Documents library are shown--even though it is a mix of different folders sometimes even on different drives and machines. Furthermore, users are becoming more and more dependent on search. Win7's search feature really makes it easy for a user to not even know where documents are stored.

In Windows 7 Build 7000 ,7022,7048 and 7057 when you click on the start menu then All programs the very edge of the last item in the list appears for an instant and then gets displaced by the separator. Looks like a tiny bug/glitch that it is showing there the separator should show up at the same time as the list (or at least the last item should never draw).

To see this bug you need to do the following.

"uncheck" Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu.

And also you need to have enough programs installed so the All programs menu is filled up.

Also make sure the scroll bar in All Programs is at the top.

Now when you click on All Programs the last folder should peek for a second then go away.

Windows 7 Build 7057

Not sure if this is a bug or if its supposed to be this way but when you change themes the Screen Saver goes to "None" and you need to select your Screen Saver again.

It's me, I nearly flunked speech class. Sorry.

1. An application works in vista such that it stores a whole lot of information in the documents folder, the one I chose before I installed it. I would like to be able to have that identical behavior in Windows 7.

B. After logging on as an Administrator and installing several applications, I would like those applications to work on a different account. TEST: do the above, then create an administrative account, log out, log in to the new account.Cakewalk wants a serial number. "Sims (an online download) asks me for the CD. Nero wants me to register. Itunes reconfigures itself, asks me to restart, asks me to agree to a long agreement, then doesn't see any music (I, being the omniscient system operator, tell it where to look).

Log Out Log in to Original Account. CRASH-system restart.

Log into original account, shaken (but not surprised).

If I'd only paid the 2k a year or so I'd probably know to install apps using the built-in administrative account, and insert something into the registry. But it's a Beta and I want to say Something before it becomes a law.

I just the Advanced Tag Editor wasn't removed in Windows Media Player 12 . I had used it to tag lots of my music files.

Speaking of Windows Media Player 12, came in this morning and found that it suddenly can't play a bunch of songs that it was able to play on Saturday.  The Zune software can play them, but no media player.  Since the Zune's so slow to load, I''ll be going with VLC.

I like that the close buttons are finally back. However, I think it ruins the point when you convert back to a list. As an OPTION, please show a thumbnail to the right of the overflow list as you hover over items in the list also adding Aero Peek functionality to this would help also (like how it will work with Alt+Tab).

If users can disable/enable this feature it provides both performance and personal preference options.

Screen Saver BUG in Winsows 7 Build 7057!

I have already talked about the issue where when you change the windows theme the Screen Saver goes to "NONE".

But now I found a new bug.

When you right click on desktop and select Personalize It says "NONE" for the Screen Saver but this is wrong because when I click on the Screen Saver button I can see that I in fact do have a Screen Saver selected!

So the bug is windows is reporting that I have no Screen Saver selected when in fact I do!!

I am not sure yet what causes this to happen.

I have no Feedback button on build 7057 so if one of you could report this bug to Microsoft that would be great!!

I found a "bug" in all builds of Windows 7 that was also in Windows Vista.

If you run a program and it needs to turn off "Aero" there is a bug that causes all folders to not remember views. It will remain like this until you restart you computer.

Again restarting the computer will fix the "Remembering Folder views"

This "bug" is very rear because most software nowadays works in "Aero".

I wonder if Microsoft even knows about this bug?

I do not have the feedback button in build 7057 anymore so could someone please report this bug to Microsoft for me?

<Feature Request> The frequently-used programs should appear at the BOTTOM of the Start Menu. Or at least put an option for doing so? Anyone knowing the registry-hack for doing this? Thanks.
