Understanding RAW Image Support in Windows Vista

We've posted on Windows Photo Gallery before, but I've been noticing a great deal of questions regarding RAW image support in Windows Vista here on the blog, so it's time to give this specific issue a bit more airtime.

For  RAW image support in Windows Vista, Microsoft is working with major camera manufacturers to help provide RAW image codecs for their respective formats so that you can view them in Windows Photo Gallery.  As a matter a fact, several of those major camera manufacturers have already provided codecs for their RAW imaging formats:

  • Nikon (.NEF files)
  • Sony (.SRF and .SR2 files)
  • Olympus (.ORF files)

Windows Photo Gallery has a "check for updates" feature that will kick in when any of the above file formats are discovered.  Photo Gallery will prompt you for a update that will enable the use of these RAW Image formats from these manufacturers.  More codecs are expected to come online and will be available via Photo Gallery's update feature, just as these are today.  With respect to the Nikon files, there are apparently compatibility issues that both Microsoft and Nikon are actively investigating, with Nikon hoping to issue a updated codec in the near future.

The Photos and Imaging Experience Team explains the overall idea behind RAW format support in Windows Vista much better than I can (and far more in depth) in this post.

If you're experiencing issues with any of the released RAW image codecs or Photo Gallery, head over to the Microsoft Photography Blog and leave feedback there for the team, as they are actively reading comments and responding to users' needs.

Nick, I'm so glad you all took the time to post this! I made mention of this back when I met you during the Bus tour and have since had troubles with the Nikon codecs myself. Thanks for sharing the info on the Microsoft Photography Blog, seem the team and Nikon are already working on a fix for the .NEF image loss.

PS. I haven't forgot about the Parental Controls stuff. I hope you received my email a few weeks back.

No Nikon RAW codec available. Welcome to the 21st century! So it looks like the collaboration was useless. What a shame..

Thanks for the update, Hopefully Canon will get off the ground and provide a .cr2 codec.

tino, not sure what you mean but "No Nikon RAW codec available" as there is one available - as discussed in the very post you commented on. However there are some minor bugs in the first release of the codec that both Microsoft and Nikon and working to fix.

    Hi Nick,

I have a question for you, I have a olympus evolt 500 and when I downloaded the software I also downloaded the codecs for oltmpus raw for vista. However I just aquired photoshop cs2 but I can't open the raw files with that, just my olympus software. What do I need to do to fix this problem? When I view the thumbnails it shows the raw images as orf files but won't or can't open them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely

    Chuck A. (aka puckster55pics)

Chuck, the problem with being unable to open Olympus's RAW files (.orf) is a problem with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and nothing Nick or Microsoft can do. Adobe needs to essentially work with Olympus to provide support for their RAW files or Olympus needs to perhaps write a add-on of some kind for Photoshop to see and edit those RAW files. Microsoft has no say in what file formats Adobe supports in Photoshop.

Bummer that it looks like more thought was put into the background of your blog than the RAW Support in Vista.  And to think I read articles on how "Pro Photog Friendly Win Vista is"  The only reason I purchased a new Laptop With Vista.

Raw Support and other issues Ive had with Vista here:<a href="http://www.sdphotoforum.com/digital-camera/showthread.php?t=411&highlight=vista" title="San Diego Wedding Photographer" target="_blank">San Diego Photo Forum</a>

Hmmm, the link your provided doesn't really offer much in regards to problems outside stuff designed for XP like the RAW Thumbnail Viewing not working.

Not to sound like a jerk but perhaps you should try reading this post as it talks about the supports RAW image formats and how to make them work with Vista. I've gotten my Nikon RAW images to work extremely well in Vista and without any trouble at all.

It is my understanding that the problem with Vista and RAW files is that Vista interprets RAW file metadata as a virus and deletes it quicker than you can say Nikon. Since hearing this I have gone to Canon and found downloads that apparently address, and hopefully corrects, this issue. I tried to download this into my Win XP Media Center laptop, in advance of transferring Lightroom and PSCS2 into a new Vista desktop, and was not allowed to do so. I was advised that this patch would only work with Vista. So now there might be hope, and a solution, for us Canon guys at the Canon web site. Cannot confirm this potentially great news but for those of you who use Vista and Canon and RAW files, head there and... good luck. If any of you RAW shooters have any more recent info regrding this huge problem please post it. Thanks.
