For those of you happy to wait, sit tight because SP1 will start downloading to PCs automatically beginning in mid-April (remember, this happens only if you have your Windows Update configured to automatically download updates and SP1 will automatically download but not automatically install). But if you want to get the benefit of a year's worth of improvements right now, go check Windows Update today (hit the Start Menu, All Programs, and select Windows Update).
If in running Windows Update you do not see Windows Vista SP1 listed, there are a number of good reasons for this (eight, in fact -- see the whole list). Below are a few of the most common reasons why you might not see SP1 on Windows Update:
I've received a lot of requests for more detail about the driver situation this last month, so I want to share some more information here. We spent the last couple of months looking closely at reports of driver problems on pre-release builds and, to be safe, we held the public availability until March.
We've completed our analysis and are happy to report that many of these issues were fixed between the release candidate (RC) and the final version. We identified a small number of device drivers that may be problematic after an update from Windows Vista to Windows Vista SP1. Check out the list here; we'll keep it updated with any additional drivers that we identify. As a result, we spent the past month or so working with our partners on driver updates for these issues. Of these drivers, most already have updated versions on Windows Update and are available for download now as optional updates. In a few weeks we'll start to deliver these updated drivers to PCs automatically via Windows Update.
We're working with the providers of the remaining devices to get updated versions of the drivers to our customers as well. In the meantime, Windows Update will recognize PCs with drivers that may be problematic and postpone offering SP1 to those PCs until it has installed corrected drivers or other applicable updates. Either way, Windows Update works to detect whether or not your system is ready for SP1 and not offer it to you until the time is right.
Those of you who find that SP1 isn't offered over Windows Update even after updating all your drivers, but would still like to download it can access our "standalone installer" from the Microsoft Download Center here. Windows Update will help ensure a better experience, so if you do choose to visit the Microsoft Download Center make sure that you read these KBs before installing.
Looking forward, we're also getting ready to begin releasing the second wave of SP1 languages in April. These are the other 31 languages that we haven't released yet.
Some users encountered an issue last month when installing the Servicing Stack Update (KB937287). We've investigated this carefully and learned that it occurs only in certain rare situations. Specifically, this happens because the update needs to be completely installed before a restart occurs, but something caused a reboot during the install. While the update was carefully designed to avoid many of the common reasons for an inadvertent restart during installation, this issue was caused by some that were not caught. By temporarily suspending automatic distribution, and in making a small change on our Windows Update server, we believe we've largely eliminated this problem (our support call volume reflects this). We did find one aspect of the problem that was exacerbated when the update was installed using automatic updates. For this issue, we're planning to release an additional update before we resume automatic distribution of the Servicing Stack Update.
So what does this mean exactly? For those who've already installed the Servicing Stack Update or are waiting to install SP1 until Windows Update offers it to you automatically, you do not need to do anything at all. But if you want to install SP1 manually and haven't yet installed the Servicing Stack Update, you'll find it on Windows Update when you visit.
I know this post sounds like a lot of guidance, but we would rather over-communicate to reduce any surprises.
In sum, we are extremely pleased with Windows Vista SP1 and the benefits it offers our customers, and we look forward to hearing about your experience.
Nick Nick,,,,,, Pls Nick :D
Italy waiting YOU!!!
Thanks.
Congrats to Vista Team for making it available on Windows Update.
Thanks ! to the Vista team for making the SP1 available on Windows Update.
dovella, Windows Vista SP1 is being released today only for English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese. As the article states - the rest of the languages are to come in April.
- Brandon
ok,i guess wave1 is gonna be available on april 9,just like rumours say. Thanks Microsoft, keep up the good work e improve Windows Vista
hmm still i cant see sp1 via windows update
Zod, today's release (explained in the above post) is the first wave release of SP1 for Windows Vista - taking place *today* not April 9th.
For the second wave of SP1 consisting of the remaining Languages - this will occur in April. No date has been announced. I would take the rumors with a grain of salt unless you hear it here first.
Dear Brandon :D
now I know even better than you, with all sympathy of the world. :D :D
Congratulation and THX ;)
bruta, we listed the possible reasons as to why you may not be seeing SP1 available on Windows Update in the above post. Make sure you are running one of the 5 released languages and have all of the prerequisites installed.
sorry with wave 1 i meant wave 2 with the resting languages. Nevermind, let's wait for april, hoping it not to take too long to be available

Hej! I use Ultimate in English with a German LIP and do not see SP1 in WU. Does that mean WU detected a driver issue on my computer but does not tell me about it or is it not yet available on European WU servers?

omg sp1 has been removed from microsoft download center
bruta, no it hasn't: the link to Microsoft Download Center in the above post for the standalone installer still works. You can also check it here too:

@bruta , tou can download to softpedia
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Signatures-Updates/Windows-Vista-Service-Pack.shtml
dovella, I would recommend downloading Windows Vista SP1 from Microsoft. I've included the links to Microsoft's Download Center above for downloading SP1 which work perfectly fine.
thx guys, finaly we have sp1 oficialy
hi all, i hav just finished wiv SP1 took me 2 hrs to complete it and i can see alot diffrence bitween RTM and RTM SP1.
MS gr8 work
is there any comment on IE8 B2
I'll be installing either late tonight or early tomorrow.
I need to do some more research on compatibilities. Specifically: ZoneAlarm AntiVirus; Adobe Photoshop CS2; Quicken 2001; CCleaner; RegSupreme; Paragon Drive Backup.
1000 excuse me Brandon
dovella, no worries! I just want to make sure people get the right download for SP1 (and that's from Microsoft) since I cannot vouch for 3rd party downloads. :-)
itss me, nothing has been announced in regards to IE8 Beta 2. Beta 1 was just released in the last couple weeks though. You can visit http://blogs.msdn.com/ie for more info on IE.
thomasadams.
Just installed SP1 here in Germany without any problems. So it is available in Europe.
Windows Ultimate 32Bit, SP1 around 70 MB, took less than an hour to update. Just rebooted once and then it was finished.
(To be on the safe side, I disabled my Anti-Virus program while upgrading.)
Perfect Brandon !
Thanks to all you for your job, know that it has been difficult.
Thanks
I have been trying to download the SP1 update and I continue to get an error Code 8E5E03FB - which I cannot find anything on anywhere on Microsoft.com and very little on the internet. I did run it as an "Administrator." I did run with and with out the firewall enabled. I have tried 14 times.
It gets to 13% of the download every time and then poops out and tells me about the error.
mosqueda, how are you attempting to install SP1? Via the standalone installer from the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update? What version of Windows Vista?
If you can give me this info - I can try and see what might be happening.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium
AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 Dual Core Processor 2.80GHz
4 GB RAM
32 Bit OS
FYI - 5.3 Windows Experience
I have been trying via the Windows Update tool.
Thanks - Dan
SP1 runs great! Yet still no 64bit drivers for Microsoft's own hardware (fingerprint reader and associated keyboards/mice). I looked up the legal contract for using the Vista logo, and it requires both 32bit and 64bit drivers to use the logo. I think they should remove the Vista logo from the MS hardware site, since if it's not in SP1, it's not coming at all...
I have SigmaTel audio drivers that are in conflict with SP1. Therefore, SP1 is not available to me via Windows Update.
SigmaTel was purchased by another company, and driver updates are solely in the hands of OEM's now (Gateway, Dell, HP etc.).
I do not expect Gateway to update this driver any time soon. When will SP1 be fixed to work with my old SigmaTel drivers?
Please blog about addtional update to KB937287 problems when will be ready. Thanks
sroussey, your statement about "since if its not in SP1, its not coming at all..." isn't quite correct. SP1 doesn't deliver any new drivers within the service pack itself. There aren't any drivers in the service pack therefore that doesn't mean 64-bit support won't come for your hardware down the road.
There are many devices from Microsoft Hardware that support 64-bit. I'm running some myself (like the LifeCam VX-7000). I don't quite think removing the logo from their website is needed but perhaps a better implementation on their website as to what is Certified for Windows Vista and what runs on 64-bit systems. I'll throw this feedback their way.
vasek7, we discussed KB937287 in the above post. See above.
worked fine with auto update.. but isn't a service pack suppose to fix issues? went from using 650mb ram idle to 1gig... i'll be be switching back and a very bleak outlook for ms.
Please respond thank you--this is a very serious matter-tell someone in charge that Stanford and UC Berkeley professors and students will begin a class action lawsuit very soon if this sp-1 update problem is not fixed for vista bus users ASAP-what have you people done to this new OS...? updates should install almost no matter what if you can start the computer...!!! I tried installing sp1 standalone--it worked on 1 machine-not other! Q
Just wondering, I have windows vista business 64 bit on my at home pc right now and I dont see the update. Is there a tester program that will tell me I have incompatible drivers. I'd like to know if its just me being 64bit or a driver thing .
It's insensable that m/s gives a vista error code for sp-1 and then one cannot find it on ms sites-at least not easily nor corrections--what gives here with this non-sense...? ie. "error code 0x8e5e0147" w/ this url, "http://go.microsoft/fwlink/?link id = 101139"! so, someone should be fired or at least retrained for this mess--and its happened in the past before-no error code, and bad url. dr Q
drqc terry, for support issues with SP1 please go to the following URL (this isn't the proper avenue for technical support):

Thanks,
Brandon
According to KB948343 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343) SP1 will not show up in WU if version 11.0.1000.1091 or earlier of the Symantec Endpoint Protection driver is installed. I have run Symantec LiveUpdate and the driver version is still 11.0.1000.1091.
SP1 does show up in WU though. Should I be concerned about installing SP1 before a new driver is released? There are no information about this issue on the Symantec site.
it's not the proper place--any place at ms is right for these issues--they need to be made aware everywhere--this site announced sp1-I announced it does not work on vista bus 32 standard machine--your a part of the vista team-tell them to fix it! and the site you sent me to asked for $60--have ms lost it's mind--bad response--doesn't matter it's oem!
I've been a ms beta tester in past-bad OS! Q
I just installed the offline SP1 installer without any problems and it took about 30 minutes.
However, I was asked to activate my copy of Windows which I had not previously been asked prior to the upgrade. On trying to activate the product key online I was informed that it was "already in use". I tried re-keying in my product key and repeating the process to no avail. In the end I used the phone system method and this worked, although I have no idea why. My copy of Windows is a Dell OEM Vista Home Premium Upgrade from MCE. It has only been installed on one machine.
Any thoughts as to why
1) I was asked to activate Windows when it was already activated after the SP1 upgrade
2) The phone system method worked but the internet activation method didn't
3) There seems to be no mention of this problem anywhere.
A job well done! It installed easily. It took only 2 hours for it to install on my PC. Keep up the improvements!
Dear Mr. Nick White,
We are Uyghur (Uighur) and Microsoft Windows users. We were very excited when Microsoft started to support our language and script in its Windows Vista operating system. When the Beta version was released, we tested it extensively, found many bugs, and reported them to Microsoft. Later we were told that these bugs would be fixed in its official release. We found the same bugs again in its official release and reported them again, and were informed that they would be fixed in SP1. Now the bugs are still there in SP1 and we are very frustrated.
This serious bug is about the Vista's support of our language and script - Uyghur (Uighur). (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uyghur_language for more details about the language and script.)
Our script - Uyghur (Uighur) is an alphabetic script with 32 letters, based on Arabic and written from right to left. In Vista, Microsoft's support of our script comes with a font named MS Uighur, an input method and a keyboard layout.
In Unicode standard, national and local standard, one of our letter, F's unicode number is 0641, but Microsoft have used 06A7 instead, resulting in serious incompatibility issues.
Prior to Vista and until now, we have been processing our script on Windows 98, 2000, and XP with third party fonts, input methods, and keyboard layouts, using unicode character 0641 for our letter F.
With this serious incompatibility problem, we have been in great difficulty in migrating from previous versions to Windows Vista. We hope Microsoft and the Vista Development Team take this issue seriously and help us using Microsoft products easily and comfortably by fixing these bugs in time.
Sincerely,
On behalf of Uyghur (Uighur) people
A Uyghur (Uighur)
Oh--FYI--I tried to find the sp1 for bus ed at ms update site and it did not show up for my machine either, but 3 updates did show--all related to sp1--and they failed with no info on why or how to fix it--just that nonsensical error code and bad url--in other words you should post fixes ASAP for your OS known probs (oem or otherwise)and have diagnostic programs available for other issues. stop working on system 7 fix "system 6 and sp1" first! dr Q
jamieburchell, I am going to relay your feedback to some folks at Microsoft who might perhaps be able to shed some light on what occured. But its good to hear you were able to activate your copy of Windows Vista.
drqc terry, you are right - my job is to relay things to folks who can fix these issues and trust me, I am relaying everything I can. However I cannot help you fix your issue personally and I gave you the support URL in hopes of a Microsoft Support Technician being able to help you out.
drqc terry
I'm pretty sure Microsoft have tested the Vista SP1 installation on all versions of Vista on many types of machines and with many hardware and software configurations.
Just because one of your computers does not want to upgrade to SP1 doesn't mean the Service Pack plain does not work.
Your request to "tell them to fix it" is unlikely to yeild any results for a number of reasons:
1) You have not given any specific information about your hardware and software environment for anybody to analyse (being an ex beta tester I would have thought you would be aware of this). Simply stating it doesn't work is not very usefull to anybody.
2) You have not directed the support query through the proper channels.
3) Bugs take time to be found, fixes take time to be created, tested and released through the propery channels.
4) You may be part of a very small percentage of people with a system configuration that was not anticipated or more likely you probably have drivers that are incompatible with SP1.
The fact that the last few Windows Updates you attempted to install were unsucessful indicates to me that your system has a problem and it is not "COOL".
Try running some checks on your machine, hard disk, memory etc. If you have the time and knowledge try re-installing Windows, installing the latest drivers and Windows Updates, and then reapply the Service Pack.
It was not clear from your earlier post if you found the official Vista Service Pack release from the Microsoft Download site.
It can be found here:

Just a thought if you couldn't find the SP1 update on Windows Update this may be because:
"Windows Update will not offer SP1 to computers who have known device issues."
Although if you computer is not successfully installing updates anyway there could be another issue.
Brandon, or anyone else, I'd really appreciate help installing SP1. I first downloaded the x86 version from the Microsoft Download Center, then ran that once with and once without administrative privileges. Both times I got error 0x800700D. I Googled this and was advised to uninstall any programs that have virtual drives running. The only such program that actually has a drive mounted like that is DAEMON Tools, so I uninstalled that - to no avail.
I then tried through Windows Update, but I keep getting Error Code 0x8007002. I deleted the entire contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore folder and the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, but this hasn't helped either. I've restarted many times, but that hasn't helped either.
I've also tried running the standalone installer in Safe Mode, but I got the same error code. I ran a registry cleanup with TuneUp Utilities 2008, defragged my registry with Auslogics Registry Defrag, but it still won't install.
I have AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition installed, but I'm not sure how to completely disable it; I have tried quitting the control center and then ending the various AVG Resident Shield and Updater processes in Task Manager, but SP1 still will not install. Any help, Brandon, or anyone else?
To read the description of why I wouldn't see SP1, I would think "a small number of device drivers" means that a small number of users would be affected. Imagine my surprise when SP1 didn't show up for me (mine's a pretty stock machine). But looking at this "small" list of drivers, right at the top is RealTek '97, which is the codec for built-in sound for a TON of motherboards. Really boggles the mind how difficult it is to get Vista cleaned up when the SP has supposedly been done for over a month now; do the months just fly by in Redmond? Seems like the answer from the Vista (and Windows Home Server, they of the data corruption bug that gets fixed in JUNE) team would be a resounding "Hell ya, and it's awesome like that!"
Just wanted to let you know I found the update, installed it in 48 minutes, and I am up and running again.
The only issue I encountered was needing to reinstall the drivers for my on-board sound, otherwise it went in nice and smooth. Now we'll see how much of a difference it all makes!
rkpatrick - If I am reading the issue with RealTek correctly the issue is with an older driver version. There have been two updates to the driver since that time.
I will note that I have a board with RealTek on-board sound and I had to install the latest driver after installing SP1. But that was an easy one to address.
To Jamie, when I deployed SP1 to a Vista OEM/Business/HP here at the office back a month ago when I used the TechNet WU registry thing, it too kicked out and needed a revalidation of the license code. I had to call in as mine as well had the same error. Calling in was no biggie, but I saw this, and posted it back in to the beta forums reporting this.
No issues since that time.
"If in running Windows Update you do not see Windows Vista SP1 listed, there are a number of good reasons for this"
But perhaps the most valid is that Windows Vista SP1 is not ready yet.
I understand the position with repsect to the problem drivers but it seems to me this is quite a widespread issue (in my case Sigmatel). I have just spent 1-2 hrs figuring out that I have one of the problem drivers hence why windows update isnt offering me SP1. Neither is it offering me an updated new driver. In my book that is not a good customer experience and a bit of a waste of my time.
I'm new to Vista, and I must say, I'm not very impressed. Its probably fine if you have dsl, cable,or satilite, however for those of us that dial up is the only thing ava in your area. It runs much slower on dial up than xp did. I would greatfully go back to xp except my lap top died on me and I had to buy a new one only to find that no one in this town carries anything except vista on there new computers. I wish you could please, try and do something to increase the speed of dial up or make vista work better with dial up so speed time isn't so slow. Its taken me well over 2 hours just to install java...yes you heard correct java something that only took me 29 min. on dial up with xp has taken over 2 hours on vista with the same dial up speed. Anyway I'll stop complaining because I'm sure its not going to make any difference except that at least I've spoke my peace and gotten it off my chest.. not to mention no lesson like a bought lesson.
help anyone i have vista 64 bit and could you give me a link to download service pack 1 for vista 64 bit version
muxay373, here is the download link to Windows Vista SP1 x64 from the Microsoft Download Center:
FYI for all: if you are needing technical support for the installation of Windows Vista SP1 - please go to the following URL:
You will NOT be charged for support calls relating to the installation of SP1. Please be sure to choose Windows Vista SP1 as the option from the choices listed.
found it thanks
I have a newer PC, that came with Vista. Yet, I cannot install Sp1 because of "driver problems". I understand Microsoft's position on this issue, and have been a proponent of Vista for some time now.
However, from this day forth, Vista is functionally stabilized on my PC. There will be no further updates.
My next OS will not be Windows.
I just did this workstation here as a matter of fact, went to the Control Panel and it says I have "three days until automatic activation" in the control panel and when I go to reactivate it says "the product key is in use"
I'm now two for two with HP workstations demanding Windows activation post install of SP1.
Woohoo! Been waiting for this. Time to uninstall my RC and install the real SP1. Thanks you guys (especially for fixing the slow copy/past networking issue.
Funny considering I came here looking around for a release date for SP1 yesterday...
Consider me another who's having problems with SP1 appearing in their Windows Update. The only conflicting drivers I have are the Realtek AC'97 drivers. Though the only thing mentioned in Microsoft's Knowledge Base article for AC'97 drivers is:
"For x64-based computers: Alcwdm64.sys - version 6.0.1.6242 or earlier"
Well, I have version "6.0.1.6282" (thanks to a Windows Update a couple days ago, although now sound enhancements do not work, hoping SP1 will fix that). So either I shouldn’t be having a problem or Microsoft should probably make another revision in their article.
I can wait another month until this gets sorted out, no point in downloading 700 MBs worth of hotfixs I already have installed when I can download 70 MBs through Windows Update (whenever it becomes available). Btw, I think its great Nick and Brandon are taking time out help people with their problems.
Also, just to save some people some time, I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64 with no language packs installed. Cheers!
I have a small thing so far. for the most part I think sp1 installed smoothly except for an smbus driver that windows update had no drivers on hand for(this was a p4n diamond motherboard with intel dual 830 processor). a Second would be probably because of that driver since when i did an performance check on my sp1 pc it said that it could not be completed because of a"error being reported on the system, driver,or other component[wish we knew]". I have 2 other pc running vista from lenovo and have not updated to sp1 but they seem to be sp1 denied as well and being proved that things go wrong I dont need to try updating them for a bit. ;)
I am trying to download and install Vista SP1 for Windows Home Premium and I keep getting error Code 800704C8. Any suggestions?
How to merge SP1 with Vista DVD?
C'mon. So can I install a Service Pack 1 Standalone if SP1 is not offered through updates or can't I? If I have two languages installed: English and one of the other 31. I don't care that I can't install my language pack today. I will install it later, when it's available. I want a Service Pack today. If the interface turns to English automatically, I've no problems using English until that time. But can I do it straight away? Or do I have to necessarily uninstall my language? Or is it only a helpfile problem - which is not a problem at all? Or will a system run into any problems? I go and install the standalone to check. What do I lose?
Typical microsoft. People who dont use english OS
have to wait. Stupid.
I am using Vista Ultimate - why can I not see SP1 on Windows Update???
thefish73, the above post lists off the possible reasons as to why you may not be seeing Windows Vista SP1 on Windows Update. See above.
Installed last night with no problems. Booted-up smoothly this morning.
John.
i have non of the issues listed above and i still cannot see it in windows update.... do i have to wait or something?? i have my automatic update set to tell me when updates are available and to let me download and install when i feel like; can this be a reason why i dont see it in WU??
I got one question. After installing SP1 things seem to go really slow, even though my computer shouldnt have any problems runing vista (dual 2,4Ghz with 4gb ram, 64 bit os). I tried to reboot a few times, but still the same. Vista even started pretty slow compared to normal. Though, after loging into safety mode, cleaning up temp-files (in the windows folder, prefetch, in temp files in user profiles etc) and then rebooting, things got back to normal. Has anyone experienced i similar problem? Perhaps prefetch-files didnt get deleted (can not say much about this, as I didnt check after installation and after rebooting a few times, some files most likely got created). It seemed like my PC ran on a really slow CPU (slow boot, startup program started really slow etc) Though, as its not a problem anymore, Im more than happy, just curious what it possibly could have been. Any suggestions or people with similar experiences?
Too bad I dont have much details, otherwise I could have made a decent bugreport / problemreport.
Keep up with the good work MS, and dont let all the whiners kill you Nick :)
I have installed vista sp1 today now i have no sound and my dvd drive does'nt work nice one microsoft... I can see that testing really worked now how can i uninstall it.

So now that SP1 is out where are the Remote Server Admin Tools (RSAT) as promised as we can no longer install the old GPMC?
Dave
djclarck, here is what I found out:
"David Shen - MSFT wrote:
Hello,
Thanks for let me know your feedback and I fully understand your concerns. The RSAT package for Vista SP1 RTM should be available in April. Thanks."
Well, I installed Vista SP1 after seeing it on Windows Update last night.
In retrospect, not my finest decision.
What a disaster! It exiled all of my Nvidia drivers to the Bermuda Triangle..they're simply all GONE.
Okay, no big deal, go to the Nvidia site, download the latest drivers, install and nada.Zip, Zilch, Nothing changes.
Windows Update keeps telling me I have an available update to install, an Nvidia update dated 12/7/07..which is OLDER than the Nvidia drivers I just lifted off their site.
Either way it doesn't matter, the install fails...every time, without fail.(Pun intended)
Good Ol' Code 80070005...every time.
My windows experience is now a 1.1 fer chrissakes!!
On a C2D 2.66,with 4GB of System Ram and a 512 MB Nvidia 7950GTX video card.
Uninstall this disaster and I *still* have no video drivers, can't even reinstall the latest from Nvidia after the uninstall and reboot.
Hell, I can't even install the monitor driver from Dell.So I'm sitting here with my lovely 24" WFP2407 monitor at some asstacularly low resolution.
SeppDietrich:
This might be useful information regarding the windows error update code:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2116632&SiteID=17
I downloaded it via Windows Update, and got a bluescreen on the third part of the update. Took 5 hours to "revert to previous". So I downloaded the package version, and tried that. Same bluescreen. Same hours.
I read somewhere (can't remember where) that having Nokia PC Suite installed will cause this. True? Or could it be some hardware fault?
(Incidently, it didn't give me an error code, just "your computer has recovered from a serious problem". And SP1 has now disappeared from my Windows Update. Strange)
Installed SP1 on my work PC via remote desktop last night and my laptop this morning.
Both desktop and laptop are doing fine.
Iggy23, I dont believe having Nokia PC Suit installed is enough to crash the SP1 installation. I have PC suit installed and the installation itself went fine. Though, I know from experience that I need to remove "N82" from removable devices in device manager manually before I reattach it to the computer, otherwise Bluescreen. Perhaps thats what happened in your case? Too bad such a thing can cause vista into a bluescreen...
Perhaps try a cleanmgr and delete other temp-files before you try windows update again? That might make sp1 reappear. If not, Im sure someone else here will have an answer :)
Hi, since installing SP1 I've had issues with my wireless internet. It would say that I only have "local access only" and I cannot access the internet nor can I access anything on my LAN, not even my home router. Although it says I'm connected to local, I'm not at all. Is there anything I can do?
My wireless device is an Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG.
Is there any way I can uninstall SP1? It will not let me uninstall it via Control Panel. Do I need to reformat?
Thanks!
hi_im_nysa,
Sounds like you have a hardware problem like this one: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2852824&SiteID=17
In short, try to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them once again. (newest version preferably)
This is how you reformat, but I wouldnt recommend it before trying other options:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2993059&SiteID=17
ehm, not reformat, but uninstall sp1.. I need sleeep hehe
No one seems to be addressing the "problem" drivers, specifically SigmaTel. As Fatalah mentioned any SigmaTel "driver updates are solely in the hands of OEM's now".
Sony don't want to know, neither do Microsoft! This is stopping a large number of users from installing SP1.
Can anyone help?!
e vero feliciano e da parecchio che non ti beccavo :D :D :D
Feli mi raccomando mettici pure tu la buona parola per il 18 APrile
Windows Update does not make SP-1 available for my Gateway GM5478 (Core 2 Quad Q6600 with an Intel G33/G31/P35 PCI Express chipset, Vista Home Premium 32-bit). Naturally I ran into a roadblock trying to troubleshoot any problem device drivers from the beginning. I have a Sigmatel High Definition audio codec driver version 6.10.5405.0. Not being a comuter engineer, I assume that the driver number being lower than that listed means that it is an earlier version of the driver and therefore not compatible. Of course, Gateway has no available updates. IDT won't make updates available except through OEM sites. Intel's site just about requires a degree in engineering to navigate. I will have to either open up my box to identify the motherboard or go through Gateway automated support to prod them to make updates available. This is what is really killing Vista.
THANKS !!!! i want to thank you nick for this service pack and to all the windows vista team i'm from south america sorry for my english, i installed the sp1 and my computer is more faster and more responsive also it have better performance, congratulations to all and again thanks for this great service pack.
basically i cant see sp1 on windows update. I have the 2 updates that are required for sp1 and i do not have any of the products listed although i do have a creative sound card but it is the creative live! 24bit so it cant be the cause of the problem. I am running windows vista home premium btw.
You may be prompted to activate Windows Vista on a computer on which Windows Vista was already activated by a Volume License or OEM installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;931573
That may be the cause for the reactivation request for Vista.
Both of mine are OEM or VL, and both machines have Quickbooks 2007 installed.
Have installed with a few problems, but notice a few posters have had real difficulties. Is this normal with a service pack and why?
after SP1 was installed - Outlook (2007) kept crashing.
restored to restore point and outlook is fine.
I checked on Windows update but it doesnt talk of SP1. I am using a preinstalled version on HP tx1301AU model. The language is english. I do not have any early sp1 releases too. Just wondering .
Also, the prerequisite updates never came thru update . The update normally si working fine downlading updates everyday
Any tips?
Dear Nick and/or Brandon, please tell whether future Vista service packs will be slipstreamable or not. :)
i m Using HP DV2324EA with Vista Home Premium this SP1 will work for my System?
i m Using HP DV2324EA with Vista Home Premium this SP1 will work for my System? & i can't see vista SP1 in my windows updates wotz the resone?
someone,
You can't slipstream Vista currently and I don't see that feature being available any time soon. See the following blog:
http://blogs.technet.com/kevinremde/archive/2008/02/09/i-can-t-do-what-why-can-t-i-create-my-own-slipstreamed-installation-of-windows-vista-sp1.aspx
i m Using HP DV2324EA with Vista Home Premium this SP1 will work for my System? & yeh in my windows vista update i can't see SP1 why is that?
i opened Windows Update Clicked on Check UPdates but i can't see SP1 there why?
i m Using LAPTOP HP DV2324EA with Vista Home Premium.
SP1 wont show in the update, and I don't have it yet?....
When will SP1 in Turkish be released? I wish I had Windows Vista in English. I don't want to wait more.
Does SP1 fix the memory card reader drivers taking over 100 of the CPU? The drivers don't seem to be interrupt driven! While reading a flash card II, you can't even move the mouse.
Thank you, Vista team! Please tell me whether Sigmatel Audio Drivers have updates or not. I've just updated my Intel driver but when I checked WU, it still showed up-to-date Vista, no sign of SP1!
Brandon,
In response to vasek7 you note that you blogged about KB937287 above.
However, Nick notes, "For this issue, we're planning to release an additional update before we resume automatic distribution of the Servicing Stack Update."
I suspect vasek7 was wondering as to the timeframe of this additional update. As someone who was bitten by this bug, I will be waiting for this additional update before upgrading to SP1.
Having been forced to rename my pending.xml file in order to regain functionality, I am hopeful my ability to upgrade will not be affected. Any further suggestions as to how to proceed for those of us in this situation?
I'm not being offered Vista SP1 on my new Dell XPS M1530 laptop. As far as I can tell I have two pieces of hardware in the problem list, but the driver versions I have seem to be OK.
Sigmatel stwrt.sys - I have 6.10.5614.0 (doc says must be > 6.10.5511.0)
UPEK tcusb.sys - I have 1.9.2.111 (doc says must be > 1.9.2.99)
So my question is, is there any way of finding out exactly what is stopping me from being shown SP1 via Windows Update? I'm tired of looking at driver versions now.
Westy, we will post more about the timeframe on KB937287 returning to automatic distribution and the additional update in the near future.
In choosing to rename your pending.xml file - according to KB949358 - the following recommendation is made regarding your system after naming the pending.xml file (and choosing to use this method to troubleshoot):
"You should use this troubleshooting method only if you intend to back up data and to reinstall Windows."
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358
Because renaming the pending.xml file creates a level of uncertainty with your system state - I simply cannot say whether an upgrade to SP1 will be successful.
buraq01, in April - SP1 will be released for the other service packs as stated in the above post.
l3lueMage and greeny, the above post from Nick lists off possible reasons as to why SP1 isn't showing up for you.
i have english version & UPdated driverz But still i can't see SP1 :S
To All,
In needing technical support regarding your installation of Windows Vista SP1 - please go to the following URL and choose the bottom option that says "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (All Languages)":
You have a variety of options you can choose for support - all of which will NOT cost you any support fee. I repeat: support for SP1 will NOT cost you anything - as long as you choose the correct option for support.
This blog is not the appropriate avenue for seeking technical support answers. We can only point you in the right direction in hopes of having your issue taken care of.
However I am relaying as much feedback you give here to the folks internally at Microsoft regarding SP1 so your feedback is most certainly not falling on deaf ears. I will continue to relay feedback moving forward.
I would like to learn if you could help me from a technical point of view. I have followed the procedure as to click on "Check for Updates' on Windows Update in order to learn if the so called Vista Sp1 update will be listed but at the end of the procedure, the update is not listed but Windows Update states "Windows is up to date" but it mentions some optional updates. Within the INSTALLED updates I found the Microsoft Service Pack (Sp1) 936982 its installation date being March 12 2008. The Windows Edition (pre-installed) in my computer is Windows Vista Home Basic. The issue here is that I do not know if it is 32 bit or 64 bit. Under system states 32 bit operating system, therefore I assume it is Vista 32 bit. I am NOT a hi-tech person and I am totally a NEOPHYTE in this field of knowledge. I would like you, if you would be so kind to do it, to explain step by step in standard language the procedure to follow in order to learn the technical issue that is preventing my computer from downloading this new update. Apart from that, I have read all of the 8 issues that could prevent Sp1 from downloading BUT there are technical issues that sincerely I do not understand as to "language packs" (where are they located and how do I know the language pack or language selected by my computer?}, update drivers (which ones and where are they located?) and I also would like to let you know that I have symantec (Norton Antivirus) running in my system. Another question, is this update really necessary and relevant or can my Home Vista-based computer function normally without said update? I am aware this is an extensive message but I really needed to explain the complete panorama. Thank you so much. Yours Sincerely. Sherfiles.
Haven't had the chance to try this yes, however my cousin tried it and reported back to me with his opinions and results on SP1:
Boot up time - Increased
Shut down time - Decreased ever so slightly
Copy/Paste time - decreased
Seems a little quicker when opening folders
I.E (Internet Explorer) opens a little quicker (once cached)
Gaming performance - the same (I only tested FEAR though) Didn't really expect any change anyway.
Disk defragmenter has changed a little, allowing selection of volumes to defrag instead of just defragmenting all drives.
Network taskbar icon response time - the same, still very slow.
All I can say is if you were waiting for this before installing Vista, you wasted your time, it's changed nothing really.
Again, they are the opinions from my cousin, in which I trust him; as he does have a good knowledge. I will give my opinions once I have the chance to check it out. I have tried previous BETAS, but none impressed, except for faster file copying.
Regards Jason.
Any advice on the Outlook failure issue after SP1 ?
Did the Vista SP1 update on one of my laptops. It's working great. Seems to be faster.
Then tried to update another laptop. Getting this error. tried 2 times and still getting the error at the end after about 45 minutes:
Installation was not successful
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 was not installed on your computer.
Error code: 0x80041315. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101139
sherfiles, I would go to the following Microsoft Support URL:
Choose "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (All Languages" and get in touch with a Microsoft Support Agent who can talk you through investigating why SP1 may not be showing up and installing for you. They will be better at providing assistance to you than I would here in the comments of our blog.
gigadigit, did you follow the steps listed from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101139? You can also get a hold of Microsoft Support to help with your issue here:
i have the same problem as gigadigit
I'm a bit curious how the auto-update is going to work. Let's say that a month from now, the driver(s) that mask SP1 from WU still aren't updated. Will auto-update still not install SP1? And if not, will it be silent about it or prompt the user in some fashion that there is a SP but the machine's configuration prevents it from being installed?
In my case, it's Realtek (and I updated on WU the day before SP1 was released, so they're as up-to-date as I think I can get them) holding up my update, but seeing as my machine is a development box that doesn't need Creative Labs hardware to play CDs and watch Channel9, it's frustrating that WU is hiding an entire OS service pack from me. In the end, I'll probably go ahead and d/l the entire 400MB installation just to get this thing over with, but I don't have a lot of confidence in the thing given its development history.
Russieb and others regarding Sigmatel drivers.
One of my machines had the Sigmatel driver file stwrt.sys with a version less than the one required on the Microsoft article. I simply uninstalled the Sigmatel driver (from Programs and Features (formally add/remove programs)) and let Windows install the default Microsoft driver. The files mentioned in the article now do not exist on the system and my sound works perfectly using the standard driver. The service pack was offered to me and I installed with no problem. This basically means using an older driver but for now until the OEMs release a new one this seems to have done the trick.
I see no problems with SP1 on my machine. I did notice the download of the first 66mb file took a long time and got hung up at 13% for like 30 mins.
btw, some good info and links @ <a href="http://www.personafile.com/products">http://www.personafile.com/products</a>
hmm, I got SP1 installed in the end ... simply by running Windows Update and checking for updates several times, eventually it decided I could have it!
My installation of SP1 failed. It got stuck at the screen "Stage 3 of 3. 0%" The mouse and keyboard were also stuck with no HD activity (i waited 2 hours). When I re-powered the computer, it would always return to this screen.
I had to do a system restore. I found a KB article 949358, which has a patch for this issue, but my PC says the patch is not appropriate for my system (standard Dell PC from 2004) when i tried it.
After I finally got back up, I disabled Automatic Updates as SP1 showed up again!!
Since installing SP1 my battery tray icon has disappeared. I'm on a laptop and need to know my battery status. When I go under the Taskbar Properties->Notification Area the option to show Power is grayed out. Has anyone that install SP1 lost their Power option as well? Any ideas how to get it back?
Problems experienced so far:
Tablet PC mouse cursors are gone. The useful right-click circle and the special pen mouse cursor, even though enabled, are no longer functional.
Pen flicks no longer work.
MATLAB7 shuts down instantly on startup.
Ok, so I download the SP1 standalone executable for my Vista Ultimate install and try to run it. It fails because apparently my language is not supported? Funny thing is, my languag is English. Unless "English (Australian)" is not considered English????? Have you stupid Americans limited English to the "English (United States)" language pack?
What a joke. I'm switching back to Linux.
Hi
Here's a pretty serious bug which prevents installation of SP1.
I have one of my graphics cards disabled in Device Manager because its faulty (its not easy to remove because its liquid cooled and connected to my working graphics card.
Installing SP1 re-enables the device, rather stupidly, meaning that when in reboots I get a BSOD. Vista SP1 then uninstalls itself (I have to intercept and load in safe mode).
How am I supposed to get round that one then ?(without performing surgery on my box)

Part1:
I'm looking forward to the sp1 pack to correct a variety of problems I've encounter on only one of my systems. Oddly enough it's the highest end system I own. I'll post comments in parts.

SP1 offline installer worked on both my (desktop) machines without problem. Went to the installer after Windows update failed to authorize. (I had previously installed SP1 RC1, so had to uninstall. Once that was completed, Update still didn't offer SP1. No drivers were in conflict, machines are plain vanilla, one running Ultimate, the other the next step "down"). Installation time ran a shade under 2 hours. So far: a solid service pack. No issues with software (yet) or hardware.
What a joke.
Microsoft releases Vista SP1 hot on the heels of the legal problems associated with the Vista hardware certification snafu and machines that already run Vista won't be able to run Vista SP1.
Looks like more legal woes on the horizon...
I can't see SP1 in Windows Update. I imagine it's b/c I installed a bunch of languages that I didn't really need but was tired of seeing these language "extras" constantly showing up in Windows Update even though I hid them.
I tried to uninstall ALL of these unwanted languages all at one time, but it seems like you can only uninstall one language at a time. So I'm going thru the laborious effort of uninstalling each language and restarting the computer after each uninstall.
In a previous post, I had asked the question if I would need to uninstall each of these questions if I'm running English. The response was that I wouldn't have to, but I guess I do -- unless of course the real reason for not seeing SP1 under Windows update is because of a driver issue.
Oh well.
windows update vista sp1 failed! 1,2 and 3 of 3 updates all ran fine except for long time to process. 62% was very slow, then after 3/3 100% we get this error pop up screen: "SERVICE PACK DID NOT INSTALL. REVERTING CHANGES" we have new alienware intel core2 duo, 4 gb ram, vista home premium. ran the update direct from ms website. then ran msconfig with unchecked services and disabled norton. same issue. plz help! thanks!
For users who are still waiting for Windows Update (WU) to offer Vista SP1, keep in mind that Microsoft KB948343 lists eight reasons why WU won't offer Vista SP1. While several posts list driver issues, that's just one reason. Another reason is that you need to install all recommended and important updates offered by WU before Vista SP1 shows up in Windows Update. For example, I had to install a Windows Defender update yesterday before Vista SP1 showed up. For more insight on this KB article, see my Maximum PC blog: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/no_vista_sp1_via_windows_update_we_have_the_solutions
Jamie Carl, looking into your issue. Will respond when I get a answer.
shroydog and higgman, I suggest heading over to Microsoft Support and talking with a support agent about your issues about installing SP1:
Be sure to choose "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (All Languages)".
jaxim, I believe you do have to uninstall each Language Pack individually. For future reference, if you don't want all the Language Packs to show up under Windows Update - instead of installing them all you can simply right-click on each Language Pack and choose to "hide" it. I do this to avoid seeing all those Language Packs.
I apologize to all who are experiencing issues with Windows Vista SP1. Remember you can visit Microsoft Support and get help (free of charge)if you are experiencing any issues related to the installation of SP1.
I also continue to relay feedback in to the correct folks as well.
Mark, that is a awesome post you have up over at Maximum PC! Very cool. Much appreciated and a great resource as to why SP1 isn't showing up under Windows Update for users.
P.S. Just subscribed to your personal blog.
kennethpletz,
you could try to insert your office cd/dvd and repair the outlook installation.
Dammit! You American guys limit SP1 to only American English huh? So English-New Zealand or Australia is not considered "English"??????????? How weird!
I'm losing my mind.
I want the new SP. I followed instructions on checking updates...its not "there" and my updates are fully up to date. If I go to my "control panel", it doesn't appear that I've got SP1 running.....why can't I get this update?
Help!
Part2:
Now both the thinkpad and gateway run quite smoothly on default vista settings. All run with the same antivirus including the XP partitions. Kaspersky 7. There are no major software packages instsalled should be causing the system performance issues.
The Precision has the highest amount of power and laggs way behind even the modest gateways settings. Dell support has pushed the lagg as a slowness issue due to vista. hunting for answers many other forums concluded that removing vista and putting on XP resolved all slowness and the system performed with superior performance reverting to XP. I'm hoping not to have to do this. After all I paid for vista to keep upto date, and learn the product for professional reasons.
Moving forward all remarks are strickly about the dell P690
When I ran the system bench marks, I hit high marks with an final mark of 4.7
(I'm unable to specifcally note which item is the bottle neck at this time.) all other marks rated 5.
System memory use hovers around 1.2 gb. I stopped some services that prove no pratcial use for me. (unable to list at this time.) This boosted performance with only a small margin, not enough to get excited about.
Alot of the problems I'm having are already listed to be addressed in the service pack1 update so I'll summrize the one's I've encountered and update later if performance improves post service pack1.
1. Extreme latency on bootup, 5 minutes or more. [I can reboot login and 5 times or more with ubuntu on the gateway.],
a. latency during login. 3+ minutes until the system is even close to working correctly. even after waiting many minutes post boot prior to login.
2. file copying. Drive to Drive, same drive file moves,
3. deleting large file stores, or lots of files latency.
4. network copying slowness (this is not a problem with ftp http downloading.)
5. Often aplications will stop responding. Most of the time it's Office 2007 (outlook, word and excel)
6. poor shutdown response. Often takes 10+ minutes to shutdown. Sleep mode take 5+
This is just the major issues. There's other side items that I can't recall at the moment.
Either way, I'm hoping that the above will be retified with the SP1 update.
-Note: It took 3 hours to apply to the sp1 to the Precision from the downloaded service pack since I need to apply to more systems post testing.
More to come. Re: Post update testing.
After reading all the above problems, I have come to the conclusion that SP1 update is not worth the trouble.
LET'S WAIT FOR SP2 OR BETTER YET, WAIT FOR THE SP3 UPDATE. THEY SHOULD HAVE WINDOWS VISTA FIXED BY THEN.
wondering_why,
consider all windows users with the number of posts above... you cant judge sp1 by reading about problems here. I guess for like 99,9% the patch will go smoothly. Vista is working perfectly fine here. Though, regardless of OS or program, new software upgrades / patches some people will always have some issues. Regardless, SP1 should make vista even better so if you decide to stick to the old version, then be my guest :) Its a long list of bugs that got fixed.
Now I got this error message from WU while downloading Vista SP1:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330)
Installation date: 3/20/2008 5:51 PM
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80010108
Update type: Important

Please help! Anyone?
It was a seamless upgrade and thanks to Vista team for that . I in particular was hiding KB937837 , fearing my PC will blow up if I tried installing it but ultimately I had to install it before I got my hands in Vista sp1 .
So far , no problem , touchwood :)
Hey Brandon, I don't expect a support response from you on this one, I just noticed how hands-on you are and thought this info might help if passed through your channel:
Same Problem Error 80070002:
Oddly enough I have installed SP1 on this machine before, just on different installations. The current installation is the cleanest by fer.I have installed SP1 during the beta stage and then after a clean install I had the RTM loaded on this machine via the registry hack.
Now, after another clean install a month ago, I am unable to install SP1, I've tried both Windows Update and the standalone, both give me the same exact error.
Joyous Error 80070002!
I have tried every suggestion at this link here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366
I have elevated my permissions to my Windows folder and attempted to
repair the contents of my C:\Windows\winsxs\Backup folder per another
forum and still no go.
I have the latest drivers running, SP1 isn't supposed to show up in Windows Update if you have a driver conflict, and it does show up.
Only program that I foresee that may cause conflicts is AVG antivirus, on my previous installations of SP1 I had Avast Antivirus installed.

Manh, Do, English is English spoken in all over the world - not just "American English". Meaning this covers the UK, Australia, etc. If you are running English and am unable to install SP1 then its most likely due any one of the other blockers listed in the above post.
COG93rd, there are a few reasons why SP1 may not be showing up for you in Windows Update. Please see the above post from Nick which explains these reasons as to why SP1 may not be showing up.
Meetloaf, thank you very much for the information and yes I am forwarding this on to the proper folks here at Microsoft. If they let me know of a solution to reply to you with - I will post back to you here.
thank you Brandon. Got it at last. Sorry for my bad temper!
After SP1, is vista showing the actual RAM?
If you have more than 3GB RAM, is SP1 reporting it correctly?
Hi team
I am getting a laptop ready for a customer that has Vista Ultimate on it. It doesn't appear to have SP1 on it. I have got all the downloads done that appear to be necessary from the Microsoft Updates website. However, SP1 was not among those updates, and now the updates report all complete (but no SP1). I downloaded the standalone installer and tried to use that. Even though I have English installed as the main language, I still get that annoying message saying that I don't, and that the install is terminating. Surely Microsoft does not consider the NZ flavour of English to be outside the catgorisation of "English"? Please advise asap. Cheers.
Peter_NZ, English covers all English (U.S., UK, Australia, NZ etc). If SP1 isn't showing up, its most likely due to one of the other blockers listed in the above post.
For installation issues, I suggest getting a hold of a Microsoft Support Agent free of charge:
Brandon and Nick, check this out. Vista SP1 seems to have major issues with some Logitech mice. (http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/windows-vista-mouse-problem-pointer-position-not-accurate/2610/)
@ashish nope :/ still 3.25
Whew. I eventually updated three computers (a Gateway GM5478 with a Core 2 Quad, an HP DV9000Z with a Turion 64, and HP Pavillion a1350n with an older Athlon 64). All went well, even though the update was not shown as being available for all three. Thanks.
The update to SP1 went smooth today. It was not avaiable to me via WIndows Update. So I downloaded the standalone version. It updated the system.
1) The RAM is now showing 4GB ( actual installed ) Earlier it shows 3.3 or something )
2) The notebook is performing faster. The startup, shutdown, the hibernate and wake up from hibernaet is faster than before. Yet it does not match my Windows XP sp2 which has Half the ram.
3)I thought this update may improve the score of the machine, but it has not.
4)IE 7.0 is not faster as was said.
5) Application opening speed is marginally faster.
6) Application closing is faster.
Will post more points as I notice them.
Problems...once again!
I'm not complaining, but Microsoft best get their act together...and quick!
I have defended Vista since it was released, but with problems like this, I find it hard to defend.
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/179871/vista-sp1-horror-stories-start-to-appear.html

Nick Turkey waiting you please be fast.
U say in april other sp1 will published.
15 april?
I can't get SP1 to install on my 16GB SSD because the original Vista retail has the Windows folder at 14.5GB. The update requires 2GB of space.
I tried to junction the winsxs folder off to another HDD in desperate attempt to free up space but got an Windows Update 80070011 error. This error is not documented and is definitely related to folders junctioned to another HDD or partition. Upon google search this doesn't only applies to SP1, but other Windows Update as well.
Are there any stuff in the system root can be cleared for some space? The winsxs folder is 6GB and it contained a lot of AMD folders when I use an Intel processor.
I am running Vista Ultimate & cannot see the SP1 Installation through Automatic Windows Update
I checked for all the 8 causes mentioned on the Microsoft Knowledge base & I do not seem to have any of them
Can you guide me on why I am still not able to
install SP1 through Automatic Windows Update
Prashant
I installed SP1 on vista Ultimate two days ago, I've noticed a nice speed improvement.
The comments section on this blog should probably be disabled, as they seem to attract frothing zealots and people wearing tinfoil hats.
Thanks for all of the hard work! I've been using Vista full-time since Beta2, and I've really loved it.
Whilst I sympathise with those who are having problems, I expect that they are only a small proportion of those who have installed SP1 and we were warned that there may be a few Driver related problems.
I installed Vista Home Premium x64 three days ago. After several hours of updates, it was working flawlessly.
Motherboard: ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+
Memory: 2GB Corsair TwinX
[Note: The motherboard came with all the Vista x64 drivers on CD]
Experience Index: 5.5, 5.9, 5.9, 5.9, 5.2
I started Vista Upgrade yesterday afternoon. It did not show SP1, so I checked the Forum, found the 8 possible reasons, and went through them sequentially. After I updated the nForce drivers, SP1 was accessible.
SP1 download started, and as previously mentioned by some above, I got the BSOD in stage 3. I re-booted, tried the SP1 download again, and it installed.
My initial impression of Vista were lukewarm, but I am beginning to like it as I become familiar with performing the various tasks I did with XP.
A couple of wish list items:
1) Programs executed when a CD/DVD is inserted: I cannot specify a non-Microsoft program as default.
2) I like to organize the Start Menu into folders. Since the menu items are in several directories (which were difficult/tedious to find), it is quite cumbersome to do.
deployed sp1 on 614 computers so far on our network. we have only had one driver issue.
we just reinstalled the driver and now we have no issues. great job windows team.
Will Microsoft make a CD version of the Vista-SP1 available?
I installed Vista SP1 on my HP Pavilion laptop this AM. Started up fast, finally able to shutdown, restart BUT I had lost my internet connected. No wireless or wired connection. I tried everything even contacted HP and they were about as helpful as if I had gone to a clothing store to ask for help. Completely useless. I think Zone Alarm Security Suite may have trashed something so I restored my system and will download the latest ZA file and try it again. I have been frustrated with Vista ever since I bought the laptop. Hibernate function works every other time; shutdown? Never until it crashes then tells me to install an update file already installed. Sorry for ranting but this has been nothing but one frustrating experience and HP has never solved any problem.
Ron
Oh man, SP1 was a disaster... After I installed it my computer started shooting laser beams out of my webcam and cut my dog in half, the DvD drive shot out of the side and ejected the disk with enough force to cut through the wall of the house and murder my neighbor by severing his head with the disc, and now the police want to know why aliens are attacking because my wi-fi somehow sent a signal to them and told them they smell funny. Apparently thats an insult worthy of war. Who knew? Apparently these are all just small driver related issues, and I expect this to be fixed in the next patch. Hope they hurry because the webcam is pointed into the earth, and its only a matter of time before the laser burns its way through....
I have an HP Pavillon bought about 6 months ago that came with Vista installed. Today I was offered the SP1 update automatically. After 2 hours and 3 restarts it declared it had failed. It has taken a further 1 hour plus to restore - after reading the blogs about drivers I do not have the rest of my working day to spend researching what incompatible drivers are in my machine thank you - to whom do I send the bill for my time please?
Update to my earlier post and comment to ronryoer - when myy HP restarted it also had no internet connection and my phone connected to the router also did not work. After spending about 30 minutes trying to source the problem restarting my router and vonage adapter I finally turnede everything off and rebooted the machine - everything came back up again - Oh and I had MSOFFICE problems also after the failed update. My bill for time is growing!
I have Vista installed on an Acer laptop (okay, it was cheap...and I killed a lot of bloatware) and installed the SP1 without any problems whatsoever. No device driver issues, no language issues, nothing. If anything, it is loading Vista and programs faster, and shutdown has sped up as well. The process did take around an hour and a half in total, from start to re-boot. I have auto updates enabled, and even the update that was causing problems (KB938287) did not cause any problems for me. So far, so good.
Specs: Athlon 64x2 tk53 CPU, 1.5G RAM, Radeon video x1100 chipset.
I bought a new hp pavillion dv 6000 with Windows Vista Home Premium.
sometimes when I turn on the laptop I notice that after I see the microsoft corporation bar it stops there and goes black and I have to turn off the computer..it has happened twice already..but when I turn on the computer again it runs fine..could it be some kind of driver thing that needs to be updated? Somebody suggested performing a repair using a CD that sometimes comes with new laptops. However my laptop came without the Windows Vista CD that contained Windows startup files. It only has a partioned disk or HP_Recovery Disk.
Please help me.
pat, please contact Microsoft Support (free of charge):
Please choose "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (All Languages)".
i have to agree with Pat. hour and a half locked out of my computer for it to get to 100% on stage 3 of 3 to fail. then another hour to revert back.
i can't check my event logs because they haven't worked since about a week after i got vista. and just to note... i updated all of my drivers before attempting the SP1 install. i do not have time for this at work just because i want fixes to the annoyances of working with it...
I tried installing SP1, but received error 800736CC, "Installation was not successful".
The install had been running for about 20 minutes before the error. The screen had gone blank a couple of times, but the system hadn't done any re-boots yet.
My questions:
Do I have SP1 partially installed, which wouldn't be good?
Did the error occur before any changes had been made?
If changes had been made, were they backed out?
I've re-booted and everything seems ok. Should I boot again and go back to a restore point prior to trying to install SP1?
Pat,
What Brandon said about getting free support: You cannot get free support from MS if Vista came preloaded on your HP product. At least, that is what the link to the website indicates.
joriah, I completely understand you and pat's (and others) frustrations - which is why I am recommending you contact Microsoft Support regarding your SP1 installation failures as the Microsoft Support Agents can help identify and fix the issue.
I am also continuing to relay this feedback here at Microsoft as well.
Brandon: Thanks for the information on the drivers with SP1. As I did a new full clean install (since I have access to it) of SP1, I thought they would have put more drivers in it. Indeed it didn't recognize my FastTrack RAID from an old HP, but I found a driver and put it on a thumb drive, so all is well.
I bought MS hardware before Vista came out since I thought MS would lead the way in getting driver updates. Indeed my webcam got one quite quickly. So I got 50%.
I figure it is never coming since MS licenses it from Digital Persona, and they create the drivers, and they made 64bit ones that HP distributes for its laptops with it builtin. Last year. Seems like a business choice, not technical.
But every time I go to the hardware site and see that "Certified for Windows Vista" logo, it bugs me. MS would not let anyone else break the terms of use for that logo. And the fingerprint reader happens to be the closest one to the logo!
Other than forgetting my password for this site, and almost all others (that fingerprint thing is handy), Vista x64 just jams! Smooth and fast and pretty. Like it should be. :)
ronroyer: you are incorrect. We are offering free-of-charge support to *anyone* who is having issues installing Windows Vista SP1 - even folks like pat who may be using a OEM copy of Windows Vista that came with their HP laptop.
Again, *anyone* can get free support for installation issues of SP1 by going to the following URL and choosing "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (All Languages)":
hi ppl
i kno its WV SP1 forum but i need help about HDD, i m using a smaller and old HDD and my windows is installed on that HDD but now i bought new one, can i install my that windows on to new HDD or i need new windows DVD for that HDD thanx.
another thing can i get rid of windows UAC???
sroussey, I have a Microsoft Fingerprint Reader too and also running Windows Vista x64 so I am as interested as you in seeing x64 support for my fingerprint reader. I am going to do some investigating and see what I can find out about this. You have a MS webcam? Which one? :-)
Update to Pat, re router, etc. My router was working fine as was my desktop. I thought it might have been my Zone Alarm program. I have updated that program but since then, I just learned on an HP forum that somewhere HP is not recommending an SP1 upgrade if you have NVidia hardware on your HP. My network controller is made by NVidia but I am still going to try to install sp1 again and see if upgrading Zone Alarm helps. Anyone else hear about NVidia product problems with SP1
Thanks! I clicked on the wrong link! DUH! Sorry.
Ron, no worries what so ever. If you have any questions - be sure to ask!
With the release of Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008, don't forget to try out the Microsoft Assessment and Planning tool (formerly Windows Vista Hardware Assessment) to help you assess hardware and device compatibility of your machines for OS migration!

I have been waiting semi-patiently for this release, but I think I will wait just a little longer. The difference in size between the auto update and the one currently available is just a bit much. Plus, when even Microsoft is saying that one works better than the other, I do take notice.
Hi, I purchased Vista Ultimate RETAIL LONG ago when Vista was FIRST released(Over $300), I now want to be able to download the Vista SP1 integrated Image since Microsoft made it so hard to slipstream, is it possible for me to order a , SP1 CD and only pay shipping and handling?
I do NOT want to resort to illegal downloading websites(and possibly get bad code) that is why I bought the genuine product for in the first place, I re-install quite frequently, I build my own computers and want the SP1 image straight away, and do NOT want to have all the updates and the 30-40 minutes of a SP1 , install.. Please Microsoft work with us... Allow people that have legally purchased your product to download or order, DVD's of the product.
I am the owner of BlazingPC.com and myself and quite a few of my members have already upgraded to SP1 with out issues at all.
The only problems I have heard on my site are the ones who used the stand alone installer instead of Windows Updates.
Windows Update users have reported no issues.
IF we Owners of Vista have lost our Vista DVD's will you replace them with Vista SP1 DVD's?
First of all I want to say that this SP1 should be withdrawn from the update as it is not fully tested.
The problems I have experienced by instaling is:
After 1st unsuccessful instal it had a problem with Realtek and I had to spend my time to update to a new driver. So the instal failed.
2nd time after successful download (again) just when the instal started I got the blue screen and the sistem restarted.
When it got back instal went "smooth"
Not we could speculate that sistem is faster (a bit) but out of 2GB of RAM my compuetr is constantly using 57% while before SP1 instal was using 15% in the same state.
I would gladly say; wait until you are sure you need this pack yet as by now as with everything concernig VISTA things did not go so smooth
Good luck to all
Re: recent install. I updated Zone Alarm and tried installing SP1 again. All went well. I now have access to my network. So, the problem all along was that I had not updated ZA. If I do run into any other problems, I will leave a message.
You can remove SP1 by using either Programs and Features or the command line. Note, however, that you cannot uninstall SP1 offline using any method
So did the genius who released to auto update have any idea of what ordinary, non software/computer savvy people are going to do when the upgrade nukes their internet connection?
If so would it be to much trouble for that genius to tell Microsofts own technical people how to fix it.
Because after over 8 hours on the phone to both MS tech support and my ISP tech support (costing £1 a minute) I still have no internet access. It took over 3 hours of arguing before MS support would even recognise thet SP1 had mistakenly nuked my copy of Vista home premium tagging it non-genuine and not allowing me to validate.
Now all you on here may be technical bods, and a small issue like losing your prime source of income for a day due to an unprofessionaly released flawed update may be a bit of an adventure, sorting out the glitches may even be a source of fun. But for the vast majority of PC users we have no knowledge of what happens behind the keyboard, and trust the manufacturer to only automaticaly download to our PC's stuff that isnt broken.
Of course we do have system restore, but there is the mnor issue in that you cannot restore back past the instalation of SP1, Another great brainwave..
so we cant uninstall, cant roll back, cant use our PC's ....
Good service pack MS great job if your going to screw something up do it well and make sure that it cant be simply undone</ends sarcasm mode>
This release isnt just flawed, it is for the ordinary computer user a complete and utter nightmare
After installing the last two updated that were listed as optional updates (one was an ATI Unified sound av stream driver, and the other was my Logitech USB STX Communicate web-cam). After installing these updates, the SP1 was available via WU.
Installation took about two hours (gasp), but went without a hitch. I *did* notice that the installation reset my dual-monitor setup to the opposite of what I had it set for (monitor 1 was motor 2, and vice-versa) and the desktop wasn't set to be extended to both monitors - not a big problem, but it might confuse some users.
Also, one sidebar gadget didn't work properly after install, namely, my "WebGuide" gadget. TIP: uninstall it, exit the sidebar, then reinstall the WebGuide gadget, and all should be well again.
Windows Vista Home Premium x64
Dear Brandon
I have Vista x32 English version and Korean, and few other language packs installed.I'm wondering when the SP1 is comming out for other languages and can you tell me how to get rid of these annoying language packs please.
Thank You
Hi Daniel, yes we plan to release SP1 for the rest of the Language Packs sometime in April.
Can you elaborate on your question about getting rid of the Language Packs? Are you wanting to uninstall the ones you have installed or hide the ones that show up you don't want under Windows Update?
People, i'm new to this forum but through gizmodo, i learned that SP1 is now available for Vista. Immediately followed the links to microsoft then found it. My wife's new Sony Vaio runs on Vista, which is where i of course installed it (my corporate laptop still runs on XP).
I noticed that right after installing SP1, boot up and shut down time was longer. What I did was to shut down and turn on the laptop 3-4 times then the problem went away. More than that, it actually boots up faster now, shuts down faster too.
USB thumbdrives get detected faster as well, so with my 120gb portable hard disk.
Will try to install mobile phone softwares (Nokia and Sony Ericsson) later today to check if the performance improves (they used to be so slow connecting via Vista).
I installed Vista SP1 as soon as it came out and it has been great. To all who say Vista SP1 has slowed down their pc, did you know SP1 erases superfetch data, so it will be slower for the first two or three days, but then it becomes faster. Overall it has increase performance in all areas. Great job Microsoft! Keep it up!
Microsoft should be forced to mail out integrated copies of Vista SP1 to Everyone that has purchased Vista Retail, that asks for one or Offer a link to an ISO image that can be burned to DVD(With SP1 already integrated into Vista).
The new slipstream process is was to much, work and confusing.
I purchased Vista, had had not idea that MS would pull this where we could not slipstream service packs, or make it so difficult that the "average", or "moderate" user could not perform the process.
Post Mortum followup
Part 3: (Parts 1 and 2 can be found in previous day)
Three key items I was hoping to see cleared up were not.
1-System boot time improved very little.
2-Login time improved probably 20% (guessing) from 3+ minutes to 1.2 minutes. The slowest part is still the gadget bar.
3-shutdown time still very poor. Taking over 5 minutes or more. no application errors, or other applications noted to be holding up the process.
It's painful to think I may have to reload this box to see if it corrects somthing that may be wrong from the dell OEM installation. I have too much time invested already trouble shooting my own machine. It's like I bought a BMW with all the perks, expecting power but put water in the tank! Eg. Vista.
I'm at a loss for words, and remain skeptical about Vista... Currently I don't recommend it to my clients, I buy machines with XP pro for all my clients and will continue to do so until Vista can be justified.
Thoughts?
hey thanks i got sp1 this morning and its running great
processer:intel pentium 4 cpu 3.06GHz
memory(RAM) 702 MB
32 bit os
Compaq Presario
and running windows vista ultimate
Don't know if this is the right place but there is something going very wrong after SP1.
When I write a backup from a server to the extra HD in my vista machine, everything the server writes ends in chache. It takes a while to fill the 8GB of my workstation but after that the log file shows a lot of:
Event: 2017
The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the server reached the configured limit for nonpaged pool allocations.
And the workstation can not be reached on the network any more.
Did this on a daily basis befor SP1. So I assume (I am rather convinced) that it is SP1.
I first installed it using Windows Update, which seemed to go smoothly. However:
- Windows Media player would no longer play any music downloaded from Napster (i.e. DRM protected). I got the error code C00D11B1.
- IIS stopped working. I traced this back to the Windows Process Activation Service which was failing to start. Removing it and reactivating it didn't resolve the problem.
I tried uninstalling SP1, but the problems still existed. I tried reinstalling using the full download instead of Windows Update and the problems still existed. Finally I removed it and used system restore to get back to where I was before I installed SP1 and after a wasted day I'm finally back where I started with a working machine but no SP1. I don't have any of the listed problem drivers.
I'm afraid I'm not interested in customer support as I'm not prepared to waste any more time on this and risk breaking my PC again, but please get the many issues with this service pack sorted before it installs automatically.
Just loaded SP1 via the standalone and I have had no problems with Vista Activation. I was unable to do it via windows update which was pretty strange as i have installed all updates that have been available and all drivers are up-to-date.
I think this may be to do with all of my updates not being logged as i deleted the files from the Software Distribution Folder as described in the following MS Support article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798) due to a previous MS Win Update hanging.
My upgrade seemed to go ok, i dare say time will tell - hopefully i will have no more probs with wireless networking when i come ot of sleep mode - fingers crossed!
One thing i have notice is that my Volume, Network(Wireless) and Power Icons have all disappeared from the system tray upon reboot and are now Disabled(i.e. greyed out) when i attempt to enable them via right-clicking the task bar and select properties! I would have thought that SP1 would have remedied this particular problem as i have infrequently had hassle with this since i bought my laptop last August. I usually dont rant but this is really is starting to annoy me and should have been fixed- I have noticed many complaints elsewhere on the web about it! Fortunately i have enough knowledge to resolve this myself and don't have the fear of editing the registry that some people i know do.
During my Standalone upgrade i disabled AVG (Free Version) and Zonealarm SS(v7.1.248).
My spec is below:
Dell Inspiron 6400
Intel T2130 1.86GHz
2Mb RAM
Vista Ultimate (32-Bit) [Now SP1!!!!]
PS: I have been having problems with 'Denon Music Manager' for my Denon CHR-F103 ever since i bought this vista laptop, it worked fine on my old XP laptop but i cannot get it working on vista. The app will start to load but will hang as soon as it attempts to access the device via USB. This prevents me from transferring downloaded Music to the Devices HDD. Anyone know if SP1 fixes a list of known issues with software and if so what software it will fix. is there a list anywhere? Can you register your problem with MS anywhere, free of charge?
Cheers,
M_M
SP1 install update: All is going well but a strange thing happened. Last night, I put the computer into hibernate mode, went to bed, and this AM, the laptop was on at the log in screen. Not sure if there was some program running in the background but very strange indeed. Any ideas as to what could have caused this?
PPS: should have mentioned the fix for restablishing the system tray notification items mentioned above is:
1. run 'regedit.exe'
2. goto key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify'
3. delete keys 'IconStreams' & 'PastIconsStream'
4. start task manager, go to processes and kill explorer.exe
5. go to applications in the task manager, hit new task and type 'explorer.exe'
6. explorer will now reboot and your icons should return.
G'day
Any clarification on SP1 not being offered on WU when your computer does NOT have any of the "bad" devices listed in the relevant KB? PLEASE? I'd really like to give SP1 a spin but I don't see it. Darn... :-(
thanks
thomasadams: if you read my post above i fulfilled all necessary requirements but was also unable to install via WU. I thought that this may have been due to having to remove all my update info. around dec time to solve problems i was having with an update i was trying to install. The MS article stated to fix this by deleting all previous update info!!
I downloaded the standalone version of SP1 and it seems to have installed ok-ish....so far only one small glitch that i know how ot resolve. Download tool 20mins on a 4MB connection.
Further to the GENIUS post earlier
Lets see if we can take this a step further
Microsoft GENIUS at work
Release software that cannot be uninstalled or rolled back unless on line-
Make part of that update possibly create a problem with getting on-line.
Release the update 2 days before a 4 day holiday weekend so those who computers have been SCREWED up by this cant get any support after day 1
Tell the unfortunate user, to replace his ethernet card and possibly his router because it isnt VISTA's fault, despite everything working great before the download, and 3 laptops with XP working fine on the router.
When the guy with next to no knowledge points this out, and ALSO POINTS OUT the router is communicating via the ethernet with the PC but the VISTA network wont talk back to it decide that you are going home and inform him you will call on Tuesday to resume looking at this problem.
GENIUS PURE BLOODY GENIUS...
What next?
Design another crap update ? THE ONLY SAVING GRACE IS THIS WHOLE SORRY AFFAIR IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE SCREWED MY PC AND I CANNOT GET ON_LINE I AM IN NO DANGER OF RECIEVING ANY MORE OF YOUR CRAP.
Now delete this and send me a warning.. for telling the truth about how YOU at Microsoft have screwed this up for many of us ordinary PC users
Hi Last night I went through the steps outlined in the URL http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=947366. I used msconfig to stop non essential applications and features from loading and disabling virus scanners and firewalls. I had downloaded the full update. I had installed all the latest drivers from the HP website.
This ran and failed in exactly the same way as previously.
To Ron - my router was definitlyt affected by the SP1 instal. The other XP computer on the network lost communication and my phone stopped working with the vonage adapter reporting that the configuration was incorrect. The later attempted install using the full download did not have that effect - but still failed.
What is the official word to those of use (and it seems that there are a fair number of us, and the number is increasing), who do not see Windows Vista SP1 under Windows Update and have verified that none of the reasons (8 of them at last look) do not apply?
Will there be an SP1.1 to fix this, or will Microsoft be refunding our OS expenditures?
Have had Vista SP1 installed for two days now the only problems seen is that windows mail opens slow now and when closes wants to do a error report and also my documents folder wants to lock up and takes 10 minutes to close it down when this happens task manager wont open to close it down ether the documents folder problem is on two computers and also have a usb drive that one pc wont detect now other wise on the plus side firefox opens faster the pc seems less slugish I fill that this is on the right track and see some fixes coming to fix miner problems .
To Brandon - My Vista PID is registered 89578-oem7332157-00061 yet the support website does not recognise it as valid and they want $59.
This is the email support option.
postmortem follow-up from previous day.
After spending more time looking to tweek my system further. I found found that curiously the file synchronization service was running. I shut it off as well turned off the gadget bar. My system performance increased with a major boost. I am already running Speed boost on a 2gb memory stick, and dedicated it fulltime some time ago. I'll be testing to see if the system is still as responsive without speed boost. It still seems redicoulsy slow, and I've watched processor and memory performance. Neither really go much higher than 12%-%20 avg across 2 duo core xeon's. The memory improved too by stoping the file sync. Since I'm not on a domain it makes no sence to have this service. It would seem that the OS bottle necks it's self in such a way it stops, looks both directions then stands in the middle of the road speaking "Which way did it go George!" before actually allowing the process to continue. I still get frequent application hangs, "Not responding"
I'm still disgruntled about improvements I was anticipating. Today I plan to get another Sata Drive, and pull the current to load and test from a scratch load.
vista team, if you would like to review this with me. A large community of Dell Precision 690 owners suffer from the same issues I have, but have reloaded with XP. I've been holding out hope for SP1 to fix issues, but the situation has improved little.
AlexJ, I suggest contacting Microsoft Support about your issue:
pat, it would be unwise to post your PID here in the open forum. I also note I do not believe your PID you listed is valid either - there should be a sticker on the bottom of your HP if it is a laptop or somethere on the side if its a desktop that has the right PID. Should be 5 sets of 5 numbers and letters.
AKAJohnDoe, no such thing as SP1 1.1 in the works. As Nick states above: "We're working with the providers of the remaining devices to get updated versions of the drivers to our customers as well". Once updated device drivers are available and we're confident they will provide a good experience for users installing SP1, then it will be offered to folks with the currently blocked drivers after they update to the new drivers.
Oddly, was happier with Vista before the service pack...That sounds harsher than perhaps it should, but the service pack has made dvd/mpeg2 playback unbareable. It sort of "stutters", but not in a performance lacking sort of way. It's more like it plays 2 frames forward, and 1 frame back, producing a siezure inducing experience.
Newest nvidia drivers don't help. I'm kind of at a loss, particularly because I can't update/rollback WMP updates separately, nor can I override the selection DSFilter selection for the codec, which is particularly obnoxious because ffdshow plays the files just fine in graphedit. It's just one problem, but its a deal breaker for me and probably many others.
And its not as if I'm using some sort of crazy set up. It's a fairly typical performance machine - Intel P35, q6600 and NVidia 8800gt, running with more RAM than god on a clean Vista install. How can this happen? Why can't I remove ONLY the offending filter? Why isn't WMP a separate product after the EU went to court? And when will this sort of thing be fixed?
Other than this one small, but CRITICAL flaw I've been quite pleased with Vista, although its embarrassing to be going around defending it in the work place because its worked so well for me, only to come in to work today and declare I had to roll back the service because it wrecked my experience.
*sigh* It's getting harder and harder watch your back MSoft...Media player really is in sad shape. I thought that after XP, you would have at least fixed it so that I can open IFO files without having to close and re-open the player so that I can seek in the video...still, I keep using it...and now this...
"AKAJohnDoe, no such thing as SP1 1.1 in the works. As Nick states above: "We're working with the providers of the remaining devices to get updated versions of the drivers to our customers as well". I think you are missing my point.
I have researched the drivers and all the other documented reasons SP1 may not show up in Windows Update and none of the reasons apply, yet SP1 still does not show up in Windows Update.
AKAJohnDoe, I got that ;-) I am also looking into it with folks here at Microsoft as well. If I find an answer - I'll be sure to send it your way.
Let me know if there's anything you would like me to check on my PC that may be other than what Windows Update expected to find. I'm just a couple of miles away.
How do i delete the language packs already installed on vista?
It will be good if it was some simple software thing.
hey brandon my cousin installed windows vista ultimate with sp1 how do i know its genuine and please dont post any links ok i get confused i want step by step instructions
I'm giving up installing SP 1 for now. I have tried installing it 5 times now, and it ends with the same result.
The install process proceeds upto 100% of Stage 3 and fails for unknown reasons, and reverses all changes.
After the last reboot,I get a message saying installation was not successful, with a link to this KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366. I've tried all the steps in the article, including un-installing my AV software (AVG) but to no avail.
The system event log has many entries like :
---
Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB936330 (Service Pack) into Staged(Staged) state
from Servicing.
This has been a disappointing experience, after waiting for SP 1 to fix Vista.
Getting ready to "upgrade" to XP
Sp1 in :)
Onboard PNP sound out :(
At least I have a 2nd sound card to handle vista's short commings. Laughably it's my 4 year old creative card that still works rather than this years motherboard!
I might need to upgrade back to Win2K or heaven forbid Ubuntu.
HP have suggested that I restore my system to factory default, install SP1 then reinstall all my applications and then restore my data. I calculate that if all goes smoothly that will take a whole day and even then there is no gurantee that SP1 will work. If I had that kind of time to spare being a self-employed person I would be on my horse in the mountains not stuck in front of a computer!
Daniel Kim, you can completely uninstall Language Packs in Windows Vista by doing the following steps:
1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Under "Clock, Language, and Region" choose "Change display language".
3. The Regional and Languation Options panel will pop up.
4. Click the "Install/Uninstall languages" button in the middle of the panel.
5. A new window will appear for installing or uninstalling the Language Packs.
6. Choose "Remote Languages".
windows vista ultimate user254, could you elaborate on what you mean by "genuine"? If your cousine installed SP1 either through Windows Update or the standalone installer from the Microsoft Download Center - they its genuine. But if your cousin installed it from a third party download site - I cannot nor can Microsoft vouch for its integrity or if its genuine. I recommend *only* installing Windows Vista SP1 from either Windows Update or downloading the standalone installer from the Microsoft Download Center - no where else.
Brandon, not trying to steal thunder or thread cap here, but here is the solution that enabled me to install.
Again, I was receiving ERROR 80070002.
FIXED:
OK everyone, this takes several hours, but I'm up and running in SP1. Supposedly I had a/or some corrupt files/components somewhere. Here is the method that worked for me:
Turn off Windows features
================
1. Click the Start Button, click Control Panel.
2. Click Classic View on the left pane, and double click Program and Features.
3. Click "Turn Windows features on or off" on the left pane.
4. In the Windows Features dialog box, uncheck all of the check boxes, and then click OK.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Now, let's perform the following steps to repair the corrupted files:
NOTE: In-Place upgrade will not remove any installed programs or files on the computer. It just repairs the system. However, it will remove all of the installed updates, we need to run Windows Update to reinstall them after repairing. In addition, I suggest backing up useful files to avoid data lose...you never know what will happen.
In-Place upgrade (Repair install)
==============
1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.
2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.
3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:
If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.
If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
a. Click the Start Button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the start search box and then click OK.
Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.
b. Click Install now.
4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista. Please make sure the edition of Windows Vista is selected correctly.
If the above steps finish, please try to install SP1 again.
NOTE: At this point I got some wierd error in Windows Update, I googled it and found it to be a timeout error, I disabled the windows firewall and tried again and all went well.
I had the problem that SP1 wasn't offered to me on WU. I just fixed this by changing the display language from German to English, logging on and off, and rechecking WU. SP1 was offered then and now it's being downloaded.
Very strange.
I upgraded to SP1 last night and only ran into 1 problem and it seems many people are having the same issue. After I started using it for about 3 hours, I received a notification that my hardware had changed (which it didn't) and Vista had to be reactivated within 2 days.
So I went through the steps to activate online and it did not work. Then I went through the automated activation by phone, that didn't work either. I was eventually transferred to an actual human. But I have to say after waiting on hold for 10 minutes, they guy that assisted me was helpful and activation went fine.
meetloaf, unfortunately I am going to have to recommend readers here don't follow your solution. In-place upgrades or upgrades over the top of already existing Windows Vista installs aren't always the best thing to do. But I am glad you're up and running! :-)
I am going to continue to suggest that if anyone has any issue with the installation of SP1 to contact Microsoft Support where a experienced Microsoft Support Agent will help troubleshoot your issue:
Using Windows Vista (Pre-installed, Dutch Version, not yet SP1 installed). Happy with it, but also problems with new computer (caused by Vista I think). Problems: Trust 5.1 Surround Speaker Set SP-6250K is not working OK (1 box doesn't work at all), Trust HiRes Webcam WB-3400T is not working properly (audio is OK, however no video or images, with XP the webcam was totally OK), keyboard problems (sometimes with typing an e-mail or using MSN Messenger the keys are changed: suddenly key ? is 0 for example, very strange and not handy!).
Please Microsoft; fix these problems. Good luck with it!
Bye,

Hey Brandon,
Isnt it a bit pointless pointing UK users to the support page, when the UK support team are on a 4 day holiday weekend.
also wasnt it a bit stupid to release this on a week where you knew you would be getting lots of suppport requests and the tech guys would be down the pub?
After upgrading to SP1 I have to reinstall my AOpen CID modem every time I reboot Vista. It worked fine before the upgrade. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
i usually don't post. ever since i switched to vista i've had some real serious issues - vista could't see any printer at all not even its own ms xps or adobe printer. after i installed sp1 it fixed that problem a problem i've been having since the first of february. i too spoke with ms teks but to no avail, they could not figure it out. it wasn't until sp1 came out that fixed that problem. to my suprise it even allowed me to load up an old xerox xe80 workcentre laser printer - and it prints too!!
i've been trying to figure why my sound keeps clipping out after loading the drivers. i think i figure out that problem too and this might be helpful to those who are having similar problems.
first off, make sure you go through and load your card and drivers as prescribed. then go to "control" - then to "hardware and sound" - then to "manage audio devices" - then click on the "playback" tab - then click on which "speakers" you use (i have a speaker system several computer systems back, i guess it's a legacy system) - then click on "properties" button at the right bottom - be sure to go to the "custom" tab - either checkmark "digital output only" off or on (depending what system and speakers you possess). on my system, i had to checkmark "digital output only" off. as soon as i did that my sound automatically clipped on. i guess i have an analog system. i hope this helps someone out there.
right now i have everything working - sound, printer, tablet, my screens are all working as before. now if i can only figure out why netflix viewer won't work. it keeps closing down internet explorer for some reason.

Brandon: I have the VX6000. Works great! Use it to talk to my brother in New Zealand.
When I got SP1 is when I switched to 64bit and spent $150 for 8GB RAM. And I'm apparently using it already! Lots of applications, virtual machines with their own apps, etc., can do that. Still quick too.
But I have the memory of a gnat, and often get locked out of my accounts since i can't remember the passwords.. maybe the camera should be the biometric logon since its working... i wonder if there is software for that somewhere...
Vista SP1: the amazing story of the software that changed Microsoft forever
http://www.itwire.com/content/view/17261/1103/
Vista SP1 has been released at last – and something amazing has happened after a year of Vista problems: Microsoft has released Vista SP1 on time, delivering incredible benefits, eliminated driver issues and delivered software that 'just works', turning the tide on Vista’s bad PR. Even Linus Torvalds and Miguel De Icaza turned out to be secret weapons for Microsoft.
Read on to discover the SP1 world as it should have been, as imagined in a parallel universe by Alex Zaharov-Reutt.
Hi guys-
I posted for some help on here and got an email from Shiv.

Having problems with remote assistance both machines running vista with sp1.......
@ BRANDON:
Hehe, I said this kind of "tongue-in-cheek" but this is the solution I received after seeking for help from the link you provided.
This is was Microsoft had me do :P
I agree, it's long and laborious, but I think it's their attempts to not have to figure out which files are corrupt...just refresh them all.
Update to post mortem #3
After combing over my system. I noted that windows firewall had started up again post SP1 install. This conflicted with the Kaspersky Antivirus firewall. I shut the windows firewall off, and also windows defender, since the AV also covers this area. Viola, my system started to be responsive again. Notably I also had to reinstall (rather run repair)my AV post SP1.
This might be a key item for others to check. Look at the windows security and see if you have tandem applications running. EG. Windows Firewall and your Antivirus firewall. Tandem applications don’t work and play well together… nuff said.
So all problems I expected to be corrected from SP1 seem to be fixed now, with the exception it could not handle the AV I have installed and apparently reintroduced the original MS products. Thus my interactions to correct.
I also went from 1.2> MB/per sec to 48MB+/per sec. when copying files drive to drive, or same drive. This was a fantastic improvement over the old speeds I had pre all of this change.
FYI: my system ran sluggish even prior to installing Kaspersky or SP1, so SP1 did the trick after all.
Good Job guys!!
One more note: Dell Precision 690 owners should review these notes for issues they may have similar to this. Post SP1 really helped my system after all.
Okay, I normally try to avoid these articles but I can't deal with all the f'n crying any longer. You people have no one to blame other than yourselves. You are the dummies that go out looking for updates and always have to be on the frontline of everything. You are the moron, not Microsoft. For years, MS has been having problems with every update they push out not to mention the issues with every o/s they have released but yall still want to play with fire. Sure, Vista runs like a dog but does it do what you need it to do...YES! I only run Vista because it came on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I still continue to run XP on all my other systems as I know it works and have no issues with it. Are you the type of person who after working through all the kinks in your car (or whatever) runs off to sell it and buy another just to deal with more problems? Then why do it with a computer and o/s? I guess I can't ask much from Windows users. If you are going to cry about MS, why don't you use Linux instead? If you had a bad experience with a car, I'm sure you wouldn't go back and get the same car again. Morons.
WOW! Nothing but accolades so far! One of the most successful updates in history guys!
I did a clean install with Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 DVD (System Builder Version) and have performance problems. Out of the blue programs stop responding for about 5 seconds to a minute and then magically recover and continue to work as they should. The machine is a quad core Intel C2D with 4GB RAM and a 8800GTX and 2 Raptor HDD's.
It matters not which programs these are: Explorer, FireFox, WMP or PerfectDisk or even any other app. I can still move the mouse and CPU utilization is about 1%.
I get entries in event viewer log like these:

Quite strange.
Just though I would post that I received an email from "Ram" offering to set up a technical support issue this morning and I declined because I was able to update to SP-1 and all seems to be working well. The update not being available through Windows Update confused me and the list of problematic drivers further confused me. This confusion was my biggest problem. Eventually I was able to successfully update three computers without issue. Still, I do understand that those who depend on a computer for their living might hesitate to update.
MS, please look into whether those who had Symantec products pre-installed or previously installed, actually have them completely and properly uninstalled and are also running some other AV product. I am betting this may be a major issue with any updates. I have two Dell's that came with Norton, which I immediately ran the manual uninstall routine on to make sure it was in fact properly uninstalled. I had learned before that very often the Norton programs, reg keys, etc are still all left behind after running Norton's uninstaller and this caused issues with both the AV products I wanted to test and the general performance of the machine.
My Vista SP1 experience has been prefect on a 5 year old Asus P4 series.
I do think we could make some clearer suggestions on what to do in the scenarios described in which SP1 is known to fail due to driver issues.
For RealTek: Uninstall the drivers, disable in Device Manager, reboot, enter BIOS, disable it in BIOS, reboot, install SP1, get a good sound card, install it.
For Intel, get a decent Video Card (you should have one these days anyway), install, reboot, disable onboard video in the BIOS, install SP1.
For any device that plugs in, uninstall the drivers, unplug, reboot, install SP1, re-install.
Turn off or uninstall temporarily third party AV or AS software when installing SP1. Use MSConfig to make sure it does not start automatically on reboot during install.
Always do a full backup before you make system wide changes to a computer such as installing a Service Pack.
Run a disk cleanup and a disk defrag first.
Uninstall bloatware. Make sure you have enough disk space.
Doing some work ahead of time as described above will make your overall computing experience better and make installing SP1 more achievable.
If any of this is too complicated, have someone who knows computers well help you or hire a professional.
Anyone who wants to expand on this, please do. I know this is not the support forum, but it wouldn't hurt to explain to those who clearly do not understand what to do in those scenarios, what to do!
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for x86 & x64-based Systems (32-bit and 64-bit) Released
http://beqiraj.net/post/2008/03/Windows-Vista-Service-Pack-1.aspx
seeing as how there are so many people posting problems and others coming to the conclusion that sp1 isn't worth it, I should post my success story. The update downloaded flawlessly (even though it seemed to take a bit long for the ~65MB file to download). After installing, there were no noticeable improvements with anything but dx9 games, where there was a huge improvement. Games that I thought I was going to have to dual-boot XP and Vista now work as well as if it was in XP. I am very satisfied with SP1 and I think it is very much worth the download. They finally fixed the games!
WARNING! Vista SP1 destroyed my system.
The download and installation appeared to work, although it took a while. Stage 1 and Stage 2 were installed as the system shut down to restart. Then on restart, Stage 3 completed. But then...the system restarted itself. On that restart, the message "Windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute." That cycle repeated over and over.
I had to do a hard shut down and use system restore to get my system running again...without SP1. It will be a long time before I try it again.

This is not an official fix sanctioned by MS...however, I was able to rectify the issue of SP1 not showing up in WU by doing the following:
(I'm using an HP Pavilion DV6226 notebook - problem was with the Conexant drivers)...
There appear to be two different Conexant drivers (Chdart.sys and Chdart32.sys) in C:\Windows\System32\drivers...
Chdart32 is the one WU updates, but Chdart is the one listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343#method5
I made backups of both files, deleted Chdart.sys from the driver folder, renamed "Chdart32.sys" to "Chdart.sys", and then re-copied the original "Chdart32.sys" back to the driver folder...
Second try with WU and SP1 showed up (it is downloading now and I'm crossing my fingers)...
Again, this is not an officially sanctioned fix - just something I tried and it's worked so far (we will see how the installation goes)...
To clarify the above post a little bit, it appears that WU looks at the Chdart.sys version when determining whether to offer SP1, but Chdart32.sys is actually the driver that gets updated and used...so the driver may be updated and current - WU just doesn't recognize that because it looks at the wrong one - seems pretty simple to me, and I'm a little surprised it was overlooked...
Install Update - Everything went smooth, no crashes, no failed installation...wireless connection is still intact, optical drive works fine, didn't lose sound...
Haven't had a chance to check on any of the "improvements" yet, but so far, so good...
I have decide to completely bypass Vista SP1
FYI to folks - Microsoft Support Engineers may be contacting you via Private Messaging here on our blog to try and help address and troubleshoot some of the issues you may be having. Private Messages from engineers such as Shiv are legit.
wtf i got sp1 2 days ago now im having device issues and my graphics card dont work and i keep seeing an error messenge saying iexplorer.exe is not responding and when i click end program my whole desktop is gone this issue continues each time i log in into windows cmon u guys i was happy when sp1 was was available but now this whole crap is not worth upgrading windows vista has realy missed up this time if your not going to fix windows vista then forget about upgrading it because we the CUSTOMERS paid a whole lot for a newer and better OS but we got fraud instead ill just give your vista another try if that dont work ill go to mac or some other type of OS that aint windows vista or A.K.A windows ME which i had promblems with that too.if not ill just wait for windows 7 because windows vista is done for now.btw where the ultimate extras we promissed for why the hell we pay $399 for something were going to get promissed i think you want more money thats all tell the truth and come up with some solutions...i hope windows 7 does not turn out bad as its older brother windows vista.sorry but my pc dont work out with windows vista.thank you.good bye
I managed to get SP1 to install fially. I re-isntalled vista, not a fresh installation, but an "upgrade" over the existing instllation. This did not remove any programs and settings. I ran the standalone SP1 installer, without downloading any updates from WU.
No driver problems, major issues yet. Things seem a bit more smoother and faster.
The best thing that happened was SP1 bluescreened the Vista machine that my CIO was testing, not once, but multiple times and then the CFO lost three hours of spreadsheets on a bluescreen. (I can't repeat what he said about Office 2007 not doing autosaves like 2003 did.) No Vista for our machines ever. If it hadn't been for this it looked like we were heading for Vista for sure.
If we can't get XP on newer machines because Microsoft wants to curtail its release through OEMs then it looks like we may go to an alternative operating system. MAC OSX works fine on the several hundred systems we have and would be a viable alternative as would Ubuntu which we have already tested.
Here's a helpful link I found prior to trying to update my ThinkPad T60. Turns out my fingerprint reader is on this list. So I'm holding out updating it to sp1. I may have to do the same with the gateway, but I've yet to check it's system specs. (just not enough time in the day)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343#method5
Hopfully IBM can address the driver issue soon.
Day 4 on SP1 with my precision after a couple of days trouble shooting has resulted in a quite a bit better performance. But it's still not much as I would expect out of a high spec system. (see previous posts for Details.)
Thinkpad T60 Vs. Dell Precision 690 performance.
Here's my beef. The precision is on sp1 the thinkpad is not. but even before this, the thinkpad seemed so much more responsive in all degrees. (excluding video performance for obvious reasons.)
I have no application slowness, (not responding) with the thinkpad, but I still encounter application hangs on the precision. The offender is generally office 2007, sometimes the IE and explorer hangs. It's infrequent and there seems to be no common software denominatiors so far.
I'll keep looking at it, but it get's taxing to look at your own system when I have other users to support.
More to come if I can find more points of improvement.
I hope this saves someone alot of time and effort. Yesterday (March 22) I attempted to Install Vista SP1 from Windows Update since it was offered. After downloading and machine reboot (once) Stage 1, I believe, got Blue Screen of Death with NVidia driver error. After multiple blue screens followed by black screens, I rebooted in Safe Mode and Restored my system to Pre-Vista.
My original configuration was:
Dell Inspiron 531
AMD 64 X 2 Dual 5600+ 2.8GHz
Vista Home Premium
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
Driver 7.15.11.6371
9/17/2007
I visited the NVIDIA website and saw that a later driver was available:
ForceWare Release 169 WHQL
Version: 169.25
Release Date: December 20, 2007
Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit
Language: U.S. English
File Size: 31.8 MB
I installed this driver form NVIDIA website and proceeded to install Vista SP1 upgrade.
This time install worked!! With NO REBOOTS. Except with black and white screen (no color).
Happy Ending? Not quite..
I was feeling a bit more secure and ran WIndows Update again and now WU was prompting me to install the OLDER NVIDIA driver dated Sept 2007!!
I thought that was silly so I just rebooted my machine with the new driver and guess what??
I got a FROZEN screen.
Hmm, maybe I should have listened to WU anyway.
After logging in Safe mode I "rolled back" my driver and rebooted and VOILA! My machine works fine....and my Graphics card driver is indeed the older driver with a "microsoft windows hardware compatibility publisher" digital signature.
All is well now and my machine is "up to date"!
Hope this helps someone.
After several tries have now achieved success with installing indows Vista SP1.
(1) Downloaded the full 480MB upgrade file.
(2) Disconnected from the internet.
(3) Disabled all protection on McAfee.
(4) Re partitioned my hard drive so as to make 9GBytes free space in drive C: . I believe the minimum is 7GB. The install had failed when I only had 5GB free.
(5) Ran the SP1 file.
(6) Re enabled McAfee protection etc.
(7) Re connected to Internet.
Strange that the SP1 did not give any complaint either about McAfee protectuon being on or the Drive C: space not being sufficient. To be fair to Microsoft if you search their help files long enough you will find out. However I am amazed atha 5GB free space was not enough. The free space on my Drve C: had been greatly reduced due to the 6GB size of the c:\windows\winsxs folder.
Interesting.
I went into device manager this AM and uninstalled Conexant High Definition Audio under Sound, video and game controllers. Then had it rediscover the device, install it, and then updated the drivers.
Rebooted.
Still not Vista SP1.
Shut down.
A few hours later, I started up again, and on a whim decided to tell Windows Update to look again for updates.
Lo and behold, Vista SP1 is now there.
So, I don't know if what I did made any difference, or if Microsoft changed something, or what.
Now .... to decide whether to update or not ...
I'm thinking it was my uninstall/reinstall of the sound.
I did have Chdart.sys in \windows\system32\drivers\ before (although at a level newer than the problematic version level) and it is no longer there.
Although the driver still exists on my machine at C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\wisr30b7.inf_93bbdee5
Congrats to the MS SP1 team~ Got my update notice Wen night (3/19/2k8) and, started the download. Other than it took nearly an hour to finis everything..it seems to be working perfectly. The one small thing I notice differently was: My browsers(IE7, OPERA and FIREFOX) speed seems to be a tad slower in opening a websites than before. I wonder if anyone has experiences this or, if it's just me.
Congratulations, Windows Vista Team. Unlike a few of these guys and gals who are having problems, Vista SP 1 has been a MAJOR success on both of my machines.
My home desktop is a modified GQ 6310 updated with an Athlon 64x2 dualcore processor, 2 GB of DDR2 800Mhz memory, 300 GB SATA drive, an ATI HD 2600 Pro graphics card, and currently runs Windows Vista Ultimate.
My notebook is a Fujitsu Lifebook A3040 which came with Windows XP Home. The A3040 comes with AMD Turion 64 processor, 1 GB of memory, ATI Mobility Radeon Xpress 200M, 120 GB PATA drive, and a 15.4 in screen. It has been upgraded to Vista Ultimate Edition almost a month after I've got it. Even though this notebook has a memory limitation of 1.5 GB, it has run Vista like a champion. With SP1, all remaining issues are history. Now it runs even faster than when I was running XP Home!
Slow memory copy is a thing of the past. Responsiveness is now better than any of my previous XP Professional Systems. If anything, bootup is a hare quicker and multitasking has gotten a hare easier.
You guys did a darn good job. Knocked it clear out of the park for a Grand Slam. Pass this on to all your guys. Big Pat on the back for all of yall. Thanks for giving us Vista fans something to cheer about and something to shut up all the Vista Haters with all that Hateorade their drinking!!!!
chdart.sys still exists in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\wisr30b7.inf_93bbdee5
though.
I took a full backup Saturday, so I'm going ahead and installing SP1.
2nd installation 100% successful.
The computer upgraded is a Compaq 5012US which I replaced the Motherboard and Processor last year and later added an nVidia Video Card and Creative Sound Card to upgrade performance. The original Motherboard and Processor are now in a generic pc case and used as our LAN media computer. Blogging from it now. I have Windows XP SP3 RC2 on it!)
The upgraded computer did have that Audigy SB Sound Card and the P17.sys driver. I simply removed the sound card and ran the update which took about 45 minutes and everything runs great. Once the installation was done and everything proved okay, I re-installed the sound card and it sounds just fine. We noticed right away that it was starting up/shutting down very noticeably faster and running better. Counter Strike Source is running better than ever on it right now.
Some people see this 8 year old computer running Counter Strike Source on a 19" flat panel (recent bday present) with great quality and think we did some sort of magic. It's not magic, it's know how and a desire to get the best bang for the buck. The upgrades over time proved manageable and were much less than if I bought a new computer, plus I waited for all the components to be on sale.
This was a very fun project to do over time with my son. He learned about computers, saving money and he ended up with a great running computer.
Good job, folks! SP1 Rocks!
Updated successfully yesterday without any problems. I did, however, have to restart after if was finished. Some icons were missing in the system tray. They are now back after the restart. Still not sure if things are faster. I have a HP DV9000Z with Ultimate 64.
OK. Up on Vista Home Premium SP1 now.
Nothing unusual to report at this time. So far, so good.
It looks like the uninstall/reinstall of the sound was the key?
I have an Acer Aspire 5672 computer to which Window Vista Business Express Upgrade was added. I have been trying to put the Vista sp1 on my computer. I check all the drivers before I started the upgrade which updating said I needed. However it never completed the upgrade and now I have a black screen showing this message and it won't go any further. "!! 0xc0190005 !! 24086/77620 (\Registry\machine\Schema\wcm://Microsoft....) The screen is just blinking and will not go any further. What can I do? Thanks
SP1 Bluescreen
I have been running Vista on a IBM T42 for a while now. I wanted to wait till SP1 came out before I installed it on my main machine due to some driver issues and weird glitches I had on the T42 alone. I have been current on the updates and friday I get the notice from windows update that SP1 was available. I let windows update do it's thing. I watched it go through 3 stages of the install. during stage 3 at or around 58% the system blue screened and rebooted. The install for srage 3 began again. Same results. Rebooted and now nothing. I get a Black screen after bios boot. Nothing after. Am I the only one to have experienced this?
Rich
Wow, so many people with so many troubles.
SP1 installed effortlessly on my Vista home premium machine. Took about 30 minutes.
AMD X2, Gigabyte mobo (with Realtek sound), 2gb ram.
Seems solid as a rock since the update.

Two days with SP1 installed and all to be going well except that 'Hibernate' is still sporadic. Well, actually not sporadic but it doesn't work every other time. Anyone have any ideas? I am thinking there is something corrupt in the registry but not sure.
im VERY VERY glad that i still use winxp !!!!!i never understood why people want to use the vista piece of cr*p software ...
i build and repair computers for a living and ON DAILY bases i get poeple in my shop asking me to upgrade theis OS to winxp.
new customers always ask for winxp.
reasons :
no nag screens all the time if its ok.
pc runs 200% faster then as with vista
no driver problems
no software wont install problems ......
and this list goes on and on .......
in other words .... just kick of your vista of your pc and install winxp pro .... problems solved and your pc will run like a dream.....
vista is not better then winxp .. its just only a fancy new coat with a lot of new bells and wishzells that ad nothing new and make your pc slow and come with a lot of nag screens ( do you really want to read this ??? yes / no cancel ) and then do you really really want to read this ... it might blow up your pc ..... etc
its time that mickeysoft engineers understand and respects it's users and stop treathing them as kids ....... ( user ask daddy if its ok to press the ok button )
just my thoughts and such that i would like to vent to some ignorand consumers that are thinking of buying a pc with vista on it .... just dont stick to xp of go linux.

I must say that the move to offer free support to all customers with SP1 is fantastic. Even though I am very vocal against vista this at least shows that MS does not leave it's customers in the cold behind like Apple does.
Kudos.
Biglift,
I looked up 'Biglift computers & repairs' and found nothing on it on Google or Superpages nationwide. Could you please provide contact information? I was curious as to your level of skill and knowledge. As you can see from my posts, I have had no trouble with Vista or Vista SP1 that any person with limited knowledge would not easily either work around or find a simple solution for.
If anything, I would think that a computer repair shop that is dealing with Vista would be profiting by selling hardware upgrades to customers who own older machines, so again, I am confused by your statements.
It honestly sounds to me like your Daddy installed Vista on your computer to stop you from instaling rogue programs, which, BTW, is a great idea that all parents should do.
Again, please provide contact data as we would love to contact you and find out more about your shop.
Installed Vista SP1 on three of my systems, a homebuilt, an Acer micro system, and my Dell Laptop. All installed without any issue whatsoever. Thanks Microsoft !
To date (24th March) I have 36 failed attempts to install SP1. Every single time i get 80073712 erro code. I have tried a combination of going through WU and through the standalone.
Going through WU, the green bar gets to 12% then falls over. In the stand alone installer the green bar gets half way and then gives up. I have not been able to install kb943302 which i notice is in the SP1 list so might be causing me problems. I requested help to try to solve that install problem but the email support was not able to solve the problem so i was told to ring the 0870 UK number. Have not done that though.
One problem of going through the email support is that when you receive a response from the email support and try to reply to the email - you can't as no email address appears in the to box. I managed to get hold of the person who had contacted me by goinmg through the net. Not exactly good customer service.
Hopefully will get a solution that enables SP1 to be installed soon.
One thing i would like to know id that all of the problem reports that my computer has been sending in - are they used and in what way??
Thank you
Richard
SP1 took away support on at least one piece of hardware on a machine I attempted to upgrade... I had been having trouble getting SP1 RC on there, but thought it was just do to an issue being an RC. The RTM release caused a bluescreen during the install, and I decided to just to a clean install with a SP1 slipstreamed disk I got at a recent launch, BUT now my modem doesn't work... No drivers will install, and I know that at leas one of the ones did with Vista before SP1. I came across a page someone that listed that there would be no Vista support for that modem. I can see if it never worked with Vista, but IT DID UNTIL SP1. Now I am stuck overnighting a new one that "should" work with Vista (hopefully SP1 too...). :(
DAY 6 and counting..
VISTA SP1 is still working perfectly and, without any flaw. Let's keep it that way~
It worked fine for me thanks - despite my unsupported setup.
My Toshiba Satellite P10 laptop isn't supported by Toshiba for Vista or nVidia for the graphics, despite it having a good spec otherwise.
I'm running Vista Ultimate with a 'modified .inf' file from the good folks at the above URL, so was a bit worried about SP1.
All went well however with a manual install using the full download CD, and I'm much happier with my system now.
Also did my mom's Thinkpad r61i with the same CD and it sailed through too.
Rgds,
Jim.
Three days, and SP1 is still not installed.
After multiple failed installations, we (myself and Microsoft tech support) are going to have to do a clean reinstallation of Vista, followed by SP1. We've tried everything. Turned off all drivers, manual install from HD, Windows Update, delete Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere, etc... the installation always fails. My favorite is when it reboots and comes up with a NTOSKRNL.exe error.
This has been a tremendous waste of my (and your) time.
IF tonight's clean install works, it will take me another day to reinstall all the software that has been loaded in the last few months.
I'm very close to telling Tech Support to forget about SP1 and just restore the system to a previous backup.

funny.
First thanks to the team for making this possible.
I have a Dell Vostro 1700 w/ Vista ultimate, and a home built test bed computer w/ Vista Business. Prepping to servie my clients with this I did mine first. The Test bed also went ok without a hitch.
I Installed SP1 on the Vostro, Vista Ultimate, it took about 2 1/2 hours to go through it's motnions, start reatart, etc, and then was back in service.
PRE SP1
The Vostro was very problematic pre SP1. It crashed a few times a day, and also when running ACAD in 3D mode I had my autosave set for 3 minutes. When I leave my computer overight, the next morning is always the note: you computer recovered from an serious error" was on my screen. I have belted out a few times the las few months that this was not what I was expecting from Dell/Microsoft. I paid almost 3K for this workhorse. A restart of my computer many times took in excess of 25 minutes. I had to go unprepared a few times to eetings without the data I needed. The meeting would end before my computer would come alive. The MAC pukes in the room made ther snippy comments. The good looking chicks never looked my way.
After SP1:
This computer has been running very trouble free, my mouse software came back alive and I have not had a crash since, and have normal startup and shutdown speeds of about 2-5 minutes. At client sites I have demonstrated awesome start search routines, used a lot of intense software without any glitches. Not only that, but the MAC pukes now are awed, and want to install it on their dual processor machines. An added plus, I now get all the cool chicks!
Thanks, I'm stylin!
All is still well post-SP1 for me here.

Sir,
I read your post and seriously asked myself you you intend to stay in business, being so blind to new techologies. I do a lot of IT for my clients, and yes MAC people too. I hear this sort of coment once in a while, and it always has to do with no RTFM time. Ill try to clarify your customers requests for you if you dont mind:
new customers always ask for winxp. reasons:
Ans
1) These "nag" screens" are turn offable in the control panel.
2) These "nag" screens actually tell a user that he is using poor software designed to directly access the kernel as an administrator. Properly developed software will not require this and is a hint that it could corrupt your OS. That feature does not exist in XP, and yes that why so many have been baked.
AND
1) Interesting, where do you get your data? As you see in my earlier posts, there was a slower restart time on my machines. However that has been remedied. There is still a comparable reboot time with XP, then again, Vista startes many more security polocies and services than XP ever did. It is worth the wait.
ANS
Here, here, no driver problems here. If they are, then it aint on my machine. There are specific constraints to loading drivers on Vista that Vista driver writing have to follow. If the driver aint written right, thenit wont work. If you think they are not open enough, try installing that stuff on MACs.
Again, log in as administrator. I have install ed all kinds of software any problems, from the office wuite to AutoCAD, to lots of diagnostics, video editing and AV configurations and programmign software. Ok, i havent tried any DOS stuff.
Hit me....
My intent here was not to degrade you or pump up Microsoft. I just approach this from a scientific point of view. Get the data and the facts then vent. Your choice of words to descrive Microsoft and their customers "ignorand " , "piece of cr*p software", "wishzells", "mickeysoft" only displays your ignorance and infantile approach to serious IT business.
Seriously, I think you do more damage for your customers than good. If I came to your shop (is it in the garage or basement?) for expert computer services and solid advice, I know by reading this, no matter what I paid you, I would be getting ripped off. No one wants to pay money for a know-it-all, they want to not be obsoleted because your ego-driven opinions get in the way of any knowledge that may be in your attic. You might want to check out some documents and webcasts from technet.microsoft.com , but you probibly know everything on that site already.
Sorry for your customers.. gh
Hi,
I can't get SP1 to show up in my windows update (which is set to all the right settings, i have carefully verified this), despite having updated all my drivers (EVEN though i have none of the problematic drivers listed in Microsoft's article). I most definitely don't already have it, or a prerelease version for that matter. I just don't understand why it's not showing up, and it is frustrating me very much. I went online and did the standalone install, which failed. Any help would be great.
O
The post doesn't say what size the download will be. If it's the full download it's going to clog up the network for days.
Also, I doubt whether it includes any stable drivers for the Nvidia display card or a decent driver for the HP1020 printer: one that doesn't put black rectangles down the right hand side of the page.
Face it guys, Vista is a fiasco and the sooner you get out of DENIAL MODE (traditional for any Microsoft employee who gets told about a problem) and get it to work correctly (i.e. no 8 second wait before the UAC screen pops up, followed by a 10 second wait afterwards) and as soon as you provide a method of allowing users to tell the OS not to show the UAC screen on certain apps, the better.
I was one of the early purchasers of Vista (it came with the HP notebook) and a year later it SUCKS even worse than the day we bought it.
And of course the famous "Clippy" animation from Office 97, Office 2000 and Office 2002 doesn't work. I don't see any fixes for THAT in SP1 either.
I have downloaded SP 1 but it wont install properly. When it has finished the install prosses it says that SP 1 wasnt installed then I have problems with start up i.e. I have a start up repair window come up everytime I try to start my computer. When it does eventually start I get the window saying that SP 1 is installing and not to turn off my computer. I got the download from a standalone site. I just put in my Toshiba recovery disk and reboot. Can anybody help, if so you can email me at andytdn@yahoo.com Thank you Andy
SP1 Problems Solved:
Hi all. I posted earlier about not being able to install SP1 on Vista Ultimate, even though I was running the English version of the OS. I had a look at the installed languages and found that the makers of my laptop (Asus), bless them (NOT!), had decided that since I live in the Australasia "region", that pre-installing 3 versions of Chinese and one of Japanese would be a good thing. Although I had to uninstall the language packs one at a time (with a restart and much farting about by Vista in between: honestly, you'd have thought I was reinstalling the OS each time!), once I was down to just English, SP1 installed without any probs.
Hopefully that may help someone else.
>>Tablet PC mouse cursors are gone. The useful

>>Pen flicks no longer work.
It's not a SP1 problem. Restart "TabletPC input" service.
This problem exists in any Vista, even without SP1 installed. It's hard to tell when exactly it disappears. I thing it caused by compinaction of "sleep", crappy Intel's GMA drivers and anything else.
Donn,
You're HP1020 printer is an office/small business printer released with specific drivers for use in an office for Windows 2000, ie, it's quite old. HP and many other hardware vendors refuse to update the drivers for older equipment as it forces you eventually to buy new equipment. Again, HP could make these printers work perfectly on Vista but they won't so don't hold your breath. From HP "PC: 2000 or XP, 90 MHz Pentium, 120 MB free hard disk space (10 MB minimum install), CD-ROM drive, USB port (compatible with USB 2.0 specifications)"
As far as nVidia (and ATI, BTW) drivers, the WHQL versions are available on Microsoft Update.
You can disable UAC (if you have administrator rights). Click Start, type MSCONFIG in the search bar, run MSCONFIG, click on the last tab and you can disable it. In a office scenario there are other options for this that can be taken by IT. I however suggest you leave it on and only install software that does not need admin privileges to run (which puts your computer at risk).
Folks, if you don't want to follow the links and read the information carefully laid out by MS on Vista SP1, hardware, and security, you may want to hold off on publicly embarrassing yourselves here. To prove my point, please walk into a Ford Service area and ask them for a part you need for your Chevy. See what the response is. Call your insurance company and tell them your car won't run after you broke it installing a part and file a claim. See what they say. If you think you know what you are doing but are having the issues I see described in this blog, I respectfully suggest that you probably do not. Hire someone who does.
Hi Nick,
What are the real improvements of SP1? I honestly cannot see where you've improved on Vista, and after defending it since it was released, not because I love Microsoft -- but because I've had little to no problems. However, SP1 does nothing much, and those that were waiting for it to be released have wasted their time in my opinion.
Regards Jason
i fixed the eplorer.exe the promblem was is windows vista sp1 was blocking some sort of windows file. thanks for this microsoft you missed up big time with your cheap a** windows vista y u do this to us why. cant we get along and re disign windows vista again and i hope windows 7 is going to be free to windows vista users. why because you scammed us with windows vista promblems why why why why why.and what about the vista capable lawsuit we need our money back for that issue too because you lied to us that too.
Just wanted to say thanks to JK_STL.
I followed your workaround for SP1 not showing up in WU on my HP dv6000 series and it worked perfectly. After restarting, it appeared first time. Installation went fine and all seems to be working properly.
The SP1 update finally worked. Unfortunately, it had to be done from a clean install of Vista Business.
I appreciate the work your Support Team did, but only wish that the whole effort would have been unnecessary...
Now I have to reinstall all the stuff that was installed...
Microsoft lists the "P17.sys" driver as being a problem only when used with the Creative Audigy sound card. This is incorrect as that driver is used for a number of different Creative sound cards (including a soundblaster live 24bit) and SP1 doesn't show up at Microsoft update for any of the cards using that driver.
The list needs to updated to include ALL Creative sound card drivers that use the "P17.sys" driver.
and even though Microsoft states that they've been working with the hardware manufactures to release updated driver ....not a peep out of Creative about anything (including posts on thier forum).
:(
First, the issue with the drivers is not that they do not work with SP1. The issue is they may interfere in some scenarios with the installation process of Vista SP1.
If you read my previous post you will see that I was easily able to work around this by physically removing the Audigy Card during the installation process. Once the installation process was done, I just put it back and it runs fine.
Now, and just for the record, Creative does have very specific information on their support website about their support for old sound cards and Windows Vista which can be found here:
http://us.creative.com/support/vista/welcome.asp
Once you review the links, and read, you will find that certain sound cards have reached their end of life cycle and will not be further supported (like having Vista Drivers) by Creative.
"The majority of Creative products have or will have Windows Vista support. However Creative, in line with all hardware manufacturers, must balance its Windows Vista support for newer and older products while allowing for research and development into new technologies and products. This generally means that products introduced more than three years ago will not have additional driver updates within our software development plan."
BTW, you need to disable your onboard sound in the BIOS before loading a sound card (which I find almost no one knows and is the real problem), in the future please refer to the online manuals and shipped instructions.
Alrighty, then.
Oops:
NOT good language: by physically removing the Audigy Card during the installation process (that would not be right - make sure power is off before opening cover)
Correction: by physically removing the Audigy Card before running the installation process
Alrighty again!
My system is not detecting Broadcom 802.11 wireless adapter in my HP TX1000 series laptop. I am running windows vista and it was working great till I installed SP1. It's no where and It's not even listed as Unknown Device. I tried HP recovery manager to reinstall hardware drivers but it didn't help. I tried to add it using Add new hardware wizard but I didn't see the device in list. I did try to use the HP wireless assistant and used the wireless lid in the laptop. It turn ON the bluetooth but not the wireless adapter. I can't even see wireless adapter in the HP wireless assistant, I only see Bluetooth module in there. Does anyone know how to fix this issue and from where I can download latest device driver for the networking adapter that comes preinstalled with HP TX1000 series laptops. Any help??
Thanks in advance.
Sagar
Hi Sagar, you might want to contact HP support as they are better equipped to answer questions related to specific models they have.
However - I do have something you can try. On some laptops there is a tiny button or switch on the left or right side that can turn off wireless capabilities. If your laptop has a wireless button or switch, make sure its turned to the "on" mode otherwise Windows Vista may not pick it up until you switch it on.
Hello Brandon
It was the same case with me after i upgraded my vista premium to sp1 and nobody turns of the wireless switch b4 doing it.Moreever the system event notification service fail to start, due to which the dependency services dont work and the wireless stops working. i have to manually uninstall the sp1 update which took a long time and after that every thing was fine. Vista Sp1 is causing a problem with wireless users. Even manually turning on the services in the admin does not work, since it does turn on and its status is set to starting.I havent tried the changong regsitry values, since in this case registry overriding wont help. If anyone has a solution to this, plz share it
Harsha
Harsha, I'm not sure turning off the wireless switch on laptops is the source of your problem. I've installed SP1 on two different laptops with wireless switches and I've never had to turn them off. SP1 installed for me just fine. However I am forwarding your comments on to folks here at Microsoft to look at the issue more closely and do much more investigating than I could.
Nick,
Before Vista SP1, I have been a major fan since Vista's release. I have it running on a 64 bit dual core HP workstation and bought new software such as Office 2007 and didn't expect perfect backward compatibility. Here's the rub. Vista SP1 released, and I can't even get it to install. I have installed every update. I keep getting "internal error 80070002". I have followed the instructions. Still no install. I have downloaded the standalone, still get 80070002 after erasing the files in datastore. I just waited an hour on the chat line only to get the hyperlink from Microsoft personnel for the 32 bit installer when I provided all the 64 bit information. Additionally, the dunderhead, Mathan tells me to activate the Windows Modules Installer in Services after I am in "Safe Mode with Network". Well, my session was suspended and I rebooted in the Safe Mode with networking only to find out that one cannot invoke the installer module within safe mode. Since I had the 64 bit standalone version, when I received the error about the 32 bit installer suggested by Mathan, I proceeded to install the 64 bit version only to get the same damn "internal error 80070002".
I am beginning to move to the camp that perhaps Vista does suck when you can't even install a service pack nor can you even get intelligent help from Microsoft personnel. Thanks Microsoft. I was one of your most loyal defenders since Windows 1.0, but I am beginning to think that Linux may be the way to go.
John,
I have a very educated guess at what is wrong that is likely true and will leave you much more upset with HP, then, than you are, now, with MS. Your shiny new HP Workstation shipped with an OEM version of Vista and dedicated firmware. As such, your avenue of support in this instance would be HP, not MS, as they are they ones who messed with it. In my experience they will develop an executible or two in a year or two to say they fixed what they broke.
Although, a retail version installation on a new HD will in all likehood fix it now (no, you cannot use someone else's HD with Vista on it, technically).
Now, for all the rest, HP is not the only OEM that could do this. Just look for them above.
Moral: make sure your machine uses industry standard hardware, firmware, and full versions of Windows. Most those mon'k'eys cut corners (and "embellish"), but you only had $299 anyway, right?
Now, how many of you have a system bit to set in BIOS when installing an OS, or disk protection in BIOS on, and/or a disk recovery partition (that is actually your boot disk), or not enough hard drive space?
Know why you didn't read all of this info on the so called technical writers blog who pointed you here? 'Cause they know jack and are paid to write jack.
Good Luck!
IRead,
Alrighty then???
Well, "firstly", if I misread the tone of your reply, then sorry, excuse the tone of mine.
Let's be 'accurate' shall we...:
I don't need to read your previous post since I'm well aware that one can successfully install SP1 by manually downloading and running the installer ...this is well known since Microsoft has already stated so.
Nowhere in my post did I mention having a problem updating to SP1 (or specifically using the standalone installer), I referenced the inability to see/install SP1 via Microsoft Update for users with the problem drivers (as mentioned in the MS article).
Btw, uninstalling the sound card before, and reinstalling it after is not new, it's a well known option for upgrading to SP1...so is leaving the card in place and simply reinstalling the drivers after upgrading to SP1.
"Secondly":
I was already quite familiar with the Creative website, and the links you posted, as well as whether or not my card is supported by Creative, and if they offer Vista approved drivers for it. I would think it would be obvious that if I have a card running under Vista, and have not mentioned having any problem with it running under Vista, that I am not having any problems in that regard.
The only problem alluded to in my post relates to the lack of availability of "updated" drivers (as mentioned by Microsoft) that would allow for the installation of SP1 via Microsoft Update.
I have no idea why you're referencing end of lifed cards.
My card, the internal SoundBlaster Live 24bit specifically, is listed as supported ...FYI (and using your terminology) , "...once you review my initial post, and read,..." you will notice that the only 2 cards I 'specifically mentioned by name" (the Sound Blaster Live24bit & the Audigy) are supported by Creative under Vista.
The BIOS tip... well, I hope to not even go down that road (though I'm not holding my breath). Hopefully an updated driver will be made available.
Thanks for the tip though, it makes sense, but I hadn't even thought of that.
Your next comment:
"...in the future please refer to the online manuals and shipped instructions."
Huh??? ...where in any of my posts have I asked you any questions (any at all), or raised any issue that having/reading/using a manual could (by any stretch of the imagination) address?
Frankly, what makes you think you're more versed on this topic than I am?
To quote you again ..."alrighty then"!
;)
Hi There
I am about to work on a brand new Desktop PC tomorrow for one of my clients. Should I install SP1 before I connect the computer to the internet. Will this install all the updates prior to the release of SP1
First, WU did not allow me to install SP1. I did have a driver issue with Creative Audigy 2 ZS.
- I downloaded the latest drivers for Audigy 2 ZS.
- WU did not allow me to install SP1.
- Read a message board where someone had the same issue. So they downloaded and installed SP1 using the standalone installer.
Decided to try the same.
- Installation took about 50mins.
- After last reboot, got the "all is clear" single and SP1 was installed successfully. Windows Live Messenger was "re-installed" automatically by Windows and all is well with the world!
- One additional note: The Windows Search function broke about 7 months ago. No reason why, all reported "fixes" did not work. Never could get the service to restart, as it "was not found." After the update to SP1, my Windows Search is working again, and I'm currently indexing.
-Copying files, creating folders, etc is fast again, which resolves my largest complaint about Vista.
Thanks, just wanted to share the good news, and post so that if anyone else had my same experiences and were pondering to install SP1, they will have a point of reference.
Vista SP1 has now failed to install for the 43rd time and for some reason KB943302 reappears occasionally on WU (had opened a support ticket to resolve the issue but support could not fix it)
Got in touch with the person who gave me help to solve the above kb problem and I was told to go through steps that I have already tried myself! Very annoying! One improvement that could be made to the problem is asking what has the person tried to resolve the issues themselves as some people may not be good with technology and others may be really good with technology.
justme, you wrote:
"The list needs to updated to include ALL Creative sound card drivers that use the "P17.sys" driver"
and
"not a peep out of Creative about anything (including posts on thier forum)."
Again, regardless of the card, removing it will certainly remove any certainty as to whether or not it was the sound card/drivers blocking the update and their is clear data on the Creative site as to which cards have Vista Drivers. For example, I use the X-Fi Gamer Card and do not have a P17.sys file on my system (but do on my son's computer).
One could easily extract the files in the downloadable driver installation packages and see if P17.sys is in it?
Did not mean to upset you. My comments were meant to help all understand the issues and relate my own experience with the issues.
BTW, the reason I noted the life cycle and availability of drivers for certain sound cards by Creative is simple. If Creative did not release Vista drivers by Feb., 2007, what would make anyone think they would for SP1 in March of 2008? Of course, a year has passed now , so a whole years worth of product is now officially not supported by Creative.
In order for MS for provide updated drivers for products, the device manufacturer would have to provide them. Again, MS does not write drivers for other manufacturers devices.
They will test them and if they pass they will be WHQL listed and be available through Windows Update, a well known and well documented procedure. If they are not available on WU, then either Creative did not provide them for testing or they did not pass the test.
Also, you wrote:
"The BIOS tip... well, I hope to not even go down that road"
One needs to have just one Audio device installed and running. Having two running is not required and will cause issues. Having hardware and/or drivers in conflict will certainly reduce your computing experience and can lead to system instability.
I have no idea what your knowledge is, but I do know mine.
Alrighty then, again.
I now have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330) in my Windows Update, 26 March 08. In fact WU is showing nothing else but that update. I know there was an Nivida driver update I had not downloaded. I had not downloaded it because I have the latest Nivida Driver and could not find a driver on Nvida’s site which matched the one MS wanted me to download!
Yest now a couple of weeks before its supposed to be there it appears, what is going on?
Wow! this sure has gotten off topic!
Funny that your 'name' is "IRead" ....Nothing you quoted me saying contradicts the facts:
I never said ALL Creative drivers ...I said "ALL Creative sound card drivers THAT USE THE "P17.sys" DRIVER"! ...your son's card doesn't use that driver (reinforcing my point) whereas yours does ...further reinforcing my point!
"iRead" ...please READ!!!!
I said "not a peep out of Creative about anything (including posts on their forum" ....nowhere in my posts am I experiencing ANY interest or concern with past Creative drivers for Windows Vista! ...this entire post is SPECIFICALLY about drivers released to address install issues with "SP1" ...again, not a peep out of Creative"!!
Again, I never mentioned anything about outdated products (I don't have any), you did.
I never mentioned anything about MS's ability/inability or responsibility/lack of responsibility to developed new drivers for outdated products. Again, I never mentioned anything about outdated products.
I'm well aware of the entire WHQL process, but since you felt the need to go off on that tangent ...thanks?!?
Re the BIOS tip ...and your insistence of 'explaining the patently obvious (when no clarification/explanation was requested) trivia' ....I never said I didn't fully understand what you stated ..I said I hadn't thought of it (again, as I said, it's not an avenue I have given any thought to pursuing at this point).
Finally, it really isn't any of your concern what my "knowledge is", your interest in/understanding of my knowledge is not something I'm concerned with. I'm also not in the least bit concerned with what your "knowledge is".
In a number of your posts you do give the impression that you think you know more than the poster, and are going to 'set them straight' ...even when (outside of your own mind) it isn't evident that you're in any position to do so, or that any input/questions where specifically asked of you in the first place.
Yawnn....
For the record, I won't be responding to anymore posts by you ...I'm not interested.
Why am I so sure that you'll reply anyway?
"alrighty then, again"
Sooo juvenile (but not unexpected).
All the best to you anyway.
:)
Everything went mostly okay for me. Had to physically remove the creative card before it would work as well as retire a printer. This is definately not a service pack I can recommend to anyone without at least "some" computer experience to be able to solve problems. In fact I'd say that quite a number of my family memebers are going to need some serious help getting this service pack installed. That's not a good sign IMHO.
Also, for what it's worth, iRead, your tone is coming across as a bit of an annoying "know it all". I have the same issues as Just Me, and if you search the creative forums you'll see hundreds of people having the same problems as well. You seem to think ripping out sound cards is just a trivial procedure. It's not. It's a scarey, nasty proposition facing a number of non-computer literate people in addition to all the other potential issues. I for one had to spend HOURS researching things online before I was able to get the patch to work and even then Vista STILL performs a bit slow for my tastes, but at least I'm current. Not sure what I gained from updating other than a massive headache.
Urgent-Urgent-Urgent - Re: Vista SP1
Hold on Microsoft!
Let me get this - If I use Windows Update - The SP1 download might not show?
That's nuts!
It should show with the *REASON* why it cannot install (leave it greyed out).
Your group needs to create a tool, just like the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to address this for the end-user.
I have a Dell XPS system and the SP1 does not show under Windows Update. I called Dell and their Technical Support people told me to download the Standalone SP1 Installer.
However, in the KB Document, it says *NOT* to use it for a single computer! Yaaahhh!!!
So what is your strategy?
Like I said above, you need a Tool to isolate and obtain or point to the proper resources to correct the problems and seamlessly install SP1.
I have clients that wish to go back to Windows XP SP2 because of this.
Microsoft is an innovative company, but the cat was let out of the bag, too early on this one!
Like the NIKE Commercial - Just Do It!
Major Problem -
What about the SigmaTel Driver mess?
Just found out that SP1 won't show because the SigmaTel Drivers are not compatible with Vista SP1.
I have a Dell XPS 410 and Dell does NOT have a solution - totally unacceptable.
SigmaTel was bought out by Integrated Device Technology (see this link:)
http://www.sigmatel.com/support/
IDT does not even list SigmaTel on their website. However their main telephone is:
408-284-8200
Perhaps a member of your Vista Team can investigate this since the Sound Device is in widespread use. Kindly respond here.
Thank you.
P.S. IF you knew certain drivers would be a problem, SP1 should have not been released until they were resolved. Many (not just a few) computers USE SigmaTel audio!!
When one tries to help others and point them to clear documentation of known issues and even offers clear resolutions all in helpful manner to many, yet is called names in a forum by a few, he will not worry about that.
The driver issues are the responsibilty of the device manufacturers, not MS. Period.
Their is no reason for MS to wait to update it's software because some devices are not being supported properly. If that were true we would be on DOS 6.0 still now.
Shame on the device makers, shame on the OEM's.
I've got to agree with Compumind's comments, welcome back to the bad old days of confusing updates! I'm a Microsoft partner and I'm getting confused so I can imagine what the average consumer is thinking.
I installed the Beta, provided feedback and was generally pleased with the results. On Monday I uninstalled the Beta and downloaded the self-installer to my server but also wanted to try the "Automatic Update" route. I updated.
And Updated again.
And again,
And ...
Do I have SP1? I don't know, the system just keeps telling me that I have new updates available. It feels like the death of a thousand cuts with no end in site. In the past service packs were cumulative updates and you could skip all of the incremental updates. This is Ground Hog Day, "You need updates!, You must restart!, You need updates!" repeat.
Regarding the comments by iRead:
Please look at this Microsoft KB article -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343/en-us
"Cause 5
A hardware device driver or device software was problematic when you updated to Windows Vista SP1.
The Windows Update service can detect the small set of device drivers and software that falls into this category. The Windows Update service will not offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device driver or the device software has been installed."
Well, in my opinion, the NUMBER of devices listed is small, but their impact is HUGE!
MS needs to work with these OEMS, Vendors, etc. to insure that they will work in SP1.
I would like to think that DELL, HP, etc. would have the resources to take care of their own products (not!) but what about the non-oem's - they need to be supported as well.
So, it's a classic case of the dog chasing it's own tail. Microsoft really needs to push them.
I have just got to 52 failed attempts to install SP1. In two of those attempts WU told me that 'some updates are not required on your computer'.
Getting extremely annoyedas got some supprt from MS and all that happened was given a 'program' that stops and clears WU, did not help though as i still get 80073712 error which 'Checksur' is supposed to fix but I can't install it on my computer as it tells me i don't need it.
Come on MS what are you doing to provide a solution for those that can't install the service pack that you have provided?
Just looked at my 'problem reports' and have seen that 'Windows Modules Installer' has had 192 crashes/failures between 13th February 2008 to 26/03/2008 7.15pm.
Hope that might help to find a solution.
My sympathies to those who deal with this all the time, my heartfelt sympathies.
for those of you using Conexant High Definition Audio & have downloaded the update from Windows Update, then I suggest you check out the URL for a solution if you don't see SP1 listed in Windows Update and you use Conexant. it's the last blog by steve (last time i checked) about the Conexant system files.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-can-you-really-expect-from-windows-vista-service-pack-1/
also, I just installed SP1 and if I am not doing anything and the computer is just sitting there, after about 20secs it locks the computer. It's really annoying because I have to log in *again*.
Anyone know of a solution or have the same problem? Thanks
Compumind, as Nick states in the above post:
"We're working with the providers of the remaining devices to get updated versions of the drivers to our customers as well."
So yes - we're working with hardware manufacturers to get the updated drivers to the folks unable to install SP1.
Also: what KB states not to install SP1 via the standalone installer on a single PC?
richingram, you should probably contact Microsoft Support again to let them know their original solution did not work - especially after "52 failed attempts". We're not technical support here so there isn't much we can do other than direct you to the more experienced support folks:
Bluehills, could you elaborate? What exactly showed up "weeks before"? SP1 has been available on Windows Update for over a week now so if you're seeing it, its not showing up early.
Cassie, right-click on your desktop and click "Personalize" and then choose Screen Saver.
If the "On resume, display logon screen" is checked then it will "lock" your PC and you will have to login to start using it again.
@Brandon
Thanks for replying, but that doesn't solve my problem. Currently my screensaver is set to none and the wait box + check box are greyed out.
My current problem isn't with my screensaver or my power options (I checked). As stated above, when I am inactive for a certain time period of 20 seconds I am reverted back to the logon screen and my account is -Locked- for no good reason. Before SP1 installed I had no problems when I was inactive for 20 secs or more.
Cassie, I suggest you contact Microsoft Support:
Be sure to choose "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (All Languages)" and explain the issue occured as a result of installing SP1. The support engineers are better experienced to help troubleshoot and see what's going on with your system and why its doing what its doing.
Hi Brandon -
Regarding your comment -
This KB Document clearly states the following:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330):
DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER.
In hindsight, everything is 20/20.
However, the driver issues, i.e. SigmaTel and others in the KB:
Should have been addressed PRIOR to release of SP1 - It would have taken more work, but you would not have these problems from the get go.
Nothing personal <smile>.
Compumind,
I am reading through KB936330 and not seeing it say do not install via the standalone installer if you are updating a single PC.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936330/en-us
Which KB are you referring to as "this KB Document"?
Also: this KB article lists off the 3 methods in which a user can get Windows Vista SP1 as of today:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791/
The standalone is one of those 3 methods in which we recommend users proceed with installing SP1.
If you could point out exactly where we are recommending users updating a single PC not use the standalone installer - that would be very helpful as I can investigate.
In context what we really find is:
"Read the overview of Windows Vista SP1, including what's new, technical details, guidelines and notable changes.
Read the Deployment Guide for Windows Vista SP1. This guide includes technical information, procedures, and recommendations for installing Windows Vista SP1 in a business or corporate environment.
DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is available on Windows Update.
To download the Standalone version of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 please follow the directions below in the Instructions section."
I wonder why they noted to read those items and to follow instructions? What an odd thing to suggest!
iRead, where did you find that text? Where are you quoting it from?
Thank you for the response. I totally appreciate you are not the technical support. Just thought it might help to find a solution quicker as the technical support is taking me through steps i have already tried and support and the UK phone support could not fix KB943302 (which is part of SP1 update.)
Richard, no worries at all! I am taking all feedback and forwarding it on to the SP1 folks.
Now, just so I understand - you're still having issues getting SP1 installed correct?
Brandon:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B0C7136D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en
is lnked to from KB article
and here:
http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?srch=105&FORM=IE7RE&q=B0C7136D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674
I am still having issues. Failed 3 times on 27th March at 7.30pm. Consistently gets to 12% then falls over. The error messages that come up are 'WindowsWCPStoreCorruption' and 'CbsPackageServiceFailure' I would presume if MS saw lots of these errors coming from computers then it would give an idea of where the problem lies. I am not that technically minded so maybe wrong!
I did get a pm through the site from one of the SP1 development team but have not heard anything back yet.
Sorry did not say the product is 'Windows Module Installer' and the problems are as my previous post.
Probably would not hurt to run ChechSur:
"What is CheckSUR?
System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system. These inconsistencies may be caused by various hardware failures or by software issues. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows Servicing Store, and they can cause a Windows Vista update to fail. When the update fails, it blocks the user from installing updates and service packs. CheckSUR addresses this issue."
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
Read the instructions very carefully, follow them. If any part of this is not 100% understood seek help from a profesional.
If you have a corrupt registry and this tool does not help, you may have no other option but a complete re-install which I think would take less time than trying to force an update 50 times.
I installed 64bit SP1 on two machines. Both times through Windows Update, so I assume I met the criteria. Anyhow, one machine works fine, while the other got hung up in Audiodg.exe consuming 50% CPU and thrashing the disk. Investigation shows this is an *old* problem which was around when Vista first came out, and, since I never had it before, I associate with SP1. Yes, the audio is on-board Realtek AC97, and yes, I keep it up to date, driver-wise. Anyhow, using system restore to rollback SP1 fixed the problem. Curious...
UPDATE TO PREVIOUS POST OF 3/26/2008 - Urgent!
Hi Brandon:
Actually, this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&displaylang=en
Leads to the KB page mentioned above.
Look under the Overview section, where it clearly states:
Just like iRead mentions above.
However, the DRIVER issues are really the key - the link above just confuses things even more.
Kindly advise. Thank you. :0)
If you cannot Download AND Install Vista SP1 then the above information has no meaning.
I don't know how seriously the people in Redmond are really taking this.
Compumind, I can assure you we are taking this very seriously and I am forwarding your comments (and others) about the confusing language used on the standalone installer download link to the folks who can look at changing it and making it more clear.
I should have said:
If you cannot Download (sucessfully) AND Install (successfully) Vista SP1 then the above information has NO meaning.
And, believe it or not, I DO like Microsoft.
This is a brief description of my service pack 1 experience. I have a Dell laptop about a year old with vista home premium pre-installed. Vista has been trouble free for me the past year.
I spent some time on the Dell forums and realized I had an outdated Sigmatel driver which was preventing me from seeing SP1. I managed to update the driver and saw SP1 available in windows update. I downloaded the package and started the installation. The first attempt failed at about 98% of stage one. I tried a second attempt. This time I disabled my security software and everything else I thought could possibly interfere with the installation. This time the install got to 100% of stage 3, stayed there for quite some time, than started to revert changes. this process took several hours.
I decided to try a third time a few days later. Again, I disabled security, shut down my wireless connection and made sure all unnecessary software was shut down. Stage 1 and 2 went rather quickly, about 30 minutes. Stage 3 got to 100% after a total time of about an hour. Then I got the "reverting changes" screen. A couple of hours later a login screen appeared and I logged in. I then got a screen telling me my copy of windows was illegal and I needed to enter a product key. I cancelled out of this screen and reverting changes appeared again. This "reverting changes" process went on for about 8 hours total when I finally decided to do a hard shutdown, thinking it was locked in a loop. I finally had to use my windows recovery disk and managed to do a sucessful system restore to an earlier time. This appeared to work ok and my computer finally was back to normal.
In summary, I made 3 attempts to install the service pack and all 3 failed. I suppose that I have some sort of software installed that interferes with the service pack installation, although I have run out of ideas as to what it could be. I have spent countless hours over the past week on this issue. This has been a very bad experience for me and I am frustrated. I don't believe I will try to install the service pack again. I have never had so many problems with trying to install a service pack. I have upgraded windows in years past, installed service packs, and never had a problem such as this, that I couldn't figure out in a relatively short period of time. All in all, Vista SP1 has been a horror story for me.
I should have really said:
If you cannot Download (Successfully) AND Install (Successfully) Vista SP1 AND Run the Vista OS (Successfully) on different systems, then the above information has NO meaning.
It is my hope you will reference all my above comments, as I am only attempting to help prevent "Another Titanic."
Best of luck to the team.
I will not comment in this blog again.
However, I will read all comments, as actions speak louder than words.
Good luck.
Compumind, your comments are much appreciated. Don't be a stranger - I'd love to hear from you again ;-) I'd rather you continue to make comments.
Again, I am doing my best to direct folks comments, thoughts, suggestions, etc to the right people here at Microsoft.
iRead
Have tried to install Checksur 3 times but each time I get the message that the update is not needed on my computer.
Other updates get installed on the computer without any problems.
Am extremely reluctant to reinstall Vista as (I presume) means reinstalling other software that I have on computer and the computer is only 8 months old so should not be having issues.
Thank you for your kind re-invite back!!
As a Microsoft VAR/Systems Integrator and Partner, I appreciate being able to fully participate in resolving the many-faceted SP1 problems which are holding back the growth of Vista.
Should you also need to PM me, kindly do so.
Perhaps Mr. Nick White should have been a bit more conservative regarding the immediate success of SP1.
P.S. Now let's resolve this bloody thing!
:0)
"How can I manually install and run CheckSUR to troubleshoot my system?
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To manually install and run CheckSUR, follow these steps:
1. Click Start , click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
2. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
3. Type reg add HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreCorruptTimeStamp /t REG_SZ /d "0" /f, and then press ENTER.
4. Type reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CheckSUR\, and then press ENTER.
5. Download and then install CheckSUR from the Microsoft Download Center. (See the "Update information on the Microsoft Download Center" section.)
6. As soon as the file has been successfully downloaded, double-click the file to install and run CheckSUR."
Richingram,
Are you positive that the above steps were taken?
Ive just started to view this. I have Vista on my home system. SP1 makes me nervous because it is our only home system.
Is any one aware of a per-brand-name and/or per-model summary of SP1 issues? Such a summary might make me a bit less nervous...
My specific system is an Acer desktop, but information about other brands might be useful to others.
Thank you for this site... and to MS for providing support that I hope I will not need.
BHS,
The people who would know that would be Acer. I suggest you look for that information on their website or call their technical support line. The same goes for Dell, Sony, HP, Gateway, etc., etc.
These companies typically only provide an OEM version of Windows on the computers they sell with Windows pre-installed. That means two important things:
1. They are responsible for support to you for Windows (they get a deep discount in exchange).
2. They own the software, not you - it is only licensed for that computer. This license agreement is shown to the consumer the first time they run the computer.
I prefer to own a full retail version because I get my support from MS then. I also buy the full retail version with a computer and a blank HD and install it myself. Well worth not having bloatware and an OEM version in my opinion.
Microsft is however offering free support for Vista SP1 issues, so give them a shout! But, don't expect them to walk you through the install process. The support is for people who cannot install the Service Pack or people who have installed SP1 but are having related issues. Did you say you had tried the install already?
BHS, don't listen to iRead. He's incorrect.
Bradon previously stated:
"We are offering free-of-charge support to *anyone* who is having issues installing Windows Vista SP1 - even folks like pat who may be using a OEM copy of Windows Vista that came with their HP laptop."
markus55,
Not sure how you have ascertained that my last comment was wrong, could you perhaps re-read the entire comment again?
Hi Folks, thanks for the informative site.
No go on Vista SP1. Went thru all three stages of install then after 100% of stage 3 I got error msg "update did not install, reverting back etc......." No specific error info, just "did not install"...(after an hour of downloading & installing). I'm just a 25 year "novice user", but I've never encountered update problems like this before.
Any suggestions?...wait a month or two until the bugs are worked out before retrying?
TIA
After 1 day wasted reloading Office, pcAnywhere, Firefox, Citrix, etc. the system stops working. OK, he thought, reboot and continue...
No. Now I get a black screen, just a cursor, nothing else. No keys work. Same result in Safe mode.
I've tried multiple restores, progressivly further back in time, nothing.
I cannot access the DVD backup I made after SP1 to do Complete PC Restore, so it's back to another clean reinstallation.
I cannot begin to convey how frustrating the whole process has been. I've worked with computers for over 30 years, and this Vista SP1 installation has been indescribably frustrating.
This will be my last install of Vista. If it doesn't work, I'll go back to XP Pro...
Interesting blog to monitor. I'm left wondering how many SP1 installs have occured to this point and just how large a base of problematic installs exists.
Having had virtually no problems with the install myself -- I've always kept my hardware "mainstream simple"-- and after several days of trouble-free operation, I'd like to offer my thanks to the Vista team for a solid update, and applaud their decision to keep working this blog through their service/support in an attempt to clear up the few remaining compatability issues that exist.
SP1 install went fairly smoothly however it has now broken the internal microphone on my HP DV7000 laptop, which OK until the bugswitch/upgrade.
All in all I am VERY disappointed with VISTA and would love to return to XP. My main problems are that even with 4GB RAM the performance is terrible, the defragger has no progress indicator, general software incompatibility, and I find the OS incredibly difficult to use. If you have any hardware or network problems and a driver update doesn't fix it, then you are really screwed! :(
Hello Brandon and Nick:
In my opinion, a regular SP1 Status Update in this blog would be a great idea to see exactly what progress is being made in getting SP1 to download and work seamlesly.
Nick's intro at the start of this blog is just fine, but to note actual increments of progress would be far better.
I cannot and will not roll SP1 out to my client's systems in this current state. A good example of this is the SigmaTel Driver mess.
Kindly advise and thank you.
I know about the SigmaTel driver mess, since my 5 computers all have SigmaTel Audio!
Windows Update will not even prompt me to download SP1 and when I forced the SP1 Update via the Standalone Installer, my system crashed.
Glad I set the restore point before I did it.
BTW, these problems are on my Dell XPS 410's.
I want to say that SP1 went smoothly. I just purchased a low end system that had Vista Home Premium pre-installed. Ran WU to get current and then SP1 was offered. Intallation went without a hitch and everything was up and working within an hour. I then gave this machine to my wife in place of her XP system and she transitioned without missing a beat, paying bills, checking her email, playing music.
I heard all the horror stories about networking issues, BSOD etc. but absolutely no trouble at all for me.
We have three systems in our test lab. Here is our SP1 installation results:
System #1 allowed us to install sp1 on (an HP laptop), but seems slightly slower for the past 2 days. We believe it is due to the "prefetch" data issue, but as of right now, it's at least usable. At least the wireless doesn't disconnect every few hours, so SP1 seemed to fix that. All in all better, but the speed isue is concerning.
System #2 (an HP desktop) gets to stage 3 100% and then "reverted"? all the changes. Took an entire day to perform absolutely nothing but grind the HD. Repeated it yesterday. Same issue this morning. SP1 won't install corrrectly even from Windows update.
System #3 (a Lenovo Thinkpad) Can't apply the pre-requisite KB943302. Phone support is stumped. E-mail support was actually better, but led us through the same steps already outlined in this article with no results other than it won't install other than an 800-type error code.
All in all, a complete bust for SP1 for us. Vista RTM actually works on all three systems. Apply SP1, and all three break. Unsure of what to think at the moment other than complete disgust for Microsoft. A typical home user doesn't stand a chance.
CreativeGuy,
Seeing as you have the ability to test these machines, could you share with us the data from your event logs from each machine logged on the errors you received? The spec.'s on each machine would also prove helpful.
As for KB943302, the Application Compatability Update, do you have any of the programs installed that this update addresses? Perhaps it would be pertinent to remove the incompatible applications, run the update, and then re-install? Honestly not sure of this but I would think the fact that MS is clearly informing us that these version of these programs are in fact incompatible with Vista would inform a technical tester that they should be removed until an update is present, which is update KB943302?
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Well I got the SP1 to install by downloading the standalone version and disabling all the non-MS startups and processes in msconfig.
Now however I get a error message:
"Windows Process (Rundll32) has stopped working"
The "online solution" does not help, it just closes the program.
Any suggestions? The issue did not appear until right after the first boot up after the SP1 install.
Packard8,
You should be able to find an event in event manager that will have more data. To find event viewer, simply type event at the search text area in the start menu.
"Many people say eventing and tracing are boring. Others complain that, more often than not, traces and events are merely by-products of secondary activities (such as debugging and self-monitoring features), and that not enough importance is placed on eventing and tracing capabilities.
Microsoft® Windows Vista™ aims to change these perceptions, offering a giant step forward in enterprise management. Microsoft has overhauled some of the key components and their user interfaces. The Event Log service has been completely rewritten with the enterprise in mind, and tracing has been made much faster and more secure.
Imagine having a better set of tools for discovering and resolving problems with mission-critical systems. Or how about features that let a support technician easily collect tell-tale events and traces from a user's system? Or what if your developers could diagnose and fix bugs in a deployed system using traces sent by users on the fly? Imagine you have easier, more powerful ways to gather information and quickly perform troubleshooting—now that doesn't sound so boring, does it?"
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc160886.aspx
Anyone who does their own servicing on a Windows Vista computer should learn and use these valuable tools. They are also part of XP but not nearly as robust as in Vista. I do believe they are included in all versions of Vista. I particularly like the ability to easily filter the logs. The event logs will point you to some data that may be unclear to many but by simply researching online the key words and error codes one can often find a solution from others who have had the same issue. Never download any so called fixes from any forums. Look for tech journals, etc.
Also, from control panel, you should find 'problem reports and solutions', which should now have an item on this issue. Review it, and again, research a bit.
Of course, now would be a good time to contact MS Support, also.
I installed SP1, after uninstalling all the unsupported language packs. (Which took 20 minutes each!) The computer is a bit faster, and a few annoying bugs were corrected. Thanks, Microsoft!
still no Vista SP1 and i wouldn't have it any other way! IE7 has been crashing more often since the last update was pushed on me but i am going to download Firefox and fix that. i enjoy reading all these whiney posts. reminds me why i lockdown end-user systems that i provide support for. you people just don't learn.
Thanks iRead,good info.
I traced the problem to an Iolo System Mechanic component, sguard.dll. After trying to isolate it with no success I just uninstalled the entire program and that fixed the issue. I notified Iolo...maybe they will have a fix.
Gee elhombre,
You sound like a really nice guy. I haven't noticed any "whiney" "you People" here, just folks with problems and others kind enough to help them....and the occasional wise a$$ with nothing positive to contribute.
iRead - i have followed those Checksure instructions but no success.
I am expecting a phone call from a MS person in America to go through the issues that I am having and sent him the short versions from the problem report section. The two that are causing me problems are wcp.... and cbs... (sorry can't remember the rest as I am not on my own computer)
Will be sending him the full detail logs soon. Can anyone recommend a good zip program (prefereably free as i don't send much) or can Vista do it for me?
Glad to be of assistance.
Richingham,
Vista does have a file compression and extraction utility built in. Just right click on the item(s) and click Send To>Compressed (zipped) Folder or on an already compressed folder to extract.
The most popular third party file compression and extraction utility for Windows is WinZip. You can find the latest trial version on download.com where 180,573,495 people have downloaded it. It's not free but worth every penny.
Winzip has been around about as long as me and they likely hold some key patents on file compression and extraction that others can't copy or they don't license.
I know many think MS owns every bit of intellectual property around, but they don't.
I have used WinZip at work and home for many years.
That being said, I find less need for zipping files these days with broadband, online storage, and large file sizes being allowed by most ISP's. Also, for example, thumb drives are so inexpensive now it is often easiest to just throw it on a thumb drive and take it with you.
SP1 is not ready for prime-time, in my opinion. I have installed SP1 on a Dell Latitude D630 with up-to-date drivers. I am using MS Defender and Firewall included with Vista Ultimate. I have never had a BSOD since purchase in November. Since I installed SP1, I have a random BSOD every day, all seemingly memory manager related. I have sent all dumps to MS via the auto-reporting mechanism. I have used WinDbg to see if there is an errant driver; there is none indicated. SP1 may speed some things up but if the cost is BSODs, there is going to be a major issue in April. The SP1 I installed was in the stand-alone package.
PeteSL,
Are you running the 32 or 64 bit version?
Which processor do you have?
Do you have just the Intel Integrated Graphics or did you get:
"NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 135M4
The NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M offers all the latest graphics technology to produce extraordinary visual effects, robust wide-aspect LCD support and compatibility with all major business applications."
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/latit_d630?c=us&l=en&s=biz&cs=555
?
I would also contact Wave about SP1 compatibility:
"Wave Embassy® Trust Suite by Wave Systems security software"
I would also review the installed memory modules/configuration and the notes on memory on both the link above and on technet for the version of windows you are running.
Pete, can you right click on "Computer" from the start menu, select properties, click on Windows Experience Index, and tell us what the 5 scores are?
Mine are:
4.2
5.0
5.9
5.7
in the order shown.
The lowest item in my list is the Intel 3.0E HT processor, which performs great with SP1.
The next is memory, I only have 2GB installed, run very high end games and have never had a memory related BSOD, in fact I have never had a BSOD since WinME.
The BSOD could be caused by faulty hardware, also. Dell typically has utilites to run to check the hardware before a service return is authorized. Check with them on that.
I had some troubles getting Vista SP1 to show up on Windows Update. Uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers and there it was.
That was back on March 23rd. It is now late on March 29th and all is well.
I'm running Vista Ultimate on an Alienware high end machine...no exotic hardware, but solid performance with Intel chip, 680i MoBo and SLI graphics. All drivers updated. Nothing on sp1 "kill" list. Windows Update offered me sp1 and I downloaded. Installation hung on step three, machine then went into a continuous reboot cycle punctuated by a flash of BSOD which was, as usual, too brief to be of any use. I reclaimed my system with RESTORE, downloaded the standalone version, and the same process repeated itself. My AV is Onecare and all other running programs were checked and inactivated.
I'm inventing a new word---VISTAPOINTMENT!!! That's what happens to a power user who gets sucked into early upgrades of operating systems that remain perpetually BETA!!
So, now, to protect my self from my own OS, I have automatic upgrades turned off, the One care icon glares at me with a red eye and I await off shore Microsoft free support (worth every penny) to take me through the laborious and time consuming process of dismantling my system piece by piece in order to install this sidegrade (I refuse to call it an upgrade).
For the first time since I started using personal computers, I'm beginning to see the value of a Mac.
Let the Buyer Beware!!
Update to post earlier that one of my two machines installed 64bit SP1 OK, and the other looped in Audiodg.exe afterwards.
Turns out that the machine I thought had installed OK was now refusing to print to my two Samsung laser printers. Ooops. Just said 'Error' on the print queue. Marvellous. uninstalled all printer drivers, downloaded latest, reinstalled, and it now works OK
On the other PC whic had the Audioddg.exe problem, I reinstalledall my Logitech webcam drivers, and, thus far, no problems.
Having 25 years of professional IT under my belt, I think I can confidently assert that the SP1 install is not friendly to existing drivers. I wonder why. Seems like a screw-up to me.
IMHO, anyone with 25 years of IT, should be reviewing WinPE and building a disk image that contains the latest drivers for their equipment, not complaining in a forum.
MS has spent much time and resources to reduce the cost of Windows IT management for their business customers. Please review the topics available on this on Technet.

"IMHO, anyone with 25 years of IT, should be reviewing WinPE and building a disk image that contains the latest drivers for their equipment, not complaining in a forum."
iRead - As far as I can tell, we all have the right to complain in these forums and state our opinion.
All KieranM said was "the SP1 install is not friendly to existing drivers" and you come back with "anyone with 25 years of IT..." and try to tell him what to do, like he/she's some child. It's true. SP1 has massive driver problems with re-installing that make it unfriendly.
People have legitimate complaints. May I sugggest to butt out, go see a movie, and let the official Microsoft personnal (aka Brandon, Nick, etc) address these comments. Not you. You seem to be h#ll bent on proving that SP1 is made of gold, and that my friend, is a failed cause.
Just want to leave a comment on my extreme disappointment with Vista and MS overall. I dont comment often but I just felt I have to vent somewhere on my disappointment. I bought a new system with Vista installed and am now severely regretting it. Other than the Media Center tools, Vista is a poor system. The performance of Vista is terrible and the compatibility lacks. I truly dont see how Vista is an improvement over XP. Its unfortunate but I think MS has gone backwards. I can go on and on about my disatisfaction but I wont. At this point I really may have to start looking for an alternative system. I'm tired of dealing with MS disappointments.
This is amazing, and the reason for a lot of our problems with Vista. Check this out http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&thread.id=116332
I am glad I associate myself with those who chose to educate themselves and find solutions, who share those solutions, and are willing to call people who claim to have considerable experience with the issues at hand, yet have difficulties with the very simplest of IT matters, by a name other than expert.
I have provided help in this forum that has pointed some in the right direction, and have been thanked for such. I shall recall their gratitude and ignore those who chose only to complain.

I'm having a problem with sorting the postings on this site,the help instructions say;
To sort simply click on the options button at the bottom of the screen and select your desired sort order and click 'Apply'.
However, I can even find an options button, thanks in advance for any help
Saldanai,
Use F3 and search for the users name or the subject or use the RSS feed (top center of page) and a good feed reader (like IE7) and search the feed.
Of course, you could use the search function at the top of the page, also.
Hi i just recently saw the update for windows sp1 and ofcourse went to download it. However i get the error code Windows Update error 80070002. I went into safe mode and deleted the files inside the folder but then it wouldnt show windows sp1 so i restored them now im sorta stuck here. any tips?
What is going on with this Blog?
I have been posting comments and have not seen any updates from Mr. Nick White, regarding the many problems Vista SP1 brings - even just to download the bloody thing.
Vista SP1 is "hailed" to be a curative solution for many of the problems which were not properly addressed before the introduction of this Operating System in the first place.
I have only seen the opposite!!
Never, in my entire IT career have I read so many complaints from people and the lack of Microsoft formally admitting that there are many problems that need to be addressed.
In my opinion, Vista was rushed out the door and even more so with SP1. What has happened to Quality Assurance? Why has Vista, with in excess of 1 year out of the gate causing so much frustration?
XP was never like this - XP SP1 and XP2 have been so hugely popular - I have clients asking me strip Vista from their systems and install XP instead. At least it is stable.
So, I ask for an update and clarification from Microsoft on this subject. We all know that this is not the only priority within the company - even though it should be one of the top three.
We cannot have half-backed hacker solutions to all of this, at best. We need for SP1 to be pulled back, reworked and released again when most or all of these issues have been researched and properly addressed.
Am I wrong? Please comment!
Would there be any chance at all that you guys could release an ISO for download of a Windows Vista installation DVD with SP1 integrated/slipstreamed? With XP I was used to making myself a slipstream disc when SPs 1 and 2 came out, for obvious reasons of convenience and performance.
However after some Googling it appears that this can't be done with Vista whilst maintaining all editions on the same disc, and for an enthusiast/system builder like me that'd be a disaster.
Obviously the product would still only be properly usable with a valid product key so I shouldn't think that would increase piracy at all, and as a gesture it would be greatly appreciated by the community if Microsoft could allow enthusiasts that can't afford a TechNet or MSDN subscription to download a slipstreamed ISO. Maybe you could make us input our serial numbers first before allowing the download, to ensure it isn't abused?
Anyway, if you could consider that I know I for one would be very grateful! Email me from my (out of date!) web site if you'd like to discuss this with me outside of this comment field :)

Other than the modem that the driver stopped working with Vista after SP1, and Creative decided to stop supporting it, my SP1 experience was no worse the XP SP2. My XP disk was from the original release, and if I don't install SP2 and my drivers, just right, it stops working. I had to do a clean install with that too, as it didn't upgrade successfully, and everyone else that I talked to when SP2 came out had the same problem.
Additional points -
To be fair, Hardware and Software manufacturers have to also work very closely with Microsoft and in a timely manner.
Still, this should have been condidered by Microsoft before Vista and SP1 were released.
Enough said.
That had also been a problem with XP too though. There was also a lot of issues where DOS based games or apps wouldn't work anymore, and some never did anymore...that was a few dollars down the drain...
You can never achieve perfection.
It is something to strive for, though. I have a few Dell XPS 410's with SigmaTel audio.
Considering the many thousands of them out in the field it is not a trivial matter when you cannot download SP1 nor install it correctly.
I too find it strange that Nick White starts this blog and has yet to be heard from since (after 439 "comments").
Why do I feel uncomfortable that a Microsoft VAR/Systems Integrator and Partner is using this forum? I feel confident that a Microsoft VAR/Systems Integrator and Partner has other channels directly with MS. Why does this seem to me to be off base?
BTW, this issue has been addressed in this forum by jamieburchell:
"Russieb and others regarding Sigmatel drivers.
This basically means using an older driver but for now until the OEMs release a new one this seems to have done the trick."
Seems clear to me.
Hey Compumind, TXCruiser and everyone else: as I've stated before, I read every single comment posted to every one of our blog entries. In the case of this post, Brandon has done a great job at fielding your commentary and feedback and also has marshaled our support personnel so that you can seek effective resolution of your issues. He's done such a great job, in fact, that there's been mainly little more for me to add and hence, I've kept my peace.
To be clear, we've never trumpeted SP1 as a cure-all or broad panacea, but rather as an improvement on Windows Vista RTM in the vast majority of installations. Our installation reporting tools show that this it has been. Nevertheless, we certainly recognize that it has not gone smoothly in the case of every single customer, and in particular for some readers of this blog. Bear in mind that there will be issues in a small number of cases and that those customers who experience problems are more likely to register their voices than those for whom the process comes off without issue (the comment volume here surely attests to that). Those of you who work in software or IT have an idea of what we’re trying to accomplish with SP1 and the attendant issue rate. We've done our best to respond to the issues you've shared with us and to provide avenues for resolution. If SP1 did not work for you, we ask that you review the instructions Brandon has provided here; you're also welcome to let us know the particulars of your situation by commenting here. Because we read each and every comment, Brandon and I will ensure that your voice is heard and that the product team is aware of your feedback.
I appreciate those of you who've kept the conversation constructive, as those are the comments we are best able to act upon. Every one of you who has experienced an issue has important information for us to hear and take into consideration.
Finally, a broader thanks goes out to everyone who has taken the time to comment here -- you've kept us apprised of your experience in the moment and given us the opportunity to further improve upon SP1. I can assure you that we are doing exactly that.
Compumind, nothing is wrong with this blog.
It is my job to help respond to comments which is why I'm doing so here. Nick chimes in when he needs to. I've been making myself available here via comments especially on this post - having two of us running over each other's toes wouldn't make sense.
Microsoft is not giving "half-backed hacker" solutions to SP1 issues. We do not support many of these "solutions" folks are offering in the comments here on this blog. Our official response is for you to contact a Microsoft Support Agent as they are well equipped to help you with your SP1 installation issues. You can do so going here:
SP1 won't be pulled back however Microsoft continues to be working on the issues being reported here, through the Support channels, and elsewhere.
We will try to post a update to the status of SP1 here on the blog in the near future.
Rest assured your feedback is certainly being relayed to the folks working on the issues and who are responsible for SP1.
Installation reporting tools probably don't show those installs where the system never booted again without having to reinstall windows...as two of my systems did... They seem to generally work fine from a clean install now though, although I do get the occasional word file that shows up in my recent files, but word can't find when I try to open it from there... Not sure why because it opens fine from the recent files in word, and sometimes it opens fine the other way..
Thank you for your valuable advice.
However, I feel I should point out that I was not actually 'complaining' about SP1, more a case of making some observations, and surely that is a legitimate undertaking in this forum?
The bottom line is that the SP1 installation is clearly not bullet-proof. From my perspective, this is an annoyance, rather than a 'rip your hair out' disaster.
On the other hand, for a 'normal' user, any hiccups along the way are likely to result in some discomfort. It was these people I was thinking of.
On the plus side, full credit to MS for system restore doing an excellent job rolling back my initial SP1 install. Also, I have to say I am generally happy with Vista per se, so have no real axe to grind.
Hello Nick and Brandon:
Thank you both very much for your responses!
I appreciate the fact that Microsoft is indeed looking at the SP1 situation very seriously.
As mentioned in a previous commentary, I like Microsoft and am pleased to be a partner.
With that said, let me briefly explain about the feelings of the end-user. Most of the commentary in this Blog is of a technical nature. The end-user just wants a product that works, without error messages and other problems. This will come with maturity.
The desirable nature of the Apple MAC is it's ease-of-use and overall stability.
Then again, it's NOT a PC. Guess you both know that already.
In the case of Dell, when I call their XPS Technical Support and they direct me to a KB such as:
What should the end-user do? They are totally amiss concerning the procedures, which may or many not address their situation.
Therefore, a "regular" update in this Blog is crucial for me to help support these people and myself.
I have my own Microsoft partner support channels and other resources which are many times only slightly better than the support which an end-user will receive.
So, here I am attempting to get some resolution to the problems encountered with SP1.
If you peruse my commentaries, you will see that I am only trying to share my concerns and issues with you for the betterment of Vista.
Thank you for your ear and I look forward to your continued commentaries.
Without wanting to sound like a suckup, I'd like to reiterate what Nick and Brandon have been saying about customer experiences.
I used to have an MSDN subscription so I was lucky enough to be able to get the RTM build pretty much as soon as it was finished. I installed it on my Dell Inspiron 6400 (I was staying in France at the time so it was my only machine) and even though not all the drivers were out etc., I had absolutely no problems whatsoever and had an absolutely excellent user experience.
Sure, there are still problems here and there... for one I don't like how over the ~18 months I've had to format and reinstall every 3-4 months to fix a problem or general performance. But that's Windows for you, and it's just something that needs to continue being improved over time. However, Vista is a huge huge improvement over XP, and I really can't understand people who when they have a legit copy of Vista choose to use XP instead.
At the risk of offending those who've had problems, I'd say in 90% of cases it's the fault of the user rather than with Vista and/or problematic drivers. Sure, that 10% exists but I'd say it's probably only about that, ten percent...
Since first installing Vista on my own laptop, I've been using it every day on that and my (very old) desktop. It runs like a dream on my old Pentium 4 3Ghz with 2GB RAM (Only recently bothered to upgrade from 1GB... didnt really need to on this one, but it was just so cheap...)
I've also had countless experiences of installing it, and more recently the SP1, on other machines for various clients and I can really say that I've not had one issue with it. And if I had, I would have just solved the issue, not slated it and craved for XP.... to be honest XP has more holes than a sieve! And I'd never, ever recommend it over Vista unless the computer was really so old it can't run it.
So I'd like to be one of the few users who pipes up to say what a great product Vista is... sure, it's not perfect but then what is? Keep up the good work Microsoft, I know it's a work in progress just like everything of this nature is.
One last plea: PLEASE let me download an .iso of an integrated SP1 install disc with all editions on... I'd be *SO* useful! I'll happily prove I have a licence to do so....
KieranM, everyone:
I can certainly appreciate the fact that many Vista users simply do not have the know how to deal with the problems beset onto them (by poor overall system implementation by the major OEM's). I ask then, and I do ask this of MS, when servicing peoples computers becomes a boon to the OEM's, who needs to bring them on par that this is just simply not acceptable?
I ask readers here to review my posts, and strongly suggest that you can take the non-OEM versions of hardware that is in each of those major OEM's computers, build a PC, add a new HD with a full retail version of Windows and not have even a small percentage of the issues faced by those who have bought a PC from an OEM.
If, as some have colluded already, MS is far too supportive of the financial goals of some of their hardware partners, then I say this must end, and end today.
So, as you can see, I have my own thoughts on all of this, which is not that MS and their hardware partners are not working together, clearly they are, it is that MS should simply make rules that apply to all hardware makers and be done with it. It is at the same time that MS release, in a clear and public way, the hardware configurations it recommends, not just minimum spec's.
This same goal must also be stringently applied to all software, including any that the OEM's throw in (and shouldn't).
This all being said, I certainly still advise those who do not want to take the time to read the notes, or simply do not understand, to hire a professional (and, yes, that starts with MS Support - but don't expect them to teach you how to maintain a computer).
Which, of course, brings us right back to square one.
So what is the solution? Yes, whether they like it or not, the hardware people need to maintain standards and stop changing them on a whim. Basic hardware should run basic software, premium hardware should run premium software, business systems are generally high end as they are an invaluable tool to industry, and ultimately, the best PC's should run Ultimate, and we all know that there is server grade hardware.
Why so few get that is beyond my comprehension.
The best MS can do is make the above true (they have) and hope the OEM's follow the rules and are honest with their customers when they are not.
iRead,
You make a number of points, some of which are best discussed over several beers.
But... the problem remains that the Vista SP1 install does not look after your drivers as it should. In my case, any drivers I downloaded post-SP1 install (to return my machine to it's full working state) were the same version as I already had on the machines pre-SP1 install. Therefore it seems clear to me that the manner in which the SP1 install handled drivers was not satisfactory. No amount of spin can alter that.
The fact is, 95% of people who use computers are somewhat clueless as to what actually make them work. Do they need to know how computers work? I would say not. No more than a car driver needs to know how their car fits together under the bonnet. My point is that, if MS are to provide, and encourage the use of, Windows Update, then whatever comes out of it needs to be fool-proof from the perspective of the user. At the very least things that worked before should still work afterwards. Anything more is a bonus. Which leads me to...
Should we really allow updates to be installed on our computers if they are already working OK? After all, mobile phone and motherboard manufacturers are careful to state that you should only perform firmware updates if a new release fixes a problem you are experiencing. Where might that sit with Windows Update, and the manner in which is part of daily life? Maybe a bit of reeducation is required regarding the unrgency/necessity of performing updates...
I'm running Vista 64 Enterprise. WU didn't list SP1 until I removed the Ink Correction option from the Regional and Language Options - Keyboards and Languages. I havn't seen this documented anywhere else so I thought I'd post it here.
KiernanM,
Sorry to report that I find it rather humorous how you have used the car example. Can you also please provide statistics on 'users' upgrading the engine in the car of their choice, in their living room, by themselves?
You say no one needs to know what is under the bonnet (hood for us on this side of the pond), but when it does come to upgrade or repair what is under there, how many actually do the work themselves? Almost no one. They hire a professional.
I say when 95% of drivers can add 100HP to their car and make it run for 7 years, I will agree with your analogy. Until then, if you would not take apart your car, your washer, your dryer, your TV, your house, then why in god's name are you taking your computer apart?
Simply because a part is available does not mean that you yourself have to install it, right?
When someone can answer that to me, I will be a much happier man.
BTW, please don't do the things noted above just to prove me wrong.
The notion that computer upgrades are simple is wrong. The only ones who say that, IMHO, without a full disclaimer that this is not simple and should only be attempted by trained personnel (as I have stated clearly) are only looking to sell more wares.
In closing, when we see those who proclaim to be experts having what should be, to an expert, a simple problem, we should pause and question the validity of such.
Wow.
I understand that Mr. Nick White is no longer with Microsoft. I wish him the best of luck.
Nevertheless, the myriad of SP1 issues still remain.
In my many past comments here, I believe that my feelings were fairly communicated and that there is little need for more.
Therefore, this post will be my last.
I will be reading comments and acting just like a "regular" end-user to see if the problems with SP1 are resolved and amount of time it takes to do it.
So far, I have just noticed "Blog Talk" and no real action on the part of Microsoft.
Hopefully, this will change.
Best to all.
Two weeks running two machines with Vista SP1 and not an issue. I thank MS for this update and improved security.
The fact that there have been few new posts here in the last several days shows me that the few minor wrinkles have been worked out.
BTW, Compumind, if you were a channel partner, you would not be tooting another product here or looking here for someone to magically fix your perceived issue.
I shall disregard your comments, enjoy my April Fools Day, and remember you in that regard always.
Compumind (and others), we are taking action regarding SP1 issues via the proper Microsoft Support channels. We take this very seriously. And of course "blog talk" is what you'll find on a blog right?
Sorry to repeat myself again but this blog is not a technical support channel. We cannot solve your problems here - only direct you to where you can get help in solving your issues in regards to your installation of Windows Vista SP1. As we continue to blog here and interact with folks via comments - we continue to be dedicated to helping folks find answers and direct them to get the support they need. I also continue to direct feedback being left here to folks internally at Microsoft.
You can still get and continue to get support for Windows Vista SP1 here:
Be sure you choose the option "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (All Languages)".
Also: compumind, you should feel free to continue to leave comments and say what is important to you (of course as long as it remains constructive). There is no need for your comment to be your last. Its great interacting with folks such as yourself and many others here via comments on the blog.
gkanitz, thanks for leaving a comment about your findings! I am forwarding it on to the folks working on SP1 here at Microsoft.
I agree with everything you have said. I just don't understand how I can have been so misguided, so unenlightened, and so full of myself. I just hope my ego will survive.
iRead knows it all. Listen in awe while he belittles you and tells you about your "perceived" issues with Vista.
My, oh, my. Glad we have people like iRead who can sacrifice their life in order to monitor these threads and show us how unenlightened, backwards, and wrong our perceptions of reality really are.
Thank you iRead. Thank you.
Now, can we get some REAL support around here Microsfot? Please?
<rolleyes>
I created the iRead ID here specifically as a play on words pointed at thsoe who do not read, yet complain loudly when the data was right in front of them. Therefore, I continue to be amused.
Hi, I have Garmin Nuvi GPS Unit, and am running Windows Vista Business. I have issues with Windows. Whenever I connect my GPS Unit to pc by using USB Cable, Unknown device connected. I have checked Garmin website, and found no result on how to fix this prob. Have tried on every usb port on my pc. Will Vista SP1 fix this problem??
Garmin support site has manuals:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/userManual.jsp
I would also navigate to this url:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download.jsp
"I created the iRead ID here specifically as a play on words"...
Oh, yes iRead. Be proud of your accomplishments here. Why without you we'd...well...I dont' know what we'd do and that right there is the point. We don't know what we'd do without you and your "perceived" ways.
It's so good to hear you are fine and well and nothing gets in your way of providing the Vista community with the best self-servicing RTFM-advice available.
Was there something that you wanted to discuss or contribute to this forum, BobWells?
I installed SP1 today. Everything went fine except for the monitor resolution problem.
I have a DELL E228WFP with ATI Radeon HD2400 PRO.
After the service pack installation the maximum resolution that I am able to set on my display is 1024 by 768
Could you please kindly let me know how to resolve the issue as this is not the right resolution for my monitor and I need a higher resolution.
First of all it is good that there is a Microsoft based forum where it appears that staff are listening and trying to be helpful with peoples problems/experiences with Vista.
I have recently built a new PC and decided to go with Vista Home Premium x64 and am writing this from my XP laptop whilst my aforementioned system restores back from Vista SP1. Being available for update, I thought I would give it a shot as I thought maybe it would speed things up a bit and might even fix my WiFi occasional local access only problem.
I've been using Windows for years and I have never had so much problems with an OS. It really is a shame as I want to like it, really like the interface and in theory dx10 is a pretty good thing but once I think it is settled Vista plays up and I am sorry to say that I currently can't recommend the OS to anybody I know - and part of me even regrets the decision to go Vista over tried and very tested XP.
Anyway to let you know I have backtracked on my SP1 install as after the install, my graphics, audio and apparently wireless drivers had mysteriously uninstalled themselves. This would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that without the WiFi access, downloading drivers is via an additional PC and a pen drive. On the best of days I get local access only problems without SP1 on Vista which is what it is doing now even after system restore. Do you have a fix for this yet either?
I really want to like Vista and I am a technophile, however I feel very let down with Vista which has been exasperated through your problems with SP1. I really look forward to the day when Vista will be as stable and easy to work with as XP and I hope that is sooner rather than later.
It is highly recommended that an technophiles who post to a forum for support also post their system spec's.
I'll demonstrate: I have a washer with a worn out fan belt. Can you please give me a replacement?
Mine is still failing to install! I have had email support for the problem which has not been any use as I was instructed to go through the steps that I had already tried, install the pre requisite updates for SP1 etc. The last email i had was to ring the UK support number so from that point of view was a failure from MS.
Fortunately I have been contacted by a MS person requesting that the error log files be zipped up and sent (thank you iRead for the zip tip) to him and he will get back to me if a solution is found. Glad to see MS is looking into the issue.
Rich (happier now that I was in my first post!)
So, went to the site suggested (http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=11732), typed in the required info and got
Error:
An unknown application error occurred. Please try again in a few minutes.
and, it wiped out my personal info so that I have to type it again and a few minutes didn't help, either
Whats ironic, what keeps me from using Vista on a regular basis is the UI, I don't like the fact tool bars, menu bars, icon bars, address bar, are locked into Microsoft's new vision of what Windows should look and feel like. With all the complaints about this, (and I've seen numerous) I would have bet that service pack 1 would addressed this issue for so many of us. I'm a little more than disappointed with Microsoft's stance on this. SP1 did require me to reactivate Vista, a slight inconvenience. I just really wish Microsoft would address the UI issue....
I have been using Vista for a while now and I never noticed that UI problem you mentioned, Photo1921. I didn't even have to reactivate Vista after installing SP1. Maybe you have a bad installation of the OS. I advice backing up and reinstalling Vista.
Mission Impossible: Buying a Windows Vista license
Hi, I am from Rosario, Argentina. Rosario is one of the top 3 cities in my country and it has a population of almost 1 million (I tell you this because is relevant to what I am going to write).
I've recently bought a new notebook with Vista Home Premium, and I decided to buy an upgrade to Vista Ultimate, even though it cost about half of my monthly salary.
I've tried buying it on Microsoft Internet Store, but it will only sale to the US or Canada. So, I called to Microsoft Support Center to ask where I can buy the Vista Upgrade. They gave me the names of 3 resellers none of them had stock of any Windows Vista neither offered me any way to buy the upgrade. I call again to Microsoft, another 3 partners, when I contacted them they told me they had never sold Microsoft products. I called Microsoft for a 3rd time, they told me they will figure it out, and that they will contact me later. They did, and they gave me the phone of a Microsoft Solution Provider, that didn't had stock, and they told they do not usually have. They could get me one but in no less than 45 days (useless for me).
So, they are constantly saying consumer not to use illegal software, but when a client wants to buy a legal copy of Windows Vista it's impossible. It wouldn’t be nice that they spend a little less in those communication campaigns and use that money to search a serious resellers and to control that these resellers keep 1 o 2 of each of their products all the time? So, when some stupid guy like me wants to buy legal software, he is able to do so.
I have been using SP1 since the alpha and I can say I had no problems whatsoever with Vista. Well that may be a lie as I experienced one single BSOD in the last 14 months (I tried to run tcpdump - windows build - in Vista SP1 and it crashed the windows). Overall, since SP1 my system seems faster and comparing to the XP SP2 its a lot more stable. Just give it a Core2Duo and 4Gigs of ram and it will run - fast.
Keep it up!
can not figure out Windows home premium
A few days ago, 2 or 3 days ago, Service Pack 1 did install automatically on my 2.4 Ghx SR5313WM Presario, and I didn't touch a thing, and I just happened to be able to watch the update "fly."
I saw the computer install SP1, shutdown, finish installing SP1 during the shutdown/reboot, but when the computer restarted, the computer "stuck" on the startup screen where the colored bars go across the screen and it just "locked up" there...Stopped cold...I actually had to unplug the computer to get it going again.
I ran the diagnostic, or whatever it's called, but nothing worked until I started normally, but the computer wouldn't work right or properly, so I uninstalled SP1, then I let it re-install itself yesterday.
The computer appears to be working ok now, but even though the computer has 1 Gb of RAM, sometimes it says that I'm low on resources or RAM, even though I'm not running much extra stuff.
I'm not running the weather "stuff" I was running earlier, I'm not running Google Earth, like before, I'm not running Last.FM, or Last.FM Helper, or that weather plug-in or add-on that I used to use with the Firefox browser...that was Fox Deluxe or something like that...I'm not running any of the extra add-ons or plug-ins that I used to use, but when trying to install a program that takes care of my photos, it says that I'm low on resources, even though I used to use the program before.
Weird, and one other thing, this is "off-topic" but I used encryption to protect my files when I used WIN-XP, and now, with Windows Vista, I can't even access those files...apparently not only do I need to use the same user name/administrator name as when I encrypted files, I also need to use the same operating system and the same hard drive/same computer to access the files with, so I'm no longer going to use encryption.
For those used to the way Windows has worked in the past, like e-mail for a small example, and the way you uninstall programs, etc., you now need to "relearn" a few things, as there's no longer an Outlook Express, it's Windows Mail now, and there isn't an Add/Remove Programs either, it's "Programs and Features," etc...the "way you do things" have changed quite a bit, as far as I'm concerned anyway, with Windows Vista over the way Windows worked before.
Also, I used to use WIN98SE and WIN-XP, both of which I had purchased in a store, then one day, when trying to install WIN-XP again, after installing it a few times in the past because of a failed hard drive, or because of buying a different computer, etc., I received a message stating that I ran out of activations, and they wanted me to send them another $80.00 or so to "buy" another activation key.
Well, after spending over $200.00 on operating system software, I didn't feel like sending them another $80.00, as I wasn't running a business, just personal, home use, so I then downloaded an ISO image of SUSE Linux, since my ISP had been using that operating system, and tried that out...Later on I downloaded Mandriva Linux and installed that, and was using that until I got this 2.4 Ghz Presario, which came with Windows Vista Home Premium on it, and I have made a set of recovery disks for it, 3 of them altogether, but that was before SP1, so if I need to re-install/recover, then I'll have them available.
I am having problems with Vista though, like I can't import pictures from my digital camera for example, because there isn't a Windows Vista driver available for it, and the GE Easycam webcam is unusable also, but at least I can use the Labtec webcam, although it's a cheaper webcam than the GE is and it doesn't even have a decent base to it, just a small, rubber one, whereas the GE webcam has a better base, etc...
Well, Have a Great Day,
Bernardlj
I've spent the weekend trying to install SP-1. There seems to be a real issue with the way the install handles drivers. I have two machines with 680i chipset motherboards that run in RAID 0 config. One installed effortlessly and is running well. The other refuses to recognize my boot drive after Stage 2 restart, giving me a 0x7B Stop error requiring System Restore. This clearly is an issue with SATA/RAID that has occured to quite a few people blogging on the net. I am already working with MS Support, but they communicate poorly and seem overwhelmed. I join others who feel that sp-1 seems to be fine for some, but is a beta product.
sachin, as you have avg free edition and you want to desable it completely you need to go to start-run-then type services.msc-ok to it you will get services local window select avg -rightclickthen click on properties you will find startup type as automatic click on dropdown menu beside it click on desable then below service status is needed to stop aply then ok go for all avgs and try after restarting pc hope it will work.
hi
As i read your concern windows vista has a strong security center so you need to get configured and make it compaitable with firewall or anti virus /any icon (software)or (isp) does not work then simply right click on the icon left click on properties and then click on compatiblity and check first and the last box where it states run this programme in compaitable mode for windows xpsp2 and run as an administrator then click on aply and ok it will start working and error for enough memory will not appear any more while connecting to isp
I'm running a Portuguese version of Vista Ultimate. When will SP1 be available for the this and other languages...?
aemarques, we will be posting more information on the rest of the languages for SP1 in the near future.
Honestly nothing short of a miracle can save
Vistas reputation. Its the Windows ME that
I thought would never happen again.
The bungled SP1 deployment, the lawsuits on Vista Ready hardware, the list goes on.
I can find no independant review that states
Vista Sp1 is "significantly" faster than XP but could find plenty of comments about how Vista doesnt work with App X Y or Z or doesnt work with hardware X Y or Z. Of course all those things work in XP just fine. Worse yet, people uninstall Vista, install XP and get a noticable performance boost. The internet is full of those stories.
This is horrific. Over 20 years in the software
biz coding Ms stuff and I cant figure out
how this could happen again!
MS doesnt lack money, nor personal to make an OS.
So something must be fundementally wrong in the
MS management chain.
I would love to hear what people think
allowed something like Vista to be made.
Too many Kingdoms perhaps?
I am sure internally there are quite a few folks pointing fingers in the other direction.
As for me I have a 64 bit version of Vista sitting on a shelf because I dont want to deal with the frustration named Vista.
I just personally built 3 new quad cores and loaded XP on all of them.
Work just deployed over 100 NEW workstations this week they all have XP on them.
Vistas reputation is such that
not one developer here wanted Vista.
I can recall when XP came out several of us wanted to get our machines updated.
I am a technoholic. If its new and shiny
I want it and I am glad we here are skiping Vista.
This OS is too fat, slow and smart for itself.
I hope MS doesnt make the same mistake with what ever is next.
They can afford to do this again and again as they can twist the PC supply sides arm to force them to use this OR else.
I just dont understand, MS has everything possible at its disposal and created Vista?
Well good luck on the next release of Windows
whatever.
I purchased a Dell laptop in December that came with a Vista 32 bit operating system. I've had a ton of problems with the machine and ended up doing a factory image restore. I would like to get SP1, but I can't figure out how to get it! I have run windows update and it has installed tons of updates, but I don't see SP1 listed. It tells me that no new updates are available. In this blog Nick said, "To determine if you already have SP1 installed, Open the Start Menu, right click on Computer and left click on Properties." I don't see it listed there either, so it's not already installed. How do I get this thing and why isn't windows update getting it to me automatically?
p.s. The problem was identical prior to the factory restore.
I'm one of these who have this "Vista SP1 3/3 100% Service Pack Did Not Install Reverting Changes" -problem.
I have done everything I have found on internet but no luck. I have contected Microsoft and with their instructions I got some changes: now installer stops at 1/3 100%.
Luckily I have True Image so it is quite easy to revert original state after these experiments, but I'm quite disappointed with Vista right now, first time.
I REALLY LIKE TO KNOW, IS MICROSOFT AWARE OF THIS 3/3 100% Service Pack Did Not Install" -problem?
Have been trying to install SP1 x32 since March 18th through update. Athlon 64 on Nvidia Nforce4 mobo. PCI-e root port fails to work after SP1 so no graphics card. Reported through MS Tech Support, they say they can't resolve it. Banking on Nvidia Tech Support now. Only good thing is rolling back works a treat. I've had a lot of experience at it now.
I installed SP1 with very little trouble - the only small glitch was that initially I had no sound, but restarting fixed that.
The problem came when I did the manual install for the SigmaTel Audio CODEC Driver 6.10.5614.0. Now I have no sound at all. The install notes warn that this may happen because "After installing this driver, some audio settings are reset to factory defaults." And then it tells me to go to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound -> Playback or Recording tabs and "change audio settings back to your preferences".
Well, that's completely unhelpful. I know nothing about those settings - never had to mess with them before - and I see nothing in there that might explain why I have no sound. I can't even change the settings in Properties, because it just keeps telling me that the driver is working correctly.
Can anyone help me? I use my laptop for everything, and I'm really screwed without sound. I can't even get into Vaio e-support - it just keeps telling me the server is busy.
Oh, thank god.
It's funny how the second I give up and ask for help, I find the solution. It was incredibly simple. I had to highlight Speakers/Headphones and click 'use default'.
Hope that helps some other clueless person!
I posted about the BSODs on my Dell Latitude D630 on March 29. Sorry it has been so long reposting but work got in the way of reporting back. I continued to get the BSOD. I am running the Intel graphics chipset. My memory is fine (passes all diagnostics). All drivers and bios are 100% up-to-date per Dell web site (32-bit Vista Ultimate).
I did note that SP1 reported about 127,000 bytes less RAM than pre-SP1. The BSODs have continued about once per day since SP1 installation. I am now running AVG antivirus, MS Defender, and MS Firewall to minimize any interactions from a 3rd party protection suite.
Uninstalled SP1 yesterday morning. System is solid as a rock again. NONE of the BSODs pointed to a driver. All were memory manager related (but not memory releated). Windows Update still does not show SP1 as available which tells me that there is something it is detecting that is preventing it from offering SP1. Too bad it won't tell me what it thinks is not correct.
I have an HP system with Vista 64-bit that is showing SP1 available, but I am scared to death that system will become unstable. It is running a database application using MS SQL 2005 which a BSOD could be deadly to.
I installed the vista(32) sp1 a few days ago. I started out fine, with some good speed increased overall. I had one or BSOD flashes followed by a quick reboot. Now I am getting BSOD's every hour or two. *sigh*
They flash so quickly that it is hard for me to tell what is going on. Sometimes I can't reboot with failed auto chkdsk's before entering windows. I have also repaired the windows install to get it back up and running. Confusing and frustrating, not sure if it is all the same as others have described above, but I just thought I would share my experience.
So is my best option to restore, reinstall, or reinstall but don't install sp1?
I did a restore to before the sp1 install. It didn't seem to help or maybe the damage has already been done.
Currently, I am getting random BSOD flashes with a restart going directly into chkdsk before windows comes up. Chkdsk is finding/fixing(?) several errors before continuing into windows.
I am guessing that my hard drive is somewhat trashed at this point since I can do nothing but boot windows and it will eventually reboot with several disk errors each time. Again, I am not sure this is a sp1 thing but I have ran vista for over a year with no problems. Suddenly now I have BSOD's, disk errors, and an unstable environment since the install of sp1.
Going to try the route of new drive, reinstall vista (no sp1), software install, and see what happens.
Aren't computers fun?!!! NOT!!! =)
SP1 is now showing up in my Dell laptop's WindowsUpdate! I have hidden it until I see that it will no longer cause BSODs. It is no longer showing up on my 64 bit HP desktop (it has not been applied).
I recently built a new system and installed Vista X64 Ultimate. Installed SP1 through Windows Updates and initially everything appeared fine...until I tried to introduce some "new" USB devices...my printer being the most crucial.
After some research I found others were having the problem. I tried uninstalling SP1 and it resolved all my problems EXCEPT for my USB printer. I went with the nuclear option and formatted and reinstalled and did NOT install SP1 this time.
I have not seen any new articles on this particular SP1 issue since about April 19th. Is there any new information regarding the USB issues with SP1 and it's prerequisite update? Will there be a fix soon. I do NOT intend to try installing SP1 until I know there is a definate fix for this one.
Tried to install SP1 on my HP Pavilion yesterday through Windows Update. It took a long time to get as far as step 3 then sat on 0% for a couple of hours doing nothing.
I forced a reboot by disconnecting the power and booted into safe mode. The install continued in safe mode and after a couple of hours step 3 completed but gave me the error that installation had failed and was reverting, which took another hour or so.
Later in the day I tried again, only this time I disabled Norton anti-virus software permanently before install. SP1 installed with no problems in about 25 minutes. I re-enabled Norton and as far as I can tell all hardware and programs are working correctly.
Windows Vista Sp1 is absoluteley CRAP....! never seen like this kind of Service Pack to load 4 Hours and System does freez...
Nick or Brandon, my system just re-booted and Vafter Vista restarted, an error from Microsoft advising me that Intel Turbo Memory needs to be installed. Microsoft took me to this site and installed it. I have 4GB of memory installed. Is this Intel Turbo Memory related with what my system has. I have a Dell XPS 410/RAID 0/2.4 DUO Core. My network adapter is Intel. Do you think the Intel Turbo Memory is link to my network adapter. Please advise. Your help is greatly apreciated..James
Still no European DVB-C Support in Media Center?!?!? That's poor! The implementation to support BDA-Driver DVB-C or DVB-S cards from Microsoft is YEARS behind!
When will they finally be supported with full HD capacities, AC3, and all that comes with it???
I built a new Vista Ultimate x64 machine at the beginning of 2007. I recently formatted and rebuilt it to try and resolve problems with a fresh, clean install.
- 64bit Core2 Duo 2.67GHz
- <strike>P5N32-SLI WiFi Premium</strike> P5NE-SLI (downgrade replacement)
- <strike>HiPer 730W</strike> ThermalTake 850W (upgrade replacement)

From day one, I have had phenomenal hassle and frustration getting all three monitors to run at 1600x1200. Typically it would take 6 or 7 resets before the machine would use all 3 monitors, or I would have to reset the Display Properties manually. I have had to do this on a daily basis - it has cost me one motherboard and one power supply so far.
I have persisted for 18 months now, hoping that the updates from the software and hardware companies would improve things, and to be fair, for a while, they did. In fact, just last week, this machine was working beautifully and I was getting all 3 monitors at full res on the very first boot. It was a golden age.
But recently, and specifically following SP1, I have had no end of pure frustration and despair. My third monitor has been black for days now, none of the usual fixes has worked, the hardware detected sound ding-dongs repeatedly (presumably trying to find the hardware), multiple instances of rundll32.exe are spawned (often more than 100!) processor usage maxes out and the machine chugs along and becomes unusable. It takes hours for this to abate until I can use the computer, and I dare not use Device Manager to find the missing third monitor, or change the Desktop Display Properties, as this triggers another orgy of rundll32.exe processes which bog the machine down for another hour or more!
This is completely insane and I for one (of the apparent many it would seem) have had a guts full of this rubbish and will be rebuilding and formatting this machine to remove Vista forever.
It's enough to make one go and buy a Mac.
October 16, 2008 Vista update totally crashed my Toshiba laptop. Hours to load and screen froze at Step 3. Toshiba now in shop. Could not restore. My bill is $150. Hmmm... And what is Bill Gates' address?
Thanks to the guy who responded to me, sorry that I didn't get to see your comments sooner, as I lost the website address, and I will say that yes, I removed the anti-virus software, plus the SpyBot and SpywareBlaster software, and had turned the firewall off, etc...I also have already Right-clicked on something in WIN-Vista, then have chosen to run the file as an administrator, etc. One problem that in my personal opinion, that I see, is that the operating systems are coming out too quickly, so quickly that half of my hardware won't work because there aren't any WIN-Vista drivers for the hardware, and I'm certainly not going to buy new hardware, that's only a couple of years old, but I will also say that I have been using OpenSUSE Linux since April, but just last week I decided to use the Recovery disks to put WIN-Vista Premium Home Edition back unto the Compaq Presario. Last week, after a few automatic updates within a few days, SP1 came through, it installed, and again the computer won't start. Well, actually the computer starts but Windows does not, and restore won't work, and when I use the fix startup problems automatically, it says that all tests passes and the only notation is that the upgrade was causing the problem, so I have recovered the computer the third time in a week, have reinstalled everything and have restored the files from a backup copy. I have also unchecked the box in the SP1 update, so it won't run, and have placed it into the hidden updates area so that it won't run as it still causes a startup problem for me.
Since there is VISTA SP1, I can expect to have SP 2, SP 3 and SP 4 in the future.
