An update from the Ultimate Extras team

update 13:59 PDT:  DreamScene is not available in the Windows Vista SP1 Beta; however, it will be made available with a later release of SP1.

Barry Goffe, Director of Marketing for Windows Vista Ultimate, has posted an update about Ultimate Extras over on windowsultimate.com.  The upshot of Barry's note is that today we're releasing via Windows Update the final version of Windows DreamScene, as we'd committed to doing earlier this summer.  We're doing this in conjunction with Stardock, with whom we're offering some really cool new 3D animated DreamScene desktops.  Stardock has been a terrific community partner in helping us finalize the DreamScene release and further extending the capabilities of Windows Vista.  In fact, Stardock has created DeskScapes, a tool that extends Windows DreamScene by enabling it to run animated wallpapers as .dream files.  These files can be looped video or dynamically generated 3D content, and can even change based on a set of triggers.  The Stardock Dream Gallery is the place for the community to create, upload and share custom DreamScenes with the Windows Vista Ultimate community.

Pop over to Stardock's Dream.WinCustomize.com website to upload and share the new DreamScenes.

Barry also notes that because delivering only high-quality Extras is our top priority, we're delaying delivery of the remaining MUI Language Packs for the moment.  This is certainly disappointing news, but because we found an installation bug late in the release validation process, we are not comfortable with releasing the remaining Language Packs before that installation issue is resolved.  It's far more important to provide Extras that give Ultimate customers a completely superlative experience than to meet a deadline by providing a compromised product.

As an aside, Ultimate customers will notice that in anticipation of SP1, the screen that welcomes you to Windows Ultimate Extras has been simplified and the explanation more focused on the breadth of features that future Extras will bring.  Windows Ultimate Extras was conceived to extend Windows features and to make using your computer more fun, so this text better reflects our direction.

We expect to provide additional updates on the availability of the Language Packs -- along with news on the pipeline of future Extras -- in the very near future.  I'll have more information here on the blog when that occurs.

    yup, they finally shipped something.

And looking at the performance, it would appear that they just recompiled it with "beta" removed and delivered it.  Yup, 6, 7 months of time well spent.

So, apparently this version of dreamscene was 'ready' two months ago. How does that fit into the explanation?

So, with new information pouring in over how little work was actually performed on Dreamscene (no surprise considering it really didn't seem to change at all) combined with a very, very botched released, what we all have to as is:

How many people are on the Vista Ultimates Team now?  Are there ANY at all?  Is this something a few people do in their spare time when they aren't working on something else?  Seriously, what the heck is going on in there?

It would certainly explain why they don't blog - there is no one to actually blog.

Hey Chris3d:  I checked with my colleagues working on DS and they informed me that it's usually a good idea to update your video driver (from the manufacturer's web site), to clean out any strange video codec packs that are not in use, and also to get the latest codec packs.  Hopefully this helps.

    Nick,

Thanks for the reply.  I have the ATI radeon drivers which came out on 9/10/07 installed, along with the KLite Codec Pack.  I have also tried the Vista Codec Pack (VCP 4.5 Final) with no luck.  I have found that it is only an issue when using .mpeg videos, and that I can convert them to .wmv and they work fine.

Obviously some folks have gotten DreamScene to install on their Vista Ultimate.  I cannot get it to do a successful install after following all of MS KB's to solve the "failed update" problem.  Has anyone out there had the same problem and found a solution?

Well, at least it's out, and if I ever get hold of SP1 I'll install Vista and give it a go.

Given Stardock's background in desktop productivity through Object Desktop and DesktopX though, it would be more useful to see productive rather than visual enhancements, however.

Say an integrated disk space usage mapper for instance, or a Windows search integrated duplicate finder, where it stores the hash of each file to prevent duplicates, or virtual desktops, or a proper macro recording facility where text can be pasted via hotkeys, or say multiple clipboards.

So far the extras really aren't in the same league as the powertoys were.

I have a 64 bit Vista Ultimate OS and installed the Windows DreamScene three times last night(it actually shows up in the update history three times, does this sounds right?).  But still can not see the content pack update available,  What's wrong?

Hey Syllopsium:  thanks for the Extras suggestions, I'll make sure Barry and team are aware of your ideas (they're good ones, IMO).
