We have said that Windows 8 is a complete reimagination of the Windows operating system. Nothing has been left unexplored, including the Windows logo, to evaluate how it held up to modern PC sensibilities. The Windows logo is a strong and widely recognized mark but when we stepped back and analyzed it, we realized an evolution of our logo would better reflect our Metro style design principles and we also felt there was an opportunity to reconnect with some of the powerful characteristics of previous incarnations.
We had a very short list of agencies that we wanted to work with on the redesign of the logo and were thrilled when Pentagram agreed to join us in the project. Pentagram’s illustrious history speaks for itself, but we were particularly attracted to their sense of classic graphic design which fit well with our Metro design principles.
Early in the development cycle for Windows 8, in a conference room on the Microsoft campus, we assembled a kick off meeting with Paula Scher, Michael Beirut and Daniel Weil from Pentagram and a few designers and marketing leaders from Windows and across the company. The team spent a full day sharing some of the Metro style design philosophy; the Windows brand history and values as well as graphic design and technology industry trends.
"To see what is in front of one's nose needs a constant struggle."- George Orwell
That is the feeling we had when Paula Scher (from the renowned Pentagram design agency) showed us her sketches for the new Windows logo.
Paula asked us a simple question, “your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?”
In some ways you can trace the evolution of the Windows logo in parallel with the advancements of the technology used to create logos. From the simple two color version in Windows 1.0 to the intricate and detailed renderings in Windows Vista and Windows 7, each change makes sense in the context in which it was created. As computing capabilities increased, so did the use of that horse power to render more colors, better fonts, and more detailed and life-like 3D visual effects like depth, shadows, and materiality. We have evolved from a world of rudimentary low resolution graphics to today’s rich high-resolution systems. And what started as a simple “window” to compliment the product name became a flying or waving flag.
But if you look back to the origins of the logo you see that it really was meant to be a window. "Windows" really is a beautiful metaphor for computing and with the new logo we wanted to celebrate the idea of a window, in perspective. Microsoft and Windows are all about putting technology in people's hands to empower them to find their own perspectives. And that is what the new logo was meant to be. We did less of a re-design and more to return it to its original meaning and bringing Windows back to its roots – reimagining the Windows logo as just that – a window.
Let’s look back at a few of the versions along the way.
Few remember the original Windows logo, yet we found it both refreshing and inspiring in relation to the work we have been doing on the Metro style design visuals. Using simple lines and clear straight forward concept, this logo reminded us of what a great and evocative name we have with “windows”.
For many of us this was the image in our mind when we think of past Windows logos. The now classic window shape and the introduction of the four colors were hallmarks of the Windows brand for many years to come. The introduction of the “waving effect” gives the logo a sense of motion. This logo would be the basis of the Windows versions throughout the 1990s.
The next major incarnation of the logo came with the release of Windows XP. What has come to be known as the “Windows flag” is a cleaner more sophisticated mark than its predecessors. The version that populated the lower left hand corner of Windows PCs next to the word “Start” also gained a sense of materiality (plastic?) and a 3D effect from the rich gradients and shadows.
The Windows Vista release marked the beginning of the AERO design aesthetic in Windows with a key component of the interface being the “AERO glass” effect. Replacing the green Start button was the round glass-like button with a now flattened version of the “flag” from Windows XP. Internally, this icon became known as the “pearl”. You can see the intricate lighting effects of the faux glass. In many ways signaling just how powerful of a rendering engine the PC had become. This version of the logo was largely unchanged for Windows 7.
With Windows 8, we approached the logo redesign with a few key goals on mind.
1. We wanted the new logo to be both modern and classic by echoing the International Typographic Style (or Swiss design) that has been a great influence on our Metro style design philosophy. Using bold flat colors and clean lines and shapes, the new logo has the characteristics of way-finding design systems seen in airports and subways.
2. It was important that the new logo carries our Metro principle of being “Authentically Digital”. By that, we mean it does not try to emulate faux-industrial design characteristics such as materiality (glass, wood, plastic, etc.). It has motion – aligning with the fast and fluid style you’ll find throughout Windows 8.
3. Our final goal was for the new logo to be humble, yet confident. Welcoming you in with a slight tilt in perspective and when you change your color, the logo changes to reflect you. It is a “Personal” Computer after all.
We hope you enjoy our new logo.

Sexiest logo ever for WindOS !!
Win Win Windows ~ FTW Microsoft!
Its hard to grasp this new change. So I will hold judgement until I see it in the product.
Wow. Big change, but I think it accurately reflects how Microsoft is attempting to modernize their brands.
I like the new design, and I think it'll look great on Windows 8, but the classic 90s logo is still my favorite. I'm hoping we'll see it debut on the 29th.
Gorgeous new logo. But what are we going to do with the outdated logos on our keyboards?
I think the new logo it's an amazing piece of history! It's a Metro "idea" you feel that!!! I love the Metro philosphy! But, I think, also the Windows Phone logo is great!!
You are on the right way to make a real musterpiece. Even better than the so-call-great MacOS X ;)!
It's a matter of taste and you'll never get consensus when redesigning a brand. Personally I would have liked the 'window' bit of the logo to be flat square, like the metro style, rather then the perspective version. Hey, but that is my opinion... and I will eventually like this logo. :-)
I don't know if my eyes trick me, but the logo looks very weird to me. The 3D perspective. It seems that the right half is wider than the left half. Am I the only one?
The white line in the middle shold be moved right. And while you're at it, make it a little less 3D. After all, Metro is 2D.
This is the first Windows logo that looks like it was actually designed. However, a truly Swiss approach would not have the perspective effect. Also the TM and (R) bits should be removed. You don't see an (R) next to a Nike swoosh or the Apple apple anymore. They are just clutter.
Now to get you guys to get with the times and stop calling it windows when there are no "windows" in metro.... call it tiles or metro or something that is relevant to the new design mantra.
I'm a fan of Windows. I'm a HUGE fan of Windows 8. But this, guys, is epic failure.. Why not just make it like the start button in the WDP, maybe in one color, but this... this is disappointing
I absolutely love the new design. Metro, Windows, Tiles, all in a nice simple and classy logo. Seriously Windows FTW all day, every day. Kudos to the crew at Redmond.
GAP thought their logo redesign was the bomb also... and it turned out to be literally. Maybe it'll grow on me but initial reaction = meh
I especially love the 'TM' and the 'R', really accentuates the clean lines and modern feel! /sarcasm
The logo itself reflecting a tilted window is great and would have looked brilliant with colored gradients. But without color, it's UGLY! My Windows life is now colorless and monotonous. And with all the Metro Mania, why is the "Windows" font itself not from the Segoe family? I knew this change was coming after windowsteamblog.com/.../windows-recession-sweepstakes-4-what-s-a-picture-worth.aspx but to get rid of the symbolic colors altogether is a rather big shock to me. It's a not-so-happy shock but I'll live with it. Modern designers don't want to take the effort on a logo and think ugly flat colors are "bold". I still like the Windows XP logo the best.
I was wondering why the "Start" button on the new Samsung Series 7 Slate was 4 blocks instead of the current Windows logo like the "Build" version of the Samsung Slate has.
oh my god, please let this be a bad dream
ugly!!!! please add some colors in it!!! :(((((
I hate the new logo. The flag is what represent windows the best. You see the Windows flag and you know that you were going to buy a windows computer. Please change it back to the flag. I BEG YOU TOO!!!
Gotta agree with @mscore and @emalamisura, ditch the TM and R clutter.
I think Pentagram is playing a joke on you. They are a design firm, after all... one that likely uses Macs almost exclusivly.
I don't like it much. I'd rather have a fully 2D square logo like Windows Marketplace, or a single-color version of the Windows 7 logo.
Love it!!! Please consider this DeviantArt rendering of a possible advert using your logo ... http://fav.me/d4pu5w3
I saw this the other day and it just clicked with me, it would be perfect for an online advert where the tiles scroll under your logo...
Nice, but why not ho the whole way and make the desktop Metro as well? Give the option to go back to the aero design for those who want it but it's pointless to "reimagine" windows when it looks the same as previous versions.
Nnnn. I don't hate it, but I disagree with the justification of it. And I think you guys had a better option in the wings already. Please take a look at this spillwaybrain.wordpress.com/.../on-the-windows-8-logo and let me know what you think.
I'm gonna miss the colorful logo. But did they really hire a whole separate group just to draw a box with 2 lines? :/ Any dude with Paint or Photoshop can do that.
Gorgeous logo this. The best Windows logo ever. Very well done.
But as some others have mentioned, what about Windows keys in the keyboards around the world? Will they get this new logo as well?
The tilt seems a little weird to me. I also really dislike that shade of blue (despite blue being my favorite color). Maybe post what it would look like under the different color schemes? I could see this logo looking pretty nifty in red, I guess...maybe?
I get the logo needed to change for Metro but I am unsure as to whether this was the right final choice. Looks a little bit too simple. A lot of people on the Windows Facebook page think it looks terrible.
To be honest, I saw this logo leak sometime last week and figured it was fake because it just does not seem professional enough
Actually, I love the direction Windows 8 is heading towards.
Art and logo design is always subjective but the one that appeals to the most number of people is true art and this one is not. This is cheap art, something which can be very easily spoofed and duplicated, it is a joke!!! It also makes easier for non-genuine Microsoft software sellers to stick these ugly rectangles everywhere. The Windows logo just became easier to clone.
I prefer this one
www.flickr.com/.../photostream
Echoing the comments about the ® and the ™. Get rid of them. They're clutter.
I know your lawyers say you need them, but they're wrong. For proof: go to apple.com. Do you see a trademark symbol next to their logo? Do you see a registration mark next to any mention of "iPhone"? Browse around their site a bit. Do you see trademark or registration symbols *anywhere*?
This is a bad joke right? The founding fathers of the International Typographic Style must be are rolling in their graves.
1. look at the sheer length of the logo
2. you have two point perspective on the graphic
3. you have one point perspective on the text
4. you have a graphic + text + numerical
5. there's right angular edges on the graphic and rounded edges on the numerical
6. The i in the windows text has a dot that;s floated away from any sense of balance
7. the dot in the i is a circle instead of oval like the O or inverted spaces in the 8
8 all 3 elements of the logo look like islands among themselves instead of 1 cohesive logo.
Redesign?
More like a step back
This logo is an INSULT to graphic designers like Paul rand who started the international typographic style and an even bigger insult to the creator of the metro UI.
How could you allow such a logo with absolutely no innovation or even the hint of innovation to be selected as the windows logo. You're killing your own legacy...
Ugh, really sad, I was hoping with the development of metro UI Microsoft finally realized the significance of innovative design but apparently that's not the case when something as shitty as this gets picked up.
Whatever design process you guys worked on, I would have ripped it apart and thrown it to the dogs because A step that isn't forward is always a step back, and this most certainly isn't a logo that takes the game 1 step forward like metro ui did.
i would love it if its on the other side
Sadly, I am not a fan of the new logo at all.
I agree about the use of colors. I'm happy to see a window instead of a flag, but the red blue green and yellow have got to stick around. They're classic and timeless. Plus, they reflect the new user interface now more than ever. The colors have never been so relevant. Don't take them away.
+1 to DjiXas recommendation of www.flickr.com/.../photostream with the traditional colors which is modern but maintains brand recognition.
i prefer windows 7 logo blue red green yellow
This is a bad joke right? The founding fathers of the International Typographic Style must be rolling in their graves.
1. Look at the sheer length of the logo, that's the first fail right there.
2. You have two point perspective on the graphic
3. You have one point perspective on the text
4. You have a graphic + text + numerical
5. There's right angular edges on the graphic and rounded edges on the numerical
7. The dot in the i is a circle instead of oval like the O or inverted spaces in the 8
8. All 3 elements of the logo look like islands among themselves instead of 1 cohesive logo.
Whatever design process you guys worked on, I would have ripped it apart and thrown it to the dogs.
Because a step that isn't forward is always a step back, and this logo most certainly isn't a step forward like metro ui is.
I hope someone at a high up position reads this because whoever's approved this has no intention of or understanding of what innovation means.
Eu acho que a microsoft está regredindo com a marca Windows, e poderia estar indo para um design 4D, mas esta voltando para um 2D?
The new logo is very nice, but I really like the Windows 1.0 logo.
It was clean, simple, and ahead of its time.
It could have easily been used for Windows 8.
Not only does it blend with the Metro aesthetic, but it also reminds me of a smartcard contact design.
Asymmetrical, yes, but definitely classic, and authentically digital. It even looks nice with the corners squared, but probably more identifiable if kept rounded.
Kudos to its designer for providing the foundation upon which the new logo builds.
This looks horribly bland, sterile, generic - something you'd find on a conformist iProduct. At least give it its colors back.
Greece called, they want their flag back.
kinda looks a lot like the sweden flag now, colors (or lack there of) very metro, not very "Windows" at all
anything can be reimagined, but the question is *does* this need to be reimagined? in your BUILD talk, you spoke of yesterday's technology... yesterday's aesthetic...
I believe the Windows logo as it exists on Windows Phone Mango and the (Win 8) Developer Preview is sufficiently Metro style. there was no *need* to change it...
I really like Metro style, but I think its implementation so far has been too rigid. I hope this is just a case of "bending the stick" in an attempt to establish a new direction. once Metro style has become entrenched then maybe MS will loosen up a bit and accept things like *subtle* gradients and limited use of modernized iconography a la The Verge's logo for their Microsoft forum:
cdn0.sbnation.com/.../microsoft.png
It looks like you handed it to a 3 year old with a ruler and a crayon. Its not really nice to look at and isnt easy on the eyes. Your windows 8 logo is much nicer. At this point im not really liking whats been happening with the development with Windows 8. Ill be sticking with windows 7 for a long time...
It looks like somebody opened Photoshop, wrote "Windows 8", added four rectangles and transformed them with the perspective tool. I'm sure there went a lot of research into that logo but the result is horrible. The WP7.5 logo on the other hand combines the metro look with the old flag perfectly, creating a modern looking and recognizable logo.
Do not like.
ugly, plain, nordic countries flag come to mind (they'll be happy there), the perspective depth almost hurts my eyes, hopefully millions weren't spent on this...
Just to clarify, i meant your ORIGINAL windows 8 logo was much nicer, than this new one. It looks like you took someone's lunch money (2$ ? ) and invested it in this new logo. Bad form, bad form indeed.
Gradients on metro ui is a bad idea and will ruin metro ui.
Wow, someone let the creative folks a bit to loose. You guys allowed the legal team attack with "™" and "®" but it seems like the marketing department had the least say. If anything, I feel that this logo's awkardness is an indication of Microsoft's intention to reduce the Windows logo's use across Microsoft products (e.g. Windows Phone start button, PC keyboard keys, etc.) because I just can't picture the "window" on its own (i.e. it can look like two shoeprints, two exclamation marks, or even...a nation's flag).
The logo is great guys!! I love the fact that it is a single color, which makes it easy to adapt to any of the user-selected color themes in Windows 8. Looking forward to PCs, Ultrabooks, Slates and Phones to have Windows 8 and this logo on them!!
It's great just cuz of single color? seriously?
Even though I have a Windows Phone and get the whole metro/Swiss angle, this is just awful to me. I hate that shade of blue and do not like the perspective. Lose the stupid TM, R, etc. too.
Interesting change of colors noticed when the lid (of notebook) is pushed or lowered.
Unfortunately, it would take years for users to become used to the completely different logo (thanks to the presence of the 'flag' on keyboards/ mobile devices).
Well, I guess it will grow on me, though I'll miss the colors. The old logo was getting a bit long in the tooth, but this does seem a little bland. Now we just need a replacement for Aero...
It is really very fitting that you are returning to the Windows 1.0 logo, seeing as you're dropping the entire idea of overlapping windows. But then, why not change the name as well? Windows won't have any windows soon, anyway... The only serious issue I have with Windows 8 is this stupid idea of dropping overlapping windows. Why do you think I use a 24" monitor? - and a mouse and keyboard!
Its a bit dull without color, should have retained the original colors which adds more visual appeal
Your logo is out of perspective! Fixed it for you: blog.tarng.com/.../the-new-windows-logo-is-out-of-perspective
When you start designing something with a wrong estimation, the design solution will be wrong as well.
The old logo never was a flag but a moving window! And it reflected perfectly the new idea of "Live Tiles" — Tiles in motion. I really thought that the idea for Live Tiles was inspired by the Windows logo. Maybe I was wrong.
Now, with Windows 8, while you kill the idea of overlapping windows in the Metro environment, you come with a logo that doesn't look like square tiles but a window? But this time it *does* look like a flag! At the same time, you kill one of the strongest brands. People always remembered that moving shape to be Windows because Windows 1 and 2 weren't really successful.
And I also think that this perspective logo doesn't work on hardware buttons. It is also too easy to re-create. Even a very minimalistic logo shouldn't be simple shaped, IMHO.
Why do you take such a huge risk? Seriously. Almost every keyboard has the Windows logo printed on, well over one billion times. And you kill it?
BTW, the logo on the large image is stretched! Fire the guy who did that! Please! Yeah, it's extremely difficult that you have to hold down the Ctrl key when you want to re-size things in Adobe CS ... *sigh
More people dislike the logo than like it. Good job self destructing yourself Microsoft. This is what happens when you have people who don't know their jobs selecting things they shouldn't be in the first place.
This needed a change. I Love it! but I agree with others and think that the 'TM' and the 'R' should not be there.
I realize 2012
is the end of
... Windows
if Microsoft are consistent,
they must change
the product name
to Microsoft metro
Looks good. Just wish you had kept some of the original colours, like so;
s16.postimage.org/r8p3b6pt1/Win8_Logo.png
This looks Flat, colorless, does not represent metro and is less a logo than a word--its not something I would want on a tee-shirt, Hat, button on keyboard, logo on a laptop. ..it snores..like the 1950's in Idaho--go with multiple colors on the window--reduce the size of the word---The logo is the Window--not the word-----its sad
Oops, my link didn't work, here it is again:
s16.postimage.org/.../Win8_Logo.png
Enter the armchair critics. Some good ideas to be sure, but I'm willing to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt here.
Does the "window" concept still apply to the new "metrified" Windows 8 interface? I think the new Windows doesn't allow you to use windows anymore.
Oh my goodness. The Windows 1.0 logo is incredible.
As an ardent Mac user, I think this logo redesign is amazing O_o
I took 10 minutes to redesign 4 iterations for a proper redesign for the Windows Metro logo:
dl.dropbox.com/.../windowsMetro-logo.jpg
You're welcome.
MSFT, please let me know if you need my PayPal info to pay me royalties to use this in your release.
I see what you're trying to do with the logo, but I believe it's incomplete. Instead of logo being monochrome, add the 4 colors back. That way it resembles the LIVE TILES that are the cornerstone of Windows 8.
I can try to sugar coated but it just straight-out SUCKS! I see 3 elements lined up horizontally, they don't even compliment each other.. The first Windows logo is 100x better than this.. No wonder everyone with a design program thinks they're a designer these days..
Anyone can come up with a logo as lame and weak as this one..
Maybe it's the same designer who "tried" to redesigned the GAP logo..
Not cool.
I do not like the new logo. I think the Win7 logo, when flattened, would have worked better and would have been more recognizable.
The other issue is none of the live tiles tilt as much as the logo does.
I just have a question will this new logo make it way to Consumer Preview. We want to test to see how it feels like for real.
The new logo was terrible without the traditional colors.
The interface Metro does not have a single color on Windows 8.
Why not put colors?!
The Windows colors (red, green, blue and yellow) are universal.
If you have these colors in any logo, anywhere in the world, consumers will know that this product is Windows.
If you take based on this picture, made by a DeviantArt, the Windows logo would be much better: metroui.deviantart.com/.../Windows-Apps-285262419 (look to the left of the image).
The Windows 8 was really amazing, butting heads with other operating systems that are judged best. But this logo was the worst thing I've ever seen.
I hope that by the final version of Windows 8, the logo is changed for the better (or return a flag to be colored).
Robson
Personally, I disliked the telly-tubby (XP) fad, loved the Aero fad and very much look forward to the Metro fad passing us by. Yes it's good for tablets but not for the desktop and certainly not in the enterprise. I've been following the Building Windows 8 blog very closely and understand the thinking behind your ethod and design decisions... it just doesn't work for me. Roll on the post-Metro era!
It's terrible :(
I DeviousE's version much better!
Hi,
It's a good idea for a refresh. Personally, I am bothered with the perspective orientation, the proper flow indicates it should be horizontally reversed. Additionally, I have provided a suggestion of my own.
Thanks!
Guys... seriously consider OpticShape's interpretation... both of them. PLEASE!
Corelement raises a number of really good points.
Overall, to me, it just doesn't seem like it says very much, and it doesn't seem like it's a coherent whole to me. Relative to the earlier logos, it seems like an attempt to be simpler while also being more sophisticated, but it doesn't seem like it succeeds at being simple, and the more you study the details, the less sophisticated it seems.
Sorry, I want to like it. But I just don't.
This is something I sure as hell don't want to have on either a T-shirt, Homepage, Laptop or Tablet of mine. Why don't you use the nice Windows Phone Logo?
So, this is now a windows replacement company? I ask because that is what this logo connotes to me: actual windows in my house.
I'm amazed at anyone in awe of this simplistic, meh-inspiring logo. Design regression, by decades.
What you have now, in Windows 7, looks wonderful. Yes, actually. What fudge with a good thing?
Generally, when people design logos, they try to make something unique that can be immediately identified with something.
The old Windows logo did that well. It has brand awareness and a distinct shape. When people see the old logo, they immediately think Windows.
This is literally 4 oblong rectangles placed in a grid and perspective-distorted in Photoshop. It's AWFUL.
Please don't get rid of the previous branding of all Windows-focused products (including hardware peripherals, the Windows Phones, etc) in a misguided attempt to be more modern.
Design for design's sake is always bad, and this logo is a particularly bad example of that.
(remember GAP?)
To me it looks like something IBM would have designed in the late 70's
This new logo is "modern" in the sense that it must have been designed in the decades-past Modern Age.
How about something contemporary, like the Windows 7 logo?
Ugh, I really can't believe I'm looking at this -- Am I having a bad dream? Seriously -- this is the stuff of design nightmares.
such a revolting feeling to have been so extremely excited about windows 8 and windows phone all this time, and suddenly find this absolute let down of a logo.
"you are windows. why are you a flag?" she says.
by that logic. "you don't have windows anymore, why are you called windows?" thank you very much for your genius, microsoft and pentagram. you keep the silly name for brand recognition yet you redesign the logo as a cheap knock-off.
this feels even more of a marketing catastrophe than the name of windows phone, which is confusing every human being since 2010.
i could go on. it's so sad. the proportions are off. the symmetry of the old one was crucial for it looking good on the hardware button all win 8 tables are required to have. the lame perspective is only seen in fraction of a second transitions in the OS. the position in relation to the wordmark is awkward. etc.
you were not a damn flag microsoft! not any more than nike is a swoosh or audi four rings. there's nothing wrong with abstract iconic logos!!!
FAIL
Fill it with Yellow so it becomes PURE Swedish :)
www.google-kai.com/windows-8-logo-needs-yellow-to-become-swedish.html
Looks like majority of the people not only dislike it, they hate it =\
My goodness! How could you! The flag was symmetrical. Eyes go lopsided to see this one properly. :D
I just hope you will eventually fill it with colour.
Remove the perspective.
Keep it simple and 2D, the Metro way.
Other than that, it's great.
Wow, that's rather terrible.
Why talk about "Swiss design" and then use an awkward looking perspective, that at best breaks the flow the entire logo. Then add the typical "TM" and "copyright" clutter that has slowly become a running gag when it comes to Microsoft's unfocused and cluttered brand identity.
This looks like the result of someone hiring his 16 year old cousin to design a logo for a small Swedish travel agency.
If you have to throw out brand identity over board like that, at least do it for something timeless and iconic - not for something that in five years time will be as fondly remembered as Windows ME.
I have to agree on your assessment of the Windows 1.0 logo, though ... it is, in fact classic and timeless. So, yeah, I understand your approach and where you are coming from, I just really don't like the end result - somewhere along he line someone screwed up massively.
Microsoft: you have officially lost the plot. Metro and now this? You are committing commercial suicide. Fire your entire design team, please.
if you are interested, these are the comments from the design community. www.underconsideration.com/.../with_windows_like_these_who_needs_enemies.php
it's a flop microsoft, deal with it. please react in time, not 3 years later.
Microsoft went color blind and not only that they forgot gradients, shadow, glow and the symbolic flag with its symbolic colours red, yellow, blue and green.
The flag will be greatly missed. Microsoft hit the self destruct button.
The level of self-congratulation for a sub-par result is nauseating.
Microsoft you're doing it wrong! You shouldn't chage the logo principals. The flag shape is iconic. People know it's windows by it's logo shape.
I think you don't know the meaning of a good logo. A good logo is something that make a stand and lives forever.
This redesign is by far a failure.
Using this quote "Paula asked us a simple question, “your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?” "
I now ask back Paula, if windows 8 is about metro, not windows anymore but panels, why did you draw a window?
And why did you fail to tell Microsoft, "You have an iconic brand on your hands, you shouldn't change the icon that everyone knows what it is just by looking at it. It's Windows. I have it on my Phone button, my keyboard."
What we all post here won't make a diference, I know that. Microsoft is to stuborn to listen to the world saying, your losing your most iconic grand?
PS: I would prefer you used the Windows Phone logo!
You guys really shouldn't even be talking about the design of anything. If you are Windows fans through and through, you obviously know very little about the world of design, typography, and iconography. So if you really feel you are deserving of a voice in anything graphic related, go buy yourself a Mac with OS X 10.7. Bafoons.
I'm looking at that. I'm like... jaw dropped. I'm astonished. I cannot believe my eyes. This is... unbelievable. You guys don't really get it. How can you - a company with 85% market share - come in front of your users with such a joke? This is an insult to the entire work you did so far. I know you own the "symbol". And the "windows" wordmark too! Still good you did not put any TM or R close to the 8
aaand some comments from the techies: www.engadget.com/.../microsoft-reveals-windows-8s-new-logo-it-s-a-window-not-a-fl
windows brand is synonymous with 4 multi colored tiles. which could be recognized from quite a distance on any hardware product. windows store logo slightly tilted suits well in this scenario. but, my guess MS didn't go that mutli color route is they wanted to avoid the conflict with google's chrome,G+,etc product logos which emulate old windows logos.
WOW Microsoft you guys need new designers, why can't you EVER get design right, why does your company suck so bad at design? I am just curious how you fail so hard on making a good looking logo or anything in general.
And this is not an "opinion" ask any serious designer and he will tell you this is pure crap, I am a designer my self and I just don't see anything nice about this.
I like the WP7.5 flag-logo way better. WIthout the 3D-perspective.
the window opens, like the screen appears to flip open in windows phone, as if it were a window, to reveal what is inside, the next screen.
with brand logos, there is always a possible element of, the logo means i am a consumer of a standardized mass product. it is impersonal. one did not choose the logo oneself. the ability to change colors according to your selected back ground color is an unusual step. this means that the logo simply shows what the OS does, flip open windows (the tiles flip open like windows) to get you your stuff. but the logo becomes subsumed within your own personal style choice.
this feature (changing color) is brave for a huge brand like microsoft. msft is saying, "we are yours". not, "we are powerful, and you must love us"
What have been seen cannot be unseen. 8====D
Not sure how I feel about it. I kinda like it but I guess I've been used to older logos for so long that I need time for it to settle in a little more.
It's probably poor taste to do this but as a lifelong Windows user, I've produced a wallpaper or sorts in anticipation the Windows 8 Consumer Preview - call it unofficial.
lordreserei.deviantart.com/.../Windows-8-Unofficial-Wallpaper-285269982
if you change a file name extension, the file might become unusable. are you sure you want to change it? yes.
dang.
stupid things like this that have plagued every version of windows ever made. where is the option to remember a simple decision? set defaults, offer ways to change them later. eesh.
oh, and please fix the thumbs.db bug. unable to blah, try again? cancel? ugh.
i could care less what the logo is going to look like or how airbrushed the ui is going to look - these are nothing more than sales gimmicks. functionality is more important. it's no different than the decade old bug in outlook (stand-alone without exchange) where messages are hopelessly trapped forever in the outbox.
i'm a windows 7 fan, but i think i'm heading back to linux if it doesn't get better.
#fixit
I like the new logo indeed. It resembles a lot the old 1.0 one. Another fact I like from it is that besides being more like a window, you can see the metro style tiles on it.
I know its a big change, its pros and cons, but I really like it ;)
Nice logo - very clean and elegant! However I think the kerning on the word "Windows" is a bit off - the W and i are too close together compared to the other letters!
Wow, spot on! Love how it reflects both Microsofts new design paradigm and at the same time grasps the roots of the WIndows OS, Hats of to Pentagram!
Nice. Move the tiles/windows to the right side of "Windows 8", and it'll look much more inviting. Also change the dot for the "i" into a square.
Look at the meta data of this new image...
Adobe Photoshop CS5 Macintosh
I guess even MS uses Mac. :D
I do really like the idea, but at the same time I agree with some of the more intelligent comments around lack of symmetry and forced perspective. As a result, I was kinda blown away by OpticShape's reinterpretation - it's fresh, funky and encapsulates the same design principles mentioned in the post but addresses many of the visual shortcomings. Too bad the chances of that being considered are likely nil at this point.
Having been part of the Windows team for many years, I am saddened to see that the new logo is monochrome. I agree with the flat, Metro-styling.
Ok, the new logo isn't that bad, but, I feel I need to agree with many of the others. The "flag" as we know it has created a very recognizable brand, even though we're talking about windows as opposed to flags.
I agree wih coreelement--this logo does seem to violate metro design philosophy.
While I like OpticShape's interpretation, it violates the metro design philosophy. It is really creative and cool looking--good job; just not right for Windows 8.
I like other's coments about keeping the flag colors. I saw some interesting designs but they still violate the metro design philosophy--too many colors. Metro is about simplicity--being able to glance at something and immediately know what it means, what it is, etc. They were attractive logos in their own rite, though.
I strongly agree with a lot of other peple that you should have kept the Windows Phone logo and adapted it for Windows 8. It keeps the "flag" and all of its association with the brand of Windows, yet, it's flat, representing a tile, which is central to the Windows 8 launch screen, and in doing all of this, keeps with the metro design philosophy. It's a simple two color logo and is extremely recognizable at a quick glance. I guess the major con in using this logo, then, is the inability to differentiate between Windows Phone and Windows 8.
I guess the best compromise here, would be to lose the perspective placed on the window/flag in the Windows 8 logo. It would then be similar enough to the Window Phone style logo, keeping with the metro design philosophy, yet different enough to provide differentiated brand recognition between the two products.
Respectfully submitted,
CS
I think that this new revamped logo is amazing.
However, I think that the windows colors (red, green, blue and yellow) should remain. That way the logo won't loose all the roots with it's predecessors.
The DeviousE version is awesome. The official one is just acceptable. I at least hope the logo is animated...
As a designer I have some minor issues with this logo:
1. The "window" element feels like an island unto itself rather than associated with the wordmark. My right brain is crying out for that to be to the right of the lettering.
2. The dot on the "i" sticks up above the top line of the "W" and "d" for no apparent reason. I want that to be aligned properly.
3. The dot on the "i" is a circle, and I feel it should be slightly oval-shaped to mirror the negative space in the "8" (it's a subtle thing, true, but it's a nearly subconscious way to help tie it all together).
4. The "window" element is boring. Windows has long made use of the Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow blocks in the logo, and the "Metro UI" does actually use multi-colored blocks, so there is no good design reason I can see to drop color completely.
5. The "window" element is slightly out of scale with the wordmark. The "far" end of the perspective on the window should be the same height as the "8" (again to help tie it all together).
6. My last point is a legal concern (if I were hired to design this logo, that is) regarding the fact the "window" element on it's own is a "simple geometric shape." Typically the USPTO will not allow simple geometric shapes to be registered as trademarks since they are not distinctive enough. The same rule applies to copyrighting designs. Considering the "window" element WILL be used by itself, for example on computer keyboards for the ubiquitous "Windows Key," this potential legal issue with trademarking it seems an odd point to ignore.
My reworking of it: 4.bp.blogspot.com/.../windows-8-logo-big.png
I'm not sure about this new design. I've only known the "flag" logo which looks more like a window than this. Maybe after a while it will grow on me.
I think the logo is very well done and thought out. I know you all took a while with this decision and I think it looks pretty good. Hopefully you use the logo in some kind of cool way. Maybe on startup before the metro tiles come up you show the logo and some kind of whoosh of tiles sweep in. Just a suggestion. Also this guy made a great alternative that I think you should look at and maybe consider. OpticShape alturl.com/55cd8.
To be honest, the logo I have liked the most was the white colored XP logo, used during the first LongHorn versions
Paula asked us a simple question, “your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?” Dear Paula, FYI, you just ripped off the Greek flag on your new windows 8 logo design
What a dramatic disaster... You haven't even kept the "four colours" I have known since I can very remember with the first PC I have ever used that had 3.11 on it. You tried to make the new logo reassemle a window again and unify it with the Metro interface? Well, in case you haven't noticed... the Metro style... does not... use... "windows" in its GUI AT ALL! It's completely pointless, confusing and misleading in my opinion.
beautiful logo but lack a little color, metro is colorful!!!
look at this:
2.bp.blogspot.com/.../Win8_logo.jpg
For the most part, I actually like it. However, the logo is too flat and I don't like the fact that the window pane design abandons the four traditional colors. I think the words "Windows 8" should be in royal blue and that the four panes should use the traditional red, green, blue, and yellow colors with a gradient.
The Start Screen uses gradients - why shouldn't the logo?
Why not going the extra mile and choosing a Svastika logo?
It's a great symbol in India, symbolizing good health and fortune. Quite the same values that Windows embrace.
Ok, I love Metro. And cleaning up the Windows Brand is a must. But this logo is bad. The flattened version of the Win7 logo is great. Like the one on Windows Phone 7. This new one just feels cheap and the way the perspective is done, it feels awkward and does not float will in context of other elements. Also, the way the perspective is done, it looks like it is rectangular, it would be better if it was was a square (in perspective).
If you did this logo internally, fail. If you out sourced it, demand a refund.
This feels like that Gap Logo fiasco all over again. Disappointed. :(
at perspective I've seen it before ... it's the transition that make the METRO apps when opened, is that the diagonal transition! I Like!!!
If it's not supposed to be a flag how come it looks so much like Finlands?
en.wikipedia.org/.../Flag_of_Finland
Adding another comment because this just reallllly frustrates me. When i first saw this leaked, I thought it was a joke because it was so bad and cheesy looking. Now I want to vomit because its true.
The single color flag logo is PERFECT. The flag is established and clean when flattened to single color. It also looks more like the tiles because they are square and not the dull rectangular looking things. And what the heck is with the perspective? How does that fit in with Metro more than the flag?
The Windows Phone (7.5) with the flag in a square is Classic with a Metro twist. It keeps branding recognition while applying it to the new Metro style.
If I were buying a computer and saw this new logo on it, I would think its some cheap rip-off.
UGH, I am so excited for Windows 8 and Metro, but this is like a giant thorn in my ass. Yuck, please put this beast to sleep.
I like the Microsoft Store logo the best.
This logo seems a bit drab and colorless. I like the Window rectangle, but the lack of color is not great. Maybe something in between the Microsoft Store logo and this would be really good.
If you're writing professionally for one of the most prominent companies in the world, you should probably learn the difference between "compliment" and "complement."
Thank you for the kind words, after 15 years in logo design, these kind of words and feelings are still the greatest motivator. I am simply supporting my criticism to the current logo.
@Blakatak: Actually, given that this is an official Windows blog, chances are that they would at least notice the alternatives, should they in fact consider the designs posted as a response. Politics might hinder this process but that's another story, for another day and is their problem :)
Put the logo after the words "WINDOWS 8" !!!!!!!!
It looks so much better in that order:
farm8.staticflickr.com/.../6893556493_492a46f5b8_z.jpg
^This makes much more sense. Come on guys!
The circle over the letter "i" feels wrong too. Look at it with a rectangle instead of a dot:
farm8.staticflickr.com/.../6893599081_4df2f5f4e1_z.jpg
^Makes more sense to me.
The original windows logo is surprisingly modern.... I think it looks great. It would have been awesome to use that same staggered design, but with metro tweaks.... if this is the final logo... I agree the window logo should come after the text, or the aspect should be changed so the left side of the windows is closer than the right, effectively turning the window the other way... no matter what, facing the text.
OMG, this is the worst logo ever. No need to put there a ™ and ®, because nobody ever will steal this ugly piece of MS Paint result. I would not take it for free. Steve Jobs was right, Microsoft has really no taste. This is not Windows 8, this is Windows 0.0. I guess it will be good 3 versions from now, so maybe starting with Windows 3, ehh I meant Windows 11.
Really disappointing! The new direction and interface is great but this logo is not! It has nothing to do with windows or metro. The windows phone Mango logo would be just perfect.
The idea is nice and clean, however the departure from the traditional logo is already too severe.
I understand and support the shape change to an actual square window. I have been advocating that for many years now. However, it still needs to retain the old colour scheme or else existing customers won't make the connection to existing Windows Products and may be skeptical. (Think original blackberry and blueberry counterfeits)
Me personally, i think the angle looks stupid. It should be... needs to be flat, with the traditional 4 colours of windows logos of yore yet retaining the metro design aesthetic.
Just think about it... Metro tiles are flat, NOT angled!!
There will be more flexibility with marketing and design with a flat logo than an angled one as well.
Windows 1 logo is far better from that. My proposal i44.tinypic.com/ra6h3m.jpg

I like this for the most part, but I think I might agree about the lack of color. We're simplifying the UI by removing unnecessary chrome (and so the removal of flourish from the logo here), but we aren't removing color from the OS - rather, we are celebrating it by using it to help distinguish various tiles, so why remove color from the logo. The only argument for the color it is here is as a revival of the logo for 1.0, which is almost enough to push me back to liking this logo, but not quite enough. Add the colors - pretty sure the majority of your users are smart enough to recognize that you were using them over a decade before Google was even founded.
and this is nice too i44.tinypic.com/1huhcw.jpg

I'm wondering how much did Microsoft pay for the logo. I hope not much.
There are so many things wrong about it, it just feels like it was made by some amateur - as a professional designer I would be ashamed to take money for something so faulty.
I'm all in for OffWorld's design. 4.bp.blogspot.com/.../windows-8-logo-big.png
Forget metro ant think about recursion
I think the Windows 7 logo was a whole lot more colorful and better overall. If you want something that looks like a window, how about taking the windows 1.0 logo and adding the familiar red, green, blue, yellow colors to it, in a more modern fashion? And besides, just because this is Windows doesn't necessarily mean the logo has to look like a Window... if it isn't broken, you do NOT have to break it!
I like it. It's cool. FINALLY.
I just had to add this when I saw it...super funny!
http://i.imgur.com/vd2WA.jpg
So Pentagram and Windows team collectively dumped a superior Metro Windows logo design of Windows Phone 7.5. Nice to see Windows taking hints in its UI from a modern design but the logo is not Metro and neither has has it any continuity.
After 20 or so years, we come full circle back to the origin. You guys had it right all along from the beginning.
I think tweaking the text to use a lighter weight on the "8" would make it look better! :)
Great, simple, consisten with the new design. Love it!!!
this is a joke, right ? please say it is..
oh man. really "hate" it.
Hello there Metrosoft...
well what can i say more that hasn't been already said.
Epic fail trully xD
There 2 guys that summed it up correctly , the one guy that spoke about the fathers of typography rolling over in the grave. And the other guy that pointed out that you've been had silently by the Pentagram company.
Sorry to bust your bubble, but you've been had big time, can only imagine what a fun those guys had when collecting their paycheck.
As mentioned also by another , a better choice would even be to go Retro (windows 1 logo) instead of this nu-Metro'ish spin-off, that looks like nothing really.
I'm also not a fan of the new logo. Please strongly consider both of the proposals that OpticShape has put forth in this thread.
Even Windows 1.0 logo looks better, sorry guys, this is not about habits or "it is just because you are not used to it right now" thing. 1. It's not about metro, nor perspective is good.. 2. Looks like Swiss flag and serious similiarity to religious symbols.
NONSENSE! OH... NO!!
I liked the flag logo(from 3.1 to 2000)
And the new XP logo...It's OK
VISTA&7.. very good ! Vivid logo!
But.. 8.. what the is?
Yeah, This is simple.
I see the identity of WIN's disappearing
MS guys please let the logo back (I want 7 logo!)
Or I& many users will stick to 7 over 13 years!
Upgrading is useless
I actually like it!
It still looks like a window and represents the metro UI pretty well. The slant gives it depth and an "interactivity" feeling to it.
It could be improved upon though as a colleague pointed out, the size of the white bars probably should change with the perspective.
If anyone thinks they could do better, just for fun, we posted a contest on 99designs here: 99designs.ca/.../redesign-microsoft-windows-logo-fun-guaranteed-contest-archon-122050 It was just posted but should get some interesting entries shortly.
Cheers,
Matt
@nrg:
Loved reading your post, speaks my mind as well.
Also I'm pretty sure those designer guys are still rolling over their office's floor with the paycheck unable to stop laughing xD
I think its very plain, not much fun. And I also somewhat question the logic behind it. After all; the old 'RGB-Y' logo has always been a phenomenon since Windows 3.1, it even went as deep that mere end users would still recognize the logo as being associated with Microsoft Windows. Why would you want to turn away from such an impressive legacy?
Change just for the sake of change isn't always the best of ideas.
Presumably your don't feel able to tamper much with Segoe, but I'd prefer a slightly reduced x-height (with a lower dot on 'i') and less contrast on 'n' and 'd'. I do welcome the departure from the mock-Helvetica Thin uses of Segoe I've seen in previous Metro designs, though the spacing may still be just a touch tight.
The window's tapering horizontal bar suffers on an LCD monitor, and, to my eye, the bars are too thin and the outer corners too sharp.
Principal Director of User Experience for Windows, sorry, which user experience led you to change it to cross style religious symbol like Sweden flag?
I actually think the first Windows 1.0 logo is the absolutely most beautiful.
Go with OpticShape's take on the logo. DO IT.
Ok seriously, this took me like 2 min in Photoshop and I might be biased because I did it, but I think it's not worse than what this Pentagram Woman made.
Won't you give me a few million $ for my Work too, Microsoft? I mean it was an incredible effort to do this.

Terrible new logo... wrong on so many levels
The current WP7 logo is just FINE!! <--- take a look at my avatar
i love metro and love it a lot but im sorry i don't like the new logo to be honest if you are going to be sold color then i think this logo look better http://i.imgur.com/pUYIs.jpg
First time I saw it I was just floating at google+ and thought 'no, they're talking bullshit, it is fanmade'. The post did not mention this official post. After further search I finally found this article thanks to 'similar images' feature in the web search.
good Lord, whattachange!
I must say, perspective and font are sexy, but i'd rather go with the windows 3.1 different size windows logo.
My musings (didn't know how to skew the 8 in perspective to the tiles - I suck at gfx!)
www.wpdownunder.com/.../Windows8LogoMusings.png
As a kid I liked building symmetrical lego spaceships obviously :D
I meant 'windows 1', not '3.1' in my first comment. you could add 'edit comment' feature, couldn't u? it's ok to keep our original comments for yourselves.
I definitely like the new simplified look. However, the window perspective will take some getting used to and the removal of the logo's trademark vibrant colors is a loss. A more measured approach that's similar the Microsoft Store logo could work well and prove more flexible... http://bit.ly/win8lgo
say...
*metro is actually colorful. I hope this is (for not causing worse loss of identity) a B&W matrix.
*this looks like cooliris web browser extension. metro is flat.
also...
smartphones are ok. they are now as tough as netbooks and here come tablets.
improving programming booting & everything else is cool (and necessary), but making our i7 1TB PCs look like a silly Lumia 800 is really risky for u. users ain't gonna like it -- but you know they'll swallow it by the years.
HAY GUYZ, CHEK OUT MY RLY GUD LOGO! img820.imageshack.us/.../windows8bestevar.jpg
Windows 8 Metro is a breathtaking step backward. Microsoft should rename the operaing system "Microsoft Window", because that's what it is: a single-window system. The tiled Windows harken back to Windows 1.
Hey Microsoft, why not go back to monospaced fonts while you're at it?
It speaks volumes that serious apps like Office and Visual Studio will only run in desktop mode.
I see what they going with. But add color in the plains of each of the windows. But the text was cool thought. And now Just show us the new GAMES FOR WINDOWS LIVE new loglo will be with windows 8. And will the there be LIVE surport in the bu ndle games with WINDOWS 8.

While I get the direction and background for the new logo (it really makes sense)... I feel the logo is poorly executed and is not as amazing as the current icon. The current Windows logo is ICONIC, everyone knows it, and it's everywhere... while yes, it's waved like a flag, it is still a WINDOW. I personally thinking using the regular one-colour 'flag' windows icon is beautiful alone. This new logo doesn't look as 'inviting' or 'cool' as the 'flag' window icon, in fact the new icon looks too 'corporate' and 'boring'. The current one-colour window is fun and inviting.
The Windows Phone icon is great and fits well in my opinion (even though I think the name needs to be shorter -- such as WinPhone). I love my winphone! :)
Also, as someone else pointed out another blog... the new logo can be easily made fun of (8===D).... and I don't think the Windows brand needs anymore bad press.
Looking forward to Windows 8 and the beautiful metro interface!
I wasn't a fan of Steve Jobs, but there's a video of him saying something that is really accurate: that Microsoft has terrible taste. In every product that they put out there, some of the visuals are great, while some are horrible. An example of this is the contrast between the taskbar in Windows 7, which looks great, and the explorer windows, which look hideous, with that damn baby blue everywhere, especially in the command bar, which can't be changed unless you use third party software and hack the GUI. Another example are the Windows Live apps, which went from a rather nice design, Vista like, to the hideous early 80's design they have nowadays. And finally, we are greeted today with this abomination of a one color (and a pretty ugly color) minimalistic design that says nothing at all. Boring, ugly and pointless. Sure, it kinda looks like a Window, but what's the point? Does the design of the Windows OS logo need to look anything like a real window? No. Who cares if it used to look more like a flag before? Any of the previous logos look way better than this child drawing. And they hired a company for this? Heck, this looks like something a 10 year old designed.
I've been buying every single Windows release since 95, this will be the first time I don't. Windows 7 will stay with me fo several years to come. 7 is the new XP.
ugh i cant look at this logo anymore, so bad
I actually like the minimalistic and clean design. At first glance I was like 'wtf,' since it's quite different but it grows on you and you understand why this design makes sense. Something simple as the logo re-design shows how Microsoft is paying attention to details in it's product (Windows reimagined) from a branding standpoint.
Those saying it doesn't make sense since there are no "windows" in Windows 8 isn't really true. You have "panes" or "pivots" that you swipe. These are your Windows. Also you'll have your multitasking Windows on the regular desktop. Also, each rectangle being widescreen shows the fluidity of chromeless "windows." The perspective gives it a sense of movement (if you use Windows Phone, you'll know what I mean with the animations) and color is a nice personalization. If you still don't like it after a while, it's not the end of the world for petes sake!
Great job to the design team!
What this guy did, way better than the abomination Pentagram did. Pay that guy instead: www.flickr.com/.../photostream
my first impression was that maybe i missed something or i did not sleep enough.the new logo look so ugly that i could not take my eyes from it for a while. i am not a designer, i am a simple consumer so i believe i m not well prepared to make a professional judgement. than i read the post from @corelement and i said to myself that maybe there is a technical explanation for what i was feeling. Mister Moreau...Sam, my friend, from a client point of view...you did a very poor job! Paula Scher is expensive and famous. and also obsolete and too old for us ! you are not a simple window, Sam. you are not making something for a shed. you make something that move our world. so i guess even the flag represent what you do for us in a better way. Paula probably thinking of a fruit. if so, in terms of competitiveness, you are on the wrong track.
Opticshape's Design > Windows 1.0 > Windows 8
Please fix.
@sebaz i agree that one look way better
To Microsoft i hope you are reading the comments and decide to change the logo this is windows its No.1 Product globally it deserve a lot better logo than the one you posted windows logo represent Microsoft it should be Perfect same as Metro UI and not an ok logo please change it
"Microsoft" so bad to see this kind of work from SOFTWARE GIANT...its so BAD<<UGLY<<<We all don't have words to DEFINE ITS UGLINESS..As WINDOWS RE-IMAGINED PLEASE RE-DESIGNED WINDOWS 8 LOGO...
After 20 years of using Windows and 27 years of using Office products - you've got to be kidding. Microsoft needs to think outside the box. How about using an elliptical window design with different colors. At least have some continuity with before. The ongoing focus with blue is depressing. Reminds me too much of not seeing the sun from October through April during the first year when I lived in Seattle.
Paula should have asked you a simpler question: why do you dilute your brand with a half dozen different Windows logos? You want 2-D, Metro squares? Microsoft has a logo like that - it's on the Microsoft Store, and unlike this terrible job, it maintains continuity with the iconic quad-color flag of the last 20 years.
Way to give up brand recognition, Windows team. Good job.
Good Lord, who let the Marketing morons out of the bar? I haven't seen a less interesting logo since CP/M was released. Kill it now, please!!!!
Hey! Why don't you change the Windows logo everywhere on Windows.com and this blog? And another suggestion, you want to reimagine everything? Reimagine the name. Change that boring Windows 7 or 8 to a new type of name.
The logo makes sense. Clean and effective. Metro UI is unique. Fitting logo.
“your name is Windows. Why are you a brick wall?”
MS paid good money for this? They got short changed! The one-color logo is dull, dull, dull. That flat 'window' element seems to stand apart from the "Windows 8" element. I agree with others, ditch this while you can and consider buying OpticShape's logo designs (both are beautiful. Even the monochromatic them is much better than what your PR firm came up with!)
OpticShape's take on the logo:
It's bad. No, really. I've even signed up to say this. Broken composition, strange font choice. No future.
If you have to use this logo, consider the post by Tangerine considering perspective. (blog.tarng.com/.../the-new-windows-logo-is-out-of-perspective). I have to admit that correcting the perspective and correcting for square window panes instead of rectangular makes the logo work better (though I still like the idea of using a slightly darker shade of blue for two of the window pans (diagonal in relation to each other) with the same shade of blue for the number 8.
I agree with many here -- www.flickr.com/.../photostream that is much better. It ties in with the Microsoft retail store experience (I've been to three) and I immediately thought of the interconnection branding and the pleasing atmosphere of the store.
simply put, as it is the logo is boring. keep on working on it. particularly lighter blue shade is girlish. we want something profession. Also as some suggested consider revisiting you window. it just cannot portray the message.
By all means, please put the obnoxious colors and the wave back in. After all, this looks like it actually may have been designed by a professional rather than a middle school student.
A fresh New Start!! bUT,, don't go too Blue!! ;) :P :D
i am a big user of Microsoft products. but this logo .. yuck..terrible. you should fire your designer. I agree with this one www.flickr.com/.../photostream
i think the logo is looking like a flag much than before.
it would be easier to perceive like a window if it was set vertically.
And it would also be really an effective metaphor which shows that windows is standing up
New logo is similar to Windows Phone 7 logo and Metro GUI style. I hope you will stay in Metro style interface around Windows 8
Everyone can do it better.
Definitively hate it.... cold, no life...
hope you did not pay that too much... even a kid in kindergarden can do it....

is not the same, like on designer's site:
www.pentagram.com/.../PS_Windows8_550.jpg
That logo on Pentagram's site looks better for me, have thinner spaces between tiles, not so aggressive.
What do you think?
The more I look at this logo and the more it grows on me.
It really shows that Windows 8 will be a new experience unlike anything before.
And the light blue is like looking through a window and see the blue sky. You just want to dive in and profit of the weather.
Extremely clever design. Good job guys.
@deiruch - You honestly don't know that in 3D perspective objects appear smaller as they "move farther" hence one half is smaller than the other?
Nice logo. I really hope the rest of the desktop UI gets changed and simplified in order to blend with the other Metro parts. And most of all - I hope MS removes window borders and make windows look more Zune-like (the desktop app). I've tried it on a simple window and it looks better than with borders: warehouse.wh1sp.com/win8.jpg
I think removing the borders and allowing custom header colors will be very helpful for creating really beautiful applications.
Looking forward for the beta... :)

The shape is nice, but it missed the red/green/blue/yellow colors for the logo with black text.
Amazing how the look and feel has gone full circle to Windows 1. And yes, I do remember it. Cool as!
looks as ugly as the whole metro crap UI. Windows 8 is not my idea *thumb down*
If you rotate the picture 270 degree clockwise, the new Windows logo looks like a recycle bin.

the new logo is good. but I wouldn't stretch it so much. the window should be more compact ;)
Completely awful. Almost every internet mockup I've seen done by amateurs online is better than this.
This almost feels like 4 BSOD Blue screens of deaths logo in one for windows 8. This looks like a bad branding of the logo. I urge the Windows UX team to look into the image of BSOD and if the logo really represent away from it.
Long time Microsoft fan but the new logo is just abominable, amiss, atrocious, awful, bad news, beastly, blah, bottom out, abhorrent, atrocious, awful, bad, base, beastly, contemptible, cursed, despicable, disgusting, foul, grim, grody, gross, hairy, hateful, heinous, hellish, horrible, horrid, loathsome, lousy, nauseating, obnoxious, odious, offensive, repellent, reprehensible, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, rotten, sleazy*, stinking, terrible, vile, wretched, bummer, careless, cheap, cheesy, crappy, cruddy, crummy, defective, deficient, diddly, dissatisfactory, downer, dreadful, erroneous, fallacious, faulty, garbage, godawful, grody, gross, grungy, icky, imperfect, inadequate, incorrect, inferior, junky, lousy, not good, off, poor, raunchy, rough, sad, slipshod, stinking, substandard, synthetic, the pits, unacceptable, unsatisfactory, base, corrupt, criminal, delinquent, evil, iniquitous, mean, reprobate, sinful, vicious, vile, villainous, wicked, wrong, adverse, disagreeable, discouraged, discouraging, displeasing, distressed, gloomy, grim, melancholy, troubled, troubling, unfavorable, unfortunate, unhappy, unpleasant, awry, bad , confused, crooked, erring, erroneous, fallacious, false, faulty, flawed, foul, glitched up, haywire, imperfect, improper, inaccurate, inappropriate, incorrect, mistaken, out of order, sick, unfair, unlawful, unsuitable, untoward, alarming, astounding, awful, bad , daunting, dire, disheartening, dismaying, dreadful, fearful, formidable, frightening, frightful, ghastly, grim, grody, gross, harrowing, heavy, hideous, horrible, horrid, horrific, intimidating, mean, petrifying, scaring, shocking, terrible, terrifying, the end, unnerving, awful, bad , barbaric, beastly, desperate, diabolical, fiendish, flagrant, godawful, grody, gross, hairy, heinous, lousy, monstrous, nefarious, rotten, scandalous, shocking and villainous.

I love Vista & Windows XP logo, I love that newly designed logo too. This new logo of Windows 8 reflects the technology passion of Windows very effectively! Keep it up Windows :-)
The new windows logo reflects the metro style of windows 8, it a good choice by Microsoft to completely change the logo of Windows 8 as the old orb like logo is kind of odd to be used for the new metro style UI.
I like this logo...
Does anyone else feel their eye drawn down the "window" away from the wordmark? I find the direction of the perspective disconcerting.
I don't think it's possible to change the logo of such a widely recognized brand as Windows without ruffling some feathers. I believe that this is a much needed departure from the old logo, and is representative of the new design direction of Windows. It might take a little getting used to, but I am more than happy to be rid of the old flag which became a symbol of Microsoft's constant failure at producing a coherent, modern and clean design language until now.
Good luck with Windows 8!
wH1spEr -- I think I love you, man. This is a GORGEOUS mockup. Traditional desktop interface with Metro sensibility? YES PLEASE. warehouse.wh1sp.com/win8.jpg I still love Metro UI, and really want the option for the touch interface, but *this* more than the Aero-ish interface they've demoed says "next-gen Windows."
Petition Microsoft to change the God-awful #Windows 8 Logo

That new Win8 logo just looks like the Wii Sports logo.
I can say that I like the logo. However, it also reminds me of the Metro user interface which I find it very difficult to like.
I agree with simplicity and the urgency of modernization but what's the point of simplicity and modernization if they lack the charm, beauty and the representation. So, this new logo is simple and modern but it doesn't seem to have a spirit of the MS and utterly lack the beauty and representation. There has to be other better ideas than this one. It just looks a simple and modernized joke on MS.
The new design works - but is there any chance of getting our official colors back.
Either way it works with the new metro movement, and since we are all PC users the color(s) of the new logo will most likely change on our personal systems to reflect us as users.
Great job to the designers, and the MS Team, we are looking forward to the release of Windows 8.
- Powered by Windows.
I have to say I am a huge fan of the Metro redesign. But this logo has absolutely no aesthetic sides to it. The perspective of the image element, the spacing, the color.. I hope you consider this again.
I think OpticShapes solution is perfect for Windows 8, you should hire this guy!
Well, I love the Metro style, but if you really want to follow that concept I like this one better: www.flickr.com/.../set-72157629372372745
I couldn't help but copy/paste a bit: www.jimmyreek.nl/.../wind8logo.png

@ OpticShapes
I love your concept of the new logo with our official colors, I agree with chabuya's comment they either need to hire you or work with you in the future on new designs and branding.

Let Buddha guide your heart, my fellow Microsoft executives.
Yuck….!!! What a boring Logo is the new Windows 8 Logo is…!! I can't believe a team of people got paid to design that. With all the money and marketing groups they have on board, couldn’t they get one of them to create a logo better than that? Though Microsoft is aiming for simplicity, the original Windows 1.0 Logo was better than this…!! Microsoft, the new Windows Logo is too plain. I like multicolours & also bring back the Flag Design. Please…
PLEASE! I singed up for this blog to say that this logo should not be the image that Microsoft should show its main cash-cow. It has to look more modern, fluid, yet still very eye catching. I agree with OpticShape www.flickr.com/.../photostream this one would be the most appropriate.
I originally thought something along the lines of the Microsoft Store logo http://bit.ly/win8lgo would work well but now I'm definitely on board with @OpticShape's more playful approach.
The new logo isn't bad but personally I think it would be better if you made it 2D (like Metro) and added the traditional colours (Red, Green, Blue and Yellow).
I love but Metro but dislike the logo. I agree with OpticShape's second design:
Mais que logo feio hein microsoft?
That is not a window. It is the Shetland Islands flag.
New Windows logo is a cheap bad copy of the Shetland Flag. It was designed by Roy Grønneberg and Bill Adams in 1969
flagofarms.com
I understand that it's not a flag, but a window. And I truly believe that MOST people who see the current Windows icon today, they think it's a flag. With that said, why did you choose to add a perspective to the logo?
All of your other products (windows phone, xbox, visual studio, outlook, office 2010, etc...) MOST (if not ALL) of them use a flat 2D logo. This new Windows logo simply does NOT fit into their non-perspective counterparts, and it sticks out like a sore eye, unless this is intentional.
You know, the more I think about it, the less and less I like that Windows 8 logo. I acutally think the Windows 1.0 version is better.
No!!! Microsoft!!! It look so blah...and by 'blah', I mean dull. It looks way to simple for my taste. Also it needs a touch of different colors. Please reconsider your logo design guys!!!
don't fix something that ain't broken
Thank you for your support, really appreciate it as we all want a good logo for our favorite OS.

I don't like the logo. I prefer Windows 3.1 logo. In fact, Windows 8 is characterized for removing the windows from the UI.
Why you don't want to attract customers? Pentagram has really good designs, why did you get that one?
Wonder if Apple ever discussed the details about their logo! Are they so genius and confident about their design? or they aren't open to discussion?
If the Window had the current logo's (one seen in the start preview) colors it would look better i.cubeupload.com/cXOqhY.png
Please take a look at the comprehensive article I wrote on The Verge forums. I offer some examples as to how to implement a very Metro rebrand through all Microsoft's products and services.
www.theverge.com/.../the-real-missed-opportunity-integration-rebranding
This reminds me of the time NBC decided to get rid of their peacock logo. Their new design (a simple block-arrangement of "NBC") cost a small fortune...and yet, New, Bold, Classy, it was not. This new Windows logo is just about as bland and unimaginative.. .or, "humble," was it? (Humble? Microsoft? Now, there's a tilt in perspective!) So, what we have here is a new logo that's not a mark of great distinction. (A rather ironic icon, that.) Authentically digital, meaning "it" doesn't try to emulate faux-industrial design characteristics...like, you know, windows. (Certifiable!) Bottom line, it may have motion, but it doesn't move me, sorry...but, Good Luck with it, anyway!
c'mon guys, definitively reconsider it...
keep watching thins logo for hours... my eyes a attracted outside of the immage on the left by this perspective...

I honestly dislike 8 slightly more each time I hear about it. I want to like this logo but I really, really don't. :'( I attend an IT college and all of my friends and lecturers cringe when they hear 8 mentioned. Even more so than Vista. Vista being a forbidden word during class.
Unless it pulls off a spectacular transformation relatively soon, I'll be upgrading on release... to windows 7 Professional.
What a total failure, it's awful. I guess it's fitting though for an OS that will most likely bomb in the consumer market as much or even more so than Vista. I can see at least half of the people buying a new PC with Win 8 immediately "downgrading" to Win 7. The Metro is stupid, the ribbon in Explorer is even worse, and now we have a logo that looks like a Kindergartner with only one crayon in his box drew it. The best logo ever was the XP one.
Windows 8 feels like 2 different operating systems that have been thrown together.
Switching between the Metro Start-screen and Apps, and the Windows Desktop is jarring, confusing and a bad user experience.
I think a good logo for Windows 8 would be one that represents the level of visual consistency between Metro and the Desktop.
How is that modernized. It looks terrible. The color is terrible, especially, and the "window" logo is terrible. But when you completely destroy the start menu I guess that icon can't be used, right? Windows Vista had, by far, the best looking logo. You didn't even need text. The picture spoke for itself.
This is rubbish.
Quote: "I think a good logo for Windows 8 would be one that represents the level of visual consistency between Metro and the Desktop."
I almost passed out from laughter at that picture, cause it's so damn true. This windows release is such rubbish that I dunno what to say. They got so desperate to get into the mobile/tablet market that they completely destroyed the user experience of their own Desktop OS as a result. Seriously, has anyone at Microsoft even tried to use that Metro start screen on a laptop with a touchpad and no touch screen? Probably not.
These people are utter idiots. Apple must be smiling.
i would really like the new innovative concept of changing the logo..coz transformation is the rule of nature....go for tis..
Dear Sam Moreau,
As Principal Director of User Experience for Windows, after all those comments, it is NOW you really get "User Experiences" so that you can see why logo has to change. This is REAL user experience rather than people around you CLAPPING not to loose their jobs if they tell new logo clearly sucks.
@Boots actually Windows 8 looking i don't see anything confusing about windows 8 its easy to use and fast
wait for consumer review release day and try it
Remove the TM and R. The font needs changed or adjusted or something. The perspective is trash. I think you need to change it again.
That is the worst logo I have ever seen! Here is a few reasons:
1. Plain and boring: The logo has no colour and no shine. All lines are straight. Here's an idea for a much better logo:
www.geekpedia.com/.../vista-wow-windows-live-logo_256x256.png
If it isn't an good idea then just change the logo to a less plain, more colourful logo.
I know a great Windows 8 codename. It should be: Metro
Even if it is for your Metro, it is no where near a metro-like logo because the Metro tiles have colours. It would be alright if you put colour in the tiles.
Simplicity, Boldness, Authentically Digital, Lack of characteristic colors and a Personal touch. Here's my opinion tangentsky.wordpress.com/.../the-redesigned-windows-logo
I wrote for Windows Phone 7 - and I felt like my app had no soul. I used the phone for a month - it felt like I was in an impersonal train station. Stuff about me was definitely scrolling by but it didn't feel personal.
After a month of seriously using the phone I completely ditched it. Went online, learned objective C, and I am now writing for iphone. I feel like I have license to put in far homier design elements than in metro.
My iphone feels like home, it feels like mine. Not a cacophony of words and images about me.
I absolutely hate that windows is destroying its brand - it's very soul - by going metro.
This fits in very well with the "metro" theme. I understand the reason for the design and don't necessarily disagree with it but why did it have to be blue?
I think Sam Moreau said it best in the last paragraph of Windows 8 post #3 " when you change your color, the logo changes to reflect you. It is a “Personal” Computer after all".
So that's what I did; and I plan to do the same when the official release of Windows 8 comes out. - mymicrosoftwindows.files.wordpress.com/.../my-own-metro-style-windows-logo.png
I can't do without my colors, but I do like the metro style movement by Windows thus far.
- Powered by Windows
Dear Sam Moreau
Principal Director of User Experience for Windows
If you read this page, please notice the majority of the "users" you "direct" hate the logo making it a "bad" experience.
If you go ahead with this logo, you're going to get a lot of bad publicity (Which you are already if you have people who can see other websites loathing this logo made by an overpriced untalented group)
cdn4.digitaltrends.com/.../new-hp-logo.png look at this logo and look at your logo, how can Microsoft allow such a bad logo to destroy it's legacy???
I love metro and windows phone 7 but this logo gives me a headache and just plain no.
http://nooooooooooooooo.com/
@NoMetro
I am curious how does the iPhone give you the feeling of "soul" with an array of static icon as opposed to WP7? I don't see anything talks about "me" looking an the homepage of an iPhone. I'm confused by what you mean "soul."
I don't like it. I checked all the proposals here and almost all of them were 'juvenile' (I speak spanish, couldn't find a better word). The rest were good jokes. Is the government of Finland aware of Microsoft using their flag?
Now, seriously, the 2D cross over the perspective of whatever it is looks horrible. It doesn't look like a window, although it looks like something made in Power Point I don't think people will link that to the Windows brand...
Please tell us you were joking and this is just part of the viral marketing campaign you planned for the release of my next Windows!!
The logo is a very logic reflection of the metro design changes applied to Windows 8. What I don't like are the trademark thingies, they look a bit like fly droppings from a distance, and their display shouldn't be necessary with a logo of that magnitude. Just remove them, and perhaps move the tiles a bit closer to the wording as the optical space is a tad too wide in my humble opinion.
Strong and easy, it's also mac style... on the right way. big achievement, congrats.
KT is hungry.
Like I said for Aero environment, retail packaging, websites and everywhere else but the Start Screen, MS should use the colored logo with gradients. A user at PCWorld seems to have created just that with the colors gotten absolutely spot on and see how beautiful it looks:
forums.pcworld.com/.../av-250035.png (Small)
forums.pcworld.com/.../photo-250035.png (Medium)img816.imageshack.us/.../win8logomockup.png (Large)
Use the Metro logo only in the Start Screen UI, not everywhere else.
Great four blue screens of death. Pentagram pwnd MS. Reminds me of south park where they all smelled their own farts. The king has no clothes.......or taste.
And the font used should be Segoe WP or Segoe Light to give the true Metro feel.
Wasn't very difficult to design the "new" logo, was it? - http://goo.gl/37DYi
Re: We hope you enjoy our new logo.
No Sir!
Sir, in the Middle Ages, we have you tarred and feathered for this, and driven out of town.
I believe her since all operational blind and completely lost touch with reality.
You think also of the home customers with good hardware?
or Windows is intended only for the worst possible hardware?
I'm not back to the Stone Age with a 'new Windows'
and 4me this new logo is a Imitation of the Shetland Flag.
I buy Windows since 3.1 but not this new Windows 8,
if Microsoft it not quick optimize with a better GraphicUI.

My suggestion for Windows 10: imageshack.us/.../winxv.png
fc05.deviantart.net/.../windows_8_logo_colored_by_rehsup-d4q45j5.png This logo is better and keep the same colours
Can't it be made just straight like this -> www.mediafire.com ?
Guys, the need for a redesign makes perfect sense. The direction (converging to simplicity and the Metro philosophy) is great. BUT WHY THE AWKWARD (and WRONG) PERSPECTIVE? A simple 2d logo would tell the same story more effectively - the ACTUAL tile layout.
"your name is Windows 8. Why are you a static flag?"
This logo is much better and is not just a generic shape at an angle. Please go with this one from OpticShape or any other one of the logos posted here. 90% of the logos designed over this weekend are better than this one that I can only assume your paid millions for and spent months/years designing.
It think the best way to put this logo is to add the four colors back (red, green, blue , and yellow) plus having the word Windows 8 in black. And it will look better.
The fact remains windows is dead and the OS needs to be named Metro.
here are 2 better versions:

Steve jobs is still right:
"The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don't mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way, in the sense that they don't think of original ideas, and they don't bring much culture into their products." Metro and the logo sucks.
OpticShape's 2nd suggestion is what I would go with. The current logo is dreadfully dull.
Really? That's the best Microsoft could come up with??? What a piece of junk. I hope they didn't actually pay someone for that cheap and style-less design. Add some yellow and you've got the Swedish flag, or rotate it to make the Scottish flag, or add some stripes and you get Greece. Makes me want to sell my Microsoft stock and go buy a Mac to go with my iPhone, and some Apple stock while I'm at it. My kids could have come up with a better logo.
My suggestions....
http://flic.kr/s/aHsjyR7wRa
@Andre.Ziegler Metro Sucks ????? rofl go check the online sites and see how many big sites following metro style even google copying metro style so your master steve jobs was wrong the only thing that i wish for is the better logo than this one
Anybody can hate any logo. It is just a logo.
For those who don't like the TM and the R, these are indications that these are TradeMarks and Registered Trademarks. One doesn't publish logos without them if they are actually true, so no argument there. To not do so just invites other people to copy and steal, and we don't want that.
To make my point about logos, let me illustrate witha few:
Intel: My god. Can you guys do better than to simply put a circle around your name? Do you not have any imagination?
Ford: Same...
Apple: What does it mean that there is a bite out fo the apple? Did you know that if one takes a bite out of an apple, it soon turns brown? Who is taking the bite, or has taken that bite anyway? The whole idea bites.
Dell: Seriously, if you're going to be so simplistic, why not just use Courier font?
Google: Goys, the use of multiple colors just makes things look like the 60's again. Get with the program!
Twitter: enough with the birds already. What is the connection between short comments and birds? Have you ever seen the bottom of a bird cage?
iPhone: Who taught you guys to speak english? It is MYPhone, not iPhone. This is ridiculous. iStink. that would be correct english.
I rest my case. The logo is great for what is supposed to be. Clean lines, and color-neutral. It can appear any color you want. Great!
-Enjoy Windows 8!

Epic Fail...please consider alternatives, Optic Shapes take on the logo is much acceptable than this one!
Jeez! That is just butt ugly. I think the XP logo was the best of the bunch. But, when my employer deploys Win8, I guess I'll get used to it. Sure glad I run Linux at the house.
For thos who haven't read a good article about this, here's a link again:
Metro is 2D. Therefore the logo should be 2D too.
@deiruch: Corrected link: www.theverge.com/.../the-real-missed-opportunity-integration-rebranding
You are done it wrong! Sorry guys, i'm not a apple fan, or something. I use both windows and os x, it's great os... But this new logo came with a joke: the new windows 8 has 4 blue screens, instead just 1 as usual!
U just fail.
i like the logo used for the default avatar in this page. its similar to the one used in windows phone mango. even though the logo looked like a flag through time. its still better than this one. i hate this new logo.
Microsoft: Sorry to tell you, but you have been ripped off. Pentagram took your money... For this.
Oh, yeah, Microsoft: In case you missed the other comments on this post:
@Kevin206 You are right, the iphone does not say anything about "me".
It has its own soul to it rather than trying to borrow mine. The animations feel right - they are quite humanistic.
Sometimes I wonder how ideas as this one make it through all filters (if any) and even worst get paid.
Maybe this logo will match perfectly with an unseen OOBE experience yet :), I have high expectations of a great OOBE that not only will welcome us to Win8 but also guide us to this new style. XP did it so well that people wanted to stay there...
I think its pale , needs to be more colorful , to show the fun User Experiences.
Like the logo, windows back to its roots.
The previous logo's since XP look good for viewing but this logo looks more meaningful.
Let's see how people will accept this. Non-technical people will find it hard to love this logo.
There is not a problem : http://www.myskreen.com ?? Look to the logo...
Greece is in deep financial trouble, why would MS want to adopt their flag as the symbol/logo for Windows 8? It may be true that i represents the Metro (or should it be Retro??) part of the UI... I would urge MS to consider carefully some of the modifications suggested by eloquent members on this blog by OpticShap, DjiXas and others! This would enhance the quality of the logo significantly!
Don't mind the logo but really think that the font / colour used for the text needs some work. Think it would look so much better with black text for a bit of contrast.
We buy Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7
we testing WDP...
before ...we buy this 8, the Hell's freezes...
Then in protest we wait of a 8 SLIC-MOD or new 8 Loader
from
forums.mydigitallife.info
-the Heads of all SLIC-MOD and Loader worldwide-
Then now with Windows 8 - we are pirates?
Back to the roots - or back to Stone-Age ?
Read a whole bunch of the blogs about the logo...I thought it bland.....but this is Corporate America......am also a professional artist, and sometimes simplicity is better then ego-mania.....like at an art show where all the artists are all trying so hard to show off that the ART gets left out.......
Interesting. Looking forward to trying Windows 8 Consumer Preview out! :) Will be definitely interesting to try out. Check make sure your servers are going to cope with all the download demand ;). You're starting to differentiate yourself quite a lot, and I like the Metro UI. Keep innovating!
I really like it. It's strong, confident and distinctive.
I would remove the TM and R marks as they are now longer legally necessary and they take away from the simplicity of it.
I preume we will see it in colors other than the Lumia 800 Cyan Blue?
Very clever, it remembers me a bit of an inversed Finland flag though
I'm surprised I don't hate it. I hate pretty much everything else that is "Metro Inspired" but this isn't too bad. I only have two minor concerns. First: what's with the "i"?? That dot looks WAY too high for the font. That has to be a mistake, right? Two: It's too *long* horizontally. I am going to guess there where will be shorter/more square versions (only the window and the 8 or maybe only the logo?).
"'Windows' really is a beautiful metaphor for computing and with the new logo we wanted to celebrate the idea of a window, in perspective."
If that is TRULY the case, then why the hell are you giving us a brand new UI that support basically only full-screen apps or side-by-side full screen apps? Metro is ruining Microsoft.
@SayNoToTheLogo - I actually don't have the MS W8 logo, but I must admit, that idea is far, far better.
Looks like the flag of Sweeden to me :-/
so...what can i say... I'm an avid windows user and i develop for windows and for the web using MSFT tools.
It's windowS not window...why? Do you freaking know why it was windows? Because we have various windows on the desktop that could be moved around and with different sizes...and what you come up with is a plain window? Are you telling me Metro will only have 1 window? Well...i don't like windows phone style so if you're making windows like that...ill wait for windows 9!
As history says...your OS is always "WIN-FAIL-WIN-FAIL-WIN-FAIL" and if W7 was a WIN...i guess i know where this is going to end up at...
Please make it nicer and happier and not just some lame logo that any college student could come up with.
if you need to explain a logo, Probably it is not a GOOD LOGO...
I love the new logo! Perfectly brings to mind Windows, Metro UI, and Microsoft. I wasn't sure about the blue color at first, but it reminds me of the old blue color on microsoft.com circa 2001.

I noticed the logo of Windows 8 is too simple and do not tell the new idea. I give Microsoft posts Windows 8 logo sketches that I have designed based on the idea of gathering together a window to create sustainability, I still want to keep four main colors for Windows is rich in forms such as from ever. We hope the comments and feedback Microsoft.
Sincerely yours,
This new logo is a step backwards so it is very fitting for Win 8 since its a step backwards also. I could see this for the Metro interface but I hope this is not going to be the new logo everywhere. I just hope that the stories I have been reading about Metro being the default interface with no way of automatically opening to the normal desktop are wrong... if they are not Win 8 will be a huge failure. Metro may be great for phones and tablets but will suck on a desktop. Seems to me Microsoft is trying to go after the tablet market at the expense of its loyal desktop base.
No, I don't enjoy the new logo, at all.
Hopefully it is not too late to adjust this Windows 8 logo. It is certainly the worst Windows logo ever:
- It should look like a window, like what your Paula from Pentagram said, but didn't really do...
Under the name Windows, users understand Icons, Tiles, and application Windows. They don't need to see a house or building window.
- It looks like a flag, still and even more than the previous logos.
- The new logo looks too much like the flag of Finland (in inverted colors though).
- The flag perspective goes backward, to the left instead of towards the future, to the right. It is the same mistake as what you did in Vista, with the icons turned to the left instead of to the right.
Do you really want the users to start thinking that Windows is retrograde? Or is Windows 8 is mainly targeted at right to left users ?
- What is the usefulness of the TM and (R) symbols? They add unnecessary noise to the logo.
- The logo has no colors. The Red Green Yellow and Blue colors of your previous logos were perfect. Why did you remove them? These four colors are almost the Microsoft Windows signature! I want to see them still.
- The point on the "i" and the "d" bar are higher than the top of the "W", especially visible for the i. How did you not see this?
- The white cross: You have put perspective in the four tiles, but not having perspective in the window borders (the cross) is kind of disturbing and breaks the perspective. So why having the perspective anyway? Keep it simple and have a 2D flat logo, why not?
You are paying Pentagram far too much money when any of your own designers would have come up with a better logo.
No, it is definitely the wrong logo.
Just hate this new logo so I recreated that! here is the link:

and mini logo:

It occurs to me in looking at it that directly trying to emulate a window in the logo is the kind of skeumorphism that being "authentically digital" tries to avoid.
www.facebook.com/.../set
How about that one.....???
Prefer the old and Microsoft store logo. I don't like the perspective on this.
I think the new logo would be much better with black letters. It would emphases the actual logo on the left.
Seems my previous comment didn't go through.
Have another approach which works with the brand integration:

can you say "BORING" boys and grils . . .
I don't like the new Windows 8 logo. The font is ok, but not the image. A better logo? The Windows 1.0 image (with little changes to modernize it) + Windows 8 font!
Bye!
I'm sorry but to be honnest I do not like the logo itself. This is probably because of the lack of colors. The policy is nice. I'm looking forward to see it in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Maybe it will change my mind.
In one word: crap!
Seems you guys can't get two good OS in a row.
Any reaction from Microsoft?
I fear that they'll just sit this out and we'll be stuck with the logo. Come on, do the only sensible thing: Use the Windows Phone 7.5 logo.
I hope you guys will reconsider.. I think Win8 is going to be really great (especially combined with Phone 8), but this logo is really.. terrible! It would be like a blemish on my new smartphone.
Have a look at OpticShape's take on it: www.flickr.com/.../photostream -- I think it still fits the philosophy; it's smooth, resembles a window (maybe even more so), and it's monochrome-recognizable. I would even argue it's more recognizable than the thing you have.
I just don't understand why you've chosen this logo... It looks _really_ cheap, when I first saw it I thought was an total fake made by some Russian kid in Paint or something. No offense, but if you've just tried to make it simple, I think you failed at all other aspects.
And I'm not even starting about it looking like "Windows 8" being thrown in a trash can when you tilt your head....
And I think there is still time to reconsider..! The logo has not been printed on any device or box yet, so it's not to late, right?
How awesome would it be to use this contribution of an Windows enthousiast as inspiration for your logo!! It would give a _massively_ positive feedback to all the people championing the platform, of how much you value their (our) contributions. People won't ever doubt that again.
Now you're changing your logo anyway, why not kill 2 birds with one stone? :)
I like the new logo for windows 8 , but what does the "Turquoise COLOR "Signifies...?
Does it refer's to "Brightness" or "Simplicity" or the Googled information which i got about turquoise color is that--> *The meaning of the color turquoise is "open communication and clarity of thought".*... .? what s the answer?
Paula Scher to Apple:
You make computers... why are you an Apple?
Looks a bit too conservative to me, to stay absolutely polite. A bit of bad publicity about the whole new OS came to my ears and eyes too, in terms of practicality, and attractiveness of the new design with Metro. I'm a regular reader of PCMag.com's John C. Dvorak and his columns, and I must say I agree with him in most points of his criticism. Read his articles, might give you a hint about the fate of the new OS. Me personally, I see my Windows upgrade path skip a beat, just as it did with Vista, from what I've seen of the new OS so far, the "golden rule of skipping a version" since Windows 98 SE remains in place for me. Vista was a piece of humiliating crap for you, with 7 you did it right for one. Don't screw up your progress by trying to catch up on an already long gone train labelled Android and iOS.
I'm not feeling this logo. The icon has no sense of dynamics at all. I think it's a valid question to ask why Windows is using a flag, but in my opinion Paula Scher is thinking too black/white. It's not a window OR a flag; it's a window AND a flag. Still, I admit the flag part doesn't make much sense, but I wonder to which extent it's justified to wonder about the flag concept now, after Windows has used – and commercialized/popularized – the concept its entire lifespan so far.
I think the new mark is pretty boring and removing the colors is a bad choice. I'm all for removing the faux-industrial design characteristics (plastic, glass...) but I honestly don't see this window in perspective to work well in applications. I think I would rather see a simplified Windows flag with colors on a soft light grey button.
As for the typeface, it doesn't fit with the mark. The typeface is rather dynamic which fits perfectly with the previous mark but not with this lethargic one.
In conclusion, I genuinely think there are some great concepts and valid questions in regard to the new logo design, but the end result is a big step back in my opinion.
guys.... just make us laugh... how much did you paid for tha... "thing"?
New Windows 8 Logo post in Greek blog! wow.
Ugly logo! Since the 90' design Microsoft got down to the XP's design and now... oh... Shame! Looke what they done with the UI in Windows 8... That's not a UI... If Microsoft doesn't try to correct their "problems" then I will switch to Mac, seriously :(
I am very disappointed by the new logo, please redesign it.
I commented here before.
I had originally said that OpticShape's logo was not quite right for Windows 8. After checking back in to this blog and the ensuing comments, I happened across his latest design.
This desgn is much better and more in alignment with the Metro dsign principals. Good job OpticShape--I really like your work (even the first set of logos!).
I sincerely hope MS will reconsider their choice of logo.
Regards,
This is perfectly parallel to the metro UI! <3 it!
Here we go with the design for the Windows 8 Logon Screen which I initially found to be bland and uninspiring so I made it Metro!

@fourpastmidnight: Glad to have you on board :)
@Rijk: Thank you for your support.
This looks like Greek Flag!!! it's good for Microsoft?
It`s not the most exciting logo I´ve seen ! It´s fair but dull !!! Whether the logo looks like a window or not is actually of no interest att all. Creating a logo doesn´t mean copying an item - that´s only lack of fantasy ! AND - how are you going to apply this new logo to all existing and future compouter keyboards ? If a change - make a real change that can be an attraction wherever it´s beeing seen !
Regards/LA
fabulous one color used for this new beta logo. and here is an inspirational win8 logo concept draft tweaked right based on this design: http://zecno.com
This colour is called powder blue and with the Hellenic style of flag it does look very Greek and therefore symbolises failure.
Why don't you just take this suggestion an rebrand Windows and everything else? www.theverge.com/.../the-real-missed-opportunity-integration-rebranding
Sorry to post this again, but it's a really good read and way better alternative for the Windows 8 logo.
Ugliest Logo so far.
Also I must admit that in the meantime i get used to Windows Phone 7.5, I dislike the Metro style completly on the Windows 8 Preview an don Xbox. If I would have any chance to change the xbox back from Metro to pretty I would do it.
The new logo looks for me terrible borring and mostly terrible cheap. Even the Windows 1.0 Logo seems to be more dynamic. I liked the Aero/Glass style, because it had... style. New thing looks like a practicant had the task to design a new logo in 5 Minutes.
I wished that you kept the flag, it's a unique design. Windows logo could be a white flag in a green tile, similar to Windows Phone which is in a red tile...
I also wish to change the Windows Phone logo into a red colored logo similar to the new Windows 8 logo...
I hate to say it, but I think this is the first time I will not look forward to seeing the Windows logo popup before the login screen.
It doesn't feel powerful, sleek, aggressive. But most of all, I really don't like the perspective of the Windows logo compared to the text.
Just my opinion.
It goes with the "tile" and solid color design, but I think the "windows" should be different colors.
you did it - now it looks like windows - but it's not sexy at all..... :-(
I'm a big fan of the Swiss Style and I must say that getting rid of the 'flag thing' looks good to me. My thoughts on this is that if the window is flipped horizontally it would do a very nice job of leading the eye to the typography. As it stands it does lead my eye away because of the direction of the perspective.
I also read that the logo would change colors when the theme (or something of that sort) is changed by the user. With this in mind I guess it would have been only appropriate if the four tiles each received a different color (I would prefer your old Red, Green Blue and Yellow). This not only establishes the dynamism of the logo but also relates to the windows we've known since we touched computers, a big plus on your corporate image. As it stands, it looks like a new company altogether.
Any way, I do like the Metro UI and the clean typography. But, the logo redesign idea should have been given a feasibility test, just like the new os.
Well, I tried out my suggestions, and here they are:

windows 8 Logo looks dead to me. There is no life in it. That's my opinion.
But em a big fan of windows XP Logo.
I like the whole design of the logo, but I find the colour too striking, maybe it's just the white background, but it really jumps in your face, I've seen the grey version and I found that one to be more aesthetically pleasing. But I'm not going to pass complete judgement until I see it in an OS environment.
Any official comment on this? Few if any people like the new logo. True, everyone will have forgotten about this in a year, just like the Pentium-debate or other stories. It's just sad that you didn't work with the Metro-designers on the new logo... Truly a missed opportunity.
Two suggestions:
1. While holding Ctrl, if we click back or forward button in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, the corresponding page should be opened in a new tab (in case of IE) and new window (in WinExplorer's case). This behavior is present in all the non-IE browsers so at least provide this *missing shortcut* in IE10.
2. In Windows 8, can you guys provide the brightness feature like Mac where user can dim the brightness till the screen is all black? Also, rather than having the fixed values (+20% jump), please make the dimness/brightness scale continuous to give the user a smoother experience.
@deiruch: Microsoft is a huge company (as you already know) and in these kind of companies everything has to be run by a dozen of dozens of people, including legal and what not, I suspect there will be at least 2-3 weeks until we hear something. You haven't seen bureaucracy until you see one of these companies in action :) They would also have to run by Pentagram (facing another dozen of people in layers).
However, there is no rush as in urgency.
I think the new logo is great! Modern and retro at the same time, and it'll look great on Windows 8 marketing and products. After all, simple logos tend to be what people like nowadays, and it makes it more memorable than something intricate and complex.
Microsoft is working too good, and it's new logo is also very beautiful.
www.currency.com.pk/prizebond
I don't hate it, but I don't like it either, it could have been so much better, like many of the designs others have posted and especially on that design contest site!
Some people commented on the rendering of the word "Windows", especially on the i being too close to the W and the dot being raised too high, but this is standard Segoe UI and rendered exactly the same as in the Windows 7 logo.
What I find more interesting is the 8 digit. In Windows 7 it was Segoe UI Light, but the 8 is not even standard Segoe UI !!!
The Windows 8 logo would have looked much better and more Metro style design if both the Windows word and 8 digit had used Segoe UI Light, which would also fix the "dot on the i" issue, as you can see in "The Windows Blog" logo. Right now the "Windows 8" text looks too fat and non-Metro.
As for the position of the logo, it may look better behind the text but I would keep it like this. I do agree that colored tiles would have been much nicer, as the four Windows logo colors are so much a part of the brand identity. Like many others I fail to see the reason to drop this and go for one color, which also seems to be version specific, are you going to keep it in this blue color for future versions of Windows or will it be a different color for each release?
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm really looking forward to Windows Logo ReDesign 6.0 for Windows 9.
Windows 8 logo is very similar to Windows 1.0 logo. Greatly enjoyed this new logo.
WOW talk about a WHOLE lotta people who don't get it! It's pretty clear what Microsoft is trying to do here, they are trying to do what en mass what Apple is trying to do incrementally, build a clear recognizable UI scheme across all the devices that run Windows. While Apple has chosen to make incremental changes to Mac OS to make it more like iOS, Microsoft has chosen to bring Metro to the desktop in one shot. And personally I think it will work big for them. As for the logo, it's a reflection of this "Go Big or Go Home" (if you will) approach to their product. It's simple, yet with all it's simplicity it's making a very bold statement about Windows. And I think the naysayers here are really forgetting that.
I don't care for this logo. I think a kid from grade school could've come up with a better design.
I think if Bill was still there, he would have donated the designer(s) of this logo as food to the tigers section at the zoo.
OK, that was for laughs!
But here is a suggestion to please everyone:
Make all these logos available to the users (with slight modification, like removing "XP", for example), and let him or her select the logo that they like (and switch from one to another at anytime)!
Then you get no more whining, no more complaints, problem solved!
It will be interesting to feel the Windows 8 logo on products moving forward. I do like the way the current 'flag' window defies conventional glass - I always saw it as fluid glass. And the whiteout version in the standard Avatar isn't offensive and won't be as it slowly disappears from wherever it is. To me it always represented the flow of the Windows platform and how smooth it is. But design isn't about the frills any more. it's about cut through clarity and impact through simplicity, and I feel these characteristics are incorporated in the new logo. I sense it will quickly make itself at home in a modern world. I agree with the outlined creative approach and consider it sound thinking (love the idea of coloured to suit you). Good job all and good luck!
It seems some people are missing a major creative element of this logo. It's in point 3.
"...when you change your color, the logo changes to reflect you. It is a “Personal” Computer after all."
Keeping the grad, this would be too complicated. Life, is already, too complicated.
If this were my design, I would make one more revision: change the "direction" of the window graphic's perspective. Right now it leads away from the text. I'd change the perspective to lead into the text, which is simply a 180-degree flip. I tried it, and (to me) it's a less distracting layout.
If someone's already suggested this, sorry.
So, what are the odds of including a White Vinyl sticker of the New Logo in the box?
add more colors! .. i suggest red or/and black! .. or just use the classic colors of the windows' logo (the red, yellow, green, blue)
A complete change. I Like It. Simple and lovely...
Congrats, this new logo is meaningful and attractive. I wish Windows team all the best.
In fact,I like window 8 vary much,But,I have no money to buy。 I came from china,my websit is http://www.engineersbridge.com
Of course the funny thing about Windows 8, is that they are getting rid of windowing, therefore no more windows for applications. You can only run one application at a time, and it will be full screen. I have never used applications in full screen rendering. I am almost never in Internet explorer browsing the web either, mostly just use Office and other applications.
It’s a window… not a flag .... Then you should be able to look out the Window. Looks closer to the old flat Windows 3.11 logo than something modern. Smart designer would tie it to the local weather and the window would reflect the current weather outside (Sunny, Rain, Snow, Cloudy......
But what about the version number??? Are you keeping it same as that was in Developer and Consumer preview (NT 6.2) or making it 7.0 in final release???
this new logo of windows is really nice.
www.smsjokes.pk/Love-SMS
You want to represent the new design (metro) with the logo. The idea is good, but the implementation is imho wrong. Changing a unique logo to something this generic (basic) is like if Apple would remove the bite mark from their logo, to represent their aim for "perfection".
The bite mark makes their logo unique, the same way the flag curve makes the windows logo unique.
I beg you to PLEASE SERIOUSLY RECONSIDER your decision to go with this new logo. I see it's motion, but that's all I see and nothing else. People say it jokingly, but it really looks like tilted recycle bin. I don't see the confidence that you see in this logo. You can do so much better than just a tilted window. It just doesn't look like it's thought out well.
Now about the color... This is not necessarily for Windows logo, but why are those four colors of previous Windows flag on Microsoft Store? Those are not part of Microsoft logo in the first place. So if you take those four colors away from the new Windows logo, then what the heck do those four colors on Microsoft Store become? I mean I get the reason why you're removing colors on Windows, but for related brands, they need to also change the logo to make sense with the new Windows logo.
Please take a look at Opticshape's designs:
www.flickr.com/.../photostream (4 Colors)
www.flickr.com/.../photostream (One Color)
In those designs, logo has more motion portrayed than your current new logo. It could be perceived as windows opening and/or windows sliding in from left and right. This can show how your charms slide from the left and how you multitask from the left. You could still use the one color to have user be able to customize.
I like Opticshape's ideas. Even if you don't decide to go with those two designs, please and please consider changing the Windows logo again.
Thank you!
Have to say.... REEEEEELY NOT a fan of the new logo and the color scheme that Microsoft is choosing to follow. It saddens me to see the Aero interface and the cool glass looks disappear. Please, at least let the end user chose his or her own colors rather than be required to use the nasty, semi-pastel colors!
The majority of the people hate the logo.
Microsoft chooses to ignore this and go ahead with this shitty logo.
мне кажется обычный смертный не поймет пользовательский интерфейс нового виндовса, не говоря уже о его новых возможностях.... <a href="strippers-show.com/.../a>-<a href="atlantida-show.com/.../a> по статистике, 90 проц. возможностей остаются непознаными. И считаю очень не удобно когда отсутвует пуск в котором есть - недавно установленные программы, не давно запущенные программы.
Like many others, I totally hate this new logo.
It takes everything that was iconic about previous Windows logos and chucks it (ironically) right out of the window for something which clearly just misses the mark entirely. It looks dull, boring and lifeless compared to the much more colourful and inviting Windows Vista/Windows 7 logo.
I hate the new logo!! Its so plain and ugly. The old style meant something to us and it means a lot to get it changed back! And a fish for the booting screen? Like common use your head, it is 2012, not the 60's T_T
WINDOWS 8 DO NOT INSTALL IT GUYS, it sucks, I've chosen the different partition option at the beginning even though it has upgraded from my windows 7, where's the start button? , too much stuff and more complicated on windows explorer menus, if this windows is not the full version then why it is NOT possible to uninstall it ? I really don't like it. It will be another VISTA disaster I believe.
GOING BACK TO WIN7 AS SOON AS I CAN, ALSO I GOT A LINUX TO, IT'S MUCH BETTER. COME ON MICYSOFT BUT YOU COUL'VE DONE BETTER !!!
GOTTA BE MORE USER FRIENDLY COME ON, XP WAS THE BEST !!!
I WANT BILL GATES BACK TO MICROSOFT !!!!!! :)
sorry MS, I love you, but that logo (windows 8) is an ugly boring flat flag. Yeah, I said it. It's really similar to the windows 1.0 logo IMO. I think someone there could've designed something better
I added MS-Bob into the new Logo image. See here: classicquarters.blogspot.com/.../has-microsoft-abandoned-bob_07.html
Because it would be fun! And adding custom photos or images into any of the four window panes, or across them all, or out of a random set-up folder would be neat, too.
OK, I understand the reasons for the new logo, but I really miss the intricate colours and details of the Windows 7 logo and the whole 'Aero' effect. Still, its only a logo so it really doesnt matter that much.
What does matter is functionality; and the Original Windows 1.0 was a breakthrough in functionality ... it gave us windows (with a small w) to use and instantly we gained productivity and flexibility.
Now, as far as I can tell Microsoft has removed the 'windows' from 'Windows 8' in the Metro UI. If there is one thing I would ask to see in the final version it would be to use windows in Metro. Come on microsoft, you know what a window is, you invented it ... please combine windows functionaility, with Metro. (And please dont tell me just to use the desktop; I know it still exists, but I just want to see some windows flexibility in Metro, not a dumbed-down product that my Grandparents can use!).
Windows has just lost it's colours. Is that a window or four bsod ?
The logo of Windows Vista was the best. A circle with Windows in it. This logo is not upto the mark. There are no colours, no enticing design. This is really not upto the mark.
Good idea, but the Win8 logo looks more like the Windows Azure logo than the Windows 1.0 logo. I believe that is a bad decision for Microsoft. It's the dumbest logo I've seen. Maybe something more colorful (because it's much more modern than Windows 1.0) would work for Windows 8.
It is very befitting that this new logo bares a resemblance to the original logo back in the 80's. Like back then this is the first real change from the pre-existing standard interface. It is a very exciting time to be enjoying tech Like it was back then :)
Windows 8,begin with the end in mind, looking good .
I love this new logo, and color is my favorite! I believe people would love this new look and I can't wait for it to finally be out!
<a href="www.london-registrars.co.uk/">Company secretary</a>
WINDOWS 8 LOGO is missing the flare of the basic Color splotch that is Microsoft. The logo does need to have the color back into the actual part of the logo that looks like a window. The flashy animated colors of RED, GREEN, BLUE, and YELLOW are what made Microsoft. Either they add it to the LOGO or add it to the new spinning dotted wait circle.
You couldn't make a more dull and boring logo. It's flat, monochromatic, and the font is so neutral it has no style what so ever!
The logo is terrible, which means it's perfect for the product.
Sam Moreau I'm lost for words.
Hopefully a joke?
WinEight? or 'Windows 2012' :)
(my logo opinion)
It's just horribly ugly.
Soon, the vultures are hovering over this logo.
:) *gg
The logo matches my feelings towards Metro UI and Windows 8 as a whole.
Basically all the life has been take out of Windows, from the logo to the ruined desktop experience because Microsoft want to force Metro down our throats. The logo doesn't even represent Metro, which has colour. The dot above the i also floats at an odd height, just doesn't look right, like you might see it if used on a counterfeit product. I presume the odd placement of the "dot" is deliberate in order to get the whole logo including the word protected under some trademark somewhere, but it looks naff and is as ill thought out as the Metro UI on Windows 8. The straight diagonal lines of the flat flag also look rough (stepping) due to compression and when used on displays with lower dpi. I shudder to think how much was spent on it.
What is going on at Microsoft that makes them think the new logo is anyway acceptable for a flagship product by a huge multi-national company? Have they just given up on Windows? Who ever has taken leadership of this new product should be congratulated by Microsoft competitors for destroying a brand people fell back in love with when Windows 7 was released.
Windows Vista - Windows Me - Windows 8
Microsoft, you need to listen to your customers and your staff, a company that doesn't, is a company that fails.
Windows 8 and Metro should just be called MS Bob 2.0. It just sucks sorry. The logo simply doesn't represent the fact that you are working so hard to make Windows touchy-feely and really that isn't what the enterprise customer is looking for (the MS bread and butter). That logo is fine if it really was representative of what you are doing for a corporate environment.
Metro looks to be geared for Mac people and or people that have never used a computer ever before and only want to shop and social network or be good for the three year old cause it looks like it was designed by Playskool. The home user is typically just barely able to understand what a computer can do let alone operate it. You are taking what they know how to do at work and just tossing it out the window. If they have a Mac at work they will typically have one at home.
Hipsters in coffee shops don't apparently know that we (typical enterprise people) don't want an interface done by Playskool. If I want a Playskool computer I'll get a Mac. I have to wonder just how many of the people on the committees that "worked" to come up with these changes actually have run a Windows machine as their main system. I would just about bet money they run around like entitled, rich, spoiled brat, hipsters with a Playskool computer at their side. I bet these same people think that MS Bob was just the greatest thing ever when it was developed assuming they were probably five years old at the time.
That 89 logo looks interesting. Are you sure it's real?
Also, I'd say that that is a good logo, just bring the old design back made Metro-style.
Do not like the new plain logo. You need something BRIGHT - ALIVE & INTERESTING this is dismalling PLAIN !
I noticed you left our Microsoft Bob and Windows ME. Bob was goofy and ME was a blue screen generator nightmare. How soon we forget.
I know, give it a cute cuddly Bob Smiley head in the window and give it some bright colors and have a cute yellow dog outside the window. Yeah with preschooler bright and pastel colors and fuzz the edges so that it doesn't look so harsh we wouldn't want to get cut on all those dangerous corner and sharp edges. Maybe make a deal with Playskool to use some of their art. And yeah not so long.
Is there any changes happening or we just talking to ourselves here?
Very useful information. I think Windows 8 is going to be great. Please read my latest post <a href="www.tek-tutorials.com/.../">Best Graphic Cards For The Money</a>
Put this logo on the boot screen. The fish is too ordinary and ugly.
Just like the logo for the 2012 Olympics in London... it sucks! Talk about a step backwards! This is worse than the Win1 logo!!! Those who think it's great are suffering from a severe delusional bout of "The Emporer's New Clothes" syndrome! This is where the Mac will no longer be on the sidelines, but will take centre stage... YOU HEARD IT HERE, FIRST!
The new logo is perfect. I clearly resembles the uniqueness of Windows 8 and the Metro Style concept of apps.
The color and style of the logo is simple but it what windows 8 all about.
And in case you need directions, to glance at my app and see if you guys can figure out , well, any of its abilities, and more importantly WHY it is ABLE to have them, you can do a GOOGLE search for the winmatrix thread, or download from deviantart. or not, idont care. i will happily , and i mean happily, next trime, come back and drop the comparison. Just fix your leak in your sinking ship, cause spli-space is a large location. it is wonderland. you can make something trying to be Splinter too, I dont mind., I fear no competition. Just understand that I must , have to, for the good of everyone, at least show what you are trying to push out. Surface rocks, kinect seems good. phones do well. win7 is fantastic. 8 may even be better than 7 if stand alone. but metro is not meant for this and i have to show it. k ? k
Just kidding. Never even heard of Splinter. Where am I? Who are you? What's going on here? Stop harassing me, I'm only 6
I thought the Windows logo as shown in this blog's anonymous avatar has to be sexiest reincarnation of the Windows logo, as seen here (windowsteamblog.com/.../anonymous.gif).
To see the NEW unveiled logo to be.. a rectangular window in styled in perspective...
my heart sank.
I understand simplicity, am a fan of minimalism, and I adore Metro.
This.. redesign of the logo is downright unacceptable.
Not like this piece of comment of mine will change anything.
The feeling is as if my love for Windows all these years is returned with a small stab of betrayal.
Ah well.
Very nice optical illusion on the window logo. More color reflects the metro ui better especially the home screen.
I think it is a brilliant design. The only two negs are that, a- the TM breaks the visual flow, and, 2- the color could be a bit let pedestrian. But, I get where it is coming from and going to, and think it is excellent work.
Any plans to make a typeable character out of the "window?"
-k
PS- if it was just a touch darker, exactly the color of an active link....
I think Microsoft are being LAZY, the logo is Basic and rubbish in my opinion, Windows don't reliase people buy their software because of the Brand, which was the Lovely windows logo which this one really is poor, nothing like the brand, Microsoft just broke their brand by starting a new basic design and a rubbish OS, Windows 8 looks like a kid designed it or someone did it when they was drunk. I will not waste any money on it and i'm glad they gave us a free preview as it's shown me what Microsoft are doing. Are they getting bored or something? New staff who know nothing take Vbulletin for example, since a new business took over and sacked the staff who was brilliant, VBulletin 4.x.x is Rubbish this is where Microsoft are going.
Love the new touch and smooth fast interface of Windows 8, however the Windows 7 logo and desktop is more eye pleasing to me. Not a big fan of the new logo though I suppose it fits the Metro scheme. Using a Samsung Series 7 Slate and loving Windows 8, though it does have quirks yet, especially if viewing video. I use my device as a desktop and tablet, still switch to Windows 7 for desktop as I miss the Start menu.. :-)
I like the design, but, why not keep the original Windows colors for each section? I mean, I've gotten used to seeing red-orange in the top left section, blue in the lower left section, green in the top right section, and yellow in the lower right section ever since Windows 95, and I really liked it. And plus, the apps in the start menu in the Metro UI have different colored backgrounds, not just blue, so I thought that just plain blue is actually somewhat shocking to see.
funny, they don't even acknowledge WINDOWS MILLENIUM EXISTED ......almost as big of a failure as New Coke....
woww. it's amazing change of Microsoft's logo. the new logo is very simple. but there`s a modern concept on the new logo..
I kinda like it, just one suggestion, less wording. The wording causes the logo to be too long. Rater than spelling out Windows 8 to the side, put Win 8 on the bottom.
Microsoft....this is a bad bad bad idea. Let me explain.
First, I know you spend a lot of money to have this new logo designed. And, honestly, I understand everything you said in this blog post. Your reasoning is sound. But ask yourself...do you want to make money? Do you want to have division about a logo? Do you want your product to be associated with blandness?
I love Microsoft and your products. I'm a die hard fan. But one thing that annoys the heck out of me is the constant changing of the Windows logo. Since Vista, and finally with W7...you got the logo right. In-fact, it should be the default logo for Microsoft in general. We all associate Microsoft with that logo (and not your actual company logo).
Look at Apple. They haven't changed that logo for years now and everyone associates that apple with a bite mark with them. There is a reason they don't change it... consistency. Association. Passion. Pride.
Microsoft, on the other hand, likes to do what I call the 'moving [logo] target method'. Not good.
The most current logo...if it follows the Apple method...is VERY popular. If you recall on 30 Rock, there was a fake laptop that had the logo but in just illuminated white color like an Apple laptop....and people were clamoring for it.
For this logo, we will all pass. The askew look is boring. Boring. BORING. I said it three times because that's important. I don't care what justification (i.e. 'your current logo doesn't look like a window'...who cares?), it makes me go 'meh' instead of 'yeah!'. I'm not proud to put this logo anywhere. Current version...very much so. We want to have pride in the product.
Look at the symmetry of the current logo. It just works and has 'style'. Of course it doesn't look like a real window, and you know what, we don't care. It works as a great 'home' button on a Windows Phone, and even the start button in W7. This logo? I'd constantly think something is wrong...like somebody didn't know graphic design 101 (even thought I know you went to some high end design firm to get this done).
Mr. Moreau, as the director of 'user experience', this is important. Chalk this one up to someone that is not going to fly well. You have a logo that is not inspiring anyone except those at Redmond apparently. While I appreciate the effort to create a logo that reflects Metro....just stop it. Stop changing the logo. Keep it in the W7 current format. Heck, make it one color if you'd like, but the windows 'flag in motion' version is a beautiful thing. This reminds me of depression and lack of sunlight and gloomy skies. Is that really the message you want to put out for the new version of Windows?
Keep one Windows logo...the W7 version...take a note from a company (Apple) that excels in design and user 'passion'...you too can do it. But not when you keep making changes (and in this case, unfortunately, for the worse). Believe it or not, this will actually impact my decision to buy Windows 8. I don't need to, but I don't want to see this logo. Will this logo be my 'start' button on the tablet which currently for W7 tablets is the symmetrical and beautiful W7 windows logo? Can you see how it doesn't look "right"?
Sorry for the long post...but this has to stop. I really hope you are listening. You will get plenty of people who don't care and will be fine with this logo...but those kind of people will be fine with any logo you put out (they simply don't care). You'll also have people who care about style, design, passion and 'attachment' to the product. The logo helps seal that. This does not. It does not!
I LOVE windows 8....I despise this logo. It's not a petty position I'm making here...it's heartfelt. I love Microsoft, and I want you to keep succeeding. I'm spending time writing this instead of doing something else because I'm sad and depressed (probably from the colors and blandness of the logo...but more about the lack of keeping with the current logo version).
Thank you for reading this and your time :)
A lynchpin for Microsoft. Apple got it. Since my early days getting 5 1/4 update discs in the mail for 1.0, Windows ME, the business contact manager in Outlook on Vista fiasco and many others, this new logo design is indicative of the perspective of the company direction as a whole.
"1. We wanted the new logo"
It's not about "we" (microsoft), it's about me (the consumer). Your company never really was able to grasp that fully.
neither in the new logo or your bug filled software pushed out the door over the decades now. Trying to do everything but not able to reach the quality of excellence. My uncountable & endless hours helping family and friends deal with the "experience" of frozen screens, corrupted OS's, update mania, how-to's and what-the-heck-am-i-supposed to-do-now's is mind boggling.
Take out the XP and insert 8. Simple. You should have did it with the software too.
For my opinion previous windows logo is good enough.
we were particularly attracted to their sense of classic graphic design which fit well with our Metro design principles. <a href="www.classicstomsshoes.com/toms-glitters-women-c-1.html"><strong>Toms Glitters Sale</strong></a>
Wow . The Windows Evolution LoGO !

We are losing the Windows' spirit! Let's have a nice transition improving the current Vista logo instead. Removing the colors really looks depressing!
This was a fantastic post and an AWESOME redesign of the logo! Quite frankly I'm excited at the Metro language and design that Microsoft is using going forward and look forward to the future. Also, all commenters and critics are psychotically retarded for thinking that their color designs and perspectives of the logo work, as they lack all kinds of imagination and sense. Can none of you read what it clearly says in this post? It's like begging them to show Master Chief's face in Halo...clearly you people on the internet are insane. =\
Ugly. Xp/Vista/Seven is best logo ever
Pretty generic!
A pre-fab, totally standardized and utilitarian, design unconcerned with inspiration, expressions of diversity or with the boundless faculty of an active imagination. It reminds me of the insecure monarch afraid to dance and with a guillotine reining over cracked tennis court clay and gravel rock gardens. A sideways totem to the cold calculations of a deadened and fashionable, modern and mental society. Perhaps a cardboard sheep in a cubical lowering blinds would help illustrate how dehydrated the vision of modern eyes has become; suffocated by obsessions with fear of the unknown and the entrapment of a false, constructed contraction of identity.
The logo integrates very well with the self serving, isolationist, ego laden "I, Me, Mine" mentality of minds addicted to disposability for convenience sake. It's like feeding a baby with margarine(plastic) instead of it's mother's milk(raw and alive) ~ it has no heart(beat).
Mind you, my above response came utterly from my first impression and perhaps a cynical one. After I read the intentions behind the new logo I was able to relate and open more to the design. However, when I look at it still, my gut response is contraction, and a wish to discard it(crumple it and chuck it) or file it away somewhere so I don't have to look at it, as with a receipt.
The Swiss are pragmatic and efficient designers, but we, people, are not perfect spheres, perfectly fitting the dimensions and schematics of another's pinball machine. We are representations of spirit embodied in life and in individual living systems. Your logo is too efficient and generic, a maze, for a mouse, with laboratory precision and narrow and sterile corridors. I say, break out the goat's milk soap and chuck the "disinfectant" wipes along with their blueprints and patents! Have a heart, and breath into your system life and light, beyond LEDs.

why can't I see all "462" comments, including one I posted yesterday ?
The new Logo is a visual abomination, evidently de-signed by people for whom the word "iconic" is unknown, and "symbolic" refers to their last session with Sim-City.

p.s. I was referring to the new chimera of Windows/Metro as "Windows Bipolar:" I will update that now to: "Windows Tripolar," although "Win 8 Original, Win 8 Spicy Crispy, and Win 8 Extra Crispy" has a certain deep-fried charm.
The new logo does nothing for me. My overall impression is "meh."
I feel like I need to follow up from my last post.
What, exactly, is Microsoft trying to do? The quad colored 'flag' has been part of Windows for eons. With respect, if Ms. Scher doesn't get that, maybe she needs a history lesson. The irony here? This new 'window' looks more like a 'flag' (see Sweden or Finland) than ever.
You want to be 'humble, yet confident?' How about you worry about software that functions bug-free and is easy to use? The only thing this new logo tells me is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. In Microsoft's case - that isn't a good thing.
...Personally, to me it looks like a giant nosebleed. Why would you scrap out the famed flag and replace it with something that looks like generic?! PLEASE admit that this is a horrible joke and that the real logo actually has the flag. The all sky blue theme is a bad idea, why get rid of the iconic colors? And the sheer longness of the logo is way out of line. And get rid of the plain text and R TM clutter! Overall, this new logo is horrid and I can make a better design! If this isn't a joke and the rest of 8 is like this, screw Windows 8! I'm skipping to 9.
It's amazing how corporate group think can make such a bland logo that looks like 10 minutes of design work seem like genious IN YOUR OWN MINDS ! It's atrocious by any professional standard.
Если я правильно поняла, то цвет логотипа будет меняться под вкус и индивидуальность каждого пользователя ПК? Вообще, это замечательная и продуманная идея.Вот только один вопрос- будет ли в нем, какое либо движение в окнах или в самом названии?.
Man, what happened?! Why so plain? That's what this logo says to me. Are we gonna have monotone monitors too?! This is bad! At least give it the colors! This wasn't even a thought. So Windows is going to be plain n boring? I like Windows7 and I thought Windows8 would be reflecting that image, with MORE, not LESS! I think I'll just stick to Windows 7. It's at least visually appealing!
Each new version of Windows was a step forward and the design&beauty of the logo reflected the progres. I'm sorry to say that this logo tells me that we are going back to the 'idea' stage before 1.0 was ever conceived...
I'm a big fan of 'no nonsense', but that is no reason to make it ugly. The motto 'less is more' should not be applied to the extreme, because 'too little is nothing'. This logo.............. is almost a reason to switch to Apple (sorry)...
Sorry to say but this logo is disgusting :(. This metro thing maybe is going to be the biggest failure.
I think its rather dull.
Maybe with a slight tilt in perspective it reflects oneself.
I can really see why as the functionality of the windows program grew you would want to show off what it can do but now that we know that the possibilities are endless it is nice to go back to the core of the brand itself with the "windows."
People often get overly excited and “horror vacui” or fear of empty space and feel they need to cram everything into their logo forgetting about their core idea or concept. This is the most common mistake of new logo designers. I found some great <a href=" www.brandings.com/free-create-company-logos.php"> free logo design ideas</a> at this one website that could help someone doing it on their own.
Personally I really like the new Window’s Windows’ because it is really getting back to the core idea that this operating software is your window to the world.
Win 8 logo I think personally that it sucks....its ugly......design ugly.......color......ugly......wrapped together...if poss & I HAD to run 8 I change logo boot window log in screen everything that used the new 8 icons!
MIcrosoft had done a great job to fight aganist apple co.. It would better if they add the new logo on taskbar unlike the previous consumer preview..
this is very informative.

A Georgia Army flag at a different perspective lol GJ now it's almost a perfect copy.
All proportions were edit to be an exact possible view of the Georgia Army's flag.
www.use.com/ec130e2635cd270be995
Almost forgot while searching some flags there was a few that was pretty close but I end up choosing Georgia since it was the closest from having the white line instead of a reversed line as a few others had.
