Update on Windows Vista SP1 Prerequisite KB937287

UPDATE 2/21: When calling 1-866-PC-Safety - be sure to let the support agent know you are calling in reference to a Windows Update issue. Also: Microsoft has released KB949358 containing information regarding the issues related to KB937287.

We've heard a few reports about problems customers may be experiencing as a result of KB937287, the servicing stack update I blogged about last week, and I wanted to provide a quick update for you. Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes.

So far, we've been able to determine that this problem only affects a small number of customers in unique circumstances. We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue.

Customers who may be experiencing this issue can use system restore to correct it or contact 1-866-PC-Safety for help troubleshooting.  Additional guidance will be available via Microsoft's free Update Support Center soon.

I too am stuck in the update loop and have been for about a week.

It lists the update as available, after clicking the install button and waiting for the install to finish, it says it's successful and has me reboot.  It then configures, powers down, configures again, powers down again, then comes up and says the update has failed. With Error Code E0000203. There are also several (8) entries listed in the System Log:

    * Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update 938371-336_RTM_neutral_PACKAGE from package KB938371(Update) into Staging(Staging) state

    * Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB938371 (Update) into Staging(Staging) state

    * Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB938371_1 (Update) into Default(Default) state

    * Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB938371_2 (Update) into Default(Default) state

    * Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB938371_3 (Update) into Default(Default) state

    * Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB938371_6 (Update) into Default(Default) state

    * Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB938371_12 (Update) into Default(Default) state

I, too, have tried the system restore with no luck. I'll continue to mess around with it to see if I can get it to work as I really don't want to have to call somewhere and waste hours on the phone.

Oh, looks like I miscounted the number of errors ;) there are 7, and they are identical every time I try to install the update.

I have installed KB937287 two times now. After the first install I got a memoryleak error several times every day on Vista Home Premium notebook. I did system recovery and it fixed the problem.. Until I got the update again as it's flagged "important" and can't be bypassed. And now i have the memoryleak problem again. Either fix your stupid OS or I'm gonna get a pirated XP for life, since it's out of the market and can't be bought anymore. Why make a new horrible OS if the old one works perfectly? Stupid.

I been through the pains of new windows OSs since the first windows release.  It's gruesome.  First rule is don't update until at least 6 months have pasted. Second rule is if you can't wait, use a different disk that you can afford to reformat.

I have and HP laptop with ultimate 64.  The 64 bit version runs much faster than the 32 bit version.  When SP1 is released, will it be for both 64 and 32?

Please, we need more information, and a fix immediately.  I am a professional technician and was at a client's installing RAM and upon turning it back on, it was in the infinite reboot loop.  It was a regular Dell Inspiron laptop, non-technical user that got the update automatically and it installed upon my shutting down the computer.  This will crop up even more as users shut down, make these words.

There should never be an automatic update that cripples a computer like this.

System Restore did not work, Safe Mode would not work.  Because my user could not be down waiting for Microsoft to tell him how to recover his dead computer, I fixed it myself.  It has been a week since this was released and still nothing?

The fix is here, but has not be commented on by Microsoft:

    http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?postid=2873378&isthread=false&siteid=17&authhash=7f2056e7cf93af49d9d8704602bc97be8b4c437b&ticks=633390464558901682&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=5

The trouble is that the computer shows this message:  "Configuring Updates: Stage 3 of 3 0%" and reboots over and over.

    Hi Nick,

It would be incredibly helpful with a post like this to give symptoms of the problem. While I have not experienced any trouble on the two SP1 machines I'm running right now, I do support users on Vista machines. I only know that there "could be" problems for them, but I have no idea what to listen out for.

Other than that, thanks for the information. Keep up the hard work!

I had trouble after installing the update. My setup includes two monitors and a 8600GTS. After the update (which appeared as "failed" in Windows Update) I was able to use only one monitor and the computer would BSOD whenever I tried to change it back as I had it. And all the time Windows Update kept asking me to install KB937287.

The BSOD message blamed a video driver file, so I uninstalled the video drivers completely, installed KB937287 this time successfully and then installed the latest nVidia drivers.

That worked like a charm, I was able to return to my preferred set-up and everything is now up to date. I hope this helps some people.
