Update on Windows Vista SP1 Prerequisite KB937287

UPDATE 2/21: When calling 1-866-PC-Safety - be sure to let the support agent know you are calling in reference to a Windows Update issue. Also: Microsoft has released KB949358 containing information regarding the issues related to KB937287.

We've heard a few reports about problems customers may be experiencing as a result of KB937287, the servicing stack update I blogged about last week, and I wanted to provide a quick update for you. Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes.

So far, we've been able to determine that this problem only affects a small number of customers in unique circumstances. We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue.

Customers who may be experiencing this issue can use system restore to correct it or contact 1-866-PC-Safety for help troubleshooting.  Additional guidance will be available via Microsoft's free Update Support Center soon.

    Hi,

I encountered error message with error code 0x80070052 while installing Vista SP1 on my Vista Ultimate 64-bit machine.

I followed the link mentioned in the error message and did what he said, but still failed with same error.

The two prerequisites are installed (i can find them in Control Panel.

I don't want to reinstall Vita, is there anything i can do for it?

    Thank you.

    sam.

Hi mht, how are you installing SP1? The error code looks like a file-copy error of some sort.

Unfortunately this isn't the right place for technical support - you can also check out the Windows Technical Support site which offers discussion groups where support folks from Microsoft as well as members of the community can possibly help you with your issue:

Thanks Brandon, I did try the following:

    1. Booting to Safe Mode...no change.

    2. System Restore Point...only point available on this system was the one initiated by this current MS update :-(

    3. All the System Recovery Options on the list that don't require a complete install of the OS (don't want to lose critical data files)

    4. Tried Command Prompt (Dos) using wusa.exe with the specific KB937287 .msu file downloaded from Microsoft...I get an error message 0x80040154 Class not Registered

    from: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934307

Any other suggestions? Much appreciated...Go Canucks!

    5. Voodoo doll and "lucky rabbit's foot"...still waiting on the outcome of this one... :-)

    S. Marusic - there was no option available that lets you view older system restore points?

You should contact 1-866-PC-Safety for help troubleshooting further - as the support folks can help you preserve your data and try to get you up in running.

    Hi Brandon,

    Thanks for your quick respond.

I think i found the root cause of SP1 installing failed on my system.

A while ago, I changed the C:\User folder to another volume on my system. After change it back, now SP1 was installed on my system w/o error.

    Thanks again.

    sam.

mht, glad to hear it! Yeah that error had something to do with file-copying and is related to other file-copying errors so I assume when SP1 attempted to install it had an issue with your User folder being not where it should and had issues copying something over since the directory was not there. Not sure. I'll have to report this issue to folks here at Microsoft.

    Glad things worked out!

System restore did not work for me.  I uninstalled that update, but since it was already downloaded, I think it had installed itself again.  The only way I could use my computer again is by uninstalling my antivirus software and all those updates, then reinstalling the updates.  I now have no anitvirus software because that computer is on a dialup connection, and the only way I can install McAfee is by downloading it on that PC... :(

Nick, thx for all the info you give.

There is however something that really bugs me: you, or rather Microsoft, does not seem to come with a foolproof solution to the problem.

After Microsoft told me that it is a god thing to use automatic update, I did that on a client's customer, which is now almost dead.

How is it possible that we cannot even get access to the command prompt, from which we could try to delete the update files or to bypass this update as well?

How is it possible that Microsoft posts such a killing bull, and the still finds no solution other than re-installing the full machine?

Telling that a "small number of machines is affected" would probably need more substance and fact, until then this looks like wishful prayer.

Microsoft might consider testing non-MS tools or equivalents so that we can nuke this update attempt (Windows-PE, Bart-PE, or [yes!!] Linux)?

Sorry to look and be so aggressive, but I never like having my clients pay me for something that is caused by a 3rd party, specially when this 3rd party has the muscle and the reputation of Microsoft.

Dear Nick and MS in General,

I am a computer hobbyist as well as the VP Finance and IS at an SMB.  As such I am the senior IS decision maker for my company and the major decision influencer for friends, family and acquaintances.

I would love to fully embrace windows and be passionate about the operating system and its possibilities, but you guys are keeping me from doing that.  If I embrace windows I tacitly embrace all of your screw ups.

And what monumental screw ups.  Vista ships after many delays without most of the highly touted features and with a large number of bugs.  Then the fixes take a year, but we can't get the fix yet, oh wait, yes you can, oh no the prerequisite fixes for the fix are broken.

You also are not doing anything to help those of us who like to tinker with computers and networks in our spare time embrace Windows.  You're not cool.  You want to be in the data center (running Exchange and MSsql) and you want to be on the desktop of the average suburban home (making picture albums and posters for school fairs), but you have nothing for the high end hobbyist.

By way of example, part of the reason file copy was so slow in Vista was that it was optimized for transfers over high latency networks like the ones found in large companies.  On the gigabit network a hobbyist has at home, transfers were painfully slow.

Controls for the Vista firewall are simple and allow the average home user to at least have one in place.  But if I want to tweak it I have to get to the Group Policy editor and the controls are a mess, to say the least.

The bottom line is, that between the screwups and the lack of love shown to people who want to like Windows and Vista, you are shooting yourselves in the foot.  Loyalty and trust are earned and you're accounts are badly in the red.

I hope you turn this thing around, you sure need to.

i agree with Fibo_fr and shollomon but its not that its about the consumer who using windows vista i said before but windows vista is not turning out so great this no offense but we had alot bad times with this os from no windows ultimate extras. alot bugs.slow performence and hardware that is not vista capable. and now this update issue crippling user computers you need to think more about the issues and fixes.windows vista is a cool and better then xp but with all this issue its windows xp vs windows vista i think windows xp is ahead because windows vista is creating alot of promblems but its still a new day and windows vista is still new but these issues is crippling windows vista and its users. i really hope you can do better because windows vista cool and better but it needs more
