An explanation of Windows Update automatic updating

The Microsoft Update team has posted a statement addressing the current community discussion on Windows Update's self-updating behavior.  The upshot is that a longstanding procedure in Windows Update requires it to self-update before it is able to recognize that new updates are available (note: WU does not conduct a self-update event each and every time it checks for updates).  This self-updating is done regardless of whether the user has enabled automatic checking, download and/or installation of updates.  It does so in an effort to avoid WU misleading the user to think s/he is up-to-date simply because s/he was not receiving notification that updates are available.  Put another way, WU cannot alert the user that there are security updates available if it is not in the necessary updated state that will allow it to recognize those updates (see "chicken and egg" dilemma).

However, we do recognize that we should have been clearer in our explanation of this process earlier in the game; the MU team's blog post is an effort to rectify that oversight.

In short, this is a poorly understood process, so I invite you to take a look at the details in the MU blog post to learn more.

Questions on this behavior are best addressed directly to the team via the MU blog.

Hey hhurtta:  there are times when updates require an update to files and applications currently in use.  In order to complete the installation of the update, those programs must be shut down.  All reboots required for update installation follow the policies and settings selected on your machine, so if a reboot is required, this will be handled by the WU settings or can be overridden by Group Policy.

if anyone wants to trade, i have a computer with windows vista that won't install any of the updates. even if i manually attempt to install the updates, the computer has an error and the installation fails.

i'll trade with anyone else. you can get an un-updating windows vista that's all screwed and i'll get yer machine?

Why would I trade?? You throw yours away for not updating, I'll throw mine away for updating without permission, and we can both go get MACS! I am furious with microsoft over this invasion on privacy/unauthorized manipulation of software. Microsoft update took a perfectly good running machine, updated while i was in the middle of formatting a drive and ruined the partition.. Not to mention I was having compatability issues with vista and whatever that update is that RUINED my partition when it rebooted on its own not even giving me an option to wait till later, NOW the software i was having the issues with but could work around before DOESNT work properly anymore...I'm not here just to bash MS Ive always preferred PC's over MAC but the direction they're going is not one I'd like to follow. What am i supposed to do about my partition???? Who's going to pay for that?? ME..Now Today i cannot run software i could run yesterday??? SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR COMPUTER ALONE WHEN IT IS WORKING FINE. WHY FIX SOMETHING THAT ISNT BROKE??!?! SOMETIMES YOU MIGHT END UP BREAKING SOMETHING TRYING TO DO THAT!! Thanks alot Microsoft you just lost another customer...

    Hello,

Regarding Windows Update, I have Vista Home Premium on my PC and have been unable to use the update feature for several weeks. It does not matter whether i put it on automatic or try to manually install, it will not download anything. Can anyone help me to fix this?  Thanks

Hey bruce109:  because we're not equipped to offer support here via the blog, you're better off directing your inquiry to our Windows Update forum:  http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&lang=en&cr=US&r=35a08973-862c-479d-b043-0aca832430b1.
