Announcing New Packaging for Windows Vista and 2007 Office System

With Windows Vista and 2007 Office system, we didn't just redesign the software packages themselves, but are also introducing new packaging for the two products.  The packaging has been completely revised and, we hope, foreshadows the great experience that awaits you once you open it.  Check out the photos below.

Windows Vista Home Basic

2007 Office Professional

2007 Office – Home & Student

Designed to be user-friendly, the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that’s designed to protect the software inside for life-long use.  It provides a convenient and attractive place for you to permanently store both discs and documentation.

The new design will provide the strength, dimensional stability and impact resistance required when packaging software today.  Our plan is to extend this packaging style to other Microsoft products after the launch of Windows Vista and 2007 Office system.

Wow Great Packaging, the packaging itself is an incentive to buy. Nevertheless I will not be buying this, certainly not in the next 5 years as I cannot afford it, maybe crack it and buy it later like I did with XP, but then again I'd need to upgrade my pc heard Vista is a pig at draining pc resources, so don't worry hardware cannot be cracked therefore will not be buying at all :*(

Anyway on to what I think about it!

The Ultimate Vista with that *exclusive black* is a Great Design!

XP is great, but has problems that Vista did not solve, Vista goes by its name..the difference is mostly visual.

And by making such a Fancy Package doesn't one think its harmful to microsoft to subtly position Vista as a mere Visual Upgrade?

Marketingly speaking in terms of Place, Product, Price and Promotion, things are not going as bad as I predicted.

I suggest instead of a Product line with 4-5 products that are very similar in function, but vary in Price is not feasable and confusing to the Average Joe, its also a techno-phobes nightmare.

I suggest a product line of 3 OS Ultimate/Regular and something Microsoft did not bother thinking of.. an Internet-Cafe Vista.

The Place/Promotion is no problem at all, this is Microsoft Available anywhere, Packaging has been taking care of apart from the positioning in the consumers minds.

Price is a Big Problem, software is not highly valued in Consumer Minds, as software is like fantasy its not tangible nor a service its Part of what should have came with PC.

So I ask what is the point of creating such complex algorithms and Resource-hogging software that is very expensive to sell?

Ultimate last i heard was just under $500.

My Opinion is that if one wants to market a whole market, one must primarily target the Middle-Class and launch more Exclusive products later on for Snob-Class.

Yeah I just love that Microsoft Video for MS Ipod Packaging Parody

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=36099539665548298

Apparently the video was made by Microsoft.  Its very funny.  I guess we will find out if Microsofts packaging has changed much when we get to see the back of the boxes!

Personally I think it was Sony who lost out more to Apple with the Ipod, remmeber the walkman, nah... ah well!

    Release release release already! ;)

I just got my laptop back from Gateway, time to install a new OS, but I really want to install Vista as a release version!

With all the efforts most companies are making into environmentally-friendly packaging, I can safely say this packaging is going to look stupid on the shelves next to the DVD-sized casing everyone else is using.

  5. Posted on: November 01, 2006 at 1:09PM

Well, this would be easier with rich formatting, but...

    Why is it:

    WINDOWS Vista

    -Product Version-

    Microsoft

    OFFICE -PRODUCT VERSION- 2007

    Surely it should be:

    OFFICE 2007

    -Product Version-

    or

    OFFICE

    -Product Version- 2007

Oh, well.  I won't see consumer packaging anyway.

The environmental costs of this concern me far more than I am "turned on" by packaging, which at the end of the day is just a box.

I know some types of plastic _can_ be recycled, but can this box? It's down to the user to do anyway, and with recycling rates in the USA so low anyway, there is just as much likelyhood it will simply end up in landfill.

I'd be delighted if Microsoft would provide environmental information regarding this design. Especially concerning the manufacturing process, and guidelines to users regarding recycling.

i have to say, the dvd disk look awesome, the box, cool, the aero glass perfect, but i need to know about performance, stability, security (im not talking the adds defender, ie7) im talking about everything, the kernel, the os itself.

we all want security and beauty at the same time, the perfect os. but all need this os because de compability, the plug n play, facility and easy to use, the 80% of pcs use windows,

    watchout

Nostromoo - I don't know about where you live, but where I do I've been told that the trash men are supposed to go thru the trash and seperate recyclables from actually garbage after they're done pikcing up everyone's trash. And by having looked at that photo, I'd imagine the packaging is mostly (recyclable) plastic for the case itself, and the inserts are (recyclable) paper. We may not have any solid proof at this time, but I'd iamgine MS did take the environmental concerns into considerment.
