Welcome to The Windows Blog

Windows Vista SP1 Update

I have a quick update for you about Windows Vista SP1. The Microsoft Update Blog contains some important information about updates to the SP1 prerequisite distribution plan. Starting tomorrow, we are resuming the automatic update and installation of the Servicing Stack Update.

In mid-April, we will begin distributing SP1 (in the first 5 languages) using the Automatic Update system.  We have a lot of Windows users, so not everyone will get it on the same day.  In fact, it will go to a small percentage of Windows Vista users each day. The exact timing of when you will receive it depends on when your PC is ready for Windows Vista SP1.

In addition to starting the automatic delivery of the first 5 languages, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that also we're on track for the initial release of SP1 in the remaining languages in mid-April.

Thanks for the infomation.  While it sounds like they fixed the prerequisites problem, I am still unhappy with what happened.  The WU blog says that "a few customers" had the problem.  How about a few thousand or more.  This is spin -- a few customer means 2 or 3.  MS would not stop a WU for 3 people.

Also, they didn't not provide a fix (make that workaround) for a full week!

windows vista ultimate user254, no none of this has to do with Ultimate Extras. It is information regarding Windows Vista SP1. When we have more information on Ultimate Extras, we'll post it here.

    Thanks,

    Hello Chris and Brandon:

I have made several comments and suggestions on the other blog (3/18) when SP1 was released.

What about progress with the SigmaTel Audio Drivers and others - Perhaps you and Brandon might wish to peruse that blog again, as this blog seems geared to Windows Update prerequisites for SP1.

It would be great if you could clarify this, since the prereq's are crucial to the success of SP1 in general and then come all the other driver and download/install issues, as mentioned above.

    Thanks :0)

I won't switch to Vista till:

    1. MS fixes Explorer optionally disable autorefresh/autoarrange, disable full row select in all views and starts showing the file size on the status bar. These are glaring definciencies in a modern OS file manager.

    2. MS updates the servicing stack to skip backing up updates to %Windir%\WinSxS and free up space and incorporates back the technology to slipstream hotfixes and service packs.

    3. Offers a TweakUI powertoy for Windows Vista.

    Which I guess will be....NEVER!

    One more question -

Do I understand correctly that if you use the Standalone Installer (See KB936330) that the  prerequisites are NOT required (If Automactic Windows Update was disabled?)

Oh, Brandon the wording of that KB still says not to use the Standalone Installer if you updating just one computer. Thought that was supposed to be corrected. Date of the KB is still 3/18/2008.

    :0)

@someone: You can disable auto-arrange. You can draw a selection rectangle "trough" unselected rows and the file size is displayed in the details pane at the bottom. There is no status bar anymore.

And there are tweak tools out there for Vista like "TweakVI".

Compumind, I am aware of the phrasing on that before-mentioned KB needing to be revised...the proper folks know about it.

Also: the standalone installer includes the prerequisites for SP1 I'm told. So they are still required but just included all together in the installer.

And trust me, I am well aware of you wanting to see an update from us on the status of the SigmaTel Audio Drivers and others. :-)

Currently, I'm told folks here at Microsoft continuing to work with partners to provide updated drivers as soon as possible. When I have a specific update I'll be sure it gets to you and others here on the blog.

When Microsoft released Windows Vista's first service pack last month, you had to take action to get it. You could either download it by manually launching Windows Update, or go grab a XXX-megabyte file at the Microsoft Download Center....
