update @ 14:53 PDT: The exec closest to the development process, Core Operating System Division (COSD) Sr. VP Jon DeVaan, gives his personal take on Windows Vista SP1 over at Press Pass -- check it out.
First, a note on service packs. As you are aware, service packs are part of our traditional software lifecycle; they’re something we do for most major products as a commitment to continuous improvement. But, the servicing situation has changed with the advent of Windows Vista, as we no longer rely solely on service packs as the main vehicle used to deploy system fixes and improvements. The Windows Update online service is one new way to deliver many OS improvements. For example, yesterday in advance of SP1 we released via Windows Update two separate improvements to Windows Vista’s reliability and performance. We did this prior to SP1 in lieu of requiring customers to wait for these fixes to be rolled into a single service pack. Beyond this, we improve the Windows Vista experience by continuing to work closely with software partners to ensure application compatibility. We likewise align efforts with partners on the hardware side of the business to broaden the range of devices that work with Windows Vista and to constantly improve device driver quality.
What is SP1? What is it not?
In addition to updates we’ve previously released, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues we’ve identified via customer feedback, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also makes additional improvements to the IT administration experience. We didn’t design SP1 as a vehicle for releasing new features; however, some existing components do gain enhanced functionality in SP1.
More information on what’s included in SP1 can be found in the detailed white paper.
When can I get my hands on the Beta of SP1?
A Beta release of Windows Vista SP1 is slated for availability in the next few weeks. A small group of testers has been putting a preview of the SP1 Beta through its paces to help prepare for broader release. We made the choice to start with a very small group of testers because we think it’s better for both our customers and for Microsoft to keep the beta program small at the start.
A later pre-release of SP1 will be available to a larger group of testers via MSDN and TechNet subscribers.
And what about SP1 itself -- when will that be available?
We're targeting releasing SP1 to manufacturing in the first quarter of 2008, but as always, we’re first and foremost focused on delivering a high-quality release, so we'll determine the exact release date of SP1 after we have reached that quality bar. (FYI, in case you didn’t already know: the Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 engineering efforts are aligned, so the Server team also said on their blog today that they are targeting the first quarter of 2008 for their release to manufacturing.)
-----
That’s all for now. Expect more SP1 information here on the blog soon, as well as on MSDN and TechNet when the time comes. In the meantime, I’d encourage you to check out the Windows Vista SP1 white paper for more detail. Stay tuned!
Quite possibly one of the best things I have heard all year!
That's a really good news!
great!
Will it fix this that I get using Windows Update? I can't even load the 2 new improvements to Windows Update.
Error Code: 80073712
Any word on whether or not SP1 will correct the problem where you cant install the Exchange 2003 management tools on Vista Business? That would be nice.
Hey blainehuman: the Exchange tools you refer to are not affected by SP1. My understanding is that the root of the issue lies in Exchange Server, not in Windows Vista, and that the Exchange team is aware of it as of this date.
Nick: What are the chances that Vista SP 1 will include Windows Explorer for Windows 2000 for the "Ultimate" Vista user? Some of us still need a fix for the defective "Advanced" Search in Vista that is not reliable and can't find files that Windows Explorer could find in Windows 2000. As an Ultimate Windows Vista paying customer why must I pay for a 3rd party search tool when the one Microsoft had in Windows 2000 doesn't have the same problem? PLEASE LISTEN. Give us an option that works all the time, not one that is fast but cannot be trusted.
http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/pages/advanced-search-techniques.aspx
Above all, in SP1 please fix the crappy copy performance, which is utterly and embarassingly dire. Vista's C&P and unzip speed is awful, far worse than XP and must be fixed. I don't care if it's checking for DRM bits or whatever - it's just got to be a lot faster! Please?
Just wondering, are there any improvements with the Power Management being done ? I am having nVidia Geforce Go 7300 and Dell and have never been succeeded to put my computer sleep...not sure whether this is nVidia or Vista problem..btw, I run Vista ultimate..anyways, am happy to see this news..Thanks Nick...
I love Vista :D,lol
Great News Hopefully SP1 for Vista will be as big a step forward as SP2 was for XP.
Hey tkidma: I searched for that error code and found the solution posted by an MS representative in this forum: http://www.mcse.ms/message2552344.html. Best of luck.
Hi,
Can anybody tell me when using Media Center in Vista Premium I cant see any of my photos. They are all jpegs and I can see the folders they are in but its saying 0 itmes in all folders????
Rowdy.
I heard it's already on torrents, is it true ?
Can I be invite to beta test vista sp1 ? Thanks
Cesare

Thanks for the reply Nick. I did try both fixes recommended. Like a lot of others, I didn't have the reg key indicated and when I deleted the pending.xml file it pretty much corrupted my user profile. I had to use system restore to get back to a point that looked normal. Help!
Will SP1 provide compatibility for the Admin pack tools? Vista is a very pretty OS but its practically useless for an Active Directory Admin. Making a RDP connection to a DC or a management server every time I need to use ADUC or do site management is getting old (and horribly insecure) and the "sort of works" hack to get it running on Vista still isnt 100% functional(DHCP snap-in?). So when is MS going to show it's MCSE's out here some love and give us our tools back?
Hey rowdy: this blog is not best place to get technical support -- you should direct your inquiry to one of the public Windows Vista newsgroups found here: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx.
Hey cesarebalena: I'll see what I can do, but no guarantees that there are still spaces available.
Hey chakkaradeep: glad to hear you're enjoying Windows Vista! You may find that SP1 or the performance and reliability packs I mention in the post above improve your experience resuming from sleep. With respect to what's incuded in SP1, I'd take a close look at the white paper also mentioned above, as it has all the details we're sharing for the moment. When there's more to say on SP1, you'll find it here.
Thanks Nick :)
When will the Service Pack Beta be released for German Windows Vista Version?
Is there any way to have the option added to Vista on choosing where you want My Documents to be saved. I dont know about you but most users that create partitions choose to have their Documents on another partition. Not the default of C:. I make my C: Partition 30 GB and the rest goes to D and so on. When adding movies, music, and pictures C: with the partioning does not have enough space.
I know that each individual file in My Docs location can be changed but it is a PITA. What ever happened to just copying my docs from my backup to where I want them to be?
One final thought please tell me you will fix the COMSurrogate error with Video Files. I have noticed that if you have anything other than List or Details chosen you will get this error. This is because it gives you a thumbnail of the movie. This is an annoying error and I happen to like the thumbnail previews.
@ch46
When saving file types vista should remember where you save your files... i dont use my documents folders either.
.com surrogate problem your is probly your codecs (too many ect the less the better) If you MUSSST have divix install the latest version and the latest version of nero there is some conflict with theese programs fixed MONTHS ago. Id however sugest Combined Comunity Codec for it. Uninstall your divix 3vix and anny other vix u have Combined Comunity Codec will run them all even give qt movies thumnails when changed to mpg. Just search it in yahoo. But if you mussst have your divx get the latest version. If you have nero andddd dvix get the latest version of both.
Many of the complaints are current FIXED, all you need to do is get the updates...
copy and paste and unzip - for my part are FIXED, and work GREAT...faster than on XP SP2.
I have used the internet mod and have NO problems with slow page loading, I have not problems with how many pages I can open. Vista has fixed in my case the PPPOE Internet crap, it finds all the wireless links in the area, and in compare... XP found 4 Vista found 6 from the same spot, speeds are very close... so much I have removed all reference of XP from my systems..maybe your using a Pirate Version. and can not upgrade... huuuummmm..
Vista Ultimate and 2x Home Premium.
Will it allow to install vista onto multiple partitions (ex.: system, programs, user docs/shared docs, app settings/temp folders) from the setup screen/script?
XP was painfull enough (especially shared docs) but straightforward once you knew how to do it.
In rtm I have no clue, and this is a "sine qua non" condition.
Other annoyances are the dumb inability to close sessions from the welcome screen, the utterly stupid exit(sub!)menu, lcd monitors defaulting to 59hz refresh, just because it's available, how easy it is to wipe out entire folder trees when you just want to delete single files, explorer selecting files that you didn't wanted to, etc.!
@ CableGuy: prebeta already has german (de-de; and french, spanish and japanese)
There is an issue I hasn't read about in this SP1 and is codec hell and wmp11; I recently installed the latest version of Divx on my Pavilion Laptop with Vista Home Premium, and from that moment on I just can't open all the videos that worked before, mostly mpeg, just works wmv, I searched for almost two weeks now inside MS KB and no solution has been found, not even from HP, the first thing I did was to remove divx and try again with no results.
I would appreciate you can put me on comunication with someone from the wmp dev team, because I can't find a blog from them to ask about this trouble.
Just to addition to this in these two weeks I have found hundreds of people with similar problems and asking the same.
Thank You.
Will Vista SP1 solve the problem where it seems to take at least 5 minutes after waking up or booting to "identify" the network that it's on? This is somewhat annoying, if I'm waking up a computer just to print a document.
Will we ever be able to adjust how much space System Restore takes up? I only need one or two snapshots.
I would appreciate it if you could get me into the Vista SP1 beta. My email address is grantwarr@msn.com.
@Brytown
I have a very lite installation of codecs, actually 3 in all. I have noticed with Nero's new update it has fixed the COMSurrogate problem a little.
As for my Docs I dont really use it anymore since Vista. My concern is working in the I.T. Field and when we migrate. Users will be using this and our typical procedure is to move My Docs to another location. This is not possible in Vista. You can only move one folder at a time.
Until bugs can be worked out I have rolled back to XP and so has our Development team. There is just to many issues. Issues as a system with 4 GB of RAM and Vista using 40% memeory. Memory issue big time.
Other than that I must say Microsoft has done a god job with this OS. When XP, 2KPRO, 98 (Not Mentioning ME) all had issues when they first came out. More than Vista and the first Sp didnt correct allof them. I am confident with Microsoft in this product but it still needs some work.
One other thing that really needs work is Vista Ultimate. It is suppose to have these extras that are still not fully avialable.
@ Nick
Back to my original posting. Is there anything that is going to be done with these issues?
As for user wanting to use SP1 Beta I would hold off. I just went to a Microsoft TechNet even with them using Vista with SP1 and the system Crashed hard in the middle of the presentation. I must admit this is something I have been waiting for, for some time. I never laughed so hard.
I guess the only other issue I may have is DX10 issues. All of these games coming out with DX10 with the biggest boy on the block for a GPU in SLI and 10FPS? I think I will stick with DX9 if that is the case.
What I dont understand is Microsoft DEV team is stating we will not release SP1 in its final stages until it is released. Why not do the same with your O/S instead of cutting corners to push something out. There is a lot of features that was never included in Vista that was dropped so it could be rushed out. What makes me think any differntly about SP1. It will be rushed ready or not when Server 2008 or Longhorn is relased 1Q.
I am glad that bandwith issues getting corrected with SP1. I can tell you, this is the biggest reasson we are not using Vista right now due to the fact of bandwith consumption on our network for shared drives. It slowed everything to a crawl even for the users on XP.
Clearly SP1 shouldn't be used in a business environment. And of course I understand that there will be a great deal of problems with SP1 at the moment.
However, I feel it's worth the risk, to insure that all of the potential bugs during our use of the machine will be reported and fixed, to have a more stable product in the end.
@ Ch46 great im glad to see it helped, If your still noticing that your thumbnails have to draw EVERYTIME you open a folder (which they shouldnt and i noticed even after neros *airquotes* "UP DATES" then its still your codecs id go with comunity codec once again but try reinstalling the all together comunit is fast install and prety much blew away all my previous codec. Onlything id watch out for it the .mov files change them to .mpg they crash explorer but i do beleve they have fixed this in the newer version. Ok best of luck ch
Good afternoon Nick - it’s nice to see Microsoft trying to address issues with Vista.
The reason I am posting is that I would like to ask a question on behalf of the gaming community (which is supported under the games for windows idiom)
First and foremost is the driver signing issue. Many companies I have heard refuse to do certified Microsoft drivers for the cost and work involved, this includes Netcom. Why is Driver signing so important to the end user? It never seemed to be a problem in XP. Is service pack 1 going to allow you the option to just CHOOSE whether you want to check for signed drivers?
Because of the driver signing issue, many of us cannot risk having hardware conflicts with the OS. We are talking serious outlays of money for systems way above the average office machine.
If this issue is fixed, then a lot of people in the gaming world will upgrade I would imagine. If not, I guess many will hold with XP.
I am sorry if I posted in the wrong place, but in the white paper the work that was being done on the issue mentioned was a little ambiguous.
i've got similiar problem with divx and SP1 for vista.
after instaled SP1 when playing any divx movie after i got "invalid floating point operation". i tryed this on Divx 6.x.x (newest one), xvid, ffdshow.
lol... So, SP1 makes the Divx6.6.x or *.avi issue even worse. That is great news! I am wondering if Microsoft considers this an issue since a lot of Divx formats can be attributed to illegal downloads. But, there are legitimate uses for this format considering the compression and quality of Divx.
I actually use K-lite or I have even tried the individual codecs with nothing installed except the codec itself. I do this a lot with apps as I dont need all the junk that comes with it. I just want the app and that is it.
I know what you are talking about the so called "UPDATES" from NERO but the same is with Nvidia and the likes. Heck, I have issues with my X-Fi Fatality with Vista. Everyone seems to be having issues with the drivers.
I dont know if this is just because Vista is so differnt? Couldnt tell you since the Coding is in the category of (If you see it Microsoft will kill you.) But, from what I see with Vista it almost looks like a Steriod induced XP SP3. Everything else is pretty much the same from what I see in the registry.
Drivers shouldnt be that much of an issue unless Microsoft is not sharing the coding that needs to be shared. This is why Linux doesnt have driver issues as the core is shared amongst the community.
I know Microsoft needs to make money but lets get real. In order to get good drivers so you dont get so many issues, crashes, BSOD's, and so forth; share a little more coding than you already are (Microsoft). This is really obvious with the gaming community with SLI, Nvidia 80 Series, and DX10. Nothing plays well.
I spent 5k on my system in anticipation for Vista and BioShock in DX10 runs at 10 FPS. This is sad! I run it in DX9 in Vista I get 60FPS and in XP 90 FPS with max settings.
I just hope that SP1 addresses these issues. From what I see it looks like it does since it mentions DX 10.1.Maybe after 8 months of gamers geting frusterated and complaining in god knows how many forums they have found the problem.
Seeing Nvidias history with drivers I find it hard to believe that after 8 months they are having driver issues.
Dont get me wrong I am not bagging on Vista or Microsoft. Lets just get it right so I am happy with my gaming rig, my customers are happy, and my end users are happy. If they are happy I am happy as I no longer have a headache.
Please tell me these issues are being addressed!
Please Nick (and MS Vista team), in the SP2 (or even SP1 if possible):
1. Include the Internet Explorer program on the Desktop by default. Ordinary folk like that alot in XP;
2. Include the "Up Folder Level" button. It's a nuisance having to use other ways to work around folders;
Cheers
Andrew from Adelaide in Australia
There seems to be a widespread issue of windows 'hanging-up' during shut down or restart on the 'shutting down' screen. The indicator will be spinning, but it can remain on that screen for hours and require a manual shutdown. Is this issue addressed in SP1?
Back in October, I purchased a new desktop and received the free Vista Premium upgrade through the mail-in rebate offer. I've held off upgrading my machine just for the simple fact that I kept hearing about others who had been having problems with Vista.
I'm wondering if SP1 is going to fix all of the problems associated with Vista. I mean, I like the premise of Vista and it looks decent enough, but I've been holding off because of reported problems by other users.
I would definitely like to see Microsoft fix the problem with Internet Explorer 7 because it seems to keep crashing on me with I have more than a few tabs open and I've resorted to using Firefox and Oopera as backup browsers.
problem with divx is with all kind of movie formats (divx, xvid, wmv, h264 ...).
i get error "invalid floating point operation" on all movie players used DirectShow filters. It looks like problem with new DirectX 10.1 from SP1. When i use players like VLC its play without problems. I thinked is something wrong with computer, but when i instaled SP1 on my second pc i get the same problem. Please note that all my pc's are have amd cpu and ati gpu.
i havent checked this with intel/nvidia configuration yet.
Please tell us that SP1 resolves issues with NVIDIA drivers!
Based on the premise that NVIDIA was the developing thier hardware specifically for Vista, I figured I would avoid many of the "New OS Blues" by building a scratch system based on NVIDIA tech.
It has an Intel 6600 2.4 Ghz Dual Core CPU, NVIDIA 680 SLI chipset, 4GB DDR2, and an Nvidia 8800 GTS SLI Video card, so it has a great performance index of 5.8!
Problem is I keep having video(Nvidia in general?) related system freezes and slowdowns (Especially when running Windows DreamScene!) PLEASE tell us you have fixed these issues...I would really like to use things like DreamScene without having to constantly restart DreamScene ... (Or have Explorer crash..)
It is good news that Microsoft is planning to release SP1 for Vista.
I think they will also address the sound disappearing problem vista is having and the compatibility issue with SoundMax (Only 3 speakers working while other 2 idling when trying to use 5.1 speaker mode).
Since these are distracting the Vista user experience.

I have discovered an issue with Microsoft's TMM, you can read about it here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=153286
I was hoping SP 1 could address it.
Thanks,
Peter
It should also be noted that TMM causes DreamScene to crash for some users.
Hello Nick
I love Vista its a great OS.The only thing that
dosent funktion properly is the systemclock. Its
allways slow(even after internet synchronisation) ans never shows the accurate time.
The BIOS shows the accurate time.I read in several
forums , that other users have the same problem.
Hope Microsoft will fix this.
I have the same problem as Matti. This is caused by an explorer.exe bug that causes it to crash when the user is using x86 programs. Will this be addressed in the service pack.
My taskbar clock lags, stops and explore crashes 2 -3 times a day. only way to fix it is to shut down the explorer.exe process in task manager and then restart. I have contacted vista support several times about this but they do not respond to my emails. See no evil hear no evil i guess.
Andy
Hey, guys and gals with the Clock problem and IE crashing..( only way to fix it is to shut down the explorer.exe process in task manager and then restart).- My IE crashes [ - maybe 2 or 3 a week] are auto fixed. do you have all the required updates? and those with Video Problems - stop using BETA Drivers...I have NVidia and every Video problem stopped as soon as I stopped using the BETA Drivers..(did you forget what BETA means!)
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder consumes a lot of memory, I hope this issue will get resolved with Vista SP1.
Also, Vista doesn't support A2DP Bluetooth profile which causes a lot of trouble. To enjoy wireless audio over bluetooth, one has to install new bluetooth hardware which comes with special device driver and has special capability and special software to connect to devices supporting A2DP. I have Bluetooth built-in my TX1000 laptop with Vista Home Premium installed and I'm not happy with the idea of using a bluetooth dongal to enjoy wireless audio.
I couldn't find anything related to Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and Bluetooth and Bluetooth in Vista Service Pack Beta 1 whitepaper.
If Vista can support other Bluetooth profiles out-of-box, why not A2DP? A2DP has been around for quite too long, is a widely known standard and I am more than shocked to see Microsoft not properly supporting latest in hardware and standards.
Please resolve these two issues in Vista SP1 (can't wait till SP 2 is released.)
Thanks.
Will someone email me when the download for vista sp1 is available. Thanks Chuck
my email is chuck2bee2005@hotmail.com or chuck2bee2005@yahoo.com for vista sp1 downloads.
