Hey CoCo: technical support for Windows Vista dn Ultimate Extras is best sought at the public Windows Vista newsgroups, where there are tons of experts with the ability to help you out. (Sounds like you may need to re-attempt the download.)

With respect to application compatibiity, some devices will require a newer driver version for use with Windows Vista, so it's a good idea to check for those from the manufacturer's site. If/when the manufacturer makes new drivers available to us, we'll have them on Windows Update. Another thing, Vista Ultimate won't Slide Show any of my pix except in Media Center. I would like to use them as a screen saver. All I get is an error box.

I tried to download Texas Hold'em for my Vista Ultimate and it failed after 93% downloaded. Any ideas? So far it is a very disappointing OS for software. I just purchased a scanner, Fujitsu ScanSnap, which has Adobe Acrobat 7 and other software which won't run even in Compatablity Mode and 2 Samsung DVD drives which cannot run the OEM (Nero)software on it, without PURCHASING an upgrade. Thank goodness I have a dual boot system and still have my XP to run all of my other 50 programs and not have any down time. I do like the look and the ease of use Office 2007, however looks don't get the job done!!!!! You need better ompatablity with old programs.

Hey Ultimate_Disappointment: It sounds like this is your first month with Windows Vista, and because there is a learning curve and many discoveries still to be made, I'd ask that you please keep at it. I think in the end you'll see your disappointment turn into appreciation.

One suggestion is that you look at the Application Compatibility Toolkit (see the entry at http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2007/02/20/free-downloads-to-deploy-and-manage-windows-vista.aspx). Or, if it is an old program you're experiencing issues with, you might try right-clicking, selecting Properties and clicking the Compatibility tab. This allows you to run a program in the Compatibility Mode for many older versions of Windows, even up to Win95.

Also, relating programs to file extensions is pretty easy -- it's done by right-clicking the file, selecting "Run as...", and then selecting the program. You can make life easier in future by selecting "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file." It may not be the exact same interface as XP, but nor is it any more difficult.

I was sure Microsoft had done all they could to make Vista the best and most comprehensive and compatible OS ever, but after spending well over $2000.00 for a super PC and Windows Vista Ultimate Signature Edition, I'm truly disappointed (hence the user name).

Powertoys should have been all built in, I miss the "image re-sizer", "command prompt here" and TweakUI toys desperately.

SW/HW Compatibility issues are very distressing as well. My 6 month old Nikon Coolpix P3 is completely useless with Vista. (That's just ONE example!)

Also, what happened to being able to add buttons to Explorer windows??? Why can't I have a Refresh, Delete, Copy, Cut, Paste, etc. buttons on the now non-existent bar?

Finally, why is it now even MORE difficult to relate default programs to file extensions?

I like the search in the start menu. Kudos on the one enhancement. :P

Sorry Nick but it's just plain nuts with Wsus. We have many customers with SBS R2 which have Wsus installed by default, you are telling me we have to install what is in effect a Beta program to download the extras! I really think MS should rethink their policy, customers have paid for the Ultimate product and are being denied it by MS.

Hey Pepper: Extras are currently not released through WSUS, although we are considering that in the future. WSUS is for anyone (mostly enterprises) who want to manage their own WU (Windows Update) updates. Note that WSUS manages updates across the entire network of machines, including those running Ultimate. So, if Enterprise A deploys Ultimate and WSUS, user today would not get Extras on their Ultimate machines *unless* WSUS 3.0 is deployed. In this case, WSUS 3.0 by policy allows admins to allow users to hit the Extras servers, bypassing WSUS. Thus users can technically get Extras on their Ultimate machines.

The problem in a corporate small business environment is we no longer have a choice to go to microsoft for windows updates if we have WSUS deployed. It now FORCES you to only go thru WSUS. This in turn now eliminates the ability to get the ultimate extras for my test laptop or makes it so we can't take advantage of WSUS.

So now what do we do now that microsoft has changed the rules.

Nick, what you just said above contradicts what the WSUS group is doing, as they have "Windows Ultimate Extras" as one of the product items that WSUS supports. I've found blog entries where they talk about this and how excited we should be that WSUS will bring the extras to our corporate environments. Was the intended policy for WSUS changed at some point?

Hey nicholasr347, Pepper, tserreyn, et al: Ultimate Extras will be delivered thru the Extras pipeline only -- we don’t deliver them thru any other pipeline. If you are able to get Windows Update to run by connecting to MS and downloading the updates, then you should be in good shape. You might try connecting your machine running Ultimate directly to the internet to get the Extras.

Any news on getting the ultimate extras on WSUS? Used upgrade anytime to the ultimate edition in part to get them only to find out I don't get them in my WSUS environment, and I can't download them directly anymore.

OR failing getting them on WSUS, how about a way to download directly if you have purchased them. (bypass WSUS like it worked in XP?)
