New Search Add-on for Windows Vista: Start++

Brandon Paddock, who works on Search on the Windows dev team, took some time away from the office to develop a very useful add-on to Windows Vista’s already amazing search capabilities.  In Windows Desktop Search for Windows XP, there was a functionality called “Deskbar Shortcuts” that allowed you to associate words and phrases with commands or searches you executed on a regular basis.  Brandon has brought that functionality to Windows Vista with his Start++ tool.

For instance, using Start++, Windows Vista’s Start Menu Search Bar becomes an internet search tool wherein you input pre-assigned keywords or phrases and your search terms, then have it conduct a search using engines like Wikipedia, Live Search, or even the Internet Movie Database.  I can configure Start++ so that when I type “w Windows Vista” into the Start Menu Search Bar when Start++ is running,  it will open up a browser window in Wikipedia with the search results for “Windows Vista”.

Start++ can also serve as a command line interface to open specific applications or perform other tasks.  For example, you might use it to initiate playback of specific songs or artists in Windows Media Player.  I can configure it so that typing “play switchfoot” puts all corresponding tracks on my system into an .m3u playlist and opens Windows Media Player with the tracks ready for playback.

Start++ comes with a configuration guide to that to get you started customizing it.  You can of course can add your own shortcuts and commands as well.

    Nick,

You seem to be the resident expert for Vista. I am new to blogging (BTW).

Bought a new Toshiba Satellite with Vista. At first glance while setting up, I was inpressed. But now I am challenges by continuous firewall issues that I can't seem to solve. I have tried all the setup soltions, on/off windows or McAfee protections. Some sites I can go to w/o a problem.

Other sites, such as GoDaddy, where I have POP3 account (email). So setting  up Outlook to actually work is impossible. I have several POP3 accounts, but GoDaddy doens't work. How can I tell my multiple firewalls to let this IP address in/out?

I have tried on several different ISPs, LAN and wireles, still to no avail.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Greg

    Nice site promotion Petar ;-)

Brandon has made several updates to Start++ since it came out, so mentioning it now is just as good as mentioning it then. Looks like he has some more updates up his sleeve too.

I like this tool if only for the "sudo" command, although it doesn't work with cmd.exe internal commands. :(

Anyways it seems to not work properly if explorer is restarted until you reboot. :(  Maybe it was just a fluke; not sure.

    Woops. Let's try that again....

I just read about this yesterday on Computerworld.com. I did a web search on it and found it all over the place including on Lifehacker as a "Download of the Day".

    You're a bit late guys. :-)

Honestly, I can't see how you can be so excited about this feature, like it was something new and great. My first thought was: "finally". Don't take this as an another anti Vista comment, but for me this just seems to be yet another feature that has been available and in use in other non-mainstream OS:s for ages!
