just tried to download vist SP1. I am using a usb modem stick. Part 1 fine.part 2 fine. after restart all i got was , and i quote,

!!0xc01a001d!! 37683/91768 ( \ resistry\machine\componants\winners\x86...) for over 6 hours before i had to do a windows restore. If ANY one can help PLEASE contact me at davidblagdon@hotmail.co.uk.

I would be gratefull for ANY comments.

Something appears to have changed as Windows Update also started to show SP1 as an update for me as well, even though my SigmaTel driver has not changed recently on my 64-bit Vista Ultimate system.

Your mileage may vary, but I went ahead and took the SP1 update and, on reboot, sound no longer worked. So I deinstalled the SigmaTel software, rebooted and Windows detected the sound hardware presummably with a default "hidef sound" driver. And sound worked fine after that, so I'm considering the problem solved even though I do not have a SigmaTel-specific driver installed.

Hello everyone,

I have this strange situation that I am not sure if I should install SP1

(1) I have sigmatel sound driver

Driver Date: 1/12/2007

Driver Version: 6.10.0.5343

stwrt.sys (c:\windows\system32)

6.10.5343.1 nd544 cp 1 built by: WinDDK

(2) I have seen many older web page that refer

to "stwrt.sys" as problematic, but the latest KB

article (KB 948343) have been updated to "stwrt.cat".

(3) I have not installed SP1 yet, but Windows Update

will appear SP1 as an option. (I have choosen to

install all updates manually, so nothing is install automatically).

(4) While "stwrt.sys" is in c:\windows\system32, "stwrt.cat" is in folder

C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\stwrt.inf_*******. But I suppose

these are not the active files in use, am I right?

If my drivers are old and problematic, how come I can still see SP1 as an option in

windows update ?

Is "stwrt.sys" or "stwrt.cat" the problem?

Should I go ahead and install SP1 ? I am concerned about losing sound and have to

reinstall drivers (which I don't know if it will succeed).

Jeffrey Browns, the "Vista" sticker has nothing to do with Windows Vista SP1 or whether SP1 can or cannot be installed on the PC due to issues list here on this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343. Not being able to install SP1 doesn't mean your PC isn't capable of running Windows Vista - or "compatible".

If your PC isn't working right, you would need to look to return your PC from the place you purchased it from.

I would also encourage you to take a look at your PC's manufacturer's website. Dell, HP and other OEM's have published updated IDT/SigmaTel drivers on their own websites. Perhaps a updated SigmaTel driver is available for you that will enable the installation of Windows Vista SP1.

I can assure you there is no deceit (or lies) on our part about the reasons why SP1 might not be able to be installed on the Windows Vista PC. Those reasons are fully listed here on this KB (as mentioned above) http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343 and have been there since day 1. We definitely want people to be able to install SP1 and are looking to remove the blockers in place that might be preventing the installation of SP1 due to the issues listed in the KB.

My computer has a "Vista" sticker on it, but includes the sigma sound that is problematic.

Who do I return this computer to to get it working with SP1 since that's what is on my computer or are you saying that Microsoft lied to me and my machine is not 100% compatible? SP1 is indeed part of being Vista-capable. This isn't a new OS, this is Vista not working on my computer that was sold to me with Vista on it).

Brandon, you are not an honorable person in the way to are dealing with this. You and your company deceived me and many others and I want my money back or a computer that works as promised.

Telling me I can't update to even fix the broken RTM version because Microsoft can't seem to support any of the major soundcards is ludicrous. It's deceit and lies.

Watch out for Vista SP1. It can nuke your Internet connections - just like some of the previous bloggers mentioned. It nuked mine today. The service pack took an hour to install and then it failed and had to uninstall but that resulted in nuked internet connections. Uninstalling the service pack did not work either. I logged on to the internet through my trusty XP laptop and found this blog where one of the users indicated they had experienced a similar problem and not even system restore was able to bring their system back. Well I figured I should at least try system restore. Lo and behold - it worked for me - but its going to be a very long time before I try to put on Service Pack 1 again. I write code for a living - not pc code, but code just the same - no one should put out s product that can't roll itself back automatically when it gets an error installing. Especially with all the money that Microsoft makes. It's insane. If the install needs updated drivers then it should go and get the required drivers from the OEM website for the customers. Not everyone is a techno-geek - this software shoudl be bullet proof, not full of holes.

Brandon - thanks for the update. I'm also tracking the SigmaTel issue and it is helpful to just know that this is still being worked as I'd like to update to SP1.

One question I do have is that there was, as you probably know, a short period of time months ago when a SigmgTel update did appear on Windows Update which updated the SigmaTel drivers beyond the date you specified. I updated to this but it didn't appear to fix the problem. I heard a rumor that this driver was later pulled from Windows Update. Should I remove this driver and put back the one I originally had so that when the real fix appears on Windows update I'll get it.

Note that I'm running the 64-bit version of Vista.

RandyB. - we try to answer as many comments as we can. We respond quite a bit to comments here. And no, I'm not embarassed. When questions are asked and I don't have the best answers - I won't respond. Sorry.

Regarding the issue with SigmaTel/IDT drivers blocking the installation of Windows Vista SP1 - we continue to upload this KB with information when it becomes available:

But I will copy the list of problematic IDT/SigmaTel drivers here:

• For x86-based computers: Stwrt.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

• For x64-based computers: Stwrt64.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

Exceptions for IDT/SigmaTel drivers were made on certain models of Dell, HP, and Sony computers because these drivers were updated to address this issue before the 12/17/07 publish date.

Pretty much if your driver has a publish date of after 12/17/07 you should be able to install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update. If your IDT/SigmaTel driver is published after 12/17/07 and you still cannot install Windows Vista SP1 - then please check the above mentioned KB for other possible reasons as to why Windows Vista SP1 isn't installing.

Dell, HP and other OEM's have published updated IDT/SigmaTel drivers on their own websites. I encourage folks to check with their PC manufacturer for new IDT/SigmaTel drivers.

You can also try installing the standalone version of Windows Vista SP1 as well:

I also have the SigmaTel driver problem because of which I'm not being offered SP1 through Windows Update.

I've been waiting for ages and ages hoping Microsoft would rectify the problem. But apart from several unkept promises, nothing has happened.

Brandon, that was May 27th. It's now August 4th. Reading other posts, you've made these same promises over and over again and have responded to almost none of them after promising to respond. It's been over a month. Are you not embarassed by your words and lack of actions in your own blog? Your "update very soon" promises are simply fluff to delay getting us answers.

Please, just stop telling us you'll be getting back with us soon. You are obviously not getting back to us "very soon" with anything.

Hello

I have some comments to Windows Vista SP1, which is a major shortcoming.

Vista new ui "Auro" goes black when it is enlarged. Why does it do this?

When will the "Windows Movie Maker" app be improved?, This program is lagging behind compared to Apples ilife Imovie.

If these things could be rectified, it would be optimal.

Otherwise, I am very satisfied with Windows Vista, which really is great and runs very much stable than previous Windows versions.
