yes but you are talking in absolute terms. of course tests across varying locations are going to differ because of different ISPs and physical distances etc..

i don't believe any tester performing benchmarking tests that this article was meant to disprove is doing so in varying locations. a benchmark will be performed on a single machine at a single point in time, probably over 5 minutes or whatever.

the article mentions things like ISP caching which is fair but in reality an ISP cache is not going to be recreated every 5 minutes.

what i am saying is that it is highly unlikely within 5 minutes on the same machine for these "network conditions" to really affect the outcome of the tests. going back to my point, i monitored my own tracert over 5 minutes with literally a 2ms +/- variance. 2ms is not going to skew anything. the same routers are being used.

therefore if i were to now create a series of URL hit benchmarks to digg.com across all 3 browsers and additionally to measure my base tracert performance at the same time, you would end up with numbers that take network variation into account, or at least prove whether it had anything to do with the outcome.

whilst i believe ie8 is actually very much faster than any ie before it (except initial load time which leads me to believe over-caching is taking place), i take exception to the article trying to make out that all benchmarkers who use the simple method of timing hitting of URLs is false because in reality it won't be under "normal" conditions and what the article actually talks about in my view are "abnormal" conditions.

anyway, looking very much forward to win7 :) by the way, any talk going on about integrating the xbox 360 avatar functionality into win7 for the boot screen? would be so awesome :)

There are so many add-ons that make your internet experience much better, and it is less resouce intensive. I, for one, am not going to rely on a test that Internet Explorer team constructed to make Firefox and Chrome look bad. That is not how you get more users. You don't bash other products. What you do is make your product better. I admit that IE8 is much better than IE7, I still prefer Firefox. I used IE8 and told myself that I would keep an open mind and try it for a full month and make a decision. I used it exclusively for a month and still went back to Firefox. It opens faster and loads pages faster and I can personalize it more. Plus, it uses less RAM and processor spikes are lower in Firefox.
