Automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1 begins today

We're excited about the progress we've made with Windows Vista Service Pack 1.  On March 18th, Windows Vista SP1 was made available for customers who chose to manually download and install it from the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.  Last week, we made the remaining languages available - giving WU users the ability to download and install Windows Vista Service Pack in any of 36 supported languages.  Today, we're happy to announce that we are beginning automatic distribution of SP1 in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.

So what does this mean? Over the next few months Microsoft will automatically distribute Windows Vista SP1 to PCs that have automatic updates turned on (Learn how to turn on automatic updating) and running English, French, German, Spanish, or Japanese via Windows Update. Automatic distribution will only occur, according to user settings, on PCs ready for SP1. After Windows Vista SP1 downloads, WU will let you know that "new updates are available." You'll then be asked to make a few clicks before the installation of SP1 will begin.

While we're beginning automatic distribution today, you might not see it right away since the distribution process is very gradual.  As I called out on April 7th, we'll be distributing the service pack slowly so that we can help Windows users have a good experience.

As I posted above, we made the remaining languages of SP1 available for manual install on the Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update last week.  We'd like to let those of you running one of those languages that we'll plan to start automatic distribution of those languages sometime in mid-May.

We hope you enjoy the many improvements that have been made in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and are excited to start automatic distribution so more of you can begin experiencing the benefits.

    Hello Brandon -

Nothing that I had mentioned should be construed as either unconstructive and/or disrespectful.

    However...

I am just truly *AMAZED* that Vista SP1 could even be released, with Microsoft knowing that the SigmaTel (driver) user base is vast.

To me this is BS and I stand by this comment.

It should not be that difficult for both the driver vendor and your company to get this problem totally resolved.

At the very least, kindly provide an ETA for resolution, so people, like myself, can plan  alternative measures.

As for the Tech Media, it is already known that there are several Vista SP1 install problems.

I added my feelings to the Blogosphere and feel that everyone affected should do the same.

    Thank you.

Hmmmm... IDT, successor to SigmaTel, has workaround instruction for this issue posted on their Web site. The words they use indicate that this is not their problem, that their drivers work correctly, and they have no responsibility for this issue.

Looks like a stalemate to me, so I guess that, unless I am willing to risk taking the manual steps necessary, I'll never receive Vista SP1.

Here's the link to the IDT (Sigma Tel) blurb about the audio drivers and SP1 ... FYI Microsoft

    Just an FYI,

For fun I downloaded and installed the Windows 2008 server trial version.

Wow. What a difference. Time to logon screen is 30 seconds or less and a fully usable desktop in less than 60 seconds. SigmaTel sound worked right out of the box and continued to work after the updates. Mouse, and wireless all work with not a single issue. Copying 5 MB of files from my usb key was so fast I never even saw a progress bar - just flashed onto my desktop. Not a single blue screen or crash.

Honestly...this is the desktop we've all been asking for and addressed all of my Vista HW/performance issues I've been having. Kudos to the server team. You really knocked the ball out of the park with Server 2008. I have no idea what the problem is with Vista, but Server 2008 does indeed show that the same core services of the new Vista model really do work very well when applied correctly.

    Happy Snoopy Dance at last!

    :)

    Hi all:

I find it interesting that IDT (SigmaTel) has a possible fix on their web site for SP1!

One would think that they would communicate with Microsoft and have them post it *FIRST*, but this is not the case.

    What about the average user?

Microsoft needs to have this done via Windows Update, completely without user intervention.

Ceinach, your observation with Windows Server 2008 is interesting, but it is not practical or warranted for the desktop/laptop, which should be running Vista Client.

    Brandon/Chris, what are your thoughts?

Is the MS validated fix near?

Compumind, what IDT has posted on their site in regards to possible resolutions to installing Windows Vista SP1 with the current SigmaTel drivers does indeed work - we understand its of course not the best resolution for the average consumer. I have been told by our folks here at Microsoft that they continue to work with our partners in providing updated drivers for Windows Update for all problematic drivers.

I am hoping to have something more to say very soon so stay tuned.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

    Hi Kingsize,

Many EULA contain parts that nobody would agree to unless forced to because they are so one sided.  These terms are pretty unconscionable, in which case those specific parts of the EULA may not be completely legal in some countries.

However if you don't like Microsoft updating your machine, then you can always disable automatic updates.

Microsoft isnt the only company that occassionally has EULA issue, Apple does to:

I'ld try not to get to worked up about an EULA, does anyone read them anyway... probably only IT admins!

This article is pretty interesting to:

Don't worry guys! Just dump Vista and stick with XP for the next year! Or in other words did you forget the XP release!? I for myself NEVER buy any microsoft product/software before it was not bug-fixed for at least 2-3 years! Then after this 2-3 years you can expect to get a "ok" version even suitable for an advanced average joe! lol

    GL,

    Wahahahahah ;-)

I downloaded XP SP3 on one of my desktops and notebooks yesterday  and here it is several weeks since Vista SP1 has been released and I still am not able to get the update. As far as I know I am still waiting for the driver from Creative Labs. Makes one wonder about Vista.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) als automatisches Update
