Welcome to The Windows Blog

Windows Vista Coach Tour: Always on the run

Hi everyone!  We've had a busy, busy couple of days -- we've put a lot of miles behind us, eaten in countless restaurants (while trying to avoid fast food), slept in different beds each night, and most importantly, met a ton of customers.  We're answering questions ranging from "what's Windows Vista?" to "what's your favorite feature?" to "what are the advances in networking that will ensure my home network is secure?"  In fact, one of our guys has created a list of recurring topics that customers continue to hit upon.

Our routing has taken us from Lexington, KY on Wednesday morning through parts of Ohio and into Pittsburgh, PA last evening.  We've since made it to the outskirts of Washington, DC tonight and are preparing for another very active day tomorrow.  Our routing should take us toward Richmond, VA tomorrow evening and Charlotte, NC the following day.

I didn't have the opportunity to post an update last night, so I'll provide you a short recap of our trip this far, with a few captions so you can identify whether we've already swung through your neck of the woods.  (It gets hard to remember where we are, where we've just been and we're headed.  Luckily, we have a professional driver to take care of those "little details" for us ;).

Here we are in Nashville getting ready to board the coach for our great adventure (L-R are Brandon LeBlanc, Ryan Hoffman and me).

Setting out

Another shot of our rig in Nashville, right before we set off:

After that photo session we climbed aboard to inspect our new surroundings, plug in the Xbox 360, settle into one of those comfy leather recliners and dig into the wireless internet.  This is going to be home during our waking hours for the next week+.

Bring on the customers!

Wednesday afternoon we made our way to Ohio State University but ran into a few roadblocks (literally) and had to beat it off campus -- there simply was nowhere for us to park, even for a moment.

This is us in action in the heartland (Ohio), wrapping up a multi-system demo while trying to stay out of the cold :)

Meeting customers in Ohio

This morning in Pittsburgh we dropped by a local Best Buy for a gadget-fix and chatted with all sorts of customers, including employees wanting to ask us in-depth questions about the upgrading process.  We even gave away a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate to a father and son duo who'd just bought a new computer!  The father said that we'd "just made his week."  It was our pleasure :)

Chatting w/ customers in Pittsburgh

Here's a shot of our bus as we arrived in tech Mecca:

And while in Pittsburgh, Bob Stein of ActiveWin dropped by to keep us company and help answer customers' questions -- which is a lucky thing, because we were inundated with people curious about MS' new operating system.

Thanks for the help, Bob!

As I said, tonight we're right outside the nation's capital and will make our foray into the city in the morning to meet more customers and perhaps even capture a few shots of our coach in front of the more recognizable monuments -- if we can stop traffic for long enough, that is (just kidding!).

More news tomorrow from DC and points beyond ... be sure to keep track of our position via the gadget!

I'm glad to see you'll be stopping in Gainesville. I see Gainesville listed twice.  Is that G'ville FL or G'ville GA?  Where will you be stopping when you get there?  Where will you be stopping in Orlando. VIsta is awesome, I participated in the CPP and I can't wait to run Ultimate RTM.

Where will you be in Charlotte?  I'm in Wilkesboro and would like to see a live demo.

I'll give Dave Sanders of Culminis.com a heads-up that you're in the area... I'll bet he's got a group of Vista-ites who would truly dig this setup! Lots of IT Pros on the Eastern Seaboard from DC to Savanna.

    See yalls in Nashville!

Hmmm either the Wildhorse or Opry Mills... or the Galleria? Which will it be, or perhaps all of em'.

I'm fairly disappointed about this whole thing.  I was looking forward to the East Coast gettings some love from MS for a change, but you've skipped at least two of your planned cities so far (Philly and Baltimore) and you can't even give us any idea where you are going to be ahead of time.  So far it's a random Best Buy and not even because you planned it, but for "a gadget-fix."  I think MS should be quite disappointed as well.  Seems like you're all just enjoying a joyride on MS' dime.  But, I could be completely wrong since I haven't seen what you're actually doing.

Yeah, I wish we knew where the team was stopping in advance.  I'd love to catch you guys while you stop in Orlando.  Are you planning on stopping by UCF?

    {someone cue the lights and get me some heart moving music on Pandora please}

Man I was soo bummed that I missed you guys in Columbus. I saw the bus was at OSU so I rushed to get my work to a stopping point to head down. Just before heading out to say howdy I checked the gadget again and saw that the bus was now at Easton. 5 minutes from my house but 25 minutes across town from my office. With class less than an hour away I called my brother-in-law who works across the street to see if he could run over to at least get a photo. Alas the bus was moving again towards The Paris of Appalachia.

    {OK kill the music and bring me some cheese}

They do have the google widget on the main page - you can use it to see what's up...

But knowing where yall are stopping is a biggie. I've asked the Eastern Seaboard through SE MVPs to lend a hand at suggesting places to stop - and when I've asked them they will. You should instead of fussing, ask them to stop someplace significant using this blog... Mike's reading it you know.

Perhaps Mike can impromptu using Outlook 2007 put together a list to email stops as they occur... impromptu.

Ok, put me in the list: dan@wygant.org (I already get so much spam on my email I don't care if the robots crawl this site and pick me off - I have good spam tools in my outlook!^)

I would have suggested a place to stop in Baltimore, but I could see that they had already decided to bypass it and Philly as they dropped south right after they got through the mountains in Western MD.

I wish my company was making something like this when we release new software

My suggestions for places to stop in Gainesville, Florida.

Shands Hospital has an administrative building #1329, with about 1000 people in the building addressed below about 200 to 300 with IT related jobs which includes Shands Information Services, of about 150 people.  You can expect about 40 people to attend the presentation during the time you are here. If you can swing by Monday that would be cool.  The location is also really close to the University of Florida.

    1329 SW 16th Street

Gainesville, FL 32610  (Security knows there's a chance you're coming)

Best Buy, is really close to the interstate and has ample parking.

The Oaks mall by Sears or JC Penny's, are  also near the interstate and have plenty of parking.
