Non-security update rolls out Tuesday

Tomorrow, Tuesday 8 January, we are releasing several non-security update packages via Windows Update.  The updates include the regular monthly Malicious Software Removal Tool and Windows Mail Junk Mail Filter, two updates in our regular series of Windows Vista updates (KB943302 for application compatibility and KB943899 for reliability and performance), and one update of particular notice: KB935509.  Similar to previous updates that enhanced Windows Vista’s performance and reliability, these updates will be distributed automatically through Windows Update.

Tomorrow’s KB935509 release is a little different than past updates.  It is a prerequisite for installing SP1 and is applicable only for Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise users, because it only affects versions of Windows Vista supporting BitLocker Drive Encryption.

This update modifies the boot loader to enable successful install or uninstall of the service pack if the PC uses BitLocker encryption.  We’re releasing it now to lay the groundwork for future updates and to eliminate any extra reboots by installing it along with updates that already require a reboot.  For more information on the update, see KB article KB935509 (which will be posted on Tuesday morning).

In addition to KB985509, there are two other updates that will be prerequisites for Windows Vista SP1, for all versions of Windows Vista.  They will be released at a later date and will improve the installation experience and reliability for the service pack as well as for individual update packages.

SP1 development and testing efforts are continuing as expected and we remain on track for its release later this quarter.

Hey ulric:  you might find support for this issue via a TechNet forum, if it has already been identified:  http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/default.aspx?ForumGroupID=204&SiteID=17.  If not, feel free to make mention of it there, as I know our product team regularly culls those threads for feedback.  I'll also make sure it is seen and considered by our Dev team per your comment here -- thanks.

With the last Vista update, my Windows Mail contacts started having problems.  I can no longer edit any of the contacts.  If I click on a contact name, a box flashes up for a fraction of a second and then nothing.

Hey Tony Presley:  your best bet is to discuss this issue in the Windows Vista public newsgroups to see if it's been identified and whether there's a work-around:  http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/default.aspx?ForumGroupID=204&SiteID=17.

I have posted this question to Microsoft's newsgroups but all I get is comments stating that my idea is stupid and of no use. However, I think it would help many people overcome restore problems. Many people delete all prior restore points for the purpose of increasing disk space. This eliminates all restore points until a manual one is made or one is made automatically. With no restore points the only way to sometimes successfully correct problems is to do a reinstall. Why not give people the option of selecting a specific restore point and then deleting all restore points prior to that one instead of deleting all of them? They could then save the latest four, five, six, etc, etc restore points in the event of an emergency recovery. If you think this ideal is stupid please let me know and I won't bring the subject up again. Thank you for your time.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, like others here, KB935509 is continually failing to install... Something to do with having a dual-boot machine? :\

Will hunt in the suggested forums. This is definitely a major pain if SP1 is dependent on this.

One of the three prerequisites for the Vista SP1 upgrade is available now. According to the Vista team blog, KB935509, the first of these, "modifies the boot loader to enable successful install or uninstall of the service pack if the PC uses BitLocker
