Update on Windows Vista SP1 Prerequisite KB937287

UPDATE 2/21: When calling 1-866-PC-Safety - be sure to let the support agent know you are calling in reference to a Windows Update issue. Also: Microsoft has released KB949358 containing information regarding the issues related to KB937287.

We've heard a few reports about problems customers may be experiencing as a result of KB937287, the servicing stack update I blogged about last week, and I wanted to provide a quick update for you. Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes.

So far, we've been able to determine that this problem only affects a small number of customers in unique circumstances. We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue.

Customers who may be experiencing this issue can use system restore to correct it or contact 1-866-PC-Safety for help troubleshooting.  Additional guidance will be available via Microsoft's free Update Support Center soon.

I've got a Sony tx series running Vista business and this update screwed me.  I get the configuring update 3 of 3 message then it shuts down and reboots.  I can't even begin to tell you how pissed I am.  Of course the Sony doesn't ship with a Vista CD/DVD just has a restore partition so I guess I'm screwed considering none of the safe mode boot up options override the stupid patch.  I love how there is a safe mode option to boot in safe mode with restarting the pc on fatal errors, but it's totally ignored by this patch.  Why put the option in there if it's not going to work?  I have a serious dislike for apple and linux but it's crap like this that pushes me towards the otherside.

I will now fume in private as I contemplate sledge hammer, chain saw or 12 gauge.

I have been having issues updating vista, so much so that after each update I get a blue screen saying "there is an software problem and Windows shut down to protect your computer" or something to that effect.  I believed I was trying to update to many things at once, so I rolled back the pc to the beginning of the month and then chose to update only one update at a time, only to have the same problem.  I finally had half of the updates loaded despite having to hard boot the computer several times.  After all the updates where done, the computer would stay alive for about 10 minutes and then shut off in order to "protect your computer from harm."  I tried to rollback agian but the system would simply reboot over and over.  I have finally given up trying to update Vista myself and taken it to a service tech for $80 and hour.  Once this pc is up and running I will revert back to Windows XP and make  this machine as a toy.

I went out and bought a MAC desktop and plan to become a hard MAC fan and use Windows only for some web browsing and maybe play a game once and a while.  Good luck Windows.

Not sure how giving everyone SP1 would have been worse than releasing these updates...  If it had been on the downloads site, Microsoft may have realized before the average users had problems...maybe they should have listened to those of us here...

    Hi Nick,

I'm also having the prerequisite patch issue with Vista Ultimate 32-bit. The tech support guy I'm emailing with just said I should do an 'in-place upgrade', but I see you recommend 'system restore'. Who to believe?

    Thanks,

    Tim

Hi. I have a Acer Aspire 1692WLMI with Vista Business English 32bit and that update installed correctly, no problem at all. I'm using a Vista version from the MSDNAA. I'm quite happy with Vista, the only annoyance is the OPENGL performace which is pretty bad.

Who is "We" in the original posts statement "We've heard a few reports..."?

Isn't this a Microsoft blog?  I think that's a HUGE understatement!  Thousands of people are having this problem. ("Stage 3 of 3" reboot loop)

If you're "lucky" enough to have a system restore point, that'll fix it.  For us other half that don't have restore points enabled because of our mistrust of our government (or other reasons), we need a more complete solution.

I'm hoping the latest solution noted by bmorris above (link included again below) will fix my laptop when I get home tonight.  But it's NO THANKS TO MICROSOFT -- and in fact the MS person monitoring that forum has suggested people hold off on trying that because it might require reinstalling the OS -- the only other solution to fix the problem now anyway!!!

    WOW! :(
