Final iPod update is available via Download Center

Today we're publishing at the Microsoft Download Center a recommended final compatibility update for users of Windows Vista and the Apple iPod; this same update will be automatically available via Windows Update on Tuesday 22 May.  The release is for users worldwide and works with the latest version of Apple iTunes to correct an issue that caused some iPods to become corrupted when ejecting them using Windows Explorer or the "Safely Remove Hardware" function in the System Tray.

The long and short of it is this:  Apple and Windows have partnered together to ensure a great experience in using Windows Vista with iTunes and the iPod, and both companies recommend you download this update.

Got the fix for the "Scan and fix popup" that many are still seeing after installing the update.  Came from another forum.

When this happens, it means the "dirty bit", which is a flag set on the drive when something happened to make the OS believe there is corruption on it, is set. So all you need to do is pop open a command prompt and do a "chkdsk /f" on the drive. Most likely, it will find nothing wrong with the drive, take no action, and clear the dirty bit. Voila, problem solved.

I have vista ultimate and itunes 7.2 installed on my system. I have the latest MS patch for the nano issue. I'm still having the same problems. I plug in my 2nd generation nano and it locks up my itunes when I try to sync my tunes manually (after first getting the windows error about scanning and fixing the drive) Please help me.

The problem I am having is one I've spotted on tons of forums and blogs--synching PHOTOS. My tunes sync fine, but when my new pc running Vista tries to sync photos to the ipod, 1 of 2 things happens...either the pc crashes with a blue screen of death, or if by chance the sync completes, I only get 1 or 2 photos from each folder moved over, where there should be 25 or 30, and those few photos I do get are corrupted, with poor color, lines across the screen, or the top half of the photo shifted out of line with the bottom half, etc. I have the latest iTunes version. Help!

I have exactly the same problem.  I've just installed iTunes 7.3.1.3 and have had to resort to using it on my old XP machine by copying the photos and syncing from there - so it works on XP, but the process is a real pain.  I did read somewhere that the problem might be caused by SATA drives.  My Vista machine is SATA but the XP uses IEE - and it's an 80Gb iPod.  Any thoughts?

I have a Lenova 3000 Notebook with Windows Vista Premium.  I originally have difficulty downloading itunes, but was able to download it when they went to 7.2  However, I am now getting an error that says "ITunes has stopped workig. Windows is closing the program and will notify you if a solution becomes available"  I tried to reinstall the most recent itunes off the apple site. and at the very end of the installation I get a message from "Windows Installer" that reads "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"  I am the administrator.

    Can anyone help???

I think i may be able to answer a problem here about sync ipod photos on windows vista.

I have read that vista can only sync photos to ipod when they are BMP or TIFF, vista will not sync jpeg photos, which is usually the format photos are saved on computer. I had to change all my photoes to bmp by editing them in paint then saving as bmp, its a pain, but the only way I could do it. Hope they sort it out soon, Good luck.

Hey mikec2416:  have you looked at this KB article, as it may help?  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936648/en-us.  If it does not, I'd suggest you direct your question to the public newsgroups for assistance, as the people there are great at helping users resolve issues affecting Windows Vista:  http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx.  Hope this helps.

Hi There, I'm still struggling to connect my Ipod to Vista. I have Itunes, and I have the update that will safely allow me to remove my ipod. However whenever I plug the Ipod in, my computer asks for the disc to install the new hardware that it has detected. Except the Ipod's hardware is in it???

Hey Tina&Semi:  it sounds like for some reason the iTunes client did not correctly install; I'd try uninstalling it via the client itself or using the Programs and Features control panel.  If that doesn't work, you might try visiting the Windows Vista forums for assistance:  http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx.

    Hi Nick

Any ideas on the photos issue?  I really don't want to convert thousands of jpegs to bmp or tiff
