Welcome to The Windows Blog

An update on Zune compatibility

Our friend Cesar Menendez from the Zune Insider has posted that the Zune Team will be releasing updated PC software and device firmware today at 10am PDT.  You can grab the updated software from Zune.net at that point.  Once you have the new software installed, you should be able to update the firmware on your Zune to version 1.2.

Originally, the Zune Team planned to make this Windows Vista-compatible software available around the same time Windows Vista would be available to the general public (i.e., 30 Jan).  It looks like they were able to beat the clock, and just in time for the holidays :)

I apologize for posting this here, but was not sure where else to ask the question.  I have been a beta tester through beta 1, beta 2, rc1 and rc2 and have sent in various bug reports but did not recieve a copy of Vista like many of the other beta testers.  Are they still sending them?  Should I have already recieved it?

    Thanks for your help!

You should have already recieved it by now. Unfortunately folks like Nick (who runs this blog) have nothing to do with the Windows Vista Technical Beta Program hosted on Microsoft Connect. That program was ran by a seperate group of folks at Microsoft.

Let me see if I can get a answer for you though. No promises.

Nice to have the update before Vista launches, it's a shame the Zune is such a poor product...

I wanted a Zune until I heard it wouldn't be Vista compatible. This is good news.

Please go over to engadget and read their story on this. i really hope the team are taking stock of user experience.

Yeah, but aren't we missing something here?  Is Zune compatible with Urge or not?  I don't see any information regarding this.

Sephiroth, like Apple's iTunes and iPod relationship - Zune is only compatible with its own online music store. URGE is NOT compatible with the Zune. So no, nothing is being missed here.

I suggest reading some of the FAQ's over at Zune.net:

    http://www.zune.net/en-US/support/

Bazanime, the Zune Team is indeed taking note of the user experience issues. Today is just one update but the future holds a whole lot more from Zune.

Okay, so let me see if this makes sense.  Forgive me for shooting from the hips here.  Alright, URGE was a collaboration with Microsoft, Microsoft’s Windows Media Player 11 and MTV Networks.

Then Microsoft comes out with Zune to compete with Apple’s iTunes and iPod, right?

But then Microsoft may have forgotten that there are tens of thousands of URGE users who probably may want to keep their subscription with URGE and may want to invest in a Zune, but URGE users won’t have that opportunity because Microsoft’s Zune is incompatible, right?

That’s really great Microsoft, really great!

So yeah…I think you guys really missed something here.  Sounds like a huge marketing flip-flop to me.
