Yeah, right ! the 11th and 12th time, you have to call MS 1-800 number to activate the code and from 13th time, you have to pay a subscription fee of $8.99/month for support :)

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha :)

Umm. Microsoft getting it all wrong again. Looks spectacularly bad. Really really terrible. Why don't they just learn a lesson from Apple?

  8. Posted by: Anonymous on October 31, 2006 at 9:30AM

pffft... I'm an apple fanboy myself, but the packaging's not too bad. I'm also a designer, fwiw...

Way to go Microsoft! I've always been a Microsoft fan, just thank you thank you for making Vista new and different and nicer looking.

  10. Posted by: Anonymous on October 31, 2006 at 10:56AM

Very, very nice. I love it.

With a name like Bill, it's not surprising that you're a Microsoft fanboy/lackey. I know that Vista will offer some improvements over XP, but I think you may be disappointed that the changes are mostly aesthetic. Unlike OS X and Linux that become more efficient and slick with every release (making many old machines faster), Vista will kill many innocent little PC's (even those with those terribly misleading "Vista Ready" stickers).

As for security, it will still be the worst in its field.  Essentially, Microsoft is stealing business from McAfee etc., and calling their own built-in anti-virus a added feature.  Very clever!

With Mac OS X, the first major updates to a newly-release OS come within weeks of initial release.  One can only wish that the same were true for Windows.  SP1 for Vista should be out in May...er...June...er...July...er...2008!

Oh, and since this is a post commenting on the box covers, allow me to give my opinion.  I think they are really quite attractive.  For some reason, they remind me of the new iPod nano packaging.  The design is quite nice, but It sure would be nice if both companies would employ some sort of bio-degradable "plastic"  packaging.  I'm not a tree hugger, but I see no use in dumping more crap than necessary into the ground.

  12. Posted by: Anonymous on October 31, 2006 at 2:15PM

Hey the new windows vista boxe's, look nice and cool.

  13. Posted by: Anonymous on October 31, 2006 at 2:20PM

    hi ,

Brilliant design for the dvd to sit in i am going to buy a couple just for the box... Wonder if it will catch on?

  14. Posted by: Anonymous on October 31, 2006 at 7:47PM

Why doesn't windows understand that, although red green blue and yellow are standard basic colors, they just don't mesh together on a design point of view? Go with something more monochromatic for the logo...

  15. Posted by: Anonymous on October 31, 2006 at 9:12PM

Colors are bright. Like them. Hope the OS is as good.

  16. Posted by: Sonicdh on November 01, 2006 at 12:23AM

    wow. i want that box.

  17. Posted by: Anonymous on November 01, 2006 at 5:46AM

Great packaging, but i hope that what umai v said is not true.

  18. Posted by: Anonymous on November 01, 2006 at 5:58AM

    @Jonathan V,

This is about the box... so there really is no need to go rambling on about how Linux/Mac OS is better because of XYZ...

Love the box myself, makes me re-think if I should purchase a retail or OEM.

  19. Posted by: Anonymous on November 01, 2006 at 6:45AM

Microsoft ! Way to GO !

  20. Posted by: Anonymous on November 01, 2006 at 8:54AM

Viendo que no voy a poder decidir lo que tiene mi pc, tampoco lo que se instale en el, y ademas pagar por eso.... me quedo con XP o me cambio a linux....

  21. Posted by: Anonymous on November 01, 2006 at 10:06AM

    Extreme props for the design.

  22. Posted by: Anonymous on November 01, 2006 at 11:40AM

wow, thats an amazing packaging case. i want to see it live, hopefully soon.

  23. Posted by: Anonymous on November 01, 2006 at 4:17PM

well i'm sure not a MS fanboy.. but what's that 'don't use plastic ..environment),tree's blablabla

when Apple came out with the new packaging for ipod nano's nobody say a thing about it.. BUT when MS finaly after age's comes with a pritty dissent design.. you just have to find something to trough trash with... pritty lame..

if your such a environment/tree friend you should move out of usa.. KIOTO anyone..

  27. Posted by: Anonymous on November 01, 2006 at 9:44PM

I only wish that Win Vista be on the market ASAP... I have to try a non Beta edition... 3-D views on it's interface? Whoa!!! What's next Minority Report---Possible Criminal Data Base interface??? Cool... I would like to see some 3-D icons on a next operating system version...

  28. Posted by: Anonymous on November 02, 2006 at 8:39AM

    yes this is similar!

  29. Posted by: Anonymous on November 02, 2006 at 12:07PM

If most of the comments are from apple users why are  they so against MS i think MS  has hit home this time well done

  30. Posted by: Anonymous on November 02, 2006 at 3:27PM

Классная упаковка, как и все остальные коробки для Vista

  31. Posted by: Anonymous on November 02, 2006 at 9:54PM

I'm for the environmental packaging idea.  It's not only about today but for all tomorrows.

Besides, these days being environmentally friendly is cool.

  32. Posted by: Anonymous on November 02, 2006 at 11:53PM

I am extremely exicted about the new Windows Vista operating system to come out...And the box just adds to the appeal!

  33. Posted by: Anonymous on November 03, 2006 at 4:37AM

I rather enjoy reading some of the comments posted here. I'm still waiting for someone to suggest Microsoft should give it away free like (some) Linux distros lol.

Microsoft on updates? I cant think of any major software house that actually produces updeates as quickly as microsoft. Apple on the otherhand takes forever to release any security updates and leaves OSX wide open!

The service pack isnt quite the same as it was in NT4. In NT4 it was a regular thing, but then we didnt have windows update to patch the OS.

The box looks great as does Vista itself! PERIOD

  34. Posted by: Anonymous on November 03, 2006 at 10:31AM

I like it, i like it a lot...!

I think the finally learnt something of apple's max os x package!

Finally I like it to have a pc :D

  35. Posted by: Anonymous on November 03, 2006 at 7:47PM

ok,i like this black one. it is ultimate edition

  36. Posted by: Anonymous on November 03, 2006 at 10:35PM

Linux is better anyway! Especially the last version of Ubuntu!

  37. Posted by: Anonymous on November 04, 2006 at 9:21AM

I have been a mac user for quite some time now and have been testing vista. I think MS has done a great job. apple fans learn to accept and appreciate good work.

    GOOD JOB MS VISTA TEAM.

  45. Posted by: GCRaya on November 06, 2006 at 10:27PM

I think this is my favorite color of the vista package campaign.

Do you know who did the package design? Its awesome.

  46. Posted by: Anonymous on November 07, 2006 at 1:29AM

I think the box looks great!  I most likely will end up getting Vista, and then having to call to activate it, and repeat the groups of numbers a billion times, b/c the IVR can never fix it.  Which is really a pain in the ***! Especially for us that actually buy the software and doesn't go and download it off the net, and then mod it so it doesnt have the activation.  This is just making us that pay want to do it illegally!!!  And that is RANT!

  47. Posted by: Anonymous on November 07, 2006 at 5:24AM

Windows Vista is for rich and not for boor.

  48. Posted by: Anonymous on November 07, 2006 at 5:25AM

    Sorry I mean poor

  49. Posted by: Anonymous on November 07, 2006 at 7:39AM

It cracks me up that Vista has almost got the Microsoft Office for Mac package...  'cause the pretty box is practically the ONLY way to get Mac users to buy Microsoft products, I guess.

The guy who said Apple is slow on updating bugs obviously has NEVER used OS X.  On the contrary, Apple fixes stuff before it ever becomes public!  I just wish my PC had half the features of OS X... and with Vista, it looks like it might!  If Vista falls short, I WILL go Apple...

  50. Posted by: Anonymous on November 07, 2006 at 7:46AM

    Fred-

I hate to break it to you, but Mac users will never 'get it'.  They pay SO MUCH for hardware and software.  Sure, the machines are very nice and all, but I can pick up a PC at Wal-Mart for $300!  I'd rather stay cheap and run XP or Vista on passable hardware than buy a really nice machine like a Mac.  Besides, Apple won't be #1 rated for customer service forever...

  51. Posted by: List244 on November 07, 2006 at 11:06AM

    Jonathan V,

You seem to have an odd point of view. Most of us would rather not have updates. Updates in the first week means there were problems, or they just pushed the product before finishing. I for one hope not to see SP1, ever. Though, of course, they are already planning it with 64 bit to re-enable some kernel hooking, something I think they should, well not do.

At any rate, it is easy to provide massive updates in Linux, it is already so lacking. Linux is nowhere near ready to compete. Also, I have tried Vista, and it is a LOT more than cosmetics. Vista is the only operating system so far to run my computer flawlessly. Both XP and Linux crash my computer, Vista has NEVER done this. I will be purchasing Windows Vista, and not for the box.

    PS: Very nice box.

  52. Posted by: Anonymous on November 07, 2006 at 11:43AM

Nice box designs. New OS, new packaging.  It makes sense to me.

  53. Posted by: Anonymous on November 07, 2006 at 1:31PM

I had been patiently waiting for this release FOREVER.  Being in the market for a new PC, I just happened to stumble into the Apple store.  After using OS X and being able to run XP and Vista (whenever it comes out officially) side-by-side with OS X, I bought the Mac.  I'll still buy Vista when it comes out, but somehow I feel as if I don't really need it now.  If Microsoft had've released Vista sooner, I would have bought a PC for sure!  Oh well.  You snooze, you loose.

  54. Posted by: Anonymous on November 07, 2006 at 9:12PM

    Excellent hats off for vista

  55. Posted by: Anonymous on November 08, 2006 at 2:17AM

    Jagshemash!

    Wawavewa!

    It is niiiice!

    Box is niiiiice!

But Windows like old prostitute under clothes, and will hang like vagine of old moose!

    Borat

  56. Posted by: Anonymous on November 08, 2006 at 10:58AM

    It's gorgeus!!!

I love the shape of the box, the rounded corners!... It's very beautiful... a nice chance for Microsoft.

  57. Posted by: Anonymous on November 08, 2006 at 3:27PM

Linux folks, if you shit is so much better, ya isn't everyone using it. Seems to me MS finally got it right. Start cuting back on your beer bongs, and save up boys.Ultimate is not cheap.

  64. Posted by: Anonymous on November 09, 2006 at 8:54AM

    Box design is really nice.

After using the RC2 release i have made up my mind. I'm definetely gonna purchase Vista and it will be the first time i'll be using legally OS Software.

Way to go team, good job.

  65. Posted by: Billabong on November 09, 2006 at 12:50PM

Oh Yah Thats the sweet stuff hahahaha j/k but good work all Looks good

  66. Posted by: Anonymous on November 09, 2006 at 1:48PM

I'm sure the designers of the box were poking their eyes out when adding the Windows logo to their work. It's not bad. The logo on the front seems out of place but the one on the side looks fine.

  67. Posted by: Anonymous on November 09, 2006 at 2:49PM

    nice box..Micro$oft.

I did try the RC1 version of Vista. Well...I ain't got the money to buy the Ultimate for $400 ! Its nuts ! I'll just grab a copy from my favorite and most amazing place.. "BitTorrent".

    Heheheheheh !

  68. Posted by: Anonymous on November 10, 2006 at 1:07AM

yeah i luv the new theme there integrating in everything. the box is dead sexy, better than apples tiger box >;)

Have you seen screenshots of the latest Linux desktops? If not, visit www.beryl-project.org. This stuff makes Vista look like Windows NT! (And yes I know what NT looks like, I use a cracked copy of it on one of my junk computers. Hope nobody minds. :-P)

I've seen Vista. It can't update a boot record, the Flip 3D looks HIDEOUS, and Beryl runs twice as fast as Aero anyway. Even my laptop, which has an i845 graphics chipset with 8MB of shared graphics RAM, can run Compiz, the less graphics-intense sister of Beryl.

As for your reliability issue, try Ubuntu 6.10. I switched to Ubuntu from XP Pro on my laptop and everything works great, including ACPI which I was convinced would not work except in Windows.

You think I'm being nasty here? Check out http://blogs.fuhrykitchentable.no-ip.org/danfuhry/2006/07/03/windows-vistaultimate/ - that's where I go whenever I have to let off some steam :-P

Laptop's overall need good drivers even if we are using Linux/Vista/OSX. Desktops get everything.

It's not Vista perse which will kill linux but the DRM and the other shit that is involved with this like HDCP and HDMI, if y ou will no longer be able to play movie files on Linux ie tv shows..or record them with mythtv on an un drm'd machine then who will still use Linux...

    Please don't let this happen....
