For RAW image support in Windows

re: Understanding RAW Image Support in Windows Vista

It is my understanding that the problem with Vista and RAW files is that Vista interprets RAW file metadata as a virus and deletes it quicker than you can say Nikon. Since hearing this I have gone to Canon and found downloads that apparently address, and hopefully corrects, this issue. I tried to download this into my Win XP Media Center laptop, in advance of transferring Lightroom and PSCS2 into a new Vista desktop, and was not allowed to do so. I was advised that this patch would only work with Vista. So now there might be hope, and a solution, for us Canon guys at the Canon web site. Cannot confirm this potentially great news but for those of you who use Vista and Canon and RAW files, head there and... good luck. If any of you RAW shooters have any more recent info regrding this huge problem please post it. Thanks.

Not to sound like a jerk but perhaps you should try reading this post as it talks about the supports RAW image formats and how to make them work with Vista. I've gotten my Nikon RAW images to work extremely well in Vista and without any trouble at all.

Adobe needs to essentially work with Olympus to provide support for their RAW files or Olympus needs to perhaps write a add-on of some kind for Photoshop to see and edit those RAW files. Microsoft has no say in what file formats Adobe supports in Photoshop.

I have a question for you, I have a olympus evolt 500 and when I downloaded the software I also downloaded the codecs for oltmpus raw for vista. However I just aquired photoshop cs2 but I can't open the raw files with that, just my olympus software. What do I need to do to fix this problem? When I view the thumbnails it shows the raw images as orf files but won't or can't open them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

I made mention of this back when I met you during the Bus tour and have since had troubles with the Nikon codecs myself. Thanks for sharing the info on the Microsoft Photography Blog, seem the team and Nikon are already working on a fix for the .NEF image loss.

PS. I haven't forgot about the Parental Controls stuff. I hope you received my email a few weeks back.
