It came with XP, but I installed Vista on it to "just see". It ran well. I threw Windows 7 on it and it took off like a rocket. So you're almost down to really, budget. What fits your budget? If you like a Netbook that runs like a Ferrari and have the Budget for it, go for it and enjoy the ride. If you're tight on budget, it's ok since most of the major Operating Systems out there will run on it too.

Me personally? I'm just loving Windows 7 on my Acer Aspire One. It's still got space to burn with Office 2007 and Live Writer running on there. It doesn't bog down and I have extra space in my wallet afterwards.

.... And the battery replacements are cheap too :)

I'm enjoying it for its convenience. Its very very convenient to carry around. And whatever normal browsing etc could be done with Normal laptop can be done with this Netbook. It has 12GB SSD , will be expanding it with 16GB SD card. Will install windows 7 afterwards.

One has to actually use it to feel its convenience. Looking forward to netbooks with windows 7 pre installed. That will be the best thing to happen, with prices as low as $200-250$ or even lower for such netbooks.

You'd better make sure it has Windows on it!" piece?

1. Is it easy to use?

- Easy does not equal familiar, especially on a machine with a tiny screen.

- I don't know of any computer or operating system that *doesn't* let you seamlessly transfer files.

- Are there *any* released netbooks that have 3G in them?

- Yeah... I don't know of any netbooks that don't make it easy to connect to a wifi network. That's sort of a throwaway point.

- Windows Instant Search is a feature in... Vista. Are you suggesting using Vista over XP on an underpowered machine?

2. Will it work with my stuff?

Again, most of them do, regardless of operating system (though there have been a few notable exceptions to the fact in Vista with audio tools). My HP scanner and Cannon powershot "just worked" in Ubuntu without any fuss. The truth is, Linux can do most of the things listed there without issue. Sure, you might not be using the name brand Windows tool, but there's a lot of great 3rd party software.

3. Is it the right size?

Why is an article about buying netbooks urging me to buy something larger than a netbook? Could it because Microsoft has less competition in that area?

4. Does it have the hardware horsepower I need?

Isn't a gig of RAM a little overkill for a netbook? Oh, right. Vista.

5. Will I be safe online?

You'll be safer on an operating system that runs the popular state-of-the-art browser Firefox and doesn't need a virus scanner.

6. What level of support do I need?

- Tracking updates down and installing them one by one? What? Aside from operating system updates, that's *exactly* what you end up doing on Windows. There's no function that will let you automatically get security updates for *everything*, including 3rd party applications. (Though guess what? Linux has one!)

- If they sell it to you, you can probably get support from them, regardless of operating system. It's just good business.
