A couple of weeks ago, I blogged about how we were partnering with Saks Fifth Avenue on decorating their windows along both 5th Ave and 50th Street in NYC to help celebrate the holidays. You can check out the unveiling which took place in New York City on November 23rd here.
During the unveiling, Kristen Chenoweth and the chorus of PS22 performed live to help spread the holiday cheer as the windows went “live.” If you’re in New York and are doing some shopping, you should definitely stop by Saks and check out the “Twinkle Twinkle Little Flake” windows. There are 20 HD monitors (a combination of 52”, 42”, 36” and 32” displays) in the holiday windows on 5th Avenue running custom animations all powered by Windows 7 PCs. I’m told window 19 is quite impressive – it literally is a wall of monitors. We also have a PC Lounge on the 9th floor that gives you a great opportunity to test-drive Windows 7 for yourself if you haven’t already!
On top of showcasing Windows 7, the Saks windows on 50thStreet also feature Windows 7-powered monitors with a live holiday wishes Twitter feed. People wanting to help take part in spreading holiday cheer can share their holiday wishes via Twitter by including the hastag #holidaywindows with their tweet. These tweets show up in the windows for folks to see in New York City!
If you can’t make it to NYC to see the windows in person, you can download the Windows 7 “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Flake” Holiday Theme for your Windows 7 PC! It features artwork straight from the book that the holiday windows are based on – the book was written by Mike Reiss, who also wrote for The Simpsons.
Finally, if you’re wanting go a little further with decking out your Windows 7 PC for the holidays, check out this post by fellow Microsoftie Sean Alexander. He offers up another Holiday Theme for Windows 7, a Yule Log Visualization for Windows Media Player in Windows 7, and more!
How about a family oriented theme...make Family Pack a permanent sku. At least extend its availability through the holidays.
I just wanted to let the Windows 7 team know how disappointed I am that the "Family Pack" has been discontinued just in time for the holidays. That looks like a pretty cheap move on Microsoft's part. This is something Apple has been offering its customers for years.
i agree. it would make more sense to bring it out now especially that the holidays are here.
I went to buy the Family Pack for Windows 7 last week and Buy.com wanted $250 for it! Microsoft, please offer the original $150 Family Pack deal permanently!
As tiharr stated, please bring back the $150 family pack. I already own 2 copies of premium, 1 copy of professional, and 1 copy of Ultimate. I want the $150 special for my children who have families and multiple PC's.
With Xmas coming, a family pack is a perfect present to a family one cares for.
Given the runaway success of the Windows 7 Family Pack (ie. its sold out everywhere that matters...) I am curious as to when additional Family Packs will be made available.
Just wanted to say that I also think the family packs should be available again for the holidays.
I can't believe you guys discontinued the family pack. You finally offer a decent price on windows so a person can update all the conputers in his home without taking out a second mortage and then 6 weeks later it's gone. Seriously It shouldn't cost $120 to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.
It's no wonder so many people dislike Microsoft.
Great. Microsoft gave me a lump of coal in the form of a discontinued Family Pack upgrade. That should make a nice Mac ad. Why is it so tough for MS to give home users with multiple PCs a break on upgrades?
Thank you everyone for your comments on the Windows 7 Family Pack.
Since announcing the Windows 7 Family Pack, we've always said it was a limited time offer while supplies last in select geographies.
The response to the Windows 7 Family Pack has been very positive. In some cases, the offer has been sold out.
To people interesting in upgrading their PCs, they can still purchase Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate upgrade products in stores.
Thanks!
tiharr, thanks for your comment!
We offer suggested retail prices for some of our products. For The Windows 7 Family Pack, the suggested retail price was $149.99. However retailers are at liberty to set their own prices independent of Microsoft.
The point is not that you stated from the beginning that it was a limited time offer. The point is that it shouldn't have been a limited at all, and what's this" while supply lasts" crap, it's freakin software. Apple sells a family pack of Snow Leopard that allows you to upgrade 5 computers. It's only $49 and it's not a limited time offer.
Brandon, your statement simply doesn't hold water. "While supplies last" simply doesn't apply to Windows. It can be downloaded an infinite number of times -- there are no "supplies" online. Today, who cares what's available in stores??
Please speak the truth -- Microsoft doesn't want to sell the Family Pack because it's too much of a discount and hurts the bottom line too much. I understand it, but I don't like it. It's not competitive with Windows applications, many of which have "multiple-computer discounts" now (not to mention Apple!). Revenue comes first; the consumer be damned. Don't try to put a pretty face on it.
I was very upset this morning when I attempted ordering 3 copies of the Windows 7 Family Upgrade pack for Christmas gifts and our family when I found out that there were none available and that Microsoft wasn't going to be releasing any more.
Just shy of 6 weeks from the release date and this offer is gone because there is no more stock? Not a very smart move for Christmas and in these economic times! Apple still sells it's 5-computer Family Pack of OS X and has been since 2002!
Now I'm going to recommend my friends that WERE going to recieve Windows 7 family packs as Christmas gifts that they'll have to stick with Vista or XP till another affordable sale or alternative comes out.
Personally I run three computers that have the Windows RC release on them. In March when they start to run out I will downgrade them back to either Windows XP or Vista depending on their licensing. I already paid a premium retail price for Vista Ultimate for one of the computers and won't be doing so again for quite a while unless there is some sort of big promo or sale.
Hey Brandon, how are you doing?
You know that while supplies lasts is ridiculous, dont you? we are talking about a DVD, you can make infinite copies of that.
The sadest part is that Family Pack wasn´t even available worldwide, Microsoft is continously treating the rest of the world like second class citizens.
Do you really think that home users can spend 150 for each pc? i have a netbook, a 3 year old PC and a another 6 year old PC, do you think i´m going to spend 450 in software? Really?
Don´t you guys realize that with that hefty price you are only promoting piracy?
Have you stopped to think that maybe with a lower price people will stop piracying your stuff?
Do you think this is the way you´re going to kill XP?
Flash news for you, we are in one of the maior economic crisis of the last years, i won´t buy you 3 licenses of 7, i´ll keep my 2 xp and my vista.
Your greed will be your doom.
Regards.
Went to buy the Family Pack today, alas, it is no more.
Oh well, I guess I'll just hope Santa brings me the Ultimate upgrade for Christmas!
"How about a family oriented theme...make Family Pack a permanent sku. At least extend its availability through the holidays." Ditto, I didn't know this was limited time offer. Chances are now that I will have to wait until I get a new laptop, but that is not in the cards right now. Too expensive to upgrade all of our machines, especially when I already have XP licenses that are paid for. Maybe a MAC will be my next upgrade.
Family Pack SKU's was a good thing going. Why does MS think that having the 3-pack Office Teacher and Students editions works fine but yet timebomb the Win7 Family Pack SKU? It's a good vibe when I originally heard of the family pack before Win7 was released. Good buzz and goodwill. I thought it was a great invitation to buy Win7 without a huge cost hit for families. Heck I even thought this would be a great way to prevent piracy of Windows.
I would imagine that just the fact alone that the Win7 Family Pack has been selling out at retailers shows you have a winning strategy to migrate users from XP and even perhaps wins some hearts from *nix/Apple users.
Oh well, what do we know?
just in time for the holidays.
i know the deal said limited time but it didn't say Dec. 1st...
if i knew i had till Dec. 1 i would have bought it already!
ya know?
