You can buy any version of Windows Live One Care and use it to renew your subscription because, when you start the new subscription, the newest version automatically downloads from Microsoft. So when you buy version 1 or 2, you are really buying a new product key for another year's subscription.

Today I bought a boxed One Care at Costco. It was $39.99 with a $25 instant rebate. When I got home I started thinking about why the deep discount. Many times the discount applies to "last year's model" just before they go off the shelves.

My current OneCare subscription expires December 3rd. My idea for buying it was to get a good price on another year of OneCare. I plan to hold on to it for the next three months and renew my subscription when the current one runs out.

First, can I do this? I expect I can.

Second, is there going to be a verison 3 that I would be locking myself out of?

OK I know I am in the wrong place, but I don't know where to go to get an answer to a pretty simple question. Why is it that with Vista when I create a shortcut on my desk top to a web site, it is only the IE generic icon that shows up, not the icon associated with that site. For instance Google, I get an IE icon inspead of the Google "G" as my shortcut. Not that I mind that much, but I do have a lot of shortcuts and I hate that they all look alike on Vista.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Speaking of Onecare, the Microsoft Equipt service with OneCare bundled with Office seems like an interesting idea into a new pricing model.

Hopefully Microsoft will have some exciting information from E3 tomorrow.

I would highly suggest to Microsoft to make this service free for Ultimate users...at least provide a complimentary 1 year subscription.

That way Vista Ultimate users won't feel completely/mostly ripped off and will finally get something of reasonable value. Seriously.

I am not a Windows Live One Care user, but if its a nice product, then Microsoft should try to bundle it with its OS. Security is not an option for Users, rather an important aspect for the OS to be stable.

I liked OneCare, until one day I uninstalled it. My computer got so much faster. I'm done with Anti Viruses, we shouldn't need them.

This makes my intentions of using OneCare an even better insentive when my current Security runs out! Especially with the Photo Storage option!
