Hey Parm and polarbear69: the difference in price is due to a difference in spec, so it's important to compare like with like. In this case, the software configuration on the two Dell PCs in question is different - namely, the inclusion of Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED and a different version of Office.

It's important to note that there is no premium charged for the purchase of a (PRODUCT) RED PC. Identically-equipped PCs would cost the same.

engadget.com had the same comment, Parm. The side-by-side comparison only shows about $150 - $200 difference in specs, but a $300 price difference. With $80 of each purchase going to AIDS research, why are 'concerned' buyers getting ripped for the additional $20 - $50? Especially when the (PRODUCT) line is supposed to send the donation with nothing extra tacked onto the device purchase.

Is there any particular reason why a (RED) XPS One costs some $300 more than a non-RED equivalent?

I thought the "no extra cost to you" description would mean that we wouldn't be funding the donations ourselves?

I guess I need to simplify my response.. Good work Dell and Microsoft, I hope that this initiative towards a worthy cause is successful and that it can help people affected with Aids and inspire other companies to act to. Hopefully with more Basic Reasearch combined with these efforts Aids will soon become an easily controlled or cured disease!

Keep up the good work.

Oh and as for Cancer heres a scary stat from the NIH

1:2 US men will get it in their lifetime and 1:3 women US women will get it. Pretty scary.

I'm all for the finding a cure for AIDs and helping people out... but why is all the funding going over to Africa? Why is it that I never see something about a company like that helping people here in the US?

I will say this though, it was a very bright move on their part to partner with the two largest companies dealing with computers around. Only thing they could do that would raise more money is get with AMD that way when people buy a Dell, with Vista, using an AMD processor, they could get a little more for AIDs funding for finding a cure.

Sorry about the long rant...
