Automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1 begins today

We're excited about the progress we've made with Windows Vista Service Pack 1.  On March 18th, Windows Vista SP1 was made available for customers who chose to manually download and install it from the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.  Last week, we made the remaining languages available - giving WU users the ability to download and install Windows Vista Service Pack in any of 36 supported languages.  Today, we're happy to announce that we are beginning automatic distribution of SP1 in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.

So what does this mean? Over the next few months Microsoft will automatically distribute Windows Vista SP1 to PCs that have automatic updates turned on (Learn how to turn on automatic updating) and running English, French, German, Spanish, or Japanese via Windows Update. Automatic distribution will only occur, according to user settings, on PCs ready for SP1. After Windows Vista SP1 downloads, WU will let you know that "new updates are available." You'll then be asked to make a few clicks before the installation of SP1 will begin.

While we're beginning automatic distribution today, you might not see it right away since the distribution process is very gradual.  As I called out on April 7th, we'll be distributing the service pack slowly so that we can help Windows users have a good experience.

As I posted above, we made the remaining languages of SP1 available for manual install on the Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update last week.  We'd like to let those of you running one of those languages that we'll plan to start automatic distribution of those languages sometime in mid-May.

We hope you enjoy the many improvements that have been made in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and are excited to start automatic distribution so more of you can begin experiencing the benefits.

Compumind and StephenReynolds, we continue to work with partners in providing updated device drivers so that folks can install Windows Vista SP1 who have some of the problematic drivers we've listed. When we have new information to share we will share it of course. Everyone understands folks want to be able to install SP1.

StephenReynolds, while we continue to work with partners to provide updated drivers for folks - we will continue to create blog posts for this blog. I apologize if you find this insulting. Our readers expect to see regular content here so that is what we will continue to do.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

fm4real, this isn't the right place for technical support - I suggest either contacting Gateway about your issue or contacting Microsoft Support:

It's been well over an $#%##%$ing YEAR now. The RTM build of the service pack was finished LAST YEAR. We still have no information. I couldn't give a crap about SP1. I just want my computer to work and play sound - something I was able to do with a mockingboard on my Apple II plus 30 years ago. I do not feel I am out of line or that this is too much to ask for a "Vista Capable" stickered laptop. You can spin Vista however you want, but this whole "wow" experience is just a big turd.

StephenReynolds, while we continue to work with partners to provide updated drivers for folks - we will continue to create blog posts for this blog. I apologize if you find this insulting. Our readers expect to see regular content here so that is what we will continue to do.

Origami announcements? Glad Microsoft devoted their resources to getting THAT project done when there are still major gaping problems with their other product line. Yes, it is insulting when I see that people have been begging for answers for months with no real indication of any progression.

    These forums are worthless.

Regarding Sigma Tel, it is interesting to note that the Sigma Tel folks posted on their website that their drivers work fine with SP1. They suggested uninstalling the drivers, installing SP1 and reinstalling the drivers afterwards. Works in theory excpet Plug & Play gets in the way of that.

My point though is just how closely is Microsoft working with Sigma Tel if Microsoft says there's a problem and Sigma Tel says there's not?

StephenReynolds, not sure which service pack you are talking about but Windows Vista SP1 RTM'd *this year*. February to be exact. Over 2 months ago. Read our SP1 RTM announcement we posted:

    http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/02/04/announcing-the-rtm-of-windows-vista-sp1.aspx

So no - it hasn't been well over a year and no Windows Vista SP1 was not finished "last year".

Also: the Origami software is a group of folks who have nothing to do with the work being done on any service pack for Windows. The work that was done on SP1 and continuing to be done on support for SP1 has absolutely nothing to do with the Origami Experience software nor is Microsoft diverting resources in any way.

And these are not forums. This is a blog.

We will continue to post content on this site and when we have answers to give we will give them here or in future blog posts.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

The love side of Vista. Google site not Not MSN. To be fair.

    I love Vista 2,020,000 hits

    I love OSX 1,420,000 hits

    I love Microsoft 72,300,000 hits

    I love Apple 18,100,000 hits

    I love Vista SP1 1,970,000 hits

More people like Vista than OSX.

About 2 million people have no problem with Vista SP1.

    Hi Brandon:

    You said -

"Compumind and StephenReynolds, we continue to work with partners in providing updated device drivers so that folks can install Windows Vista SP1 who have some of the problematic drivers we've listed. When we have new information to share we will share it of course. Everyone understands folks want to be able to install SP1."

This is pure BS. I *NEED* to install SP1 due tho the basic failures in Vista. I had asked you for a status report about SigmaTel, not a canned copy n' paste response.

Perhaps the tech MEDIA need to know what is going on here and I intend to do just that!

    :0((

-So no - it hasn't been well over a year and no Windows Vista SP1 was not finished "last year".-

Brandon, what are you talking about? Vista was released at the beginning of 2007. That's 16 months. The RTM is the SAME build number as the RC code which was finished late last year on Dec 12, 2007. That's it. That's the EXACT SAME CODE that the RTM is now. Nothing has changed, so it's been almost 5 months since both the RC and RTM code is the same.

Whatever the case...even if you want to spin this as final on Feb 4th, then it's been almost 2 months with no updates other than the tiresome "we're working with our partners..." which could be another 5 years from now for all we know from your verbose responses.

-Also: the Origami software is a group of folks who have nothing to do with the work being done on any service pack for Windows-

    Yep. That's EXACTLY my point.

  10. Posted on: April 29, 2008 at 6:23PM

StephenReynolds, what are you talking about? To quote you here you said "The RTM build of the service pack was finished LAST YEAR" and this is not correct. SP1 for Windows Vista RTM'd in February - over 2 months ago this year. It didn't look like you were talking about Vista's RTM to me (which occured at the end of 2007) especially when you say "service pack". I'm not "spinning" anything. I responded to what you wrote.

I apologize if I may have misunderstood.

And in regards to "your point" about the Origami Experience - content for the blog will come from different areas from the Windows Team (or even other teams & companies that make cool apps for Windows) not just those who work on service packs for Windows here at Microsoft. Not sure I see your point really. We're certainly not going to make every blog post about SP1. When we have info to share on SP1 we will write another blog post relaying that information or leave comments just as I am doing here.

Compumind, I apologize you find my response "BS" unfortunately all I can say is that Microsoft is indeed continuing to work with partners to provide updated drivers that will help us remove the blocks in place for the problematic drivers preventing SP1 from installing on some PCs. I have not been given anything anymore specific to relay to you at this time. You asked for a update and I gave you a update. I apologize I don't have specifics yet. Threatening me by going to the "tech media" isn't going to make me give you anything more specific because as I said - I don't have anything more specific to give.

I understand folks (especially with SigmaTel drivers) want answers and when I have answers to give I will give them. I appreciate the comments and feedback folks are leaving here and continue to relay them internally to the folks who might be able to give me the answers you need and want.

But I also need to remind everyone that we need to keep comments here constructive and respectful. If these comments begin to turn unconstructive and disrespectful toward myself or anyone else I will have to disable comments on this post.

I am hoping to have answers to share with you in the very near future.

    Thanks,

    Brandon
