Announcing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta

update @ 14:53 PDT:  The exec closest to the development process, Core Operating System Division (COSD) Sr. VP Jon DeVaan, gives his personal take on Windows Vista SP1 over at Press Pass -- check it out.

Now is the time and the time is now:  let's talk about Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).  Much has been made of what will or will not be included in SP1 and when it will be released (some accurate, some otherwise).  I'm here to set the story straight:  we're in the process of developing and deploying a Beta version of SP1.  This post will describe for you what to expect from that effort and how you can be involved in the process.

First, a note on service packs.  As you are aware, service packs are part of our traditional software lifecycle; they’re something we do for most major products as a commitment to continuous improvement.  But, the servicing situation has changed with the advent of Windows Vista, as we no longer rely solely on service packs as the main vehicle used to deploy system fixes and improvements.  The Windows Update online service is one new way to deliver many OS improvements.  For example, yesterday in advance of SP1 we released via Windows Update two separate improvements to Windows Vista’s reliability and performance.  We did this prior to SP1 in lieu of requiring customers to wait for these fixes to be rolled into a single service pack.  Beyond this, we improve the Windows Vista experience by continuing to work closely with software partners to ensure application compatibility.  We likewise align efforts with partners on the hardware side of the business to broaden the range of devices that work with Windows Vista and to constantly improve device driver quality.

What is SP1?  What is it not?

In addition to updates we’ve previously released, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues we’ve identified via customer feedback, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards.  SP1 also makes additional improvements to the IT administration experience.  We didn’t design SP1 as a vehicle for releasing new features; however, some existing components do gain enhanced functionality in SP1.

More information on what’s included in SP1 can be found in the detailed white paper.

When can I get my hands on the Beta of SP1?

A Beta release of Windows Vista SP1 is slated for availability in the next few weeks.  A small group of testers has been putting a preview of the SP1 Beta through its paces to help prepare for broader release.  We made the choice to start with a very small group of testers because we think it’s better for both our customers and for Microsoft to keep the beta program small at the start.

A later pre-release of SP1 will be available to a larger group of testers  via MSDN and TechNet subscribers.

And what about SP1 itself -- when will that be available?

We're targeting releasing SP1 to manufacturing in the first quarter of 2008, but as always, we’re first and foremost focused on delivering a high-quality release, so we'll determine the exact release date of SP1 after we have reached that quality bar. (FYI, in case you didn’t already know:  the Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 engineering efforts are aligned, so the Server team also said on their blog today that they are targeting the first quarter of 2008 for their release to manufacturing.)

-----

That’s all for now.  Expect more SP1 information here on the blog soon, as well as on MSDN and TechNet when the time comes.  In the meantime, I’d encourage you to check out the Windows Vista SP1 white paper for more detail.  Stay tuned!

    That's a really good news!

    Good afternoon Nick - it’s nice to see Microsoft trying to address issues with Vista.

    The reason I am posting is that I would like to ask a question on behalf of the gaming community (which is supported under the games for windows idiom)

    First and foremost is the driver signing issue.  Many companies I have heard refuse to do certified Microsoft drivers for the cost and work involved, this includes Netcom.  Why is Driver signing so important to the end user? It never seemed to be a problem in XP.  Is service pack 1 going to allow you the option to just CHOOSE whether you want to check for signed drivers?

    Because of the driver signing issue, many of us cannot risk having hardware conflicts with the OS. We are talking serious outlays of money for systems way above the average office machine.

    If this issue is fixed, then a lot of people in the gaming world will upgrade I would imagine.  If not, I guess many will hold with XP.

    I am sorry if I posted in the wrong place, but in the white paper the work that was being done on the issue mentioned was a little ambiguous.

    i've got similiar problem with divx and SP1 for vista.

    after instaled SP1 when playing any divx movie after i got "invalid floating point operation". i tryed this on Divx 6.x.x (newest one), xvid, ffdshow.

  5. Posted on: September 04, 2007 at 11:29PM

    lol... So, SP1 makes the Divx6.6.x or *.avi issue even worse. That is great news! I am wondering if Microsoft considers this an issue since a lot of Divx formats can be attributed to illegal downloads. But, there are legitimate uses for this format considering the compression and quality of Divx.

    @Brytown

    I actually use K-lite or I have even tried the individual codecs with nothing installed except the codec itself. I do this a lot with apps as I dont need all the junk that comes with it. I just want the app and that is it.

    I know what you are talking about the so called "UPDATES" from NERO but the same is with Nvidia and the likes. Heck, I have issues with my X-Fi Fatality with Vista. Everyone seems to be having issues with the drivers.

    I dont know if this is just because Vista is so differnt? Couldnt tell you since the Coding is in the category of (If you see it Microsoft will kill you.) But, from what I see with Vista it almost looks like a Steriod induced XP SP3. Everything else is pretty much the same from what I see in the registry.

    Drivers shouldnt be that much of an issue unless Microsoft is not sharing the coding that needs to be shared. This is why Linux doesnt have driver issues as the core is shared amongst the community.

    I know Microsoft needs to make money but lets get real. In order to get good drivers so you dont get so many issues, crashes, BSOD's, and so forth; share a little more coding than you already are (Microsoft). This is really obvious with the gaming community with SLI, Nvidia 80 Series, and DX10. Nothing plays well.

    I spent 5k on my system in anticipation for Vista and BioShock in DX10 runs at 10 FPS. This is sad! I run it in DX9 in Vista I get 60FPS and in XP 90 FPS with max settings.

    I just hope that SP1 addresses these issues. From what I see it looks like it does since it mentions DX 10.1.Maybe after 8 months of gamers geting frusterated and complaining in god knows how many forums they have found the problem.

    Seeing Nvidias history with drivers I find it hard to believe that after 8 months they are having driver issues.

    Dont get me wrong I am not bagging on Vista or Microsoft. Lets just get it right so I am happy with my gaming rig, my customers are happy, and my end users are happy. If they are happy I am happy as I no longer have a headache.

    Please tell me these issues are being addressed!

    Please Nick (and MS Vista team), in the SP2 (or even SP1 if possible):

    1. Include the Internet Explorer program on the Desktop by default. Ordinary folk like that alot in XP;

    2. Include the "Up Folder Level" button. It's a nuisance having to use other ways to work around folders;

    Cheers

    Andrew from Adelaide in Australia

    There seems to be a widespread issue of windows 'hanging-up' during shut down or restart on the 'shutting down' screen. The indicator will be spinning, but it can remain on that screen for hours and require a manual shutdown. Is this issue addressed in SP1?

  8. Posted on: September 05, 2007 at 5:18PM

    Back in October, I purchased a new desktop and received the free Vista Premium upgrade through the mail-in rebate offer. I've held off upgrading my machine just for the simple fact that I kept hearing about others who had been having problems with Vista.

    I'm wondering if SP1 is going to fix all of the problems associated with Vista. I mean, I like the premise of Vista and it looks decent enough, but I've been holding off because of reported problems by other users.

    I would definitely like to see Microsoft fix the problem with Internet Explorer 7 because it seems to keep crashing on me with I have more than a few tabs open and I've resorted to using Firefox and Oopera as backup browsers.

    @ch46

    problem with divx is with all kind of movie formats (divx, xvid, wmv, h264 ...).

    i get error "invalid floating point operation" on all movie players used DirectShow filters. It looks like problem with new DirectX 10.1 from SP1. When i use players like VLC its play without problems. I thinked is something wrong with computer, but when i instaled SP1 on my second pc i get the same problem. Please note that all my pc's are have amd cpu and ati gpu.

    i havent checked this with intel/nvidia configuration yet.

  10. Posted on: September 08, 2007 at 12:48PM

    Please tell us that SP1 resolves issues with NVIDIA drivers!

    Based on the premise that NVIDIA was the developing thier hardware specifically for Vista, I figured I would avoid many of the "New OS Blues" by building a scratch system based on NVIDIA tech.

    It has an Intel 6600 2.4 Ghz Dual Core CPU, NVIDIA 680 SLI chipset, 4GB DDR2, and an Nvidia 8800 GTS SLI Video card, so it has a great performance index of 5.8!

    Problem is I keep having video(Nvidia in general?) related system freezes and slowdowns (Especially when running Windows DreamScene!)  PLEASE tell us you have fixed these issues...I would really like to use things like DreamScene without having to constantly restart DreamScene ... (Or have Explorer crash..)
