Sting! The biggest software counterfeiting bust in history

[This is a post originally penned by Alex Kochis over on the WGA blog.]

Earlier today the Chinese Public Security Bureau and the FBI announced the largest bust of counterfeit software manufacturing or distribution ever.  The bust took place in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong and includes arrests that took place over the last couple of weeks.  While the value of the software actually seized is estimated at about five hundred million dollars, we're estimating that the value of software produced and distributed over the last few years by this particular group is closer to two billion dollars.

Beyond the sheer size of the bust, the most exciting aspect for MS' WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) team is knowing that WGA played a role in it.  More than 1,000 customers in 12 different countries who had purchased counterfeits from this particular source used WGA to learn their software was counterfeit, submitted the counterfeits to Microsoft, and forensic and intelligence specialists then traced the counterfeits back to the criminal syndicate in China.  Windows customers using WGA actually helped bring down the biggest software counterfeiting operation in history, as without their help, it's possible that this piracy operation would never have been apprehended.

The goal of WGA goal is not to punish the people who purchased these programs -- they are in fact victims -- but rather to give them a tool that both lets them know they have been victimized and a way to do something about it.

A little cloak-and-dagger for your afternoon :).  The one on the left is the genuine article.

    About time!

Unfortunately, the benefits of WGA would not be reiterated by most of the news outlets as they report this story.

That being said, those counterfeiters seem to be getting better all the time, with holograms and such!

Are you sure, the one on the right is fake? I thought is was the contrary? I know MS has a page that compare fake with real, but do you have any tips on those type of super well done fake copies , for us to make sure we get the real thing?

To be honest both copies look legit, the only thing that looks fishy to me is that the one on the right looks like the white label isnt perfectly centered.

Darn it the guys who copy these things make some real authentic looking copies, so congrats on the bust :-) .  Makes me wonder if my discs are authentic because I think I would fall for that copy on the right.

12 different countries thats some distribution chain, no wonder the FBI was involved.

Hopefully Microsoft will send a thank you letter to those 1000+ end users who sent in these authentic looking but pirated discs.

Microsoft replaces disks that are illegal, but not obviously so with the geniune article, and charges the difference between the genuine cost and the amount you paid. This is lodged somewhere in the EULA of WGA I think.

Hmm it's a bit hard to compare the DVDs without being able to actually hold them up to the light and tilt them to see the holographic-ness...

But from this image alone it looks like it would fool anyone, if it's not a perfect replica.  So much for the sophisticated holograms. :(  But then again I didn't expect them to stop counterfeiters anyways.

Although it's a bit odd they don't figure out how to tweak the DVD install files so that WGA can't be installed or crashes or something... or maybe the counterfeiters who HAVEN'T been caught figured it out.  Hmm.

As a Windows user we all get tired of Windows Genuine Advantage validations. Turns out the investment Microsoft made in that may have shut down a counterfeit ring that has distributed more than 2 billion dollars of counterfeited software. The...
