"Emailed Microsoft Australia about upgrading from Business to Ultimate and informed I would need to buy the Upgrade Version of Ultimate RRP $A495. Now if Anytime Upgrade was available in Australia I would pay approx $A195-215. Yeah looks like a fair deal to me. Because I live in Australia I would have to, if I was inclined to be ripped off, pay an extra $A300. I would like to know what Microsoft has been smoking to think people would be stupid enough to accept this."

Guess what. Windows Anytime Upgrade still isnt available to Australians. The microsoft rep gives me this answer still "66R-00021 Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade Edition AUD495.00 (RRP)" just purchase that. Sorry but there is no valid excuse why this isnt available to residents of Australia.

WAU may be available in Israel, but I'm unable to read the local Israeli site to determine whether this is the case or not; perhaps you can determine that by visiting the site yourself: http://www.microsoft.com/israel/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/windowsanytimeupgrade/default.mspx.

I hope this helps.

I'm running XP Pro. The upgrade to Vista Business is $192.

If I then decide I want to Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate it costs $139 to go from Business to Ultimate. Total trip from XP Pro to Ultimate = $331.

If instead, I just bite the bullet now and upgrade from XP Pro directly to Vista Ultimate it costs $225.

Why does the stopover at Business incure a $106 penalty?

Looking from your point I can see you are trying to encourage me to go to Ultimate right from the start.

Looking from my point, once I've upgraded to any Vista flavor I'm unlikely to use Anytime Upgrade since it seems to be priced at least $100 more than making the correct choice to start with.

The HB to HP @ $79 is only a $20 penalty so that doesn't seem too outrageous since the diference between HB and HP upgrades is $56.

The difference between originally purchasing upgrades to Business or Ultimate is only $33. Why should an Anytime Upgrade from B to U cost $139?

re: Multiple announcements today

Windows Vista pricing is on par with every operating system Microsoft has EVER released. There are simply more versions available now than ever. The family discount does offer significant savings towards upgrading multiple machines to Vista. This discount was previously never available before, allowing you to now own 3 licenses for windows at the price of what it used to cost to own lesser products in the past.

You can buy Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade for $259.99 and then buy two Vista Home Premium Upgrade licenses for $49.99 each. That comes to $359.97 to upgrade 3 machines to vista. XP Media Center edition would cost the same as ultimate if ever released in retail, and there was no mid version of XP (between home and pro) but even assuming it was JUST home you were getting, you are still getting 2 for the cost of 1. A similar upgrade in XP would have cost quite a bit more without any available discount(XP Media Center Upgrade $250 XP Home Premium $150 + XP Home Premium $150 = $550).

If you doubt any of this, please review the little comparison chart I made below.

I was very happy to see that Microsoft finally offered some sort of discount to those who are loyal customers.

Windows XP Home Upgrade ($99.99) = Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade ($99.99)

Windows XP Home Full Version ($199.99) = Windows Vista Home Basic Full Version ($199.99)

Windows XP Pro Upgrade ($199.99) = Windows Vista Business Upgrade ($199.99)

Windows XP Pro Full Version ($299.99) = Windows Vista Business Full Version ($299.99)

No Windows XP Equivalent (somewhere between home and pro)= Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade ($159.99)

No Windows XP Equivalent (somewhere between home and pro) = Windows Vista Home Premium Full Version ($239.99)

Windows XP Media Center Edition Upgrade(Never available) = Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade ($259.99)

Windows XP Media Center Edition Full Version (Never availble except in retail, OEM ONLY) = Windows Vista Ultimate Full Version ($399.99)

re: Multiple announcements today

Hey pep: sorry for your disappointment. The Family Offer site indicates that only the retail upgrade and full versions are eligible for the offer -- other versions are not: ttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/familydiscount.mspx.

The login fuction for XP access to WV files is part of UAC's protection measures.

I feel a bit stiffed by Microsoft. I got a free copy of Vista Business. I wouldn't complain if that wouldn't work with the plan. However, I spent the extra money and did the online upgrade to Ultimate. I thought I then had a full version of Ultimate. I really don't. I would have been better off just buying a retail Ultimate upgrade. It seems my Ultimate copy has no published key and won't work for the Family Discount program. I should have saved the money. It will cost me more to upgrade two additional machines to Home Premium than if I had bought a retail Ultimate Upgrade plus the two Home Premium upgrades. This stinks. Nowhere did Microsoft say that by spending the $100+ ($139?) for the Ultimate Upgrade that I would be a second class citizen in their eyes. I would just leave the machines on XP Pro except the network interoperability between VIsta and XP is so poor. Even after the patch on XP so Vista can see the XP machines I have trouble with XP wanting a login to access Public files on Vista. I have spent way too much time on this and I am ready t just bail and upgrade the other machines but not at the outrageous prices for retail. THe Family Discount look nice. Too bad I wasted the $138 upgradign to Ultimate through Microsoft.

re: Multiple announcements today

This is why Vista will NOT do as well as XP. So far it hasn't come close in sales. AS someone stated above the an operating system costing more than the computer itself is just plain stupid. BUT leave it to RIPOFFSOFT to do it again.

I ran both Betas the program is horrible. The Price is worse. I look at this way... I don't care how long it took or how much money Gates spent "developing" Vista. NOT MY PROBLEM. You want people to stop "ripping" off your software then start selling it at a fairer price.

So far ALL the Windows software from 95 till present have been filled with flaws, leaks and as far as I'm concerned very bloated prices.

Suck it up Bill..either p oop or get off the pot.

I just think it's funny how Vista has barely sold about 1/3 as many copies of Vista as it did XP. Greed... in the end it'll kill you everytime.

Not to mention that even if it was worth the money most main stream people couldn't afford it. I build PC's for people and I have and will continue to tell them to avoid Vista like it's the worse disease you could ever get. Until the price drops a ton it'll never be worth it. Even Norton's [Symantec} is starting to realize the relationship of Price and Sales...

When Microsoft says clean install, they mean it wipes out the previous (Win XP Pro in my case) version, correct?

They do not mean you install if from a cleanly formatted disk, correct?

It's confusing because most people define clean install as the latter.

Thanks
