Retail launch at Midtown Manhattan Best Buy

We had the chance yesterday morning to drop by the Midtown Manhattan Best Buy store to see Steve Ballmer and Best Buy CEO Brad Anderson, along with the Mason family from the Living with Windows Vista program, celebrate the launch of Windows Vista.  Here, Cassidy Mason shows Steve how the family used Windows Media Center to record TV shows for playback at a later time.

Along the way, I got the chance to meet Greg de los Santos, the Midtown store's first salesperson to sell a copy of Windows Vista early Tuesday morning.  After chatting with Greg for a moment (he sure knows his way around the OS), we gave him a small reward for his efforts -- a copy of his choice of versions of Windows Vista.  After vacillating for some time over whether to pick the Bill Gates limited-edition signature copy of the Ultimate upgrade version, he settled on the full version of Ultimate and bounded up the stairs to complete the purchase.

Greg waits in anticipation as we check out.

When I announced to Greg and his management that he was to be awarded his choice of versions of Windows Vista, he literally fell to his knees, made double fists as if in exultation (or serious pain), and yelled "Thank you!  Thank you!"  Needless to say, it was great to see such excitement :)

A big thank-you to Greg for his enthusiasm for Windows Vista, and to his store's management for producing such passionate salespeople!

There are more Best Buy employees and camera crews and journalists there than actual people wanting to buy Vista. I heard from a CA store that they had hundreds of copies of Vista in stock and only sold less than 20.

    Thats bad!

Diego: Anybody who really wanted Vista could have downloaded it ages ago and used it for 30 days (in fast 120 days with a bit of command-line fu) without entering a product key. Then after launch, they can buy a key online.

Then there was the watch-three-webcasts offer and a few other offers which seemed to be *designed* to reduce the buzz on launch day. (Or maybe that's just with hindsight...)

    Hi Nick,

I downloaded a copy of RC1, details of which I can provide later. I spent some time on the phone trying to get these details to you. However, I ran out of time as I got past from switchboard to switchboard.

I tested the release at home in a VM, and then I've built a machine at work, and tried two Nic cards.

Any time we plug this in, its crashing our test switch. The switch type is a widely used HP model HP 4108GL

Therefore, if its of interest to your team, you have my email, I'd like to pass on the details, so people are aware. You may well have fixed or seen the problem already, and if so, no problem.

    Kind Regards

    Darren

Hey AdmV0rl0n:  I'd suggest upggrading to the retail RTM before arriving at the conclusion that this still exists as a problem.  If that is the case, however, you're better off seeking tech support from our newsgroups, as opposed to on this blog.  Best of luck.

Best Buy usually has some really helpful employees, although you occassionally do get a bad apple.  Just signed up for ATT DSL at BestBuy this week, I always change providers every 6-12months to keep costs down.

Apparently Vista was selling well with the free 512mb Memory + OneCare bundle free with vista.  They were all out of Bill Gates edition and one other edition when I went to my local store!
