Update on Windows Vista SP1 Prerequisite KB937287

UPDATE 2/21: When calling 1-866-PC-Safety - be sure to let the support agent know you are calling in reference to a Windows Update issue. Also: Microsoft has released KB949358 containing information regarding the issues related to KB937287.

We've heard a few reports about problems customers may be experiencing as a result of KB937287, the servicing stack update I blogged about last week, and I wanted to provide a quick update for you. Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes.

So far, we've been able to determine that this problem only affects a small number of customers in unique circumstances. We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue.

Customers who may be experiencing this issue can use system restore to correct it or contact 1-866-PC-Safety for help troubleshooting.  Additional guidance will be available via Microsoft's free Update Support Center soon.

James: It seems to me you'd be unlikely to experience problems, if I were you I wouldn't worry about it, although without more specific details about the problem it's impossible to know for sure.

user254: They made the update available, which doesn't mean they forced everyone to download it.  Obviously that is impossible even if they wanted to because there are still systems without internet access.  Even though the recommended Automatic Updates setting downloads and applies patches automatically you can change this setting at any time so you can better control the updates that are applied to your PC.

Also formatting your computer is a bit of an extreme solution and makes me think you did not try some of the easier solutions.  I don't like Vista myself but I believe the Vista DVD can do a System Restore when you boot off the disc, which would have been the first thing I would have tried (assuming the system wasn't even bootable in safe mode; if it was it would have been even easier).  This problem is exactly the sort of thing System Restore is made to fix.

If System Restore did not fix it, and the system is not bootable, it is easy enough to reinstall Vista (or XP) without having to format and wipe the drive.  I have done this with XP multiple times.  The only data lost are custom files dumped into C:\WINDOWS (custom cursors, sounds, themes...) which can be easily backed up to another directory with the command prompt on Vista's bootable DVD.  Of course if you reinstall Windows you lose your installed applications... however many well-coded apps will run regardless of whether their old registry data is present or not.  Those that do not require a simple reinstall to get working again.  (I'm not sure if Windows wipes Program Files when it installs, I don't install any programs there anyways.  I use a different drive.)

Reinstalling Windows can be made much less painful by integrating service packs, hotfixes, and your favorite windows addons and other programs right into an installation DVD.  Google around, there are plenty of programs to automate this, and you end up with a nearly unattend-able installer which can seriously cut the time it takes to get your machine back up and running.

I understand with .WIM images in Vista, you can set your system up just the way you like it, and then create a WIM image of the disk, and then that becomes an install DVD.  Very slick.

Well I've been rambling but I'm sure something in there will be helpful to someone. :)

This is a screenshot of Windows Update on my x64 machine.  You will notice that the KB937287 (third update from the top) doesn't have the x64 description on it.  This is the update that I downloaded in stalled manually, as the automatic update for this "failed".  You will also notice that there are a few other updates that are marked as "failed" as well.  Did anyone else experience this as well?

Am I to believe that KB937287 is indeed installed on my machine?
