Final iPod update is available via Download Center

Today we're publishing at the Microsoft Download Center a recommended final compatibility update for users of Windows Vista and the Apple iPod; this same update will be automatically available via Windows Update on Tuesday 22 May.  The release is for users worldwide and works with the latest version of Apple iTunes to correct an issue that caused some iPods to become corrupted when ejecting them using Windows Explorer or the "Safely Remove Hardware" function in the System Tray.

The long and short of it is this:  Apple and Windows have partnered together to ensure a great experience in using Windows Vista with iTunes and the iPod, and both companies recommend you download this update.

hi nick. i don't know where else to turn. um, my ipod actually causes Vista to close explorer, the ati graphics control center AND the side bar. After Vista repeatedly tries to bring everything back up, i am greeted by the Blue Screen Of Death, which then causes the system to reboot. Now my iTunes database is corrupt, but my ipod works fine on its own. I've installed every update i can find that looks vaguely related to the problem, but to no avail.. Can you help me?

    Hello Nick,

Do I need to install this update through Windows Update if I do not own an Apple iPod?

    Hi there,

I am having problems with my ipod, but not with safely remove hardware. What happens is, whenever i plug in my ipod and itunes is running, the svchost.exe that hosts DComLaunch and Plugplay goes nuts, eating up all my cycles and locking my cpu in a vicious computational circle of death. Not frozen, just really slow. Itunes stops responding, so I don't even get a chance to eject the ipod.

Naturally, ending dcomlaunch makes my computer restart. I am really at a loss of what to do. I can't update my music, I can't get my pictures onto my reformatted (for vista) hardrive, I'm stuck! The strange part is that it only locks up if itunes and ipodservice.exe are running. If they aren't, it works fine.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Stevesy

I am also unable to sync my 5G ipod.  Brand new laptop running Vista Home Prem, iTunes 7.1.1 & latest updates for both.  Syncing attempt results in blue screen.  I've had the pc since early April and have yet to accomplish a successful sync/data transfer.  After exhaustive searches of both manufacturers site's, it appears that both MS and Apple acknowledge compatibility issues, but both report that the latest updates resolve these issues.  From a consumer standpoint, being unable to use my ipod with Vista is frustrating; however, to pretend like the problem doesn't exist/has been resolved is maddening.

Hey Kristan Kenney:  no, this update would not apply to you.

I have all the latest updates for both ITunes and Vista. I still get the "Do you want to scan and fix" message when I connect my ipod video. I had been clicking yes (before I knew better). Lots of problems, always the same 64k "fixed" in the details section of the scan results, and then weird problems including continuous ipod hard drive spinning. I restored Ipod and now seems to be working fine, but still get the " do you want to scan and fix" message.

I'm still having an issue with Vista that the recent flurry of updates (both from Microsoft and Apple) haven't been able to fix. If I'm playing songs in iTunes, it works almost perfectly. However, if I pause iTunes and let it sit for more than 5 minutes or so, then when I return to the program there will be funky display issues, that cause iTunes to look all chunky, almost like a webpage with a broken style sheet. This also causes several functions of the program to be unusuable, and the only way to fix it is to CTRL+ALT+DEL, kill the program, and restart it. Please tell me someone is going to fix this!

Hey kbell, stevesy, ftracy3 and DanAbnrml9:  The issues you mention look unrelated to the fix discussed in this post.  I’d recommend you contact either Apple or MS product support, as appropriate, to have them investigate these problems.

    Hi Nick,

I have Vista Ultimate (on a Dell XPS M2010)

Every time I add a folder or run a sync on my itunes it causes my pc to hang, which causes a raid hard drive error. I then have to reset my Raid HD's status to normal. ITunes will then eventually complete it's sync but it's very slow.

Has anyone else had this problem?

    Ger

The Windows Vista team has been working very closely with Apple to fix a problem whereby iPod's data becomes corrupt when you eject your iPod. Wow, Microsoft working closely with their arch rival to fix a bug? Considering Microsoft...
