(Not) an update on SP1

A HotFix.net blogger today posted a collection of individual Windows Vista hotfixes as a supposed Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) preview.  However, those of you who've been closely following discussions on Windows Vista will quickly notice that what is posted consists of some material already available on Windows Update and some hotfixes that we give out on a case-by-case basis, along with a lot of speculation about what may and may not be included in SP1.

Looking at the site, it seems to me the blogger compiled a list of previous mentions of SP1 (purely conjectural, and already discussed in other blogs) stitched together with another list of "hotfixes" mentioned in various KB (Knowledge Base) articles (again, already posted on our web site).  You probably already know that we create and release hotfixes on a regular basis for very specific customer scenarios or for OEM-shipped machines, and that it's standard policy that all hotfixes are rolled into the next service pack release.  However, a service pack is not just a compilation of hotfixes and security updates, so don't make the mistake of thinking that the set of fixes offered in this particular blogger's list represents a preview of the service pack itself.

It's worth mentioning that hotfixes not posted on Windows Update are not intended for individual installation unless the user is experiencing the specific symptoms mentioned in the corresponding KB article.  These hotfixes represent specific fixes for specific customer scenarios and typically have not undergone full regression testing.  When they are integrated into a future service pack, they will receive full regression testing and beta testing.  So, installing a collection of unnecessary hotfixes may cause more problems than are fixed.

The bottom line is that unless you have encountered the specific situation described in a given KB, you'll get everything you need from Windows Update.

Final comment:  I'm not here to discuss SP1 on this blog, so please refrain from posting your questions on it in the Comments section.  Windows Vista is a product that's both deep and wide and we on this blog intend to continue to delve into it while sharing with you the story of its creation.  When the time comes to discuss other releases, you can be sure that we'll have plenty to say right here.

Sorry to here about your troubles Disapointed.

Vista does take some getting used to, If your expensive software no longer works then I would write to the software vendor to complain.  For recent software they may be working on patches/updates, or they may offer you a discount for upgrading to a vista compatible version.  As always it doesnt hurt to ask.

You should also check to make sure that you dont have any downgrade rights to XP, some OEM licenses allow this... although I cant understand all the terms on the Microsoft website I just visited... far to technical for me to understand fully.  Downgrade rights allow you to run for example XP Pro in the place of Vista Bussiness if you have bought Vista Bussiness.  It seems kinda complicated though so Im not sure if you'ld qualify but it may stop you having to buy a new copy of XP or returning your new computer.

You may also be better just tweaking vistas users interface a little rather than taking your new PC back less colour etc, turn off Aero.  Also sometimes a new PC is slow due to all the bundled software that OEMs shove on them like Vongo, Quicktime, etc... uninstalling all this extra stuff, or simply stopping this stuff running at startup can make a world of difference on XP or Vista.

I thought ME was pretty good myself, no worse than 98SE to me, however it got a bad wrap as everyone using Windows 2000 new they were running a better system.  Still as a home user I liked ME as it added my fave Windows feature "System Restore",... at least in my experience I liked it.... anyway each to there own.

Vista is the epitome of MS evil.  I will never install it on my computer.  Tear MS down and let the little guys survive!

Vista's release is troubling at best. SLOW and Intrusive are the first words that come to mind. A performance nightmare. Laptop users would be fools to even try Vista. Power users have to be rich to install a 250 OS that requires you to pay for upgrades.

You have to replace hardware cause many drivers dont work. You have to pay for upgrades cause many applications dont work and lets not forget the time you had spend to get the privilege to install a slow OS. Makes total sense!

This doesn't even start to talk about usability. Popup city! Start your applications have it ask are you sure.

Is that helpful to the productivity of a user?

This is the worst OS release I have seen ever.

It has no reason for being. If you want a OS with pretty picture interface get the Wintel version of the MAC. There is even a free Java interface that has much of the Vista look.

Its probably just as slow but you got Vista so who cares about speed.

Plus the idea that the OS MUST phone home or it will disable features... That makes me ask if I actually bought this OS anyway.

What has happened is MS has become the OLD IBM.

The IBM who charged for everything and gave you nothing.

I don't know what else to say except a monopoly with so much money, power and personal to make something like this is pathetic.

You have all become Yes men to earn a check. You developed what Yes men do, HYPE with no substance.

Vista worst OS MS has ever produced.

It is so pathetic that after 20 years of programming on a PC I am buying a Mac

this year and learn to code on the Mac OS.

Though no one will care maybe someone will read this and understand how strong my dislike for this OS is.

Been using and programming PC's since DOS 3.x and never been so disappointed.

Instead of paying for all those upgrades to work with a 250 Vista OS just buy a Mac I am.

Vista is an amazing product. I have it running on all my systems and have had zero issues. Maybe you people need to learn how to use a computer. Vista runs flawlessly and Microsoft did a wonderful job designing this powerful product! Keep up the great work Microsoft! Kudos to all the wonderful employees for working so hard to stay the best!

    Hey Nick,

I have a question for you.

I am running Vista Ultimate and I think it has me saying "Wow" but I have one minor problem.

When you have multiple windows up and you highlight one on the taskbar it is supposed to give you a live preview of what's in that window. For me I have to have that window open for it to give me a live preview. For example, lets say I am watching a movie and checking my email. If I am checking my email and I put my mouse over the tab with my movie in it, it only gives me a still shot. It does the same thing even if I go into 3D flip. It only shows me the moving picture if I have the window open in front of me. Which defeats the purpose of having a live preview, if you know what I mean.

If anyone else has this problem or has a fix for this please reply.

    Thanks,

    Dom

    Hey,

Is there a method for reporting bugs in Vista to MS?

    Andy.

Hey Andy McKnight:  drop me a email and I'll make sure it gets to the right team.

I just got Vista Home Premium and overall, it is fine. I would just like to know when a real service pack will be ready. My issue is with Windows mail. It has a mind of it's own, working when it wants to. An incoming email I deleted landed in the Outbox. I cannot delete it. I can not send mail. When i close Mail, it asks if I want to send the mail. I click yes, and close. It never gets sent. It locked up  for 6 days, then myseriously, worked fine for a few days, now won't send. Is there a fix?
