New compatibility update for SD cards

On Tuesday 22 May June (!) we'll be publishing via Windows Update the final version of a compatibility update for Windows Vista to support new 8GB and larger Secure Digital (SD) cards.  Customers using this type of card for ReadyBoost or other purposes can receive this update via the usual automatic Windows Update method.  It will allow for full functionality of these newer SD cards on Windows Vista, and also improves support for SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) and SDIO (Secure Digital Input-Output) cards.

mervhob, you should read about the NT architecture:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architecture_of_Windows_NT

Also I remember that NT's architecture was based on VMS, a VAX OS because it's engineers came from DEC.

It is true that 9x and 3.x was not designed very well, however. Windows was originally designed as an operating environment that ran on top of DOS, not a full OS. However, over time it became more like an full OS.

The built-in SD card slot on my laptop transfers at half the speed of a USB SD card reader, under Windows Vista.

This wasn't the case when XP was installed.

The Vista SD card drivers blow.

Hey kev_gordon:  have you installed the SC card hotfix found here?  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936825/en-us.  Let me know if this does not resolve the situation and I'll look into the matter further.

    Hi,

I am facing a similar issue with my HP pavilion dv2224ea laptop with Vista home premium. It has a built in card reader which worked fine initially. But now it has stopped recognizing any SD cards. My Sd card shows up under "Disk drives" in Device manager with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. And also when I right click on it and go to Properties, it shows " This device can not start (code 10).

I have  tried updating drivers but to no avail .The HP tech support guy asked me to download the latest updates for the BIOS and the card reader. That didnt work either. Any suggestions please on what I could try to fix this isue?

    Thanks,

    Rupa

Hi, I have problems with my built-in SD/MS/XD card reader too (toshiba satellite pro u200):

    1) I have to insert card into the reader 2-3x till system detects it (MS Vista Business)...

    2) Speed of reading from any card is about aprox. 2MB/s (let's say it's okay, but...) speed of writing to card is about 100kb/s (before hotfix installation it was +- 2MB)

... is there any other (and finally working) fix?

    thx.

Hey fra.iesus: this blog isn't the best place for tech support -- you should instead direct your inquiry to the Windows Vista newsgroups:  http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx.

This update was automatically installed on my computer, but I still am not able to read my 2GB cards... Vista tells me my cards are not formatted.  I can read smaller cards just fine.  Any ideas?

Disregard last post.  Bought another USB 2.0 reader that works with the 2GB cards.  Why my other 2 readers don't work is a mystery, but at least I can use the cards now.
