10 Things You May Not Know about Windows Vista - IntelliPoint Software

How many of you have hooked up a new Microsoft keyboard and/or mouse and didn't install the included IntelliPoint software because Windows automatically found the hardware?   As long as things worked when connected, I didn't miss some of the features that the IntelliPoint Software added.

But now that I've installed the software with Windows Vista, that's all changed.  The team has added so many improvements in the IntelliPoint software functionality that I thought I'd conclude our 10 Things about Windows Vista series by discussing some of the lesser-known features of the IntelliPoint software.  These features add functionality not only to those who may have problems with the fine print on some sites, but give the hardware more usability for the everyday user as well as the power user and gamer.

I'm using the new Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 keyboard.  If you're looking for a new keyboard, check this out - www.microsoft.com/hardware/ultimatekeyboard, now available.   The set features a 2.4GHz Bluetooth super thin, backlit rechargeable keyboard and mouse. The keyboard is easy to use with its ergonomic design, including "My Favorites" programmable hot keys, one-touch access to Windows Media Center and a navigation pad to make navigation even easier.  The backlighting is automatic and turns on and off depending on the room‘s lighting and the proximity of the user.

The mouse uses High Definition Laser Technology for smooth, precise tracking.  It offers 4-way scrolling and Flip 3D with its tilt wheel.  It automatically adjusts battery life depending on the performance needs.

Some of the features of the IntelliPoint software:

Magnifier
Although Windows Vista has a built-in magnifier that enlarges text and icons for easier viewing, the IntelliPoint software acts more like a real magnifying glass.  You can select the size of the magnifying window to encompass either a small section of a document, Web page, or photo.  The size is customizable by dragging the window to your preferred size.  The size you select will be remembered for future use.  You can also change the magnification level from 1.5x to 5x.

Some keyboards also have a ‘Magnifier' button that can be used alone or in conjunction with the mouse controls.

Instant Viewer

For those of you who use a mouse to navigate, this feature is similar to the keyboard shortcut ‘Alt-Tab.'   With a quick push of the mouse wheel, you can see every application that's open.  After moving the cursor to any of the windows, a quick mouse click brings the window to the front.

Precision Booster

If you're a gamer and your mouse supports this, Precision Booster will increase or decrease the speed of the pointer for improved accuracy. You'll be able to move around the screen much faster.  A quick press and hold increases the speed until released, or just press and release the assigned button to toggle the speed up and then press and release again to resume normal speed.

The hot keys on the Microsoft keyboards and mice are fully customizable to work with the IntelliPoint software.

Flip 3D

One-touch access to Windows Flip 3D on the mouse allows users to flip through open windows in a stack, and quickly switch between applications for added productivity.

Flip 3D comes pre-programmed to the scroll wheel button on the Mobile Memory Mouse 8000 and Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 7000.  The software allows the user to program Flip 3D to any of the mouse buttons.  I've also found that the software enables Flip 3D on my old trackball using the center button.  As I really like trackballs, this was a great surprise.

Also available with IntelliPoint Software Version 6.2 and Supported Hardware

The problem with the Intellipoint software is that it is no more possible to assign the click/lock function to a mouse  button other than what they offer now and, that is, by holding down the main button for a certain time.

Before it was possible to assign the lock function,  for exemple, to the right mouse button or any other button and with a really short click without any need to hold down the button after, your lock function was activated.

Obviously, people who did programmed the Intellipoint software don't use their mouse in a professionnal context!

What a huge difference it make when you can select/lock an object with just realy single short click without having to hold down the button with your finger for a second (or more). Does these peoples know about "cannal carpien" syndrome ?

Again, the way the lock  function is implemented is unuseable in a context where you need to constantly use the lock function.

Recently I bought a microsoft mouse to use on my Window (mac-pro) partition but I did returned it because of that. The irony is that on Mac OSX, the intellipoint software still allow to assign the lock function to any button. But I need a mouse that work well in both OS and Logitech mouse are just sh***T on MacOSX. What A joke that only the Microsoft mouse work well under Mac OSX !

Anyway, would it be possible that Microsoft change back their Intellipoint software and allow again to assing the lock function to any  mouse button ?

I have a Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 running on Home Basic, my problem is when I use the Instant Viewer, it only show blank boxes of the programs that I'm running, not like in the screenshot - is this issue with the lack of Aero? Btw, great product!

Also, I notice IntelliPoint v6.2 have a update program (dpupdchk.exe) running in the background on boot. I wondering if it would create a bottleneck in the system and shouldn’t Microsoft Update handling the update?

The "Instant Viewer" (Expose-like) feature should be added as a feature that people with non-Microsoft mice can use. It should be part of Vista.

Also, I would get the 8000 keyboard if it weren't for the fact that the mouse doesn't have a forward button.

10 things you would WANT to know about vista:

    --------------------

    1. its quality is certainly worse that windows XP

    2. its securities can still be easily exploited

    3. most of its features are irrelevant and useless

    4. it is harder to use, why change from a perfectly normal OS like XP to the poor quality vista

    5. microsoft is releasing windows 7 as an attempt to cover up the poor quality of vista

    6. the licensing scheme of vista is a rip-off

    7. microsoft forces the normal consumers to use Vista, hence the antitrust case in Europe.

    8. MacOS is quickly gaining popularity in the market, hence the Vista release is a pathetic attempt to preserve a declining market share

    9. microsoft hides the user administrative features of vista from the normal user, which makes it harder to administer, certainly makes it less popular to network administrators alike.

    10. how many companies have actually migrated their entire network to a pure vista based platform? not one. Why? because it's a rip-off.

Help.  My Windows Vista will not connect to the internet now.  The computer works fine at the store.  Goes to the internet in the store and when I get it home does not recognize the network at home.  It did when I first got it.   My laptop works fine with the ethernet cord as well as wireless.  So there must be some setting in the Windows Vista program that does not let me connect to the internet.

    Please help!!!!

Maybe someone else has had this frustrating problem and will be happy to know how to fix it.

When booting up into vista, the mouse would not start - instead I needed to restart and then the mouse would be active.

By changing the PS2 check in the system setup (F10 at boot) to "enable" from "Auto" the mouse now always comes up.
