Check out the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool

Are you a home user network who's unsure whether your current internet router is capable of supporting some of Windows Vista's advanced networking features?  Not to worry:  the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool is here to help you out.

The Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool is designed to be run on your home network behind a home internet router (NAT).  It runs a series of tests that will let you know if certain advanced features in Windows Vista will be supported behind your current router.  If the tests show your router does not support the advanced networking features in Windows Vista, they'll further help you by giving you a better understanding of what features to look for when purchasing a new router that will take full advantage of Windows Vista.

The Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool runs the following set of tests on your router:

  • Basic Internet Connectivity Test
  • Network Address Translator Type
  • Traffic Congestion Test
  • TCP High Performance Test
  • UPnP Support Test
  • Multiple Simultaneous Connection States Test

At the end of the test, you can get a detailed report of the test's findings.  If your router doesn't pass the tests, the site gives you recommendations on other routers that are Certified for Windows Vista.  Give it a try and see how your current hardware stacks up.

Nick, I just wanted to express my disappointment in my recent user experience with Windows Vista Home Premium.  I had purchased a new HP Pavillon Desk top and received my 'upgrade' CD in the mail. I really liked the new look & feel. For the first week or so everything seemed fine, but then several error messages kept popping up and which HP support kept trying to solve.  Eventually the entire machine was "shut down", all icons were disabled. My wife was so frustrated over the last two weeks. Finally, HP advised that I go back to XP. (This was after approximately 20 hours on the phone working through various support issues, finally making it their most critical support organization. Fortunately, XP is working fine, but unfortunately my wife seems forever lost as she was upset with the amount of time I had to spend. A couple of things I will mention that may have helped cause the problem.  I am still on Office 2002 so we had attempted to use Outlook. We were told that wasn't compatible, so we tried using Windows mail. I was successuful in downloading my contacts, etc., but I have to say it did not work well, there were delays with sends / receives and persistent issues with it "hanging" and having to ctrl/alt/Del to get out of it.  I did have Norton Antivirus' new version installed so do not believe that this was a virus issue; the HP Senior support agreed.  I wish it would have worked, but it actually completely  crashed my machine, I had data loss, which created marital friction, so there you have it.  I spent nearly $1000 on this new HP with 19' Samsugn monitor and new printer, dual core AMD processor, 1 gig RAM etc., so I figured it was plenty of machine.  Feel free to call me if you would like to discuss. Initial reaction was positive, but the product did not perform.

    Best of Luck,

Hey Chris Macrorie:  sorry to hear you had such trouble with your installation; you may find assistance more readily available via the public newsgroups dedicated to Windows Vista.  You should note that the HP support staff was incorrect in saying that Office XP (2002) is unsupported on Windows Vista, per this KB article:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932087/en-us.  I hope you have a better experience in the future.

I'm sorry I probably have the wrong way to ask you this. I just bought a hp with vista installed. I am having tremendous trouble with my internet connection to hughes satellite. I keep getting dropped. I also can be say opening email and try to continue on another site ie to track shipping from the email site and it won't connect and the whole connection drops. It tries to reconnect and tries to dial on my connection. I called hughes and everything works on their side. I also immediately connected to my laptop and it works fine. Help, Nancy
