It's Windows Vista Week at Channels 9 and 10

Windows Vista Week has begun at Channel 9 and Channel 10. Over on Channel 9 they're covering Windows Vista from the developer side, focusing on building apps for Windows Vista as a user-centric operating system. What technologies underlying Windows Vista make it what it is for the user? And what can developers get out of those technologies to improve the user's experience with their Windows apps? Channel 9 will take a deep-dive into those technologies this week. Expect topics to range from UAC to the networking stack and beyond.

Also, Channel 9's Charles Torre has posted his interview with Michael Wallent on the 'what' and 'why' of Windows Vista's developer appeal. Incidentally, I had the opportunity to interview Michael about Windows Vista product quality back in November, and he had some illuminating things to share, so I'm sure his words for devs will be equally valuable.

On Channel 10, the team will be covering a wide range of Windows Vista topics, too, in this case targeting power users (is that you?). For instance, Tina Wood works hands-on with Ernie Booth while installing Windows Vista, and Laura Foy interviews Windows Mobile's Mel Sampat (creator of FlexWallet) about getting Windows Sidebar Gadgets to run on your Windows Mobile device.

Should be an interesting week ...

Windows Mobile 6 Arrives

Microsoft at the 3GSM World Congress 2007 in Barcelona (one of my favorite cities) just announced Windows Mobile 6 for mobile devices. You can get our PressPass announcement here.

Windows Mobile 6 is the latest update to our mobile software platform. WM6 now provides updated mobile versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint that bring features previously only seen on PCs. WM6 also introduces a richer email and calendar experience, including new one-click options for email and the new calendar bar for viewing appointments. The release also ships with Windows Live for Mobile, bringing Windows Live's email, instant messaging, blogging and -- best of all -- web search, to your mobile device.

You already know that a new version of the Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) Beta has been released for Windows Vista RC1; its build number is 6.0.6526. WMDC Beta 3 enables you to setup new partnerships, synchronize content and manage music, pictures and video with any Windows Mobile 2003- or Windows Mobile 5-powered device.

The Windows Mobile Device Center Beta is currently available as a stand-alone installation here. In a few weeks it will be available through Windows Update.

Although formal support is not offered for this Beta release, you're encouraged to use newsgroups to help answer your questions. The Windows Mobile also welcome your feedback at dcinput@microsoft.com.

Windows Mobile Device Center for Windows Vista Now Available

Windows Mobile Program Manager Mel Sampat tells us that Windows Mobile Device Center (Beta 3) is finally here for Public Download for Windows Vista RC1 and higher.

Windows Mobile Device Center Beta Coming Soon

A lot of folks have been pinging us with questions regarding release of the Windows Mobile Device Center. Today I’d like to personally give you the heads-up that next week you will get your chance to download the new WMDC Beta and sync your mobile devices up with newer builds of Windows Vista.

When the Beta goes online, it will first be available only in English, with more language supported in short order. Don't worry on this last count, as language support is indeed a priority.
