re: Audio Innovations in Windows Vista

Hi Nathan - you are correct, the "Enhancements" shown above are dependent upon having HD Audio Hardware (that is designed to work with these effects) in your Windows Vista machine.

Our new inbox audio class driver does 'justs work' with a large percentage of the integrated audio hardware that is already in the market, but unfortunately, many systems that were shipping before Windows Vista launch still require custom XP-specific audio drivers that are provided by the OEMs who built your hardware.

Many of these custom drivers depend upon configuration data that is written (incorrectly in some cases) into the BIOS, so occasionally, a BIOS upgrade will be required for older audio hardware to work correctly with our inbox audio class driver.

This BIOS data essesntially tells the OS how the audio jacks are wired on the motherboard.

Unfortunately, in some cases, the only way older audio hardware will work correctly is if you find and use the original XP driver from your OEM or system vendor. Fortunately, this is a relatively small percentage of the audio hardware out there.

FWIW, there are literally tens of thousands of "custom" audio drivers who are each 'wired' slightly differently for each motherboard that has been shippped in the past.

For Windows Vista, this is one reason we've invested in a new inbox class driver and driver model -- this investment only really helps "next time" that is, in our next release, it will be much easier to upgrade your 'old' hardware and it will not require searching for a custom driver.

Of course, this does not necessarily help those clean installing over older hardware today -- if you are in the minority of users whose audio hw does not 'just work' after you clean install, you still may have to go search for your system disks or go to your OEM website to find your original audio drivers.

Hope this helps provide some context for this often misunderstood problem with the thousands and thousands of custom audio drivers that existed for XP.

-Steve
