Final iPod update is available via Download Center

Today we're publishing at the Microsoft Download Center a recommended final compatibility update for users of Windows Vista and the Apple iPod; this same update will be automatically available via Windows Update on Tuesday 22 May.  The release is for users worldwide and works with the latest version of Apple iTunes to correct an issue that caused some iPods to become corrupted when ejecting them using Windows Explorer or the "Safely Remove Hardware" function in the System Tray.

The long and short of it is this:  Apple and Windows have partnered together to ensure a great experience in using Windows Vista with iTunes and the iPod, and both companies recommend you download this update.

    Heh...

I'm sure the irony was not lost on people that the "Safely Remove Hardware" function in Windows corrupted the connected hardware.

    :-p

The issue with the iTunes upgrade for the iPod

is making good progress toward iTunes compatibility with Windows VISTA, however

there are significant video skipping issues

that have yet to be addressed by Apple and/or

    Microsoft.

Hey Nick - Saw your post about multiple monitors using vista. It said you need two PCI express x16 slots. Is there any way to run 4 monitors with only one PCI express x16 and two regular PCI slots? I have two running and I can't seem to find the right card to fit a regular PCI slot to run two more. Any ideas?

Will someone (MS or Apple) planning to fix also the compatibility issue that is affecting developers using VS2005 and playing music with iTunes?

    Here I wrote about it:

Unfortunately the 936824 patch did not resolve the "Do you want to scan and fix" pop-up I get from Vista whenever clicking on my iPod Shuffle from within iTunes. I am using the latest iTunes (7.1.1), latest Shuffle software (1.02), 936824 is installed and the PC rebooted after installing it. That issue still reproduces 100% of the time. The one time I accidently clicked "Scan and fix (recommended)" instead of "Continue without scanning", I ended up having to completely reset the Shuffle to bring it back to life.

Hey simonech:  I've passed your feedback along to our product group for their information and they'll see what can be done about it.  Thanks for sending it along.

Nick: The VS debugger team should already be aware of the problem, but don't know if it's a problem with MS or iTunes. Probably iTunes... maybe it's better if you can pass it to the Apple team that is managing iTunes :)

After 3 months of my Ipod being corrupted and Vista occasionally crashing, I was relieved to find the 'final' fix for Itunes/Ipod is now available.

After installation of the patch Vista now crashes consistently every time I plug in my Ipod (3 out of 3 times).

I'm going to uninstall the update now.  At least Vista only crashed sometimes before the update.

    I'm getting a Mac!

Hey ipod_still_not_working:  sorry to hear of your troubles.  You'll note that this fix is also scheduled for availability via Windows Update later in the month, so you might consider uninstalling it and then re-installing it when prompted to do so by Windows Update.

Hey craig123:  it sounds like the issue you're having will not be resolved with the patch specified in this post.  We're going to look into the issue you reported, so thanks for the feedback.

The Windows Vista team has been working very closely with Apple to fix a problem whereby iPod's data becomes corrupt when you eject your iPod. Wow, Microsoft working closely with their arch rival to fix a bug? Considering Microsoft...
