And be sure you keep your eyes on UltimatePC.com for more Ultimate Extra news in future as well as hot Ultimate Exclusives for Windows Vista Ultimate users.
Why isn't it possible to release such videos in a proper quality without a moving camera, with perfect loops and without dirt an the material? Microsoft should invest more than just 5 minutes to search some stock footage.
Hey tino, those videos loop *perfectly* on my computer, so it must be something on your machine.
Can't tell the same about the installer. I installed these together with the english language pack for Vista Ultimate. I don't know which one, but one of them crashed my AntiVir OnAccess Guard, had to restart the computer.
One annoying thing about the sound schemes... I get a sound when right clicking on any option (Windows Live Messenger, desktop properties, etc.) and can't seem to turn it off. What's the name of that sound property ?
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT!!!!! THX!!!!!!!!!
The "Ultimate" wallpapers that used to be at the old Ultimate site disapeared - or at least, I can't find them. Were are they?
The Sound schemes is a good idea..hope to see more sound schemes in the near future..
It would be really nice to see some cool screensavers as extras..
It be nice if we actually received some decent applications as part of the extra's content. How is it that Language packs are considered "extra". I paid a lot "extra" to get Vista Ultimate. The premium paid is so far disappointing unless I go and learn 50 other languages.
Is there something up with the UltimatePC.com site? Whenever I go see the full list of 'Exclusives' it shows me the 'Extras', in fact the only exclusive I have ever seen highlighted is the discount on Stardock Multiplicity.
Are there more exclusives than the Multiplicity deal or is this the obscure way to show that there is only one so far?
Weird, I only got offered the Dreamscene content...wonder what happened to the sounds?
Oops, they're available to download now
I'm an IT Consultant and use Vista a lot on many computer. Ultimate and Extras are great, I love the HD dreamscapes, but it's all lost because the screen savers can't show that video. The only time someone could see these great HD dreamscapes on my duel 22" dell monitors is when I'm not there, but the screen saver comes on for security so they see nothing!
Major over sight, it's very short sighted not to allow the same video to be played on my screen saver! I wish you and Microsoft would listen and ask us the customers, I have so many basic features we need but no one listens to us.
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes from ZDNet summarized this new Extras announcement perfectly:
"Yesterday I got word that Microsoft was releasing some more Ultimate Extras for Windows Ultimate users. Even without opening the email I just knew that these new extras would fall into one of two categories:
Disappointing
Mega-disappointing
I wasn’t wrong. They fall squarely into the latter category."
At the one year anniversary of Ultimate disappointments perhaps Microsoft should consider announcing that they -- despite the best of intentions -- are simply not able to deliver on their promises of exciting new Ultimate features.
A reasonable recompense might be a heavily discounted future upgrade path for Ultimate suckers (such as myself) or a coupon for other Microsoft products. Such a move might take some of the pressure off AND deliver a better consumer perception of Microsoft marketing.
At this point, barring some form of meaningful restitution, I will be VERY reluctant to EVER jump on the Microsoft vapor-ware bandwagon again.
--Other than that, congrats! Vista appears to be following the long-established Microsoft pattern of Chump (post-beta-post-RTM) improvements and is making deliberate strides toward the next Windows release.
I agree with jdhall1010 that a discounted upgrade path to Windows Seven when it ships would be nice.
But then again I've always thought that allowing a second install of Vista even if it was Vista Basic was a good idea to, just to slow Linux adoption on older networked machines... and show some trust to the end user, as Ultimate has a pretty hefty price tag. Even if this offer was a limited time offer for registered users of Windows Ultimate only that would be good idea.
However the Sound Schemes is a really nice idea and is hopefully the start of adding more value to Ultimate!
Good Job.
Thank Cris very helpful article.I will try it
Thank you a lot for post.
Two sound schemes? Dreamscene...again? Comeon Microsoft. This is lame, lame, lame. High School students could easily do better than this effort. I paid $150 extra for this? What a joke.
Is it just me or would anyone like an extra that would make Vista run in an XP like mode, Windows Classic just doesnt cut it, as it looks like Windows 95! Sometimes I just long for a more cutomizable desktop... I mean what if I miss the Start button or have a fear of Circles!
Having said that even in Windows XP I was always kinda nostalgic, for example my "Control Panel" view in XP is always in the "Classic View" not the newer "Category View".
What Ultimate needs is basically something like some of the basic features of WindowBlinds combined with TweakUI... so that a desktop can be really customised.
Hey you guys should come out with a version of vista that is "IT person friendly".
Something that doesn't show all the random alerts and is not as secure as the "average person" version. I think you guys would sell alot more copies to computer people that way.
My personal experience is that most computer people don't like to mess with it because of those different security things.
The new extra's did not show up in my update. Where can I go to download them manually?
Considering the price and lack of real 'extras', I think it would only be fair of MS to provide Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) to Ultimate users as part of the Ultimate updates. After all, Office isn't cheap nor is Vista Ultimate, and with the lack of extras and cost of the operating system, having something others have buy is an 'Ultimate Extra'.
I consider the current process/direction MS is going, to be 'Unfair Business Practice' to the end user. Ultimate is offered and advertised as giving Ultimate users more for their money. Where is this 'more' at? Looks to me like MS took more and gave less!
everyone that feels like you have been ripped off buy buing vista ultimate please rember one thing if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck then its has to be a duck! for those that are not smart enough to get what im saying then for the love of god dont buy the proudct.the only way to get your money out of vista is to do as this simple post says.
im am not responsible for anyones action other then mine.
this post complies with my rights and responsiblitys of the little guy.oh spell check not on because vista does not do it automaticaly.lol
cant wait to beta test yet another windows, but from what ive seen they may want to keep testing this one.
