Safer Online Shopping with Internet Explorer 8

Yesterday was what is known as “Cyber Monday,” which is the first Monday after Black Friday every year and is one of the top online shopping days here in the United States. Cyber Monday is when people move to the Web to make purchases they missed in stores during Black Friday. And many online retailers offer hot deals similar to the in store deals seen on Black Friday. This year’s Cyber Monday was impressive - as of 1pm yesterday, sales for Cyber Monday were up 19.6% over last year according to Coremetrics. A lot of online shopping was done yesterday (I did some too)!

When shopping online, it is important to do so safely and privately. It would not be fun having to deal with stolen credit card details or identity theft instead of celebrating the holidays with your family. Many people don’t even think about their browser while shopping online. But in fact the browser plays a very important role in keeping you safe and secure while making online purchases and browsing the Web.

There are 3 major threats people shopping online should be aware of: Malware, Cross-site Scripting (XSS), and ClickJacking. Internet Explorer 8 protects against each of these threats (via SmartScreen), making it rated #1 for malicious software and phishing protection. To date, Internet Explorer 8 has delivered over 275 Million malware blocks. And as of September, Internet Explorer 8 is blocking 1 in every 200 downloads that appear as malicious. Internet Explorer 8 also helps protect your privacy with InPrivate Browsing.

To help spread awareness about the importance of a browser that puts people in control, especially when it comes to keeping safe while shopping online, we’ve created this fun video:

Gotta Love Cyber Monday and Bing Cashback, I would have spent more...but unemployment has made me very frugal this year.  The deals to be had this week were pretty good, hopefully the deals will keep comming till Christmas.

I still dont trust online transactions that much, oneday maybe the internet will be secure, but it would have to be locked down so no unsigned code could run..that aint happening anytime soon.

Still online shopping, is probably as secure as in store.  Ive heard from the staff at my local brick and mortar Staples store of one person (dodgey Macys staff) who was cloning cards at Macys, they got caught by a supervisor, which is why my Staples now checks everyones card to make sure it aint a clone.. Then there were the criminals in Britain who cloned an entire ATM machine stuck it in a wall and used it to clone cards and steal pins...so yeah theft is everywhere...online or offline.

Eventually you will have to shop online and IE8 has a lot of security features to make that experience safer.

I would trust Firefox except I have too many extentions installed on it, more than in IE, so yeah my comfort level for Firefox aint great.

I guess the bottom line is make sure your running an up to date OS and an up to date browser when shopping online.

Oh and most importantly use a credit card...never use a debit card for online transactions!

I was reading an article yesterday about how hackers are buying advertising space and using their ads to inject malware when the ad is displayed in a persons browser.   The problem is IE seems quite happy to display ads and I don't know how to stop them.  This is the reason I use FireFox which has easy to install plugins which gives me the choice to add functionality that I think is useful.  I use the plugin 'Adblock Plus'  which does a good job of preventing ads from being displayed while at the same time increasing performance of the page load time.    I also use the FireFox plugin called 'No Script' which gives me an easy way to manage which scripts from which website are allowed to run in my browser.    At the moment it's blocking crap from twimg.com and microsofttranslator.com initiated from this web page.  IE simply doesn't offer me this ability or flexibility that FireFox does.
