Sneak Peak at the Acer Aspire 1420P

Today is Day 2 of PDC09, and attendees were given a nice “treat.” During this morning’s keynote, Windows and Windows Live Division President Steven Sinofsky took the stage and announced that all attendees* of this year’s PDC will be given an Acer Aspire 1420P Convertible Tablet PC. This is being done to show our gratitude for the support we received by PDC attendees in the development process of Windows 7. This PC enables developers to leverage many of the unique Windows 7 capabilities including multitouch – which I will talk about further down in this post.

This laptop promotion is the result of a collaborative effort with Acer, whom we worked closely with to have these laptops ready for PDC. This PC is not yet available in the US (Acer has not yet announced pricing and availability for this PC) so that makes this “PDC Edition” of the laptop exclusive to PDC attendees.

The Aspire 1420P PDC Edition comes with the following specs:

The Aspire 1420P comes with 3 USB ports, 1 HDMI port for connecting to HDTVs and monitors, a VGA port, Ethernet port, and a headphone and microphone jack. The laptop features a unique design with a metallic textured design just above the keyboard and a metal hinge for converting the laptop into Tablet mode. Its design is essentially a small laptop with Tablet PC features. It’s slim, light, and has a small footprint – making it easy to carry around. This laptop features a CTRL+ALT+DEL button and a Flip 3D button. Also, the Aspire 1420P uses the Windows 7 Sensor and Location Platform to adjust the screen depending on which way you hold the PC (in Tablet mode). For example: if you’re holding it a landscape position, the screen will display in landscape for you. Vice versa if you hold it in a portrait position.

We worked with Acer to image the laptops with some great software – including the beta release of Office 2010.

Because the Aspire 1420P supports Windows Touch, we’ve included the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7 as well as Corel Paint it! touch.

Corel Paint it! touch allows you to use your fingers to draw and paint. You can also turn your photos into paintings too.

One application I’ve written about recently is Amazon’s Kindle for PC. Amazon has released Kindle for PC and it works great on this laptop. You can download the beta of Kindle for PC today here. You can use multitouch gestures to move from page to page on the Kindle book you are reading. You can also zoom in and out with ease. For more on the Kindle for PC app, check out my demo video here on this post. In Tablet mode, reading books with Kindle for PC is very nice.

The Aspire 1420P also sports Mobile Broadband. With Windows 7, using Mobile Broadband is easier than ever before. Windows 7 will automatically detect if a Mobile Broadband connection is available (after inserting your SIM card).

You can choose to connect to the Mobile Broadband connection where you will be required enter subscription details from your mobile carrier. No need to mess with 3^rd party Mobile Broadband connection utilities.

Not only can you use multitouch with the Aspire 1420P, you can also use it as a Tablet. The Aspire 1420P is perfect for writing down notes using Microsoft OneNote 2010 (my favorite Office app).

Overall, this PC will be great for all the developers attending PDC to experience many of Windows 7’s new features and to be able to develop with those features in mind.

Taking a Closer Look at the Origami Experience 2.0

In the next couple weeks, I'll be doing a 4 part series on the Origami Experience 2.0 which was announced at CES this year. The Origami Experience software is a "pack" of applications designed specifically for the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) running Windows Vista.

The Origami Experience 2.0 software comes with 3 applications that do specific tasks on the UMPC. I'll give a quick overview of these applications in which I'll go into greater detail in my 4 part series of posts about the Origami Experience 2.0.

Origami Central:

Origami Central provides quick access to your Media Library on your UMPC. That means your music, photos and videos. Origami Central lets you play your music, watch your videos and watch photo slideshows. On top of letting you access your media, it also gives you quick access to favorite programs on your UMPC like Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. In the Origami Experience 2.0 - Origami Central comes with a brand new browsing experience. You can now browse the web using Origami Central is full-fidelity web browsing - 100% compatible with IE7. That means you can browse sites that use Flash and other ActiveX controls. It also comes with a RSS feed reader also new to this release.

Origami Now:

Origami Now is a brand new application for the UMPC with the release of Origami Experience 2.0. It is designed to bring you information useful to you very quickly without much interaction. It does this by giving you the ability to customize "tiles". You can navigate between these tiles and their information. What kind of information can be in the tiles? You can configure tiles for weather, email, RSS and more.

Origami Picture Password:
You can use Origami Picture Password to login to your UMPC.

I'm using the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC to run the Origami Experience 2.0 on (exact model number and specs here). It works wonderfully for me.

Testing out the HP Pavilion Entertainment PC tx1000

In January, Windows Vista launched with an impressive slate of Notebook and Tablet PC's. One of those PC was HP's tx1000. The tx1000 is a Pavilion Entertainment PC that is also a Tablet PC with an impressive set of specs:

I was fortunate to be able to spend a few weeks test driving the tx1000 out. You'll note the integrated IR receiver in the above specs - that is because the tx1000 truly is an entertainment PC. The tx1000 comes with a mini Windows Media Center remote that can be docked into the left side of the PC. Whenever you want watch videos in Windows Media Center (or play music), you can pop out the remote and use the remote to navigate through Windows Media Center.

The tx1000 can be configured to come with HP QuickPlay 3.0, which includes a mobile TV module that supports Internet TV streaming. My tx1000 I tested out did not come with this capability unfortunately. What I did was I recorded TV shows on my desktop PC and when I went to travel, I would grab a few of my recorded TV shows and throw them onto the tx1000 to watch while on the road. This worked out real well for me.

Speaking of traveling, one of the coolest features the tx1000 comes with is dual headphone jacks. Instead of having to buy a little adaptor to allow two users to listen through the same headphone jack, the tx1000 does it for you. This makes the tx1000 a very nice laptop to have if you're traveling with someone on a long flight or road trip.

Windows Vista also lets you control the volume level of each individual set of headphones thanks to the new sound abilities Windows Vista ships with.

The tx1000, being a Tablet PC, enjoys many of the Tablet PC features that Windows Vista offers. I was particularly impressed with Windows Vista's ability to read my handwriting and format it to text. It was able to recognize much of my hand writing without any problem.

There are a few more notable features with the tx1000. The tx1000 comes with a fingerprint reader to automate logging on to the PC and also logging on to some of your favorite websites. You also get a 1.3 MP built-in webcam at the top of the screen. The webcam works well with Windows Live Messenger.

The tx1000 has a Windows Experience Index of 3.0 with the strong areas being in the areas of Memory and the Processor.

I ran Windows Vista at 32-bit although the tx1000 supports running at 64-bit.

Overall, I found the combination of being a entertainment PC and a Tablet PC to be a very interesting combination - a combination you really don't see much of today in Notebook PC's. What do you think?
